I have been absent quite a bit over the past month.. My mailbox is filling up with decks to fix but I’m back now

So much so that I will now guarantee that each week my garage will update with the following:

  1. One Deck to Fix from emailed entries
  2. Make-A-Deck article with a guide on building a structured deck based on my own advice
  3. Ask PoG where I will ask one rules/game question sent to me by email, so get sending!!
  4. Tips & Tricks where I will advise each week on a specific tactic and go into depth on how to use it wisely

** Congrats on being my 1st deck to review.. About time i got off my bum and did some :)**

Lets begin with your tactic first.. Dark

Your whole deck is centred around the premise that you have Dark monsters and want to "buff" (enhance) them with. This is not such a bad thing but take a look in a shortlist of all the current sets. The majority of the monster cards that hit the hardest are all Dark. This means that whilst there is an easier selection of them to choose and add to your deck it also means that your opponent has the same option.

Out of all the RACE decks, Dark cards are the most common and because of that when using them you are most likely going to be encountering dark cards yourself. In Magic Ruler there are new race cards that act like FIELD MAGIC ones, like Yami but apply to the RACE rather than the CLASS. This will mean a lot more people will start playing race decks and which do you think they will pick?

Dark.. right..

Which means your witches apprentice or dark field magic options are defunct as their cards get the same bonus.

Anyways, onto the cards…

1 Dark Magician

*Nice, you follow my rule of only 1 or at a push 2 7-8 level cards in a deck, and a good choice too

1 Judge Man

*Looking further down I see you have 2 summoned skulls. & 2 curse of dragons. You have 5 monsters that require a tribute to enter the field. Not factoring in “Summon Stoppers” like Trap Hole or Horn of Heaven, this means to play these cards you will need to tribute 10 cards! That’s half of your monsters..

My advice is, if your keeping to a 40 deck, keep your 5-6 level cards at 2 or 3 at most. Any more is going to load your hand with useless cards that you cant get onto the field

1 La Jinn The Mystical Genie of the Lamp

*I know you got this card from a Starter but it is a VERY good card, I suggest you either trade for 2 more or invest in some MRD boosters for 7 Coloured Fish. Your deck should contain around 6 1800atk monsters.

1 Battle Ox

* Throw it away, its easily beatable, isn’t a dark monster so you can’t “buff” it and is wasting deck space

1 Hane-Hane

* Nice effect but unless you plan on making your own cards go back to your hand or are combating an exodia deck THIS card is a powered-down version of a man-eating bug. I see you have 3 MEB’s anyways but the hane is not needed for your deck, remove it.

1 Man-Eating Treasure Chest

* Again, a nice card from the starter deck but easily beatable against full-powered decks, invest in getting some 1800 monsters like La Jinn or 7 fishes

2 7 Colored Fish

* Nice, get more!

2 Neo the Magic Swordsman

* This card is an anti-dark card. If you ever wanted to add some dark “buff” field cards to your deck this card would become very weak. The idea of having dark magic cards is so that you can enhance the card you have on the field. If this card isn’t dark then it was a wasted draw and could cost you the game

2 Summoned Skull

2 Curse Of Dragon

* Like I said before, chop it down to 2-3 of these type of cards in total

2 Wall of illusion

* Very good, one of the most UNDER-RATED cards in the game. This card can only be beaten by Dark Elf, Jirai Gumo or a Level 5+ monster.. Which leaves you a lot of safety and stall time to draw out your good cards

3 Man Eater Bug

* Good, nice card and 3 of them is a must

3 Ryu-Kishin Powered

* Again, Nice when all you have is starters but since 7 fishes is a common in the new Metal Ruler set you can easily replace it

Unlike other deck mechs I don’t give you a new deck to use. I give you advice and guidelines to follow.

You should never have more than 3 of any card (magic also) unless it is vital to your tactic. Trap Hole is always vital, man eater bug is always vital as is magician of faith but card which aren’t are Summoned Skull, Hane Hane, Big Eye …

If playing a certain card or combination is vital to your tactic you can use 3 cards, but in the case of High Level cards this can be counter productive.

If not, then you should never have more than 2 cards of one type. Using this method allows you to free your deck up for more different types of combinations and effect monsters.

Time for the Magic / Trap cards now…

1 Monster Reborn

1 Dark Hole

* Good, I see you have Change of Heart as well but your missing all the others. Rageki, Swords of Revealing light.. etc. In my opinion you should have EVERY restricted card you can get in your deck.. No excuses. Each one is restricted because it is powerful and that power is what you need in this or any other deck

1 Soul Exchange

* Useful but with only one you won’t be pulling out those monsters in your deck.

1 Change of Heart

1 Card Destruction

* Good, Card Destruction is very useful.. If used right. Don’t waste it on your 1st turn because you have lots of poor cards. It is a clutch card that you need to use when you need it

2 Sword of Dark Destruction

* Get another one if you can. 3 cards?? I’m mad right? No.. this is a Dark deck and you need to buff your dark cards. Personally, I don’t use Buff cards especially with the advent of the new set they will all be very useless as more and more people use Reverse Trap. You do and if you do, go full ahead and work it in as a main combo component

3 Fissure

* Yes, good

Traps

2 Reinforcements

* Mmmm, not seen this one used in a long time.. This is a classic defence card and can turn a duel to your favour. I would add another one!

3 Waboku

* Yes, good

3 Trap Hole

* Yes, good

Summary

1.)    You have to reduce your deck ratio. You should have 1 monster for every 1 monster/trap card. Any deviation from this usually results in pulling a mon when you need a magic or vice versa.

2.)    You should improve the complement of attack monsters. As advised, if you can get La Jinn, do.. It gets benefit from the Swords Of Dark Destruction but if not then invest in a few 7 Coloured Fish. I think you should have 6x 1800 atk monsters

3.)    Reduce your High Level monsters so that you have 1-2 (6-7’s) & 2-3 (5-6’s)

4.)    Get some better effect cards like Magician Of Faith, Mask of Darkness, Big Eye or, very good for you, Witches Apprentice!!

5.)    Get some more restricted cards (especially sangan and witch of the black forest) and add them

6.)    Add some defensive cards, 2000def is good… Once you notice that you don’t need them as much take them out little by little.. like stabilisers on a kids bike they can help you keep a good compliment of defence monsters in your deck without turning it into a stall deck

7.)    Read my Deck Construction guide posted in my Garage which will include cards to miss and cards to get

8.)    Have Fun
