Thestalos the Firestorm Monarch

Now we see another reprint of an already-common starter deck card....and it's still not as good as when it came out.

Don't get me wrong -- 2400 ATK and a discard from the opponent to compensate for you having to tribute is still good. But people are still playing that random Goldd, and Zaborg still > this for so many reasons (which we'll get to tomorrow.) even without that random Goldd being a threat.

I could see one copy in (....ich, it pains me just to say its name) Soul Control but not much else.

1/5 Traditional
2.75/5 Advanced

Coin Flip
It's Thestalos. If you want to go Soul Control, it's not even the second best to go for. I'd still play it, but I'd play tomorrow's card before I did that. 2400 is nice and all, but Sakuretsu and Bottomless can both prevent it from getting through, meaning that this is not the card to shake up the stagnant metagame. Still fun. I'd say it's a shame the Monarchs couldn't be less friendly to Tsukuyomi, but I like Tsukuyomi more anyway.

Looks cool, though. Gotta make you wonder... Are the Monarchs about the same size as an average human being is in YGO!? I mean, they look big, but so does Skull Servant from the right perspective. It's all in how the cards are drawn.

I don't really care, but it does make me a little curious.

Soul Control:
2.8/5 Traditional
3.7/5 Advanced (Mobius and Zaborg both score higher, though)

Dark Paladin
Well, hello everyone. After nearly two weeks, I'm back to reviewing some cards. Check out my article today to see what I've been up to.
Anyway, today we review a monarch, Thesatlos.

Thestalos is Level 6 and has the same 2400 attack and 1000 defense you'll find on all the Monarchs. When you tribute summon him successfully, he becomes a one for one, and a fairly decent one. You give up one monster as a tribute, and your opponent takes 100 damage x the level of the monster discarded, IF it's a monster.

Regardless of what you take, your opponent is down a card, so that's good, since the burn effect is negligible anyway. Though, you probably are only playing Thestalos for one of two reasons. Either you need some beatdown in your Burn deck, or you're running Monarch control involving the rest of the Family.

Ratings:

Traditional: 2.75/5
Traditional Monarch Control: 3.25/5

Advanced: 3.5/5
Advanced Monarch Control: 4.25/5

Art: 4/5

You stay classy, Planet Earth :)

Thestalos review:

So today we are looking at a solid card. Thestalos is naturally best suited in Yomi-Emperor decks, or as most TCG players know them: Soul Control. Although I personally feel that Zaborg is a much better choice Thestalos can be used to effect as well. Recently his play in SC has decreased for fear of random Dark World techs. Now while they hurt the probability is still low.

Overall if you plan to build one of those decks I'd suggest maining Moby and Borg. If you have room you can run Thestalos but I just don't like his effect as much as the others.

Advanced: 3.1/5

Ryoga
Thestalos the Firestorm Monarch:
If you didn't get it in Super Rare, if you didn't get it in the Fire deck, then, come forth young one, and get it in this super special Rare format!

Most of you should know the effects of the Monarchs.
This one is technically the burn one, but with an average burn damage of 400 when it hits a monster doesn't tempt many.

What is tempting is the hand destruction, which has always been a powerful effect in this game. You trade one tribute monster (*ribbet*) for one card in your opponent's hand. Fair as far as I'm concerned.

Traditional: 3.5/5
Advanced: 4/5

Share and enjoy,
Ryoga

Thestalos the firestorm monarch :

As Monarchs go, this is third, or possibly second after a joint first. Either way, you get where I’m going with this.

Thestalos doesn’t really deliver. His ‘in-summon’ effect of a Don Zaloog when summoned isn’t bad, but it’s nothing outstanding either. A card out the hand is something to enrage the foe, but it will rarely render them useless. After that he’s a fairly useless 2400 attack fire monster.

Fire’s not a theme that dominates this format, so it’s not going to be found in most common decks. Still, in a fire deck, I’d more than consider it.

This guy really fell out of favour after the advent of Dark World, and since there’s been an advent in Chaos, it’ll b a while before he’s back.

Traditional : 2/5
Advanced ; 3/5

MikeJ Thestalos the Firestorm Monarch

Level 7/Fire

2400 ATK/1000 DEF
Pyro/Effect: When this card is Tribute Summoned successfully, randomly discard 1 card from your opponent's hand to the Graveyard. If the discarded card was a Monster Card, inflict damage to your opponent's Life Points equal to the Level of the monster x 100 points.
Now we get to some more decent playable cards but none better then the Monarchs but today we look at the fire monarch which is out shined much like Gramarg by its other brothers Mobius & Zaborg. For the same stats as the other Monarchs you get a Confiscation without the peak at your opponent's hand plus added burn which is futile but still good. Like all Monarch they go great with Brain Control, Soul Exchange, Snatch Steal or the much popular method of Treeborn Frog for continous tribute fodder plus like Mobius & Zaborg he still dies from Tsukuyomi > . < of course most things die from that spirit. Still used in Soul Control but lately its seen less play with people running 1 or more tech copies of Goldd in there deck or people rather have its Light counterpart Zaborg for field control rather then hand control.
Traditional Format > 1.2/5: Rather pointless you have Cinfiscation , Delinquent Duo, The Forcefull Sentry is good enough for Hand Control there or blow up there hand with the Dragon >. >
Advance Format > 4.1/5: All the Monarch do better in Advance Format then Trad but beware of random Goldd techs if you want to use the Fire Monarch
Artwork 2/5 > I hate the artwork of this one the most the others look cooler

Pippin *sigh*

Why does Konami insist on rereleasing common structure deck fodder as a slot in a highly anticipated card set?

Thestalos is, in my opinion, the most useless monarch in the game, but before you start hurling flaming fire balls at me let me explain. Being a monarch automatically makes him better than most, but most people side-boarding Goldds and Silvas causes a problem for the great Ares wanna-be. The burn is ok, but not too heavy with most decks not seeing star levels go higher than 6. The discard can help your opponent with Chaos and be detrimental to a game against Dark World.

I won't comment on the atk and def since they are the same as every other monarch. Its attribute is fire, which has very little assistance (maybe Big Burn, Gaia Soul the Combustible Collective, Ultimate Baseball Kid) but these require him to be tributed or killed. Why would you want to do that? He's 2400 atk. His effect is the least of the other monarchs because what you destroy has a certain aspect of luck. The other monarchs have specific targets so you at least know what type of card you are destroying.

Granmarg lets you destroy a FD card, which can be game ending PLUS is an Earth which helps Earth decks that are seeing more support and play lately. Zaborg kills a monster, which can be game ending PLUS he is a light which... duh. And Mobius destroys 2 S/T on the field, which is almost always game deciding or at least swinging (we will forget the fact he is water type).

Bottom Line:
Traditional: 2/5 for being a monarch, but CED rules the burning roost here.
Advanced: 3/5 for being a monarch and a fire deck's friend.

Art: 3/5 Not my favorite monarch art. He looks a little disproportioned, but his armor is cool and he is holding a friggin fire ball.

Until Next Time, Burn baby burn... Disco Inferno!!
