Killer Deck Reports - May 2001

Soda Pop
by: Muk007 (David Hausknecht)
Broomfield, Colorado
FlatIron Crossing Mall-STS QUALFIER
5/19-20/01
about 100 people in my age category (14 and under)
No entry fee

Sup peoples :) It's been a while since I wrote a deck report, but I just participated in the ECSTS Qualifier and I really wanted to send one in. I faced some good competition and some bad competition. I'm writing about the second day I went, because the day I went before, I made it to the finals with my Drainage deck (see March or April Grass reports) but I
lost to a Steelix deck. There weren't any problems like that today though. Enough of the chit-chat, here's the deck:

*Note: I had never used the this deck before the tournament*
Soda Pop (don't ask where I got the name :)

P-19
2 Cleffa
3 Clefairy (Neo)
3 Clefable
3 Sneasel
3 Murkrow
2 Electabuzz (backup)
2 R. Zapdos (cleaner or whenever)
1 Magby (TecH)

T-25
4 Oak
4 CP Search
3 Itemfinder
2 SER (combo-wish I had got more in)
3 Pluspower (maybe overkill, but I used almost every one EVERY game to
get around the Metal Energy on the defenders)
2 Ecogym
3 Gold Berry
2 GOW
1 NGR (anti-decking)
1 Energy Charge (get back special energy)

E-16
4 Dark
3 Rainbow
3 Recycle
6 Lightning

I wished I had some Metal Energy at the time I made this deck for Rocket's Zapdos :( Oh well. The strategy is probably start with Murkrow and Mean Look. Get a second turn Clefable with a Recycle Energy OR get another energy on Murkrow and start hitting the bench. If ends don't meet, get a second or third turn Sneasel and Beat Up. Use the tricky Recycle Energy/Super Energy Removal combo to leave them stunned. Clean with Rocket's Zapdos.

Report:

Well, after my mom frantically called around to people to see if I could get a ride with no success, someone had left a message on our answering machine saying that their parents were going to Denver to drop off her mom at the airport and the girl needed a ride to church. Broomfield, where the tourney was, is like 45 minutes from Denver (2 hours from where
I live). My mom arranged a deal with them and the dad took me to the tournament. My mom really wanted me to go and win because my BROTHER won the plane tickets for the 10 and under category THE DAY BEFORE! I was really happy.

So, I got there at 8:30 AM and the thing didn't "officially" start until 10:00 so I chilled with a few guys I met the day before and we had a few pick-up games. I ended up beating this one guy's promo Scizor deck (which I saw a lot of those decks throughout the day). I finally got to go eat breakfast at some bagel place. But I also got a VERY sour milk.
Ugh....lol.

We got checked in at 10:00 with our DCI cards and everything. I had to be in area A2 at 10:45 so I had 45 minutes. However, I didn't really want to start any games cause I was so nervous, not a whole lot though. Well, skip 1/2 an hour and the tourney starts :)

TOURNAMENT:

(sorry-I didn't get any names)

Round 1: Soda Pop vs. Newbie
Before we started, I found out that this kid got into the finals the
previous day. I thought that I was up against some great Japanese looking
guy that had some powerful Haymaker deck. I was wrong. Terribly wrong. He
opened with a BS Charmander and a Base Magikarp on the bench. I chuckled
:). I won the roll. I started Murkrow active with I think a Cleffa on
bench. I drew a Neo Clefairy, put it down, attached a Gold Berry to
Murkrow, attached a Dark Energy to Murkrow and Mean Looked. He drew a
card, put a base Clefairy (base!!!) on the bench, attached a fire energy
to Char and Scratched for 10. I drew my card- Recycle Energy. I evolved
Clefairy to Clefable and attached the Recycle Energy to Murkrow and hit
Charmander for 30 w/ Feint Attack. Oh, and I put Ecogym down. He attached
a Fire energy to Char, evolved the Magikrap...I mean...MagiKARP....into
Gyarados, base set, put another Charmander on the bench, and used Ember
for 30 and then I used Gold Berry. I draw Clefable and evole the
Clefairy. I CP Search for an Oak, use it, and get a new hand in which I
got Rocket's Zapdos, Sneasel, Dark Energy, and Recycle Energy and some
other cards. I attached the Recycle Energy to Clefable and KO his active
Charmander. He promotes the base Clefairy, draws a card, anad evolves to
Clefable. He attaches a water energy to Gyarados, evolves the benched
Charmander into a Charmeleon (I can't believe this guy), and passes. I
draw, attach a Dark Energy to Sneasel, and hit his Charmeleon for 20 w/
Feint Attack. He draws, evolves Charmeleon into Charizard, and attaches a
water energy to Gyarados and passes. I draw SER and use it discarding the
Recycle Energy (which went back to my hand) on Gyarados. I hit his
Charizard for 20 more. I'm going to skip a few turns now. I KO his
Charizard w/ Feint Attack and then he knocks out my Murkrow with his
Gyarados, which took him a while to power up from from my continued
SERing with thanks to Itemfinder. I promote Clefable and hit the Gyarados
for 50 with Dragon Rage. He goes, attaches a Defender to Gyarados, and
Dragon Rages for 50 on Clefable. I tried to get Pluspowers to get pass
the Defender but to no avail. I Bubblebeam hoping for heads but it's
tails. Gyarados KOs my Clefable. I knock it out then with Sneasel and win
the game.

