Location: Comic Warehouse, Brampton, Ontario, Canada Format: Booster Draft (Odyssey, Torment, Judgment) I have to admit that this draft wasn't that bad although I didn't get in to the final four. Anyways, it's because of the fact that I snagged five rares in which a few are quite interesting and handy. Eventually, I built a 40 card deck around...actually, I didn't really think of a theme but I had plenty of cards for card advantage, a few heavy creatures, some counter magic, plenty of life gain and stuff that can be used during my opponent's combat phase. Check out the deck. Land 7 Island 5 Plains 5 Mountain Blue Spells and Creatures 1 Obsessive Search 1 Compulsion 1 Grip of Amnesia 1 Laquatus's Disdain 1 Plagiarize 1 Web of Intertia 1 Aven Fisher 1 Wormfang Manta 1 Wormfang Behemoth 1 Peek 1 Keep Watch 1 Hapless Researcher White Spells and Creatures 1 Chastise 1 Second Thoughts 1 Life Burst 1 Teroh's Faithful 1 Suntail Hawk 1 Battlewise Aven 1 Pay No Heed 1 Phantom Nomad Red Spells and Creatures 1 Firebolt 1 Flame Burst 1 Anger 1 Barbarian Lunatic 1 Crackling Club 1 Accelerate 1 Longhorn Firebeast 1 Pardic Lancer Had I known I was going to get card advantage spells like these, I would have drafted Solitary Confinement. Would have pissed anybody off who didn't have enchantment kill. Round 1 - Isaac Tong VS Jon Corbett Game 1, he got mana screwed. Big time. I eventually killed him with a flyer on the board. And of course, the Web of Inertia helped things a bit. He had some better stuff in game 2 and I was a little worried but Chastise saved my ass as well as a few other cards. Eventually, the Wormfang Manta came into play and I had enough defenders to stall until I could finish him off. Rounds 1-0 Games 2-0 Round 2 - Isaac Tong VS Jamie Hoyles Now this is where I became more worried as this guy was tough. He used a red and green deck with Basking Rootwalla. During the match, he informed me that he had 42 of those little bastards, including a foil version. Anyways, he slowly chipped away at my life in game 1 but then the true power of my deck showed itself. That's right!! I stalled like hell. And when he tried to use Reckless Charge and flash it back...it would have killed me right there but Laquatus's Disdain saved my ass!!! Teroh's Faithful and Life Burst kept my life up and I had several defenders that were able to help things a bit. I slowly got him down to 8 life and then I drew the game winner. I cast Firebolt, flashed it back, then cast Flame Burst and killed him with a Battlewise Aven with Threshold. Booyah!!! In game 2, he had enough speed to get past my stalling tactics. Then in game 3, it was my Aven Fisher going in for the victory while I had enough stuff to hold off Jamie's army. Talk about a close call. Rounds 2-0 Games 4-1 Round 3 - Isaac Tong VS Robert Frac His deck was a bit more versatile and more well balanced. Blue control combined with red and green speed. Plus the fact that he snagged a good weapon for blue. The Skywing Aven beat me up in game 1 and in game 2...it did it again except with a few Wurm tokens right behind it. Rounds 2-1 Games 4-3 Round 4 - Isaac Tong VS Jon Fanalaro His deck focused around one enchantment. Screams of the Damned. The only thing that went through my mind was...why the hell didn't I draft any enchantment kill?!? That card ultimately gave him the edge in game 1. Game 2, he could have had it but he made a critical mistake and my Wormfang Behemoth punched through for the victory. In the third game...I was doing well until he threw two Soul Scourges at me from out of nowhere, taking me down to 4. Then eventually, Screams hammered the final nail on my coffin. Rounds 2-2 Games 5-5 I really could have used an Aven Cloudchaser to blast that stupid enchantment but none really came around during draft time. I was surprised that Jon didn't use Faceless Butcher. That would have really pissed me off. Let's get down to props and slops. Props Me for snagging all those decent rares. My folks for putting up with this. Slops Me for not drafting any enchantment kill. Oh, well. Live and learn. That's it for me. Until next time. Isaac Tong ditong@ipoline.com
