Zombie Tech Deck - Whateverdot, New York - May 27, 2006- Shaddymaze

A-hoy-hoy, this is Shaddymaze again. My last article got some positive feedback, so I've decided to write another one. Brace

yourselves. Yes, it is another highly detailed turn-by-turn, duel-by-duel analysis of the tournament I went to. I went to

Whateverdot, located in Brooklyn, New York, on May 27, 2006, and around 14 people showed up (F.Y.I.- I've given

fictitious names in order to protect their identities). It was in Swiss format, where we play four matches and the top player

gets 8 packs of the new Enemy of Justice set. Predictably, I was running my Zombie Tech Deck.

Torrential Tribute

The tournament coordinator, Jinzo (no really, I'm not making this one up, that's what they call him) walks into the room wearing

a black shirt that says "Gamer" on it with a look on his face as if "The Empire Strikes Back" were playing in the background.

He posts the listing for the first match on the wall and we begin.

My first opponent is Chuckles. I've seen this kid come into Whateverdot before. He's a youngster who likes dueling. He has a

lot of potential in his aggressive style, but he's still in the "Yugi phase" where he gets inspiration from the show and not from his

own intuition as to what's worth running. He currently runs a Destiny Hero Deck to counter the Element Hero Deck his friend

runs. I was dueling with them before the tournament began to see what I would be facing using my Rock Deck, a secondary

deck I constructed just so see how effective the flip-face-down monsters are. Come to find out, Golem Sentry is one of the

most annoying monsters every created. I've had opponents play Torrential Tribute, Mirror Force, D.D. Warrior Lady, Snatch

Steal, and Dark Hole against a lone Golem Sentry. I saw Chuckles was using some cards from the new set.

Match #1

Duel #1

I roll the dice and win. Deciding to go first, I draw and my hand has a Nobleman of Crossout (Crossout), Sakuretsu Armor

(Sakuretsu), Mobius the Frost Monarch (Mobius), Mystical Space Typhoon (MST), Regenerating Mummy (Regenerating),

and Swords of Revealing Light (Swords). I summon Regenerating and set the MST and end my turn.

He draws, and plays Dark World Lightning on my MST discarding an H-Heated, one of the cards from the new set. When he

activated I was starting to dread Dark World, but after reading this H-Heated, I began to wonder what his deck was really

going for. He plays Snatch Steal (Snatch) on my Regenerating and I take the 1800 from his attack (I'm at 6200). He sets one

Spell or Trap (S/T) and ends his turn.

I draw Graceful Charity (Graceful), and gain 1000 during my standby phase (I'm at 7200). I use the Graceful and get

Torrential Tribute (Torrential), Magical Merchant (Merchant), and Ryu Kokki. I dump Ryu Kokki and Swords and then set

the Merchant and the Sakuretsu behind it and end.

He draws and plays Crossout on my Merchant, neither of us have any other copies in our decks. He attacks with the

Regenerating and I activate the Sakuretsu, destroying it. Then he sets one S/T and ends.

I draw Pyramid Turtle, which I summon and attack with, he activates Threatening Roar stopping my attack. I set the Crossout

as a bluff, and end. He activates the S/T he just set, Dust Tornado (Dust), on my Crossout at the end phase.

He draws, and with two cards in his hand activates another Dark World Lightning on my Pyramid Turtle, discarding another

H-Heated. And with nothing on the field and nothing in his hand, he ends his turn.

I draw a Magician of Faith (Faith). Now I have a Mobius, Torrential, and Faith in my hand. I set the Faith and the Torrential

just in case and end my turn.

He draws and summons Cyber Tutu, a 1000 attack monster from the latest set. What it is doing in his deck, I will never know.

He chuckles while he attacks my face down monster with it. Faith gets me back Graceful. He ends.

I draw Sangan and decide to summon it and suicide with his Cyber Tutu. And I search for Treeborn Frog (Treeborn), making

Graceful less costly. If he summons anything my Torrential can take care of it. I play Graceful and get Cyber Dragon,

Morphing Jar, and Bottomless Trap Hole (Bottomless). I dump Morphing Jar and Treeborn. Then I end my turn with just

Torrential on field and a Mobius, Cyber Dragon, and Bottomless Trap Hole in my hand.

He draws and sets one S/T and ends.

I draw a Pyramid Turtle and summon it and attack. He takes the 1200 and I end (he's at 6800).

He draws and sets one monster and ends.

I draw a Rush Recklessly. Hoping for a Spirit Reaper (Reaper) I attack his facedown monster with Pyramid Turtle to find an

1800 defense Cyber Gymnist, another one of the new cards. I activated Rush Recklessly on Turtle to pump him to 1900 just

to destroy it. And then I ended my turn.

He draws and immediately plays the freshly drawn Fissure. I comment at how Pyramid Turtle is always smashed to the

ground, and falling into holes and fissures. He chuckles a little before ending.

I draw a Regenerating, which I summon. He takes the 1800 attack (he's at 5000). I check the graveyards and see that my

Treeborn may not be coming back anytime soon, since my torrential is still on the field. I end.

He draws and activates his set S/T, Call of the Haunted, on Cyber Gymnist and sacrifices it for Swift Birdman Joe, a 2300

attacker from the new set, which prompts my Torrential. With another clear field, he ends.

I draw Snatch, and finally special summon Treeborn. I sacrifice it for Cyber Dragon and attack directly for 2100

(he's at 2900). Then I end.

He draws and immediately summons Exiled Force and takes out my Cyber Dragon. And then ends.

I draw another Mobius and special summon Treeborn during my Standby Phase. I sacrifice it for one of the Mobius' in my

hand and attack for 2400 directly (he's at 500). Then I end.

He draws and sets one monster, chuckling the entire time, saying "just when I need it," and he ends.

I draw a D.D. Assailant, and special summon the Treeborn in defense. I Summon DD Assailant and attack the facedown with

Mobius, which takes out a another Cyber Gymnist. D.D. Assailant finishes his life points. For the first duel this tournament, it

felt odd not seeing many zombies come out this game, but I'm sure they'll come around.

Duel #2

He opts to go first. After drawing, he summons Brron, Mad King of Dark World (Brron), and sets one S/T. Then he ends.

