Pojo's Yu-Gi-Oh Card of the Day

Shinato, King of a Higher Plane

Card Number - DCR-016

Ratings are based on a 1 to 5 scale
1 being the worst.  3 ... average.
5 is the highest rating

Date Reviewed - 12.16.03

wartortle32 Shinato, King of a Higher Plane

This card can only be Ritual Summoned with the Ritual Spell Card, "Shinato's Ark". You must also offer monsters whose Level Stars equal to 8 or more as a Tribute from the field or your hand. When a Defense Position monster on your opponent's side of the field is destroyed and sent to the graveyard by this card as a result of battle, inflict damage to your opponent's life points equal to the original ATK of the destroyed monster.

While this monster may seem to be extremely powerful, if you take a closer look, you'll see that is average at best. The attack is among the highest of any card in English right now, but attack alone will get you nowhere today. Monsters also usually have to have a decent effect to be playable, certainly if they have such a high cost such as this monster. So let's look at the effect of this monster. It does damage to the opponent equal to the attack power of a monster that is destroys in battle if that monster was in defense. Usually, the only monsters that are played in defense are flip effect monsters with really weak effects. So basically, if this effect occurs, you're using a 3300 beatstick to do maybe around 500 damage. That certainly is not what you want to be doing with a monster that you tried so hard to summon. You want to be able to attack directly or take down powerful monsters like Jinzo.

Now let's look at the cost. With a requirement of sacrificing 8 stars, you're looking at sacrificing 2-3 monster to summon this, definitely more than it's worth. All this monster does is slow you down. And even if you do summon it, it will probably be destroyed in 1-2 turns with magic or monster effects. That's why monsters that are hard to summon (ritual or fusions) are played so little today. It's not worth the extra effort to summon a strong monster if it's just going to be destroyed in a few turns anyway.

I'd give this a 2.7/5. The attack is enough to give it a decent rating. If you really want to use a ritual monster, you could probably build the best deck around this monster. Personally, I think ritual monsters aren't worth the time unless you're using a causal deck.

Ehhh... It's a Ritual Monster. Besides the overpowering Monster that you receive, Ritual Summons tend to be very costly. Do you really want to mutilate your Hand/Field in order to Special Summon a 3300/3000 Monster with a "Trample-ish" Effect?

If it's a casual deck, then sure. Go for it. A tournament deck on the other hand, will not be able to deal with the massive loss of cards. Less cards equals less protection. Your opponent could simply drop a Dark Hole/Raigeki/Torrential Tribute/ECT and you would be quite screwed.

In short, if you're a fan of card for some reason or another, enjoy it in casual matches. If you're a tournament player, keep it in your trade binder.

Very, very, very difficult to use in Limited. You'll have to pray for some good pulls and/or passes.

You have to admit, that Effect is pretty damn nice.

Here's another really fun card (aren't all giant monsters with killer effects fun?). Your opponent will be forced to either leave his/her monsters in Attack Position or possibly suffer horrible losses with it in Defense Position. The effect basically guarantees that you will do LP damage to your opponent. The bigger the monster defending, the better, for you that is.

Unfortunately, the biggest thing this card has going against it is that it is a Ritual Monster and it does require 8 stars worth of monsters to Tribute for it. Even with the effect, it can't get past Spirit Reaper and low ATK Defense Position monsters will minimize the impact.

I would be curious to see what the ruling will be with Cost Down in relation to Ritual Monsters.

This would be hard to win a tournament with but it'd be fun to try.

First look at this and I’m still in shock. I love this card, but it won’t get much play since it’s a ritual. That means I’ll have to offer many monsters for it to come out, but it’s worth it if it does come out. It’s powerful, so you know it’ll kill something, actually most things since very little creatures have enough DEF points to stop it. Book of Moon makes this guy that much better. Flip a beefy monster face-down, then kill it with Shinato for big damage. This guy kinda looks like the opposite of DM7's favorite card, Dark Master Zorc the downside is that he can be useless if you if.
I give Shinato, King of a Higher Plane a 7.9/10(I can’t let personal preference get in the way of giving a fair rating)
Experiment JON Shinato, King of a Higher Plane

Wow… it’s a 3300 solid attack monster with trample. That’s what I call power! Imagine, you control God…you ride on his back and smash through your opponent’s defenses, leaving them weak and helpless…and you win the duel!

In your dreams! This card is terrible. First the card is a ritual monster. That means you need at least two cards. Then you have to sacrifice eight levels worth of monster. That’s another two cards. Say you have five cards in your hand, none on the field. You will have to use four cards from you hand just to summon this card (ritual, this monster, and two level four monsters)! That leaves your hand with only one card.

Sure, this monster is good if you can summon it, but for all that work just to be wiped away by one fissure is too much for me to bear. My basic advice to you is to stay away from ritual monsters no matter how good they appear, because for it to cost you so many cards to summon, and be destroyed by one fissure will defiantly not be worth it.

If this wasn't a ritual monster it would be worth it to build a deck around this card, but rituals havent always been the best, and in te current meta, it is pretty unlikely you will be able to summon Shinato, lets take a look at the effect, most of the time, if your opponent is setting a monster, it probably just a searcher or fiber jar, so the most damage you'll inflict with this card is probably 1100 or so, you can raise it up quite a bit with big bang shot or FMC, but equips have never been good,of course you can combo with book of moon too, but it would be difficult to pull it off with all the disruption and lp demolition in the current meta. This card takes at least 3 cards to summon, and you still risk torrential, mirror force, etc. If you feel the need to play it, keep it casual.

Tourney-2.1/5

Draft - 1/5

Artwork - 3.5/5 (looks almighty.. which if you get him out, he is)

Closing Line - Attack face down!! a fiber jar.. AFTER SPENDING THE WHOLE DUEL SUMMONING THIS THING...YOU STILL TAKE 500!!! HAH!
dawnyoshi Shinato is by far one of the most devastating ritual monsters to be released in Japan AND America. A 3300 trampler is very destructive. Though rituals can be a wear on the hand, there's ways to get around this. Running some high level monsters such as Blue Eyes White Dragon can be of assistance since you can always revive it to the field once again. Not hard at all. Senju, Sonic Bird, and soon to be Manju God (from the next set) will help you summon this monster.

Don't be fooled by its ritual exterior. Try this card if you pull it from a pack. It's quite good once it hits the field.

Constructed: 4/5- Destructive power for a ritual monster. Combine it with some hand destruction to leave your opponent with little options.

Limited: 2/5- I don't know how rare the ritual is. If you find it, draft it, but only if you pull the ritual. Odds are nobody will pick it unless they get the ritual anyway.
