RegnR8's Return to the Throne and a rant or two
Tournament Report for April 30, 2005

Hi all,

Welcome to this week's terribly exciting tournament report. Well, it's probably not even mildly titilating but, on with the report anyway!

I made a few slight deck changes again this week. Nothing major, just a couple of little tweaks to see how it goes. I missed the last Regional Event here in Georgia, and there are two more Regionals in May, so I want to be sure the deck is the best it can be. I will probably try out a few other things before then. Oh, I forgot to give props to RayC who suggested the addition of Spirit Reaper and MoF. So, thanks RayC, they're working out pretty good. Yes, I am still main decking the Skull Servant since, it's a laugh. Also, we're Team Skull Servant so, it makes a lot of sense. Every deck should run at least one. LoL.

There were two tournaments today and I changed the deck in between tournaments so, I am only going to list the second version of the deck.

x3 Nimble Momonga
x3 Berserk Gorilla
x2 Mobius the Frost Monarch
x2 Zaborg the Thunder Monarch
x1 Tribe Infecting Virus
x1 Sinister Serpent
x1 Breaker the Magical Warrior
x1 Sangan
x1 Magician of Faith
x1 Skull Servant
x2 Spirit Reaper

x2 Scapegoat
x2 Metamorphosis
x2 Creature Swap
x1 Delinquent Duo
x1 Nobleman of Crossout
x1 Pot of Greed
x1 Graceful Charity
x1 Lightning Vortex
x1 Snatch Steal
x1 Swords of Revealing Light
x1 Heavy Storm
x1 Mystical Space Typhoon
x1 Premature Burial

x3 Bottomless Trap Hole
x1 Ceasefire
x1 Ring of Destruction
x1 Call of the Haunted
x1 Royal Decree

SIDE DECK:

x1 Mobius the Frost Monarch
x3 King Tiger Wanghu
x1 Jinzo
x1 Magician of Faith
x3 Royal Oppression
x1 Nobelman of Crossout
x1 Torrential Tribute
x1 Scapegoat
x1 Metamorphosis
x2 Smashing Ground

ROUND 1
MONARCHS VS CHAOS/BEATDOWN

Yawn. Another Chaos deck. I'm getting tired of dueling the same deck again and again...

GAME 1
This game goes back and forth a while until my Royal Decree shuts his traps down and I am free to do what I will. TER stalls and attacks, and when I tribute it for Zaborg to destroy his set Cyber Jar, that clears the way for a Nimble to put the final nail in the coffin! GO NIMBLE!

GAME 2
He put up a good fight, but I managed to get rid of all his monsters. First, I NOC his Cyber Jar, Bottomless his Blade Knight, then Vortex takes out his DD Warrior Lady and Zaborg destroys his Reflect Bounder. I summon a Magician of Faith and kill him with her. Haha!

ROUND 2
MONARCHS VS SOME WIERD, NOOB BEATDOWN/BUSTER BLADER THING

GAMES 1 AND 2
Oh man. Got to give the kid props for trying......

ROUND 3
MONARCHS VS HIGHLY COPIED PHOENIX/ZOMBIE DECK

Hmmm. I have seen about three versions of this deck and they are all pretty much the same. It's the up and coming hybrid Phoenix/Zombie deck. If you haven't seen one yet, they're basically designed around the Phoenix (of course) and Vampire Lord. Oh yes, BLS is usually splashed in as well. This one side decks into Last Turn. Interesting.

GAME 1
He kicks my butt in a major way.....I forget to do Sangan's effect and that may have cost me.

GAME 2
I side deck all the Royal Oppression and Tigers and Smashing Ground and my other NoC. Actually, I get lucky and Delinquent Duo, followed by a MoF flip and a second activation of Duo destroys his hand and I win this game fairly easily. Why did Konami unban Delinquent Duo? That is so broken....

GAME 3
I keep my deck the same. I get a Royal Oppression on the first turn. I also draw Delinqent Duo again. The Royal Oppression really hurt him and the Tigers stop him from summoning so he just kept setting monsters. He pays 3000 for Wall of Revealing Light and then I Ring Zaborg in his draw phase for the win.

SEMI-FINALS

MONARCHS VS Hmm not sure what to call it now....Chaos Beatdown Metamorphosis without BLS? What is this thing now?

Man, it's Takashi again. We're always facing each other. But, it's all good.

