Hello Pojo readers, it’s been a long time. About the time
Magician’s Force came out I took a long hiatus from dueling
and buying cards. I recently purchased the Power of Chaos:
Yugi computer game, and then The Dawn of Destiny on Xbox,
and I was hooked all over again. I had always meant to
compete with a Fire Princess deck. In Dawn of Destiny I made
a killer one that wins 99% of the time, so I decided to try
it out in reality. I had to modify it a lot to take the ban
list into consideration. Also, keep in mind I haven’t bought
any cards in over a year, so I’m using older ones. I did get
an IOC pack and used 2 cards from there. Also keep in mind
that this deck quakes in fear of Jinzo, and so I had to load
a few counter cards to keep him off the field. Surprised I
didn’t include a Double Snare. I wanted to deck a Dark Core
but just didn’t have the space.
Deck total: 45 +4 fusions
Normal Monsters (2)
2x Aqua Madoor
Effect Monsters (19)
2x Fire Princess
Mother Grizzly (this was to help get Serpent into my hand
faster)
Cyber Jar
Man-Eater Bug
Spirit Reaper
Mystic Tomato (for Sangan and Reaper)
Exiled Force
2x Penguin Soldier
Cannon Soldier
Sangan
Sinister Serpent (1001 uses)
Marie the Fallen One
Mask of Darkness
2x Magician of Faith
Magical Marionette (A bit out of place, but thought it’d
make a nice wall and that spell counter effect could kill
Jinzos. Used it for just that today.)
Balloon Lizard (never got to use its effect, but people
panicked and used cards to destroy it as soon as they could)
Spell (14)
My Body As A Shield (this stops Cyber Jars and Torrentials
cold)
The Shallow Grave
2x Heart of Clear Water (adds nice Spirit Reaper effect, and
won a duel for me)
Mystical Space Typhoon
Graceful Charity
Pot of Greed
2x Messenger of Peace
Ekibyo Drakmord (Lord I apologize…this was originally my
Japanese Premature Burial, and I was told I couldn’t use it,
so I subbed this in)
Fissure
Chorus of Sanctuary (Ehh…this was more useful in the video
game. I liked the idea of an Aqua Madoor with 2500 DEF.)
Metamorphosis
Salvage (lets me reuse Penguins, Grizzly, and Madoors--handy
with Graceful Charity or those doomed face-up ATK mode
special summons)
Trap (10)
2x Gravity Bind
2x Solemn Wishes
Solemn Judgment
2x Magic Jammer
Mirror Force
Call of the Haunted
Ring of Destruction
Fusions (4) --packed these for special occasions
2x Thousand-Eyes Restrict (Use Metamorphosis with Magician
of Faith or Serpent--helped me a LOT today)
Reaper on the Nightmare (with Marie the Fallen One or
Magical Marionette) Never used today.
Dark Balter The Terrible (same) Not used either.
Side Deck: Well, I only ever decked in a Nobleman of
Crossout and 7 Tools, then didn’t draw either. No help.
I got here late today and almost got a free BYE, but with 16
minutes left in the round they put me against a round 1
survivor and told us to settle it fast. A few people
recognized me from my last tournament appearance over a year
ago. Nice to be recognized.
First Match: Me vs. kid with beat down deck
Duel #1: I was off to a great start with defending cards and
Pot of Greed. Somebody behind me saw my Jap version of
Premature Burial and told me that was forbidden. Wow, they
went all official now. Since it was the first turn of the
game, I side decked in Ekibyo Drakmord, reshuffled, and
started over.
Well, all this kid’s monsters were level 4 and up and he was
strangely lacking in traps or removal, so he was no threat.
I eventually got up the trifecta of Fire Princess, Gravity
Bind, and Marie the Fallen one. Never did draw my Solemn
Wishes. He did pull out a Mystical Space Typhoon, but my
Magic Jammer with Serpent laughed at that. As Marie’s
point-gaining choked him down, I drew Cannon Soldier. Using
a favorite trick from my Xbox game, I began repeatedly
summoning Serpent and firing off with Cannon Soldier to
speed it up. Ka-pow, he’s out.