I draw and have Heavy Storm (Heavy), Treeborn, Call of the Haunted, Book of Life, Pyramid Turtle, and Confiscation. I pay

1000 for Confiscation and see his hand of Crossout, Captain Tenacious, Fissure, and Premature Burial (Premature)

(I'm at 7000). I have to read Captain Tenacious, since it's one of the new cards. I choose the Crossout since I plan on setting

the Pyramid Turtle. Then I safely set the Pyramid Turtle and end.

He draws and attacks my face down Pyramid Turtle with Brron. Pyramid Turtle gets me a Vampire Lord (V. Lord) from my

deck. He tries to activate his face down Bottomless on V. Lord, but I inform him of the ruling about it being a special summon

during the damage step. I let him keep the Bottomless set since it was an inappropriate activation. But it was advantageous to

know. Then he summons Captain Tenacious and sets one S/T and ends.

I draw a Premature and play Heavy on his two set S/T's, a Bottomless and a D-Sheild, which he informs me he was going to

activate if I attacked his Captain Tenacious. It's one of those new cards that has synergy with other cards from the set, but no

where else. Why Konami? WHY? I attack Brron with V. Lord, and he takes the 200 and losses a trap from his deck, D-time

(he's at 7800). After seeing the picture I say, "you've got to be kidding me," which elicits a chuckle. Then I set the Treeborn and

end my turn with no S/T's on the field. I have a Call of the Haunted, Book of Life, and Premature in hand.

He draws and puts Captain Tenacious in defense and ends his turn.

I draw a Dust and then by paying 800 I play Premature on Pyramid Turtle and attack Captain with it. V. Lords takes a bite of

2000 and yet another D-time (he's at 5800, I'm at 6200). I also set the Dust before ending.

He draws and activates Heavy, which I wince at. It destroys my Pyramid Turtle with Premature on it and the Dust I just set.

Then he pays 800 for his own Premature on his Brron and activates Fissure on my V. Lord (he's at 5000). He attacks my face

down Treeborn. Then he sets one S/T and ends, having committed his entire hand to the field.

I draw Reaper (as if I needed him right now) and during my Standby Phase special summon V. lord in attack mode and

Treeborn in Defense. There was something fitting about that (If you ask me, Treeborn should be a Zombie, but I'm not getting

into that right now). Then I attacked with V. Lord to his Brron, which activated his one set S/T, a Threatening Roar, saving

his monster and his life points for the turn. I set the Reaper and end.

He draws and summons Destiny Hero-Doom Lord (Doom Lord), which he informs me can remove a monster on my side for

two turns. After reading the card for myself I allow the effect to resolve and my V. Lord is removed from play. He tries

attacking, but I inform him that according to Doom Lord he can't attack the same turn he uses the effect. He then ends.

I draw another Reaper. At this points I'm sick of seeing these Destiny Heroes. So I play Book of Life on my Pyramid Turtle

removing his Captain Tenacious and attack his Doom Lord with it, he takes the 600 damage (he's at 4400). I have few worries

about leaving a weak Pyramid Turtle in attack mode. I welcome him attacking it with Brron. I end my turn.

He draws and sets one S/T and attacks my face down Reaper with Brron. Then he ends.

I draw a Book of Life. I'll be getting V. Lord back during his next Standby Phase, so I decide to take some damage and

suicide Turtle into Brron. I take the 600 damage and special summon another V. Lord, since they seem to be difficult for him to

deal with. Then I attack with the new V. Lord to his Brron for 200 damage and taking a D-shield from his deck (he's at 4200,

I'm at 5600). I can tell this kid knows what's working in his deck and what's not from his discards with V. Lord. Why is he

running Destiny Heroes with Dark World? Then I end my turn.

He draws and during his Standby Phase my V. Lord comes back to my side. I comment that this old V. Lord is tired having

attacked, gone to the graveyard, and sent to the different dimension. He chuckles and sets the only card in his hand, a monster.

Then he ends with one set to each zone.

I draw Goldd, Wu-Lord of Dark World (Goldd) and decide to sacrifice the Treeborn for Goldd. It's nice not having to worry

about a Torrential when you have two V. Lords on the field. He activates Trap Hole on Goldd. I attack with one V. Lord to

his monster, a Brron, and the other takes 2000 out of his life points and a Call of the Haunted out of his deck (he's at 2200).

His field and hand are clear.

He draws and sets one monster before ending.

I draw Mirror Force and special summon the Treeborn in defense. Then I put Reaper into attack mode and attack with

V. Lord to his face down Captain Tenacious and the other V. Lord and Reaper finish him for game.

My second opponent was Scooper. This guy comes in with some of his friends. He's the odd one out since he's quieter than

rest, who are, to say the least, never silent about winning or losing, or breathing for that matter. They try to rush their opponent's

turn by asking "end?" over and over again, which I suppose is an effective tactic. If they know they can't win they'll scoop

immediately without even trying to bluff and possibly save themselves for a turn. I guess they're allowed to play in the tournament

because one of the coordinators, Be Bad, likes to have them around for pizza consumption. I've come to know Scooper as a

very good veteran who knows how to properly construct and use a deck (once he made this Burn Deck which tore me to

pieces). I'm sure this duel will be a challenge.

Match #2

Duel #1

He wins the dice roll and opts to go first. He draws and plays Graceful. He discards Return from the Different Dimension

(Return) and Treeborn. Then he sets one monster and one S/T before ending.

I draw and have Premature, Bottomless, Mobius, Faith, Morphing Jar, and Pyramid Turtle. I set the Pyramid Turtle and the

Bottomless. Then I end.

He draws and flip summons a Faith to get back Graceful and he plays it. He dumps a Zaborg the Thunder Monarch (Zaborg)

and a Cyber Dragon. Then he sacrifices his Faith for another Zaborg destroying my Pyramid Turtle, and my set Bottomless

takes him out of play, but he pays 800 for Premature on the Zaborg he just dumped and attacks me directly for 2400

(he's at 7200, I'm at 5600). Then he ends.

