Crystal Beast Emerald Tortoise

Sorry about the lack of reviews from me in the past couple weeks -- between Regionals, my recent lottery win, and a trade involving 42,000 commons and 5,000 rares (thanks Bill!), things have been a bit hectic on my end.

Emerald Tortoise is the only thing the Crystal Beasts have right now that can be considered a decent defense; Spy seems to hold well at 2,000 ATK and fends off anything short of Cyber Dragon and tributes in today's metagame, so it can hold out for a turn or two here.

It can also help block some damage by shifting something like Ruby Carbuncle to defense, which can be nice after you had to Special Summon it somehow. Otherwise, it's just good support. Won't be doing much attacking, but it doesn't need to.

Crystal Beast--Emerald Tortoise continues Crystal Beast week, and this may be one Crystal Beast that might actually work outside of the Crystal Beast Deck, but we will look at that in a moment.

Our Tortoise friend here is of no surprise a Water monster of the Aqua type. It is a Level 3 monster with 600 attack and 2000 defense. It has the ability of switching any monster on your Field that you attacked with during the turn into defense mode.

A cowering and hiding effect may not seem like much, but it could be more important than you think. Suppose you used something that was strong enough to destroy an opponent's monster but it isn't strong enough to destroy something else. However, its defense could stand up to that monster.

Don't get me wrong, it isn't game breaking by any means, and it could be useful once in a while. As the others Crystal Beasts can, you can send this to an open Magic or Trap slot, instead of to the Graveyard when destroyed.

Ratings:

Traditional Crystal Beast: 1/5

Traditional: 1.5/5 It could be useful...maybe, maybe not.

Advanced Crystal Beast: 2.25/5 Not the best

Advanced: 2/5 Again, could be useful, even outside the Crystal Beast Deck.

You stay classy, Planet Earth :)

3/5 in his deck.

I still have yet to see anyone use this in their crystal beast deck due to it just sitting back and looking pretty. 2000 def. today does not cut it with triple monarch this and three cyber dragon that falling all over the place. Significantly more playable than some of the monsters, but not really worth the deck space due to ridiculously low attack stats.

So today we look at Emerald Turtle. Another Crystal Beast that accomplishes nothing. Essentially you’ll end up attacking with it, then switching it to defense using it’s own effect. With abysmal ATK you won’t be killing anything to gain any sort of advantage.

Really I can’t see much else to say about this one, it really sucks.

Crystal Beast Emerald Tortoise

[Aqua/Effect]
Once per turn, you can change 1 of your monsters that attacked this turn to Defense Position. If this card is destroyed while it is in a Monster Card Zone, you can place it face-up in your Spell & Trap Card Zone as a Continuous Spell Card, instead of sending it to the Graveyard.
600/2000

Here is one of the potentially better cards we have seen here in Crystal Beast week. So Emerald Tortoise can help protect your lifepoints after attacking. This card not only can help the Crystal Beast Amethyst Cat, but all of the Crystal Beast monsters in general. This is one of the few splashable Crystal Beasts there are as it doesn't depend on Crystal Beasts to make it be effective. It's hard to really find a good monster to put into defense mode after attacking, but those floater spies now can be safe the next turn with this card. Other than saving life, the 2000 def is really nice to see, sure it's at Cyber Dragon and other over 2000 monsters mercy, but it can stonewall pretty much any other monster. This can also be beneficial against Gadgets. Sure it's not as good as Gravekeeper's Spy, but with the right cards around this, it can be. With the ever so popular Card Trooper, swing for 1900 and then keep yourself from losing a lot of lifepoints and draw the card when Card Trooper goes away, can be very useful indeed.

Traditional: 1/5 Not light or dark, it's hard to really use this there, Spy is a better bet in traditional.
Advanced: 4/5 One of the higher rated Crystal Beasts, it's ability to be splashable and a useful effect with many monsters of the format, make this card a lot better than people think.

Crystal Beast Emerald Tortoise

Well we all knew that with a new theme these days, there has to be a monster that can only defend. I can make this review short and sweet. This card is bad. The entire reason why Crystal Beasts are so good in the first place is because they’re FAST. Defense is inherently SLOW. This card’s only purpose in a Crystal Beast deck is to sit there and get killed by Cyber Dragons, Monarchs, Jinzo, or Dark Magician of Chaos. It’s effect is ACTUALLY semi-useful in very rare cases, but the space this card takes up and the fact that it’s going to do NOTHING in an offensive push is just too much to ignore. The only way this’d be useful is if he had 1500 ATK at least instead of 600.

Crystal Beast - Emerald Tortoise

Emerald Tortoise is definitely one of the better, and most rounded of the crystal beasts.  It weighs in at 600 attack and 2000 defense, and has a very useful effect that allows you to switch a crystal beast to defense after it attacks.  This could be useful for when you attack with an amethyst cat, because you can poke for 600 and then switch it to defense to keep you safe from taking damage.  Or you could just poke for 600 with the turtle if you were to ever get the chance and switch it to defense to save yourself from taking life points.

Also with its high defense, it can stall you out for a couple turns if your in need of drawing some of the power cards for the crystal beast theme.  The only cards in a normal monarch build that can get around this are cyber dragons and monarchs, while the latter can be  avoided with a simple pulling the rug.

Overall, this card should be ran in 2's or 3's in a gem beast themed deck because it has a lot of utility compared to many of the others.  If i were to run gem beasts, i would for sure be running a minimum of 2 of these, and prolly 3.