GAME 1
I get owned by an Airknight! All I have in my hand is Spirit Reaper, MoF with nothing to get out of the graveyard, and Sinister Serpent. Haha.

GAME 2
This is a really amazing duel. I didn't side deck any because I felt I just got a bad opening hand and the deck could win as is. It may have hurt me in the long run, but maybe not. I'll never know. To make a long story short, we pretty much stalemated all the way until I DECKED OUT! OH man! Takashi had ONE card left and I decked out the turn before he would have! I was sort of mad at that because it's a STUPID way to lose unless your opponent is trying to deck you out.....Oh well.

Well, once again, I made it to the Semi-finals so, that's cool. But, the really dumb thing is, I had one loss and get nothing. The person who came in second this week, I beat in the first round AND he lost again in the second round but managed to take second place? He lost three out of four matchs yet, comes in second. That's retarded.

Well, we moved on to the second tournament of the day and there was some lively discussion about people copying other people's decks. Seems like several folks have been really examining some other folks decks and "borrowing" the core tactics and cards. This seems to upset some other players. This is very understandable, because I have been a victim of deck stealing before. I have utilized good ideas and solid strategy from other players many times but, I have NEVER net decked or outright used anyone else's deck. I am a BIG advocate for originality and it is somewhat disappointing to see so many decks have been copied that really are not that stable nor consistant anyway. It's really disheartening to hear people claim how great their deck is (which they have unabashedly copied from the net or someone else), only to have it thrashed in the tournament. People claim they "play with what wins" but I haven't seen any deck yet that someone has copied from the net, that was totally 100% foolproof or dominant.

So onto the first round.

ROUND 1
MONARCHS VS ZOMBIE

GAME 1
Yawn. His Spirit Reapers stall like mad and absolutely just sit there and do nothing. I just let him keep setting monsters and I do as well. I wack him with 3000LP activating Ceasefire and when I finally get rid of his Reapers I can dominate.

GAME 2
I side deck in all my Royal Oppression and Tigers and they do the trick. He has to set everything again and I negate everything with the Royal Oppression and he can't get his deck started at all. Boom....

ROUND 2
MONARCHS VS SOUL CONTROL

GAMES 1 and 2
Heres a deck that "borrows" from the Internet.....It hasn't beaten me yet....but it's based on one of the SJC 8th place finisher decks that's ALL the rage now...ooohhhhh.....ahhhhh......

Both games I was getting trashed pretty good, but a Nimble gave me some field advantage and LP gain. Zaborg and Mobius begin to do their work and I come from behindeach game. Funny thing was, we both got our Delinquent Duos real early in BOTH games so, we were both at a disadvantage..He Soul Exchanged and tributed for Thestalos only one time during the match. Yeah, Soul Control is great.

ROUND 3
MONARCHS VS BEATDOWN

This is me VS me actually. I built this guys deck from cards he had. He wanted a Beatdown deck so, I put it together for him. He has some decent cards so, the deck is pretty good. I've built a gazillion beatdowns so, it's pretty straightforward. I had the advantage because I knew what was in his deck. It made it to the third round, so, that's good.

GAME 1

Bottomless and Ring take out his first two monsters. He Exiled my Reaper but I manage to Morph MoF into TER and take his Breaker. I Ceasefire his Cyber Jar, and when he uses Book of Moon on it, I NoC it! Ha. After that, I dominate. GG....

GAME 2

He attacks my Nimble and I have tribute fodder for Mobius and Zaborg and then I totally OWN him. GG again. Go home...

SEMI-FINALS

MONARCHS VS ANOTHER HIGHLY COPIED PHOENIX/ZOMBIE DECK

GAMES 1 and 2

Both games I get really crappy hands. I do manage to Bottomless his Vampire Lord once but, he got all his counter cards and everything I did, he had an answer for. I got killed by the Beatdown portion of the deck. Phoenix never was summoned and V Lord wasn't a factor. Oh well.

I come in third this week and get a couple of packs so, that's cool. I don't even remember what I pulled, it was that Craptacular!

Well, if you are still reading this, then I'm going to go off on a little rant now about how this game is screwed up and is getting a little dull and repititious. I've been playing this game for, I guess a little over two years now, and it's getting pretty bland. I have to give Konami props for trying, but they're not trying enough. The ban lists have been nigh on ridiculous and there really needs to be some sweeping changes to the list and the RULES! Let's look at these a little closer.