I draw and get a V. Lord. I decide at this point to go crazy and overextend playing Premature on my Pyramid Turtle by paying

800 and sacrificing it for Mobius to destroy his set S/T, a Sakuretsu, and the Premature on his Thunder Monarch. I attack for a

surprising 2400 and end my turn (We're both at 4800). Mobius did his job and remains floating. Good for him. I end.

He draws and special summons Treeborn in defense and sets one S/T and one monster and ends with three cards in hand

one set monster and one set S/T along with a Treeborn.

I draw a Merchant and have in my hand Merchant, Faith, Morphing Jar, and V. Lord with the lone Mobius on the field. I

attack his face down with Mobius, a Reaper. Faith won't get me anything, so I set the Merchant before ending.

He draws and sets one monster and plays Crossout on my Merchant, and he removes the one in his deck from play. He ends.

I draw a Regenerating and attack with Mobius to his face down Dekoichi the Battlechanted Locomotive (Dekoichi), and he

draws from the effect. I decide the Morphing Jar would help me out and take away the excessive drawing power he's been

getting. So I set the Morphing jar and end.

He draws and sets one monster and one S/T and ends. His field has two set S/T's, a face down monster and a Treeborn with

a Reaper.

I draw Pyramid Turtle and decide to set it before flipping Morphing Jar. He winces, which makes me a little happier, but I

gained very little advantage. He dumps Book of Moon and Bottomless and draws five new cards, at which point he thanks me.

I dump Faith, V. Lord, and Regenerating, then draw another Faith, Bottomless, Book of life, MST, and Sakuretsu. Hoping to

remove that Treeborn I attack with Morphing Jar to it, which he allows. But my attack with Mobius to his face down activates

his set Sakuretsu. I play Book of Life on my V. Lord to remove his Treeborn, which prompts him to activate his set

Call of the Haunted on his Treeborn, just to save it, but I play MST on it from hand. I get the V. Lord and his Treeborn is

removed from play. Knowing he has those monarchs I set the Bottomless and end my turn.

He draws and sacrifices his face down D.D. Warrior Lady for a Mobius, which I activate Bottomless on. Thank you intuition.

He sets one S/T and ends. I'm getting back some of the advantage.

I draw Heavy. His one set S/T does not deserve me using the Heavy, so I opt to put Morphing Jar into defense and then attack

his Reaper with my V. Lord just because I can. Besides it might activate Sakuretsu or Mirror Force

(which has happened before), but he does not activate anything in response to the attack. I then set the Sakuretsu and the Faith.

Then I end with only Heavy in my hand. Just then I realize that I'm over committing to the field.

He draws and has five cards in hand and ends. As if his set S/T and Reaper were enough to hold me off.

I draw a Rush Recklessly and flip the Faith to get back MST, which I use on his face down S/T, a Mirror Force then I activate

Rush Recklessly on his Reaper and I put everything into attack mode and attack with Faith, Morphing Jar, V. Lord and

Pyramid Turtle for 4200 damage and taking a trap from his deck, Dust (he's at 600). That's what he gets for being too

conservative.

He draws and summons Tsukuyomi targeting Morphing Jar and sets two S/T's and then activates Swords, putting

Morphing Jar face up. He dumps Breaker the Magical Warrior (Breaker) and a Reaper and draws five cards. I have to dump

the Heavy and draw Snatch, Ryu Kokki, Mobius, Confiscation, and Pyramid Turtle. He attacks my Magican with Tsukuyomi,

but I activate Sakuretsu on it. Then he ends his turn.

I draw a Dust, and then sacrifice the Faith for Mobius to destroy his Swords and one of his face down S/T's, a Return,

which he activates. He pays half his life points to put Treeborn in defense and a Zaborg and a Mobius in attack mode

(he's at 300). Knowing his Mirror Force is already gone, I decide to go all out. I play Snatch on his Mobius and he scoops,

showing me the Sakuretsu he had face down. I give that game to Snatch.

Duel #2

He decides to go first for our second duel. He draws his 6th, and then he sets one card to each zone before ending.

I draw and have Regenerating, Reaper, Sakuretsu, Reaper, Treeborn, and Book of Life. I summon Regenerating and attack his

Dekoichi, and he draws one card. I set the Sakuretsu before ending, and he activates his set S/T, Dust, on my Sakuretsu. And

chooses to set a S/T with its effect.

He draws and sets one monster and ends.

I draw a Call of the Haunted and attack with Regenerating into a merchant which fetches immediately a Snatch. I set the

Reaper and end my turn.

He draws and ends his turn with 5 cards in hand and one set S/T. It must be good. I suspect a Mirror Force.

I draw D.D. Assailant and attack with Regenerating and he activates Scapegoats. I attack one goat token and set the Treeborn

before ending.

He draws and sets one monster and special summons a Chaos Sorcerer (Chaos) in attack mode by removing his Merchant and

Dekoichi from play. Then he chooses to remove my Regenerating with its effect. I don't know why, he had the free attack just

to do some damage. Maybe he thinks I'm also running Chaos/Return and is trying to starve my graveyard. He ends.

I draw a Crossout, which I use on his face down monster, a Faith, stripping two copies from my deck and one more from his.

Then I summon the D.D. Assailant and attack the Chaos, taking the 600 damage and removing both monster (I'm at 7400).

Then I end my turn.

He draws and uses Crossout on my Treeborn, my face down Reaper is safe. Then he sets one S/T and ends his turn.

I draw Graceful, and use it getting Breaker, Torrential, and Swords. I dump Swords and Call of the Haunted. I summon

Breaker and after a while he allows Breaker to get his counter and break his Torrential. I attack one of the goats. Then end my

turn.

He draws and finally activates his Snatch on Breaker and attacks my face down with it, discovering Reaper he activates

Smashing Ground (Smashing) on it during Main Phase 2. Then he ends.

I draw a Mirror Force and gain 1000 during my Standby Phase for Snatch (I'm at 8400). I then set the Reaper and the

Torrential, just in case, and end.

He draws and attacks with my Breaker to my set Reaper, prompting another Smashing. I would seem that history does repeat

itself. Then he ends.

I draw Cyber Dragon and gain 1000 (I'm at 9400). I special summon the Cyber Dragon and attack my Breaker, doing 500 to

him (he's at 7500). I have a Book of Life and Mirror Force in hand and a Cyber dragon and an Torrential on the field. With

that I end my turn.

