ExMinion OfDarkness Thursday:
Rare Metal Dragon

Great stats, horrible effect. 2400/1200 would be a great card for a 4-star monster -- ahh, who am I kidding, it'd be played in threes. The problem is there are so few ways to get around the effect, and the ones we DO have are better used with other cards.

Monster Reborn/Premature/Call -- usually you want a searcher, Jinzo, a Chaos monster, or something that costs the opponent a card in hand coming back from these.

Flute of Summoning Dragon -- wouldn't we be calling Blue Eyes with this thing?

Your opponent would pretty much automatically give you this with Painful Choice unless you took the Snake...the weird thing is, I see the most support for this in a Warriror deck -- one utilizing Marauding Captain and Familiar Knight. The hard thing to deal with is the lack of hand advantage created by using either.

I'm going to go ahead and say that would actually be a half-decent strategy post-banlist.

2.75/5
Tranorix Rare Metal Dragon

With an ATK of 2400, Rare Metal Dragon is the strongest Level 4 monster in the game, matched only by Armor Exe, which is not nearly as playable. The DEF of 1200 makes him searchable by Witch, and being a Dragon gives him some advantages, such as being protected by Lord of D and able to be Special Summoned by Flute.

The effect is a fairly big drawback, however. You can't Normal Summon or Set Rare Metal Dragon, meaning the only way you're going to get him on the field is through Special Summoning such as Monster Reborn, Call of the Haunted, or Premature Burial. The problem is simple: Why use those cards on a mere 2400 monster with no positive effect when you can use them on bigger, better things like End of Anubis or Jinzo?

The solution is also simple: Use cards that work to Rare Metal Dragon's advantage. The two that immediately come to mind are Cyber Jar (which CAN'T summon those higher-level monsters but CAN summon RMD) and Familiar Knight (yesterday's card). Those are the two with which Rare Metal Dragon will be combined most often, though you may see some people use Flute of Summoning Dragon (though I wouldn't recommend that, for the same reason I wouldn't recommend using Reborn). Rare Metal Dragon is a good card, but he needs to be put in a deck that can support him.

Typical tournament deck: 2/5
Beatdown w/ Familiar Knight: 4/5
OVERALL RATING: 3/5
Otaku

Stats: rare Metal Dragon is a Level 4 card-which, were it not for its effect, would allow it to be summoned without any special tricks.  Oh well.  It is Dark, a definite bonus, and a Dragon, another great type.  Then we get tow hat makes it special.  2400 ATK, the highest a Level 4 can get, and only held by one other-Armor Exe, which can’t attack the turn it comes into play.  This is of course great.  Next is a Sangan legal 1200 DEF, which could be 1500 and still work, but 1200 is better than zero.

Effect(s): This card can’t be normal Summoned or set.  Ouch.  That basically makes it a tribute monster that can’t be tribute summoned (I know it’s not a tribute, but like a tribute, you’d have to dump and revive it).

Uses/Combinations: It’s saving grace.  It works with Lord of D/Flute of Summing Dragon as well yesterday’s card, Familiar knight.  Less controllable but also legal, I believe, are Cyber Jar and Morphing Jar #2.

Ratings

Casual: 3/5-Niche card, but could be good.

Tournament: 2/5-A lot of effort for a small advantage.  Still, it will be an advantage.

Summary

This is how to do these stat-guideline breaking cards, though maybe not quite so harsh.

JAELOVE

Thursday: Rare Metal Dragon

Rated For: Dragon Decks, Familiar Knight Decks

Armor Exe:  No, dude, I'm the studliest level four. I was introduced in Magician's Force, way before you! And I'm much cooler and my artwork owns yours. Plus, you're a nasty dark type! Who likes evil dark types?

Rare Metal Dragon:  Sorry buddy. You better move over, there's a new stud level four in town, and his name is R-M-D.

Armor Exe:  You're a filthy liar! I am the king…. What's that? No counters? I'm disappearing? Nooooooooooooooooo…….

All hail the new level four champion, Rare Metal Dragon. Boasting a meaty 2400 attack, dark type powers, and a searchable 1200 defense? Plus he's a dragon type? Awesome! Or is it?

Advantage F/H: Once he's on the field, he's nearly unstoppable. Of course, getting him there is the hard part! Needless to say, many cards in the present and future will help you achieve the goal of bringing him out, but much of the time he'll be dead weight. When he's on the field he's perfect for the resource cost, but he's on the field less than half the time. He can help field advantage, but hurts hand advantage equally. 5/10

Best Draw for the Situation: He's rarely a card you want to draw into in any situation. He's more of a combo card, working with graveyard recursion and monster effects such as Marauding Captain and Wednesday's Familiar Knight. Really a liability in any phase of play, though.       2/10.

Attributes/Effect: We'll start at zero for such a horrible effect. Add a few points for strong attack, add a point for being searchable by Witch, add a point for being special-summonable by Lord of D., add another point for being a level 4, and add a point for being a dark-type. This gives him a                             6/10.

Dependability: Eventually, cards will be introduced that'll make summoning this card a snap. As of now, your only reliable combos are Painful Choice/Graceful Charity/Card Destruction (All restricted) + recursion (All restricted), Marauding Captain/Familiar Knight, or Flute of Summoning D. Hardly spectacular, and not worth the trouble. 3/10.

The Bottom Line: Wait for the Malik cards that should help this card (check out DM7FGD's article entitled "Malik's Monstrosities".) Until then, don't bother.

A BAD Score: 16/40=                              40/100

Cards it combos with: Familiar Knight, Witch of the Black Forest, Marauding Captain, Lord of D., Flute of Summoning Dragon, Card Destruction, Painful Choice
