Subject: The Duelist Kingdom Championships - Trinidad and Tobago

The Duelist Kingdom Championships Official Tournament Report

Location: The University of the West Indies Student Activity Centre, St. Augustine, Trinidad, West Indies.
Date Held: Sunday 9th October, 2005
Name: Ryan Joseph Rodriguez (Tournament Master) Deck (Used in the Special Tournament Master match): Toon Deck

To whom it may concern:
The following document is the tournament report of the Duelist Kingdom Championships, held in Trinidad on the 9th of October, sponsored by myself, the Tournament Master, and Anil Singh, an Upperdeck Tournament Organiser. The following was originally written on the GATT forums by me as a tournament report on the proceedings.

The Duelist Kingdom Championships have come to a close, and, I must say, it was a great success, with 36 duelists and more in attendance. As promised, here are the final results:

1st PLACE: Rio Charles (also the winner of the Tournament Master Round) 2nd PLACE: Chris Deolall

Special Challenge Winners:

CHALLENGE 1: BE THE FIRST TO WEAR DOWN YOUR OPPONENT'S LIFE POINTS BY 5000.
WINNER: Chris Deolall

CHALLENGE 2: DESTROY THE MOST MONSTERS IN BATTLE, IN A SINGLE BATTLE PHASE, OR BE THE FIRST TO ELIMINATE 5 MONSTERS AS A RESULT OF BATTLE, IN A SINGLE BATTLE PHASE .
WINNER: Gabriel Singh (4 monsters)

CHALLENGE 3: SCORE THE FASTEST MATCH VICTORY.
WINNER: Sean Alexander

CHALLENGE 4: REMOVE THE MONSTER WITH THE HIGHEST ATK FROM PLAY.
WINNER: Sean Alexander (Fusilier Dragon, 2800 ATK)

CHALLENGE 5: MOST IMPRESSIVE FINISH
WINNER: Kafele Greene

This tournament had a very impressive turnout, for the most part. I was taken aback by just how well my strategy of personally inviting people and spreading the word (my only two options since I was sort of barred from putting up posters and flyers) worked out....a lot of people heard about the tournament, and came out in the droves to test their might against the other duelists. And they came pretty early, too....about half of the expected quota (24 was the break-even point) was already there by 9, one hour shy of registration time at 10.

A few snags did hit me before the tournament began, though.
The first and main snag was that Subway, Mario's and KFC (24/7 my ASS) was CLOSED, leaving many of the duelists (and organisers, including myself) hungry throughout the tournament. Soft drinks were available, though (at an added expense on my behalf), because, while I was sort of tied in terms of food, a supermarket was open for me to fetch some drinks. The hunger would have an effect on the latter half of the tournament, though...but more on that later.

Well, the tournament began, with the room (which was made to accomodate 32 duelists) crowding over (we had 36 registered), so some more space was made for them (which looked kind of weird since we had to jut two tables out from Room #1 to keep an eye on them). And then, after a little delay in registering duelists and securing drinks, the tournament was under way.

One thing that really impressed me the most was just how flexible duelists were in acheiving the Special Challenges. One was issued in each of the 5 rounds they competed in (duelists had to try to win the most out of 5 to make it to the final 8 ). In almost no time at all, Chris lapped up the
first- "Wear down your opponent's LP by 5000 or more." He seemed pretty eager to knock out the other challenges, but they would become progressively more difficult as the tournament progressed.

The second round brought a new challenge....a monster massacre contest, if you will. After some discussion with Anil, he suggested that we should see how many monsters the duelists can take down in battle. Securing 5 was an automatic $50 made, but in case nobody accomplished that, the person who took down the most will win it. Gabriel Singh was the lucky duelist, who took down a whole field of Sheep Tokens to win the prize. Nobody else seemed to come close- the most the others knocked out were two.

The 3rd round tested just how well a duelist can manage his time- cause you know, after all, some duelists take an eternity and a half just to make a decision. So, I made the next challenge a speed contest, to see who could win their match first out of everybody. In almost no time at all, Sean Alexander pulled it off. And, given the length of time the others took in the remainders of the tournament, it was remarkably quick. I was very impressed.