He draws and sets the freshly drawn monster to accompany his two remaining goats. Then he ends.

I draw Goldd and attack his new face down monster with Cyber Dragon, a Sangan. Sangan searches for D.D. Warrior Lady.

Then I end my turn.

He draws and sets one monster and ends.

I draw Sangan and summon it and attack a goat with Sangan and the face down monster with Cyber Dragon, revealing a

D.D. Assailant removing both. I note the D.D. Warrior Lady is still in his hand before ending.

He draws and summons D.D. Warrior Lady, which makes me activate Torrential clearing the field of his D.D. Warrior Lady

and goat along with my Sangan. I search for Pyramid Turtle with Sangan. Then he removes his DD Warrior Lady and Sangan

to special summon a Chaos in attack mode and attacks me directly for 2300. Then he ends his turn.

I draw a Dust. Since he only has one card in his hand I decide to overextend. I summon the Pyramid Turtle and attack into

Chaos taking 1100 and special summon a Ryu Kokki with the Pyramid Turtle's effect. I then attack with it into Chaos doing

100 to him (he's at 7400, I'm at 8300). And then I set the Dust and end.

He draws and he activates Heavy on my Dust. And then he sets one monster and ends with just the face down monster on his

field and nothing in his hand.

I draw Confiscation. What a perfect time for it. Then I attack with Ryu Kokki into his face down monster, a Reaper. Then I

set the Mirror Force and end my turn.

He draws and sets one S/T and ends.

I draw Mobius and I end.

He draws and ends.

I draw Snatch, and sacrifice Ryu Kokki for Mobius to destroy his S/T a Return, which he chooses not to activate, since he has

plenty of life. Then I activate Snatch on his Reaper and activate the Book of Life to special my own Reaper in attack mode

removing his Reaper from his graveyard. Then I attack directly with 2700 and he drops the Tsukuyomi

in his hand for my Reaper's effect (he's at 4700). I end my turn with him having no hand or field.

He draws, and sucks his teeth, as he ends.

I draw Rush Recklessly and attack with 2700 and he drops a Mobius for my Reaper (he's at 2000). Then I end my turn.

He draws and sets one S/T and ends.

I draw Heavy and decide it's worth my Mirror Force for game. I activate the Heavy and he scoops. It would have destroyed

two Mirror Forces, though. We compliment each other on our playing and shoot the breeze a little after the duel. It's nice when

your opponent can take a loss without making it seem like you personally insulted him or her.

My third opponent was Brute. I've never seen this guy at Whateverdot before, but it's explained in a conversation I

"overheard." He's been away at college and hasn't played Yu-Gi-Oh! for a while. He's friends with the same group as Scooper

and is playing a Return Deck. I don't want to underestimate Brute so I won't let the fact that he's been away from the game

make me go easy on him. This is the third match and he's gotten this far. Clearly he knows how to play.

Match #3

Duel #1

He wins the dice roll and goes first. He draws and plays Graceful and dumps Mobius and Smashing. Then sets one monster

and one S/T and ends.

I draw and have Treeborn, Reaper, Sakuretsu, Sangan, Breaker, and Ryu Kokki. A monster heavy hand, but I hope to wait

it out by setting the Reaper and the Sakuretsu and end.

He draws and flip summons a D.D. Warrior Lady and activates Crossout on my Reaper and attacks with D.D. Warrior Lady

and I activate Sakuretsu armor on it and he activates his set S/T, Call of the Haunted, on his Mobius and attacks again with it

doing 2400 to me (I'm at 5600). Then he sets one monster and ends.

I draw Morphing Jar, which could save my hand, but I'll let it ride a little longer. I summon Breaker, and destroy the

Call of the Haunted with his counter taking out Mobius and attack his face down monster, Faith, getting him back Graceful.

Then I end my turn.

He draws and activates Graceful and discards Sakuretsu and Tsukuyomi. Then he special summons Chaos in attack mode by

removing D.D. Warrior Lady and Tsukuyomi and attacks my Breaker doing 700 to me (I'm at 4900). Then he sets one S/T

and ends. I wonder why he didn't just summon the Tsukuyomi and attack the Breaker. He's overextending for nothing.

At this point Jinzo comes around to watch the duel. I draw a Crossout and decide to set the Morphing Jar. He's been drawing

too much with that Graceful. Time to even things up. Then I set the Crossout and end.

He draws and plays Heavy destroying his own Mirror Force and my Crossout. He's really protecting that Chaos. Then he

attacks with Chaos revealing the Morphing Jar. Bringing a look of disgust on his face as he dumps a Torrential, Swords, and

Cyber Dragon compared to my Sangan, Treeborn, and Ryu Kokki. He draws five and so do I. I get Book of Life,

D.D. Assailant, Torrential, MST, and Reaper. Then he sets one monster and ends.

I draw a Faith and special summon the Treeborn in defense. Then I play Book of Life to bring back the Ryu Kokki and remove

his Faith. Having experience against these Return decks, I've learned not to remove their big monsters. Then I attack his Chaos,

doing 100 to him and then I set my Faith and the MST (he's at 7900). I'm always weary of Snatch or Premature with large

monster in play. Then I end.

He draws and plays Snatch on my Ryu Kokki, which gets destroyed by my MST. Then he sets one monster and ends.

I draw Regenerating and flip summon my set Faith to get back Crossout, which I play on one of his face down monsters,

a Merchant. One copy of Merchant is removed from my deck. Then I summon the Reaper and attack his other face down

with Ryu Kokki revealing a Reaper of his own, stopping my attack. Then I end.

He draws and sets a monster and ends.

I draw V. Lord and attack his new monster with Ryu Kokki revealing a DD Assailant, which removes both from play. Then

I put Reaper and Faith into defense and end.

He draws and sets one monster and ends.

I draw Swords and sacrifice the Faith for V. Lord and attack the new face down with it, a Faith, getting him back Snatch.

I activate the Swords, just in case he can get past my set up. Then I end.

He draws and activates Snatch on my V. Lord and sacrifices it for a Zaborg, destroying my Reaper. Then he ends and I only

have Swords to protect me, making me thankful for having activated it. The first turn on Swords is over.