Duel #2: Same thing. Fire Princess, Solemn Wishes, Gravity
Bind. Th-th-that’s all folks. I managed to pull out Thousand
Eyes Restrict to further slow him down. We didn’t actually
finish this as time ran out, so I won by decision. Not bad
for an old-timer.
Second Match: Fire Princess vs. Solar Flare burner
Duel #1: Man, this guy’s deck was a work of art. Every card
complemented every other card. Molten Destruction, Solar
Flare Dragon, UFO Turtle, Thing in the Crater, Spirit of
Flames, that Phoenix thing. He was able to wear out my
defenses with plain old attacking and monster removal. At
one point I had a little stall going and tribute summoned my
Magical Marionette just b/c I could, and he flips a
Torrential. He also defied my set Cyber Jar by flipping his
own. Finally, the perfect Fire deck finished me off with a
direct attack by--Injection Fairy Lily. Oh well, nobody’s
perfect. It went under my Messenger of Peace. Damn
loopholes.
Duel #2: It was my turn to be on the defensive. Again with
the Molten Destruction, this time with a Terraforming. That
means my Princesses will be too weak to defend. My Madoors
and Balloon Lizard couldn’t withstand those high attack
powers. Too bad I didn’t draw that Chorus of Sanctuary, it
would destroy that Molten and boost my defense. Before long
he wasn’t able to attack but had THREE Solar Flare Dragons
out with that Phoenix and a Spirit of Flames. After taking
1500 damage in one turn I had to try to get rid of them. I
did use Exiled Force on one Solar Flare, then flipped Call
of the Haunted and did it to a second one. I was about to
equip his Phoenix with Ekibyo Drakmord to destroy that, but
then read its effect. Bad idea. I had summoned both of my
1000 eyes but he kept finding ways to kill them. The
Messenger of Peace cutting down my points didn’t help,
either. When I had 300 lp, he still had one Solar Flare
Dragon out and I drew crap. Ekibyo’s 2-turn kill on the last
Flare wouldn’t be fast enough. I conceded there. He couldn’t
attack me, but his Dragon would burn me out on his next
turn. I always concede by slapping my hand on my deck like
it’s a game show buzzer and I’m trying to avoid a Whammy.
The structure of the tournament had changed, so I still had
a shot to advance despite a Match loss. Wow, they went all
hi-tech. The coordinator is figuring the pairings on a
laptop and printing them out. They even numbered the tables
for assigned seating.
Third Match: Me vs. angry guy with Dark Magician Deck
Duel #1: My deck really bugged this guy. He mistook some of
the things I said about strategy for sarcasm. He complained
about my stalling and made it clear he was annoyed. It was
kind of like dueling Bandit Keith.
Well, the Gravity Bind came out right away and I set it. In
the meantime I happily obliged him to destroy my Sangan,
Mother Grizzly, Mystic Tomato, and set Magician of Faith so
I could assemble my hand. A lot of them had to be summoned
in faceup ATK mode so I lost some points. Somewhere around
me at 2500 life points he thought he had it in the bag. An
Ookazi brought me close to death. I was holding Fissure and
debated about using it. For strategy purposes I told him
that I don’t know if I should use this now or save it in
case he has a Jinzo…I really hope you don’t, it’ll mess me
up. I managed to Penguin his field and then hit him directly
with Marie the Fallen One and Spirit Reaper. He flipped a
Magic Cylinder on Marie. Ouch, almost took me out. He still
had to lose a card. He then summoned some Magician guy…the
white one with 1900 Atk and attacked my Marie, and I happily
obliged. The points started ticking back up. I bumped off
that magician with Fissure, and tried to hit him directly
with Reaper again, but he flipped Spellbinding Circle which
of course killed it. Luckily I hadn’t summoned yet so I was
able to defend with a Madoor or something. Then he brings
out a Spirit Reaper but it couldn’t attack. Next turn, I
equipped his Reaper with Heart of Clear Water, hasta la
vista. Then I summoned my Fire Princess in ATK mode, just
daring to be attacked. His turn, I flipped Bind and a Solemn
Wishes, and it was downhill from there. It took a while, but
he never recovered. He did finally bring out a Jinzo, but I
had already gotten my Magical Marionette out and had wasted
spell cards just to get its counters on, and I immediately
removed 2 to kill off Jinzo. After that, my Solemn Judgment,
Magic Jammer and My Body as a Shield kept me safe. I even
got the Cannon Soldier/Serpent combo going again. He bumped
off the Soldier, but Call of the Haunted fixed that. I won
with like 8000 LP. This almost went too long, I was down to
3 cards in my deck. Card Destruction would have decked me
out. I also had Balloon Lizard out with like 8 counters, but
the effect was never activated.