Card of the game: Murkrow
1-0

Round 2: Soda Pop vs. Haymaker with base Mewtwo
This guy was pretty good. We exchanged damage and continually used our
Gold Berries. It was a tough match but the game was over for him when I
Mean Looked his MR. MIME!! I massacred his bench and he once managed to
use GOW, but he wasn't smart and brought out Magby. I easily retreated
for free and Mean Looked. I finished the game with Murkrow. If my
opponent is reading this, good game! (*Note* Turns out this guy lives
where I live and we just started going to the same league)

Card of the game: Murkrow (I love this card!)
2-0

Round 3: Soda Pop vs. Piloswine Lock type deck
This deck was OK, but I don't know how it made it to the top 4 of our
group. It just beat my newly-made friend's Dark Raichu deck. He started
Wooper and I had Murkrow once again. I started filling up my bench. He
was so annoying cause he kept on playing with my dice (this kid was like
10 years old or younger) and saying the dice hated me and loves him. I
was about to smack the stupid kid. I ended up winning 6-1 by continually
KOing his pokémon with Sneasel.

Card of the game: Sneasel (hey! it's not Murkrow)
3-0

I ended up being one of the top 2 in my flight with another friend of
mine. We were in the finals We had like 3 hours to do whatever until the
finals started and I had won 24 packs. I only opened 1 and got an
Ampharos (all neo packs). I went with an internet buddy of mine
(Kakkarato7) out to lunch and went back. I still had 2 hours to do
anything. I had a few games in the league and won them all. The judges
announced that we could change our decks before the finals in which I
took out 1 Lass for another Pluspower for my fourth. The new decklist was
the one at the top. Anyways, on to the finals!

FINALS

Ok. Let me tell you what happened. We started our game and I was kicking
this guy's butt and then we have to stop our games because the computer
made a glitch. Oh well :)

Round 4: Soda Pop vs. Pinsir/Clefable deck
This guy was my friend I just made and I really didn't want to play him.
I KOed his Pinsir second turn and his Clefairy (base) turn 3 w/ Beat Up.
We shook hands and he wished me luck in the finals.

Card of the Game: Sneasel
4-0

Round 5: Soda Pop vs. Groovy w/ promo Scizor deck
I saw a lot of these kind of decks today. Well, I started an Electabuzz
and he had a Scyther. I paralyzed first turn then hit for 30 the next
turn. He retreated Scyther and brought out another Scyther and evolved
him into Scizor. He Leered successfully a couple times and KOed my
Electabuzz with the second attack with 2 Metal Energy and a Lightning
Energy. I brought up Sneasel that already had 2 Dark Energy attached and
a full bench, CP Searched for a Pluspower, put it down, Oaked, Computer
Searched for anothe rPluspower, put it down, and Beta Up. With the 2 Dark
Energy and 2 Pluspower I had down, I only needed 2 heads to KO him (I
think he had 10 damage on him already). I flipped.....Tails, Heads,
tails, Heads! YES! Ok, calm down David. Phew...He sent up Scyther with 40
damage on it. He looked at his hand for a long time and attached a DCE
and passed!!!!! I attached a Pluspower I drew and Beat Up (I only needed
one heads). I won!

Card of the Game: Pluspower/Dark Energy
5-0

Final Round 6: Soda Pop vs. Clefable Haymaker
Right when we flipped over our actives (both Electabuzzes), Master
Trainer Steve (I'm not sure if it was THE Steve, he was black, medium
height, African accent) whom I had hilarious talks with said, "I can tell
this is gonna be a good game." I forgot what happened in the beginning
but I had a lot of different actions with my Gold Berries and his Gold
Berries. I think Gold Berry saved me the game. I Smogged and poisoned his
Magmar in the end for the win.

Card of the Game: Gold Berry/Sneasel
6-0

I'M GOING TO NEW JERSEY!!!