I draw a Cyber Dragon and set the D.D. Assailant and the Torrential, just in case he has the Mobius. Then I end.

He draws and summons Breaker, which promptly activates Torrential taking out my D.D. Assailant and his Zaborg,

Spirit Reaper, and Breaker. Then he sets one S/T and ends. The second turn on Swords is over.

I draw Book of Life and summon Regenerating for some attack, but he activates Bottomless on it, which clears the way for my

Book of Life on my Reaper removing his Reaper from play. I attack his clear field directly with 300 and take a Sangan from

his hand, leaving his hand at one card (he's at 7600). Then I end.

He draws and pays 800 to activate Premature on his Chaos and removes my Spirit Reaper with his effect and sets one S/T

and ends (he's at 6800). The third turn of Swords is over and it is sent to the graveyard.

I draw a V. Lord, which accompanies the Cyber Dragon in my hand. Then I special summon from the grave the Treeborn

which has been waiting for just this moment. And trying to save it from his Chaos, I sacrifice Treeborn for a face down

Cyber Dragon. Then I end.

He draws a miracle Crossout and activates it on my set Cyber Dragon. He let's out a hearty laugh that sounds like an elephant

giving birth, and he attacks directly with Chaos for 2300 (I'm at 2600). Then and ends.

I draw Confiscation, just when I need it seeing as he has no cards in his hand. Then I special the Treeborn in defense and

decide to sacrifice it for V. Lord face down.

He draws and attacks with Chaos destroying the V. Lord and he sets a S/T to accompany his other. Jinzo, the coordinator,

likes to observe duels and often glances at both players hands and field to get a grasp of the situation. During this particular

turn he decides to observe the top card of my deck and then walks away as if he already knows who's going to win.

I draw Mirror Force and choose not to get the Treeborn and set the Mirror Force. When I end my turn he activates his set

MST on it.

He draws and summons Dekoichi and activates Return, paying half of his life points to get back D.D. Warrior Lady,

D.D. Assailant, and Reaper onto his field and attacks me with everything for game. Losing the first duel makes it that much

more difficult to win the Match, but it all depends on the draw.

Duel #2

My crushing defeat allows me to go first. I draw and have Breaker, Mobius, Bottomless, Premature, Goldd, and

D.D. Assailant. I set the Bottomless and the D.D. Assailant and end.

He draws and activates MST on my Bottomless and sets one monster before ending.

I draw Regenerating. Suspecting a small flip effect monster on his side or at worst a Reaper I summon the Regenerating and

flip summon the D.D. Assailant. I attack with the D.D. Assailant into a Dekoichi, allowing him to draw a card. Then

Regenerating takes 1800 out of his life (he's at 6200). Then I end.

He draws and plays Graceful dumping a Jinzo and Dust. Then he pays 800 to play Premature to get back Jinzo (he's at 5400).

Then he sets one monster and attacks my Regenerating with Jinzo, doing 700 to me (I'm at 7300). Then he ends.

I draw Heavy and now have Breaker, Heavy, Mobius, Goldd, and Premature in my hand. That Premature is gone one way

or another. I summon the Breaker to destroy the Premature, killing Jinzo in the process. Then I attack with Breaker to his face

down monster, a Faith, giving him back Graceful, and D.D. Assailant takes 1700 out of his life (he's at 3700).

Then I end my turn.

He draws and plays Graceful, dumping Swords and Torrential. Then he special summons Chaos in attack mode by removing

Jinzo and Faith and removes my D.D. Assailant with its effect. Then he sets one monster and ends.

I draw Faith and sacrifice the Breaker for Mobius and attack his Chaos doing 100 to him, then set the Heavy and end

(he's at 3600).

He draws and flips his face down monster Dekoichi. He draws again and plays Snatch and then summons a Reaper.

With Premature, Faith, and a Goldd in my hand he attacks, and I ask which one first, he says Reaper, doing 300 to me and

to both of our amazements picks Goldd, which destroys Snatch and the Reaper. Mobius is back on my side of the field

(I'm at 7000). He comments on how I was being tricky by asking him which monster attacked first. People, honestly, this is

why you've got to attack with Reaper last. Duelists are side decking in Goldd against control, lesson learned! He sets one

S/T and ends.

I draw V. Lord and activate my set Heavy on his one S/T, a Sakuretsu. Then after some calculations, I play Premature on

Breaker and attack with everything for game.

Duel #3

For the last duel of our match he opts to go first. He draws and sets one monster and ends.

I draw and have Ryu Kokki, Snatch, Cyber Dragon, Torrential, Reaper, and Morphing Jar. Hoping for a direct hit I special

summon the Cyber Dragon and normal summon the  Reaper. I attack with Dragon to his Treeborn and Reaper takes out 300

and hits a D.D. Assailant (he's at 7700). Then I end my turn.

He draws and special summons the Treeborn in defense and summons Tsukuyomi putting Cyber Dragon into defense and then

plays Book of Moon on my Reaper. He then plays Crossout on the Reaper. Then he sets one S/T before he ends. I don't know

why he didn't just attack through the Reaper for some damage and then play Book of Moon and Crossout on it. It was a free

attack. There is something about this guy; he's playing with a metagame deck, but not with a metagame style.

I draw a Sakuretsu and flip summon the Cyber Dragon, which he activates Bottomless on. I set the Morphing Jar, Torrential

and Sakuretsu and end with Snatch and Ryu Kokki in hand.

He draws and he plays Heavy on my Torrential and Sakuretsu, and then he sets one monster and ends with only one card in

hand.

I draw a Bottomless and sacrifice the Morphing Jar without flipping it for Ryu Kokki and attack the face down Tsukuyomi,

putting Ryu Kokki face down. Then I set the Bottomless and end.

He draws and sets one monster to accompany the Treeborn still on the field and ends with one card in his hand.

I draw Sakuretsu and flip summon the Ryu Kokki and attack his face down faith, giving him Book of Moon. And I set the

Sakuretsu, since the Heavy is gone. Snatch is the only thing in my hand.

He draws and sacrifices the Treeborn for Mobius taking out my Bottomless and Sakuretsu, but I activate Bottomless on his

Mobius. He plays Book of Moon on Mobius to save it from the Bottomless. Then he sets one S/T and ends with nothing in

his hand.