Duel #2
He’s really annoyed now. My opening hand was a bit weak, but
Messenger made it ok. This one got a bit long-winded. I
don’t think he ever successfully attacked me. I wasn’t able
to use Cannon Soldier, so it was the slow burn with Solemn
Wishes and Princess. He got a Heavy Storm in which messed me
up. However, I was holding Metamorphosis and Magician of
Faith. I summoned MoF right into ATK mode and then activated
Meta to get Thousand-Eyes Restrict out, sucking up one of
his white Magicians. He had a Cyber Jar waiting to be
flipped, but thanks to 1000 eyes that wasn’t happening. No
flip effects, no attacking. That was it for that game. In
the meantime he summoned Dark Magician just because he
could. He also used Card Destruction, but I already had what
I needed and gained another 500 LP to boot. We actually ran
out of time, so I again won by decision.
Fourth Match: Me vs. some kid with Lv 3-4-5Warrior/Gearfried/Magician
beatdown
Duel #1: This kid’s deck was loaded with traps and he had a
thing for Marauding Captain, Lv 5 Warrior, and Breakers.
Very dangerous to attack this guy, but fortunately that’s
not the point of my deck. This duel was about 15 minutes.
More wholesome fun with combo of Messenger AND Bind, so
nobody can attack, along with Fire Princess and Solemn
Wishes. His monsters were useless. He managed to pick off
one of mine or a M/T every so often, but I had backups and
counters. I eventually wiped him out via Fire Princess burn
and the ever-popular Cannon Soldier/Sinister Serpent
cheesefest.
Duel #2: An embarrassment. I got a weak first hand. I had 4
M/T’s, and like an idiot played Messenger right away, just
begging for his first-hand Heavy Storm instead of setting a
dummy card. He got it. With only an Aqua Madoor as defense,
he beat me in 3 turns. Sorry you had to see that. Did I
mention I hate top decking a field card?
Duel #3: Better now. As they say on Star Trek, SHIELDS UP!
The Spirit Reaper held the fort until Fire Princess made her
arrival. I just got what I needed at the right time. I tried
to Call of the Haunted on my Reaper, and learned the hard
way that doesn’t work. Ehh--I don’t buy it…I say if we can
use Call on a Jinzo, then it should work on Reaper for the
same reason--they‘re not on the field when it‘s activated.
Well, I went along with it. No matter, I had Gravity Bind
and Solemn Wishes out, and Marie in the graveyard thanks to
my Magic Jammer. I’m gaining 700 LP per turn and he’s losing
1000 (500 on my Draw phase and another in my Standby). I had
set My Body as a Shield and Magician of Faith. He searched
his Cyber Jar and I knew what was coming. He flips Cyber
Jar, I activate Body and make it useless crap. My turn, I
flip Magician, and while tempted to take my Pot of Greed
back I instead took Body and re-set it. I summon Cannon
Soldier, he activates a Torrential. Bam, again with Body.
3000 points gone but I’m still safe. Somebody behind me says
to him, “This is where Jinzo would come in handy.” Not 2
turns later, he summons Jinzo. My Solemn Judgment fixed
that. Then he lays down a Premature Burial, but I just
happened to have Magic Jammer set. Heart of the Cards!
Uh-oh, he hits me with Heavy Storm and I can’t stop it. (He
should have used that first--I’d have jammed it and
Premature would have gone through.) I had Sinister in hand
by now, and used it to summon Thousand Eyes Restrict,
sucking up his Marauding Captain. It was the weakest
monster, but I chose that specifically because it gave 1000
eyes 1200 ATK, meaning I could activate my Heart of Clear
Water on it. Just in time, too. He got out that Gearfried
the Knight thing or whatever, when he’s not wearing his
armor, and announced that equipping Axe of Despair will
destroy my 1000 eyes. I had to explain Heart of Clear Water
to him twice and then make him read the card to get it. So
glad I thought to use it. He then uses Gearfried’s effect on
my Fire Princess instead. Fine, next turn the other one in
my hand took over, along with Cannon/Sinister. Game over.
