Konami and Upper Deck Release

Fifth Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME Booster Set

Game is nominated for three Toy Industry Association’s 2002 Toy of the Year Awards

CARLSBAD, Calif. (Jan. 17, 2003) — The Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME dueling drama just got hotter with the addition of “Labyrinth of Nightmare” to the game’s powerful battery of booster sets. Konami, the game’s manufacturer, and Upper Deck Entertainment, the exclusive North American distributor, have released the “Labyrinth of Nightmare” Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME booster set, hitting major retailers nationwide in February.

In the meantime, the collectible game has been nominated for three Toy Industry Association 2002 Toy of the Year awards: Game of the Year, Licensed Toy of the Year (for the team and/or company responsible for the successful marriage between a property and product), and the coveted People’s Choice Toy of the Year award.  Winners will be announced at the third annual T.O.T.Y. Awards Ceremony on Feb. 15 in New York City, kicking off the 2003 Toy Fair.

“Labyrinth of Nightmare” is the fifth booster set released by Konami and Upper Deck since the game’s North American introduction in spring 2002.  Earlier Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME booster sets include “Legend of Blue Eyes White Dragon,” “Metal Raiders,” “Magic Ruler” and “Pharaoh’s Servant.”

The first booster set to be released in 2003, “Labyrinth of Nightmare” is a 103-card expansion deck, including 17 Rare, 10 Super Rare and 10 Ultra Rare cards.  Each nine-card booster pack offers one Rare card, and has an SRP of $3.99.

“The ‘Labyrinth of Nightmare’ booster set brings Duelists more Magic, Trap and Effect Monster cards than any previous set,” said Jerry Bennington, vice president of Upper Deck Entertainment. “Players can strategically customize their decks to become the most powerful Duelist. It will take skill, practice, strategy and luck to emerge victorious from the match.”

Each card in the “Labyrinth of Nightmare” booster pack has the potential to cause roadblocks to an opponent’s Deck strategy during any dueling scenario.  Monster, Magic and Trap cards contained in “Labyrinth of Nightmare” have more specific and powerful capabilities than found in previous sets.  The latest booster set also includes more effective Magic and Trap Cards, allowing a player to take an advantage during a Duel, instead of relying on simple Monster to Monster Duels.

During the game, players duel each other by summoning monsters and activating magic and trap cards.  Using a Starter Deck and/or booster sets, Duelists collect cards to play their hands against other players.  Players with well-constructed Decks, powerful monsters, solid strategy and a little good fortune are the winners in the Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME.

The demand for booster sets has continued to increase as more players join the game and compete in the Duelist King Tournament, held in stores across North America running Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME sanctioned events.