I draw Merchant and attack his face down Mobius with my Ryu Kokki, which he allows.  I set the Merchant and end.

He draws and activates his set S/T, Call of the Haunted, on his Mobius and suicides with Ryu Kokki and sets one monster

and ends.

I draw a MST and flip summon my Merchant, which immediately gets me a Mirror Force. I set the Mirror Force along with

MST and end with only the Snatch in my hand.

He draws and special summons the Treeborn in defense and flips his own Merchant immediately getting him a Brain Control.

He attacks with his merchant into mine, and I allow it. Then he sets one S/T, probably that Brain control, which doesn't

deserve the MST at end phase.

I draw Graceful and play it getting Crossout, Pyramid Turtle, and V. Lord. And I dump the V. Lord and Crossout. Then I

summon the Pyramid Turtle and attack with it to his Treeborn, and he activates his face down S/T, Mirror Force. I guess I

was wrong about that Brain Control. It must still be in his hand. I end my turn.

He draws and ends his turn with only Treeborn on his side and two cards in his hand.

I draw a Reaper and set it, no reason to attack the Treeborn, which is something I notice lots of people doing. They'll attack a

Treeborn when their opponent don't have any S/T's. Treeborn will just come back; it's best not to leave your monsters in attack

mode. Besides, that Brain Control would take out the Reaper next turn. I would be a waste. I end.

He draws and sets one S/T. I check his graveyard for anything potentially dangerous and decide not to activate MST on it

during his end phase.

I draw Sangan and decide to try to take out the Brain Control one way or another. I activate my set MST on his set S/T a

Sakuretsu. Then I summon Sangan and then I flip summon the Reaper which elicits him sucking his teeth and grunting (not to

mention the nasty look he gives me). Sangan takes out Treeborn and the Reaper does 300, second damage all game, and it hits

a Return (he's at 7400). Then I end my turn. Reaper is dead next turn, but I have Sangan and a Mirror Force on field and a

Snatch in hand.

He draws and special summons the Treeborn in defense and activates Brain Control on my Reaper by paying 800 to destroy

it (he's at 6600). Then he ends his turn.

I draw and set a Faith and put Sangan in defense. Then I end my turn.

He draws and he sacrifices his Treeborn for a Cyber Dragon and attacks my face down Faith, which I allow, and get a Graceful

with her effect. I often like to let my opponent's attacks go through when I have a set Mirror Force. It puts them at ease to think

the set S/T that's been there all game is of no use to me, so, they feel comfortable summoning and attacking. He ends his turn

with one card in hand.

I draw a Pyramid Turtle and play Graceful and get Book of Life, Regenerating, and Swords. I dump the Swords and the

Pyramid Turtle. Then I summon the Regenerating and play Book of Life on Ryu Kokki removing his Treeborn Frog and play

Snatch on his Cyber Dragon and put Sangan into attack mode. I attack his clear field with everything for game. When we finish,

he has a look of astonishment, which makes me cautious as to how to react. "Good Game" sufficed.

My last opponent was Nanny Fan. We've been good friends for some time. I didn't get a chance to ask him what he was

running earlier, so I asked him before our match began. He told me he was running a Gravekeeper Deck. I said "Surely you

must be joking." I was worried; in the past, my Zombies have suffered crushing defeats at the hands of the Gravekeepers.

He responded that he never jokes and not to call him Shirley. The duel began. Needless to say, this will be a difficult last match.

Match #4

Duel #1

He wins the role and goes first. He draws and sets one monster and one S/T and ends.

I draw and have a monster heavy hand; Reaper, Merchant, Cyber Dragon, Regenerating, Pyramid Turtle, and DD Assailant.

I special summon the Cyber Dragon and attack. He activates his S/T, Sakuretsu, on it. Then I set the Pyramid Turtle and end.

He draws and flip summons a Night Assailant destroying my Pyramid Turtle. He sacrifices it for Cyber Dragon and attacks me

for 2100 and he ends his turn (I'm at 5900).

I draw another Reaper and set it and end my turn.

He draws and attack my Reaper with Cyber Dragon and then plays Smashing afterwards. Then sets one monster and ends.

I draw Pyramid Turtle and set it and end my turn.

He draws and activates Terraforming to get Necrovalley from his deck. Then he flip summons Faith to get back Smashing

and then activates the Necrovalley and attacks with Cyber Dragon into my Pyramid Turtle. Thanks to card errata, I get the

Pyramid Turtle's effect even with Necrovalley active. I choose a Ryu Kokki from my deck. Then he plays Smashing on it.

And ends.

I draw a Faith, and summon the D.D. Assailant and attack the Cyber Dragon doing 400 to myself, but removing both monsters

(5500). Then I end my turn with all monsters in hand; a Reaper, Merchant, Regenerating, and Faith.

He draws and puts Faith into defense and ends.

I draw a Sakuretsu, which I set along with a Merchant, but he activates his face down S/T, MST, on it during my end phase.

He draws an ends his turn. I guess he's not drawing his attackers.

I draw Confiscation, and opt to flip the Merchant first, which dumps a Treeborn before giving me a Book of Life. Both being

extremely useful at this very moment. I summon Regenerating to attack his Faith and then I attack for 200 with Merchant

directly (he's at 7800). Then I play Confiscation on him, paying 1000 to see his hand of Premature, Mirror Force, Swords,

and Call of the Haunted (I'm at 4500). I comment on how nice that hand is, and after memorizing it, pick the Mirror Force.

He won't be using Premature or Call of the Haunted anytime soon with Necrovalley active. I have a useless Book of Life and

Faith in hand for the same reason along with a Reaper. I end.

He draws and sets one monster and ends.

I draw Snatch and choose not to get back Treeborn frog, even though I can through Necrovalley. After setting the Reaper,

I'll have enough defense. Often Treeborn also clogs up my field. I'll get him when I need him. I attack his set monster with

Regenerating, to discover a Reaper. I then activate Snatch on it and put Merchant into defense and set a Reaper of my own.

Then I end.

He draws and sets one monster and ends.