The fourth was truly a test, but hey, it wouldn't be a challenge if there wasn't some difficulty behind it, after all.
Using probably -the- worst Crocodile Hunter introduction in the history of mankind (this is what you get for bringing up a dude who dangled his kid in front of a gator ), I issued the challenge - bag the biggest monster by removing it from play. It was a toss up, really.....Bouya managed to remove a Dark Ruler Ha Des, a 2450 behemoth. We thought that would be tough to beat, until Joseph Bagot nailed a Behemoth-King of all Animals with a Bottomless Trap Hole for 2700. A prime specimen, that was. Pretty tasty, too.

...err, where was I? Oh yes.
Well, we thought that was the catch of the day, until Sean Alexander used Book of Life to take down a Fusilier Dragon for 2800. He won, and was declared the biggest game hunter of the tournament.
Crikey.

The 5th round was failry obvious to anybody who's been in this game.
You have your ups, you have your downs, but sometimes, in this game, you will run into times where you will either rule your opponent with an iron fist or be thoroughly annihilated in the worst way possible. The duelists had to come up with the most impressive finish, which was really a contest to see who could impress SPK and myself with their victory. Christopher Manbodh used Cyber Twin Dragon and Sacred Phoenix to take the lead, but Green took it a notch higher with a foursome of monsters which included Injection Fairy Lily, Skilled Dark Magician, Slate Warrior and Jinzo. Nice.

PRELIMINARIES

Finally, after much anticipation, the prelims were underway, with the likes of Chaos Legion, Chris and Bouya joining the fray. We kept a close eye on the matches.....which, quite frankly, moved as quickly as black strap molasses, and seemed somewhat longer since most of us didn't have something to eat for the day. Rio's Spirit Reapers really guarded him a lot in his match against Sean...who caused a lot of us to praise the Lord when he finally used Dark Hole to remove the persistent Reapers. But, not to be outdone, Rio managed to bring Ryu Kokki and Jinzo to the field. Exiled Force and Raigeki Break were there, but Sean tried a different strategy instead, Unfortunately, it didn't prevail, and Rio moved on to the Semis. Also joining him were Akil Jones (who defeated Andrew), Chris Deolall and Anderson Lawrence (Bouya).

SEMI-FINALS

I don't know about you, but my feet turned to Jell-o in this round. And not just the Green Lima Bean flavored kind. So I sat down and judged from there.

The duels moved probably even slower than the prelims....much to the sheer annoyance of the other duelists, who really wanted things to move quicker (it was nearing 6). A match that really had people talking was the one between Akil and Chris....the two came down to a topdeck....with Trap after Trap after Trap being drawn. Then, finally, a monster...a Night Assailant. Everybody roared with laughter at how desperate the situation got- until Chris topped that move with a Kuriboh, and really had the people in stitches. In the end, Chris won his match.
Bouya, however, was not as lucky.....time elapsed a lot during the match, and it came down to sudden death. Rio used Ryu Kokki to beat Bouya's Vampire Lord to draw first blood and win the match.

FINALS

In the end, it was Chris vs. Rio.
I was taken aback by this one....those Reapers just devastated Chris' hand in the vital round, and cards like Raigeki Break prevented him from defending himself. In the end, Rio won the tournament, but still had one more opponent to face....

THE TOURNAMENT MASTER ROUND

Me.
Rio got the upper hand on me throughout....Vampire Lord got the better of Toon Gemini Elf and robbed me of several Trap cards, and, even though I used his own Ryu Kokki to kill his monster and fired it off with Toon Cannon Soldier, his Penguin Soldier did it in for me by returning my Cyber Jar to my hand....the one card that would've turned the game around. So, in addition to winning $500, he won $100 more and a Gilford the Lightning Collector's Tin. And then, after all that hubbub, the tournament was over.

So, that's it.
No pictures as of yet, though....my camera is currently charging.
In the meantime, some good points and bad about the tourney:

GOOD:

+ Impressive turnout
+ No bad incidents
+ Impressive performance by the duelists The winners went home happy....

BAD:

- No food places were open
- Some duelists did not show up
- Unforseen delays in between rounds
- The cleanup.

Well, needless to say, this tournament was a huge success, and, as promised, another tournament is in the works, which will have a lot more on the line. However, it will be scheduled next year, a week or two after the April Banned List comes out. Keep on the lookout for updates and details on the next Duelist Kingdom event: Duelist Kingdom Championships 2: Day of Reckoning.

In the meantime, I wish to extend my thanks to all of those who contributed towards this tournament, and made it a success. See you next time, folks!

Chairman,
