ExMinion OfDarkness
Mystic Box

This card won't fit into the standard cookie-cutter, but there are so many ways to break this thing.

You kill an opponent's monster and give them one of yours. Usually that's a -1 (your Mystic Box + your monster going to them against their monster.) This card belongs in a couple specific decks:

Decks running a lot of elemental searchers. (It's not a -1 anymore if you give them a Tomato or Giant Rat, kill it, and then you get the search. But then again, there IS Creature Swap for that.)
WATER DECKS. Not only do they have Mother Grizzly, but as mentioned in McHale's article, giving them a Poison Draw Frog can end up dealing a lot of damage and giving you a draw.

For regular monster destruction, we already have 3 Smashing Ground and people playing up to 6 "when your opponent's monster attacks, kill something" traps. It's a combo card, and will be as good as the combos it's involved with.

1.5/5 Traditional
2.75/5 Advanced

Coin Flip
This card is good for one reason and one reason alone; Ameba. To a lesser extent, Giant Kozaky, but pretty much, these two cards are the only reasons for this card to exist. Better removal exists… And… Well, the card is just not good.

Ameba/Giant Kozaky swapping: 4.4/5
Everywhere else: 1.3/5

Dark Paladin
Today we look at Mystic Box, a card that needs to be used very carefully. Mystic Box is sort of like Creature Swap, except where Creature Swap switches a monster from you to the opponent and vice-versa, Mystic Box destroys an opponents and gives them one of yours.

Think about it though...even though you could destroy Jinzo, Mobius, Phoenix (but why?), or Cyber Dragon, you only would want to use this when you have a weak monster out. You don't want to give your opponent anything good.

Furthermore, think about this. This is a 2 for 1 and it favors your opponent as it's only a 1 for 1 for them. You give up Mystic Box AND a monster. They lose a monster, but get one in return from you.

Ratings:

2/5 all around...Just stick with Creature Swap

Art: 2/5

You stay classy, Planet Earth :)

Stats                : Mystic Box is a Normal Spell.  It’d probably be better off as a Quick-Play, just to give it some diversity.  Or, with a significantly different effect that better represents the manga/animé effect, as a Trap.

Effect(s)            : Mystic Box is something of a strange effect: you get to destroy an opponent’s Monster… but then they get one of yours.  At least you choose in both situations.

Uses and

Combinations  : This is most definitely a niche card: giving your opponent a Monster can be useful, but not for the majority of decks.  Such decks usually involve Ameba or Giant Kozaky, with the goal of major burn damage.  There are also a few decks that might like it since they want to give your opponent something that proves quite useful.  For example, I think it’s perfectly sensible to give an opponent a Sasuke Samurai #3 and then run something small into it so you can draw up to seven cards.  Note, I am not saying to use it that way, just that it could.  And of course, in general, you can always give something like a spent Magician of Faith that you can easily destroy in battle.

Ratings (due to the nature of this card, these are ratings according to decks that use it)

Traditional       : 1/5 – Too complex a strategy for this format.

Advanced        : 3.5/5 – I’ve seen a swap based burner, and thanks to this card, it is very, very annoying: if you have any good Monster, it tends to get destroyed by this or Swapped.

Limited            : N/A – It would be a good card for Limited, just because it is Limited, and poor Monster removal is better than none.

Summary

As a card, it isn’t too bad since it is meant for some very specific decks to use.

Mystic Box review

Ah Mystic Box, I remember first using this card in YGO World Wide Edition (remember that game? I mostly bought it for the Harpie’s Feather Duster and Sinister Serpent, but then again most people did…) Well this card is akin to Creature Swap IMO. End result you get a monster on your opponent’s side of the field that you want there, while the opponent loses a monster. Now the upside is that you get to target which opponent’s monster, the downside is that it dies and you don’t get a potentially deadly monster.

Overall this card has the same uses and drawbacks that Creature Swap has. And currently Creature Swap is seeing limited play; this card has no room in the current game.

Traditional: 1.2/5
Advanced: 2.6/5 (just use Creature Swap)