I draw Dust, taking a moment to wonder what in the world I would want to activate Dust on. Then I flip Reaper into attack

mode and hoping to take something from his hand attack with Regenerating to his face down to reveal a Gravekeeper's Spy

(G. Spy) with 2500 defense due to Necrovalley, doing 700 damage to me and he searches out a Gravekeeper's Spear Soldier

(G. Spear) in attack mode with 2000 piercing damage (I'm at 3800). I set the Faith and the Dust before ending. Yes, I'm over

committing to the field, but that Necrovalley is no joke.

He draws, and then attacks my Regenerating with his G. Spear, which I allow (again, false sense of security), doing 200 to

me (I'm at 3600). He's weary of putting the Spy in attack mode because of a potential Mirror Force (If he had put it into

attack mode, I would have activated Dust). Then he ends with four cards in hand and a Necrovalley and G. Spy and G. Spear

on the field.

I draw a V. Lord and find a decent situation for myself. First and foremost I activate Dust on the Necrovalley allowing me to

play Book of Life to special summon my Ryu Kokki and removing his Night Assailant. Then I sacrifice my Merchant for

V. Lord and the flip the Faith to get back Book of Life and reactivate it to get back my Reaper in attack mode and removing

his Faith from play. My field now contains two Reapers, a Faith, V. Lord, and Ryu Kokki all in attack mode. If I had

special summoned the Treeborn earlier it would have taken up space. I attack with Ryu Kokki to his G. Spy and V. Lord

to his G. Spear, doing 500 to him and taking a spell from his deck, a Royal Tribute (he's at 7300). Then I attack with the

Faith and the two Reapers (in that order) for 900 damage and taking two cards from his hand, a Torrential and a

Call of the Haunted, which means that Swords and Premature are still in hand, because Confiscation let me memorize his

hand (he's at 6400). With nothing in my hand, and full field control I end my turn.

He draws and activates Swords and pays 800 for Premature on his G. Spy and summons Tsukuyomi putting the G. Spy

face down (he's at 5600). I applaud his tactic to rebuild his field. Then he attacks my Faith with Tsukuyomi doing 800 to

me (I'm at 2800). Then he ends his turn.

I top deck a miracle Heavy and play it, destroying his Swords. Then I attack with Ryu Kokki to his face down G. Spy,

which fetches another one in defense. Temporarily stopping my assault. I put the two Reapers into defense. Then I ends my turn.

He draws and sets one S/T and summons Tsukuyomi to put his G. Spy face down. Then he ends.

I draw Call of the Haunted and put one Reaper in attack mode and attack with Ryu Kokki with no Mirror Force to worry

about. First Ryu Kokki attacks and he activates his set S/T, Sakuretsu, on it. Then I set the Call of the Haunted and end

my turn.

He draws and summons the Tsukuyomi and puts my V. Lord down and attacks through my attack position Reaper for 800

and then ends (I'm at 2000).

I draw a Goldd and sacrifice the defense position Reaper for it and flip summon V. Lord and attack with Goldd to his face

down G. Spy, which fetches a Gravekeeper's Cannonholder in defense, which V. Lord takes out, then Reaper attacks

doing 300 and taking a Gravekeeper's Assailant (G. Assailant) out of his hand (he's at 5300). And then I activate

Call of the Haunted on Ryu Kokki and take 2400 out of his life points (he's at 2900). He has a Tsukuyomi in his hand

and I have nothing in mine. I end.

He draws and activates Heavy destroying my Ryu Kokki with Call of the Haunted on it and sets one monster, obviously the

Tsukuyomi that can finally rest in the graveyard. Then he ends.

I draw Premature and pay 800 to activate it on Ryu Kokki and attack with Ryu Kokki to his face down monster, Tsukuyomi,

and he puts Goldd face down and V. Lord and Reaper take out 2300 along with a spell from his deck, a Crossout

(he's at 600, I'm at 1200). Then I end.

Staring down the barrel he predicts his next card. "Call it what you will: a sixth sense, gut feeling, woman's intuition." He draws

and says, "just when I don't need it," showing me Necrovalley. He scoops.

Duel #2

He decides to go first and draws and sets one monster and one S/T and ends.

I draw and have Bottomless, Graceful, V. Lord, Swords, MST, and Regenerating. I summon the Regenerating and attack his

face down, to reveal a G. Spy with 2000 defense, doing 200 to me and he gets the flip effect to special summon another G. Spy

in defense position (I'm at 7800). Then I set the Bottomless and end my turn. I often like to hold the Graceful for when I need it.

In the last game he didn't play Confiscation, or Don Zaloog, and none of his Reapers got an attack through, so it's probably safe

in my hand.

He draws and sets one S/T and ends.

I draw a Morphing jar, which isn't really needed right now, but I decide the Graceful is. I'll need more power to get past those

G. Spies. I play the Graceful and get Book of Life, Faith, and Mobius. I dump the Morphing Jar and the V. Lord. Then I

sacrifice the Regenerating for Mobius to destroy his two set S/T's and he plays Book of Moon on it and chains a Dust on my

Bottomless. Then I activate the Swords and end.

He draws and plays Crossout on my Mobius. Then ends his turn with only the Spies protecting him. The first turn of Swords

is over.

I draw a Sangan and set the Faith and end.

He draws and sets one S/T and ends his turn. The second turn on Swords is over.

I draw a Breaker and flip summon the Faith to get back Graceful. I play it and get Pyramid Turtle, Bottomless, and another

Mobius. I dump the Sangan and Pyramid Turtle. And sacrifice the Faith for Mobius to destroy his set S/T, a Bottomless,

which he activates on Mobius. He joins the other Mobius in the Different Dimension. Those Spies have been there since the

second turn. It's just aggravating, but I have to end my turn with nothing but Swords protecting me.

He draws and ends his turn. The third turn on Swords is over and it is destroyed.

I draw a Crossout, and ask why it didn't show up first turn. I set the MST and the Bottomless and end my turn.

He draws and summons Breaker, which activates my Bottomless. He ends his turn.

I draw a Torrential, which I set accompanying the MST and I end my turn.

He draws and summons Reaper, which activates my Torrential, finally getting rid of those G. Spies. He sets two S/T's before

ending his turn.