The Ban List

Having played with the new ban list for about a month, I must say it has done NOTHING to freshen the game. If anything, it has thrown it backwards and increased the dull factor about a hundredfold. What were they thinking when they brought back Delinquent Duo and Mirror Force? Why, oh why, didn't they ban BLS, the most Broken Monster since Yata Garasu? Why didn't they ban Pot of Greed when they brought back Graceful Charity? Why don't we get rid of the monsters everyone uses like Tribe and Breaker? It's ridiculous. In addition to the current ban and restricted list, let's consider adding the following.

BAN
Heavy Storm
Pot of Greed
Mirror Force
Delinquent Duo
Snatch Steal
Lightning Vortex
Ring of Destruction
Breaker the Magical Warrior
Tribe Infecting Virus
Call of the Haunted
Premature Burial
Black Luster Soldier EotB

LIMIT to TWO per deck
Scapegoat
Metamorphosis
Book of Moon
Enemy Controller
Giant Trunade
Mystical Space Typhoon
Smashing Ground
Sakeretsu Armor

Before you freak out, think about this. Never again will your S/T zone be wiped out by Heavy Storm only to have your opponent chain their set Call of the Haunted to Jinzo, Premature Burial something else and summon a third monster and KILL you.

Everybody screams, Breaker and Tribe are balanced. I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm saying let's free up a couple of monster slots in our decks to concentrate on origionality. EVERYBODY uses Breaker and TiV in a deck, no matter WHAT deck type it is.

Killing Heavy Storm and bringing back MST to two should placate the Haters. Limiting Giant Trunade to two would also silence the babies who say, "Then everyone will just use three Giant Trunade". I still see a lot of Dust Tornado anyway.

The Scapegoat/Metamorphosis trick is almost an epidemic in my meta. I don't know about where you play, but it's nearly a staple where I am these days. It's just too good and easy.

I'm sure if I thought about it a little more, there may be more cards to add, since banning some would open the way for others. It's all supposition anyway. Everyone thought Zombie decks would shoot to the Top Tier after the ban list and that didn't happen. Everyone thought Warrior/Chaos would die with the restriction of DD Warrior Lady but, that didn't happen. MoF just slid in there. For every card that's banned, there is sure to be a weaker replacement.

There MUST be a solution that injects creativity, strategy and FUN back into dueling. Currently, Yugioh is still only a race to see who pulls the best cards first.

Ok, enough of that.

RULINGS

My GOSH, Yugioh has the most convoluted, non-sensical, illogical rulings I have ever seen!! It seems NO ONE really knows the answers to some questions!!! I will get a ruling from a "judge", only to look it up online to find out he was WRONG!! Try to make sense of Sacred Phoenix of Nephthys VS Divine Wrath. How can you Divine Wrath a Card while it's in the graveyard? Following that same logic, you should be able to Divine Wrath Sinister Serpent. How about this one? Sacred Phoenix of Nephthys VS Horn of Heaven. Even though Horn of Heaven NEGATES the summon (the Phoenix wasn't even summoned at all) it's DESTROYED by Horn of Heaven's effect, so it gets special summoned the next standby phase!!!! That makes NO SENSE AT ALL!!!!!!!!!!

The Chaining and Priority rulings should NOT be so difficult that no one can understand them half the time! How about trying to explain some of this to a twelve year old or someone who is just starting to learn how to play!

Book of Moon VS TER. That makes NO sense! If I have priority to take a monster, how can that priority be interrupted by Book of Moon and the monster return to my opponent. Really, that logically does not work, but becasue of "priority" and "resolution" of effects, it "supposedly" works that way. At least that's what I've been told. It could be WRONG! I don't have all day to look up every ruling on every card and every situation.

Back to the Phoenix one last time. This one still LOGICALLY doesn't make sense. Phoenix VS Injection Fairy Lily. LOGICALLY, since Injection's EFFECT is boosting her attack, the Phoenix SHOULD be able to come back in the standby phase but it doesn't, because it's been destroyed as a result of battle but, it was Injection's EFFECT that killed it! Argh.....

Things like common sense and logic fly out the window when it comes to some rulings.

Ok well, I'm sweating now....No, just kidding. Anyway, that's enough for now...

Until next time, happy dueling!
