Pojo's Yu-Gi-Oh Card of the Day

Metamorphosis

Card Number - PGD-090

Ratings are based on a 1 to 5 scale
1 being the worst.  3 ... average.
5 is the highest rating

Date Reviewed - 08.08.03

DuelMonster Friday:
Metamorphosis
PGD-090 -Common
Normal Magic:
Offer 1 monster on your side of the field as a Tribute to Special Summon 1 Fusion Monster of the same Level in face-up Attack or Defense Position from your Fusion Deck. Monsters used for a Tribute Summon or that are offered as Tribute due to other card’s effects are excluded.

I have to make this review short, on my way out for a long night... This it almost a Summoner Of Illusions in Magic form. You can only use this card in a single chain, and you can only Tribute one monster, so unless you have a 6-9 level monsters out your only really going to get a Thousand Eyes Restrict out easy, and you can do it in your first turn.

Two cards that quickly stop Metamorphosis, Jowgen and Mask Of Restrict, can't special summon and can't tribute a monster. I know this card will be used for mostly quick summons in a Fusion or TER Deck, but it can also be used in a Beatdown as some added monster-power. I know once the really good Fusion monsters start coming out I may even take this card out for a spin, but at the moment I play an anti-tribute/anti-special summon/anti-deck Deck so it won't fit anywhere in there.

Ratings:
Casual: 3.5
Tourney: 2.5
ArtWork: 2.0 - Kind of freaky looking at first, then I thought it looked
really lame and stupid. Can't really tell what form is changing into what,
but it looks painful.

Finally, thank god its Friday…wait dang that means the end of summer vacation is even closer…dangit. I mentioned this card yesterday as a way to get out Reaper on the Nightmare. Anyway this card is nice to get out some of those fusions you want, and can’t seem to get fusion gate or polymerization. Problem is you can only offer 1 monster, which means you most likely have to tribute. Tributing is slow…giving the opponent opportunity to beat you in the mean time. Most ways of summoning high level are too slow. The best way I can think of is flute of summoning dragon. The problem is most fusions are higher up 5+ in level or low like Thousand Eyes restrict. These aren’t found in your average every day beatdown. To run this takes a lot of consideration.

Ok…so I’m not seeing its potential…=/

As I've mentioned before, I STILL don't like Fusion cards all that much. But with this new card, it makes them much easier.
In essence, Metamorphosis allows you to take one monster from the field, and replace it with a fusion monster of the same level. Of course, you lose that monster, which can be a downside (depending on the card).
Some fusion cards that can be used in a Metamorphosis deck would be Reaper of the Nightmare, and Last Warrior FAP (if you like him).
The OBVIOUS use of this card is with fusions, and you should carry cards the same level as the fusions in your deck. I've seen many a player use this card and have no corresponding monster level cards ><.
I see a nice future for these decks, especially for those who LOVE fusions and have never thought them playable. This card will definitely make them playable. It also may also carry room for another type of deck within it (like Zombie, perhaps?)

Vodkam Friday 09/08/03: Metamorphosis
Normal Magic
PGD-090

Offer 1 monster on your side of the field as a Tribute to Special Summon 1 Fusion Monster of the same Level in face-up Attack or Defense Position from your Fusion Deck. Monsters used for a Tribute Summon or that are offered as Tribute due to other card's effects are excluded.

This is a neat card. It's a lot of fun and has also brought some playability to fusion monsters.

Let's do some math:

Typical Fusion
2 Monsters + 1 Polymerization or Fusion Gate = 3 cards
This varies on the fusion and the fusion material monsters as well as whether or not they fused from your hand. The total can be anywhere from 3 to 6 cards.

Metamorphosis (Level 7 or higher fusion)
1 Level 7 or higher monster (tributed for which totals 3 cards) + Metamorphosis = 4 cards 1 Level 7 or higher monster (discarded and revived which totals 2 cards) + Metamorphosis = 3 cards

Metamorphosis (Level 5 or 6 fusion)
1 Level 5 or 6 monster (tributed for which totals 2 card) + Metamorphosis = 3 cards 1 Level 5 or 6 monster (discarded and revived which totals 2 cards) + Metamorphosis = 3 cards

Metamorphosis (Level 4 or lower fusion)
1 Level 4 or lower monster + Metamorphosis = 2 cards

So, the math shows that for the most part, Metamorphosis is a more economical way of getting fusion monsters onto the field. Now, you say, "There aren't any good low level fusions. I think Fusionist is the best one." Well, you're wrong. The best low level fusion is Thousand-Eyes Restrict (TER) which is now amazingly easy to get onto the field with its whopping 1 star. Sinister Serpent, Kuriboh, Magician of Faith and a few others can all be used to bring out TER. Even then, having the option of turning your Airknight Parshath into Dark Balter the Terrible (which I think is the best fusion monster around) makes for a very hard deck to play against. Did your opponent get a Mystical Knight of Jackal onto the field? Use Change of Heart and Metamorphosis to turn him into The Last Warrior From Another Planet (which I think is the second best fusion). There are an infinite number of ways to use this card. One thing you should do is load your fusion deck up with at least 1 monster of every star level so you always have the option of sacrificing your opponent's monsters after you've taken control of them.

I know I make this card sound better than sliced bread. It's a pretty good card but it has some downsides:

1. The monster you sacrifice has to be the EXACT same stars as the one you're summoning. Getting the right monster out might take some effort. 2. The monster you bring out or might bring out may not even help you, in which case, you've burned this card for nothing. 3. If your monster is bounced back to your hand, it goes back into your fusion deck instead 4. The monster is not considered to be properly summoned so when it is destroyed, you cannot revive it. 5. Very high level fusions are basically off-limits. After all, are you going to have a 9 star monster to tribute to bring out Black Skull Dragon? Besides, if you did, it's probably already a pretty formidable monster.

All in all, a fun card which might see some tournament play. I'm still waiting to see the slew of people playing TER decks which should make things interesting to say the least.