I draw Sakuretsu and summon the Breaker, who uses his token on one of the S/T's, a Rite of Spirit, which he activates getting

one of the G. Spies in defense, too much defense for my Breaker. Then I end my turn.

He draws and activates Snatch on my Breaker, which MST gets rid of. Then he ends his turn with the G. Spy on field and a

S/T down.

I draw a Rush Recklessly, and attack with Breaker to his G. Spy and he doesn't activate anything in response. I play Rush

Recklessly from my hand during the damage step temporarily making Breaker a 2300 attacker, enough to kill the G. Spy.

Then I set the Sakuretsu and end my turn.

He draws and sets one monster and ends his turn.

I draw a Mirror Force and knowing the Book of Life in my hand won't be worth anything after Necrovalley I use it to remove

one of his G. Spies to special summon my V. Lord, but he activates his S/T, another Rite of Spirit to special summon the G. Spy

I was removing in defense, making my Book of Life's effect disappear. Then I play Crossout on his face down, a G. Assailant.

Then I end my turn, and he only has a G. Spy on his field with three cards in his hand. I have a Breaker on my side with

Sakuretsu backing him up and a Mirror Force in my hand.

He draws he summons a G. Spear and plays Smashing destroying Breaker, and attacks with the G. Spear. I activate

Sakuretsu on it. He ends.

I draw a Premature to accompany the Mirror Force in my hand. I have a clear field, so I set the Mirror Force and end my turn

with nothing big enough in my graveyard to take out that G. Spy.

He draws and sets one monster and ends his turn.

I draw Ryu Kokki and pay 800 to premature the Sangan and sacrifice it for Ryu Kokki and get Treeborn with Sangan's effect

(I'm at 7000). Then Ryu Kokki attacks the G. Spy, which he allows. Then I end my turn.

He draws and flip summons Faith getting back Smashing. I do an anime fall as he activates it on my Ryu Kokki. I found it

amusing that such a small monster could take out such a behemoth. Then he summons his own Sangan and attacks with both for

1300, which I take (I'm at 5700). Then he ends his turn.

I draw a Goldd and set the Treeborn and end.

He draws and plays Crossout on my Treeborn. He puts Faith in defense and attacks with Sangan for 1000 and I take it

(I'm at 4700). And then he ends.

I draw Call of the Haunted, which I set before ending my turn.

He draws and attacks again with Sangan which activates my Call of the Haunted on V. Lord, just in case he has that Smashing.

And then he puts Sangan into defense and ends.

I draw Heavy, just when I need it for a clear field. V. Lord attacks the Faith and then I end.

He draws and activates Heavy destroying my Call of the Haunted along with V. Lord and the Mirror Force. Then he puts

Sangan in attack mode and takes another 1000 out of me (I'm at 3700). Then he ends.

I draw V. lord and set the Heavy as a bluff. I have a V. lord and Goldd in my hand. I end.

He draws and summons G. Spear and activates Necrovalley and attacks with 3000 total before ending (I'm at 700).

I draw a Dust. Then activate my set Heavy to destroy the Necrovalley, and then set the Dust as a bluff before ending.

He draws and activates another Necrovalley and attacks for game after Dust takes out the field magic card.

Duel #3

This was it. I lost last, so I decided to go first. We wish each other luck before beginning. I draw and have Call of the Haunted,

Book of Life, Breaker, Pyramid Turtle, Crossout, and Cyber Dragon. I set the Pyramid Turtle and end my turn.

He draws and summons G. Spear and activates Necrovalley making his G. Spear a 2000 piercing attacker and attacks my

Pyramid Turtle with it, which does 600 to me (I'm at 7400). I search to get Ryu Kokki. Then he activates Smashing before

ending his turn.

I draw a Merchant and special summon the Cyber Dragon and then normal summon Breaker, which uses his counter to take out

Necrovalley. I could have kept the counter for the 300 more attack, but this setup will allow for 200 more damage since

G. Spear now has 500 less attack. Breaker and Cyber Dragon attack to do 2200 to him (he's at 5800). Then I set the

Call of the Haunted before ending.

He draws and activates Heavy on my set Call of the Haunted. Then activates Swords and sets two S/T's, using his entire hand.

He must be desperate.

I draw MST and activate it on his Swords. Then attack with Cyber and Breaker, and he activate Rite of Spirit to special

summon his G. Spear in defense after Breaker attacks and Cyber Dragon takes it out, so only 1600 was done this turn

(he's at 4200). Usually I attack with my largest monster first just in case such incidents occur. A mistake we both comment on.

We usually practice with each other, so mistakes are usually noted in order that we may perfect our technique

(like summoning before playing Crossout to avoid Torrential). Then I set the Merchant before ending.

He draws and special summons a Cyber Dragon to attack the Breaker doing 500 to me (I'm at 6900). Then he ends his turn

with only the Cyber Dragon and a set S/T on the field.

I draw a Sangan and then flip summon my Merchant, which immediately gets me a Sakuretsu. Then I activate Book of Life

to remove his G. Spear to special summon my Ryu Kokki, but he activates Bottomless on it. So I summon the Sangan and

suicide our Cyber Dragons and attack him directly for 1200 (he's at 3000). Then I end my turn.

He draws and summons Breaker, and attacks my Merchant doing 1700 to me (I'm at 5200). And then he ends.

I draw Book of Life and activate it removing his Cyber Dragon to special summon my Pyramid Turtle in attack mode and I

attack his Breaker with it doing 700 to myself and I special summon a V. Lord and attack with it and Sangan to do 1100 and

taking a spell from his deck, a Royal Tribute, then I set the Sakuretsu just in case before ending my turn (he's at 1900,

I'm at 4500).

He draws and sets one monster and ends. I show him the Crossout in my hand and we say "Good game."

For winning I got 8 pack of the new set, Enemy of Justice. Nanny Fan got 4 packs and we helped each other open them.

I got two Super Rares; Clock Tower Prison and Electromagnetic Voltech Dragon. It was a good day of dueling and has given

me inspiration to change up my deck. Perhaps a Zombie Deck Out Deck... Feel free to e-mail me, Shaddymaze, at

ms457@georgetown.edu, and thanks for reading.