The stall deck wins again!
This put me in the top 8. This is the best I’ve ever done in
a tournament, in the past I was never able to exceed 2 match
victories. This made me worthy of facing one of the store’s
best players.
Fifth Match--wow, I’ve never gotten to type that. Me vs..uhh,
still don’t know his name, with his deck of death.
This guy is good. In the past he’s beaten me senseless with
garden-variety beatdowns, an XYZ deck in which he had the
XYZ fusion out on his second turn with a Sinister in hand,
and we once faced off with dueling Magical Scientist decks.
I’ve never beaten him once.
Duel #1: My Deck let me down here. I used a Solemn Judgment
early on for his Torrential which cost a few thousand life
points, figuring it was a wise investment with my Spirit
Reaper defending. Well, out comes Creature Swap, goodbye
Reaper, and he summons his own Reaper. My field was empty
and he‘s got a Sangan and Reaper staring me down. My Gravity
Bind was in effect but not helping. I lose some hand. In
case of a Jinzo, I activated a Messenger anyway, but I
didn’t get a single monster or any way to defend. I did slap
a Heart of Clear water on his Reaper, but his Sangan
attacked me 3 times in a row and finished me off. The
three-eyed, three-toed hairball of death.
Duel #2: Despite knocking me silly in round one, he spends
about five minutes side-decking. I went first and set up the
usual defenses, throwing out Cannon Soldier as a defender,
and he of course obliterated my whole field on the next
turn. I let him take a free shot at Mother Grizzly, as I was
holding Metamorphosis and could search Serpent. On my next
turn I summoned the just-killed Serpent and activated
Metamorphosis for 1000-Eyes Restrict. I try to suck up his
Airknight, but he uses Torrential Tribute. I chained with
Ring of Destruction so we both take some damage at least. I
see what all the side-decking was for, he whips out a King
Tiger Wanghu which will make short work of 98% of my
monsters. I managed to get rid of the Tiger somehow,
Magician’d of Faith my Metamorphosis, used it right away on
her to get my 2nd 1000-Eyes out. La la la, he uses Creature
Swap on my 1000, tributes it for an Airknight, whips out
another King Tiger and hits me directly. Next turn I
summoned a Sangan and lost it right away so I could search.
I think I took Penguin Soldier. Next turn I set it, but he
used Nobleman of Crossout and hit me directly with both
monsters. I used Salvage at some point to get back a Penguin
and Madoor, but it didn’t help, I forget why. I’m almost
gone. I drew nothing useful, I ended my turn and he hit me
directly again for the win. I pretended I was in the
cartoon, shielding my face and turning away from him while
groaning “UHHHHH!” He didn’t think it was funny.
So that’s that. This was still my best tournament outing
ever. Out of 25 people I finished at 8th place. I shall
return. Right when I stopped dueling last, I was using a
Last Turn deck. I think I should retool that and try again,
I beat 2 people with it. I’ll have to modify it post-ban.
Since it thrives on low LP, it might work.
Props and Slops:
Props:
-To the ferociously underplayed Thousand Eyes Restrict. Not
for every deck, but it was gold in here today.
-My Body As A Shield: More useful than you might think,
especially the post-Dark Hole/Raigeki era. Will prevent
Torrentials and Cyber Jars.
-Heart of Clear Water: I stand by this card, it’s good if
you’re using weaker monsters.
Slops:
-A so called one-turn-kill move I stumbled on. Glad I didn’t
try it today, b/c it doesn’t actually work. Have Cannon
Soldier on field, use Shallow Grave on Magician of Faith,
flip her, return Grave, tribute her for Cannon Soldier, use
Shallow Grave on Magician, flip her, return Grave, tribute
for Cannon, etc. repeat till opponent’s points are gone.
Sounds good in theory, but it didn’t occur to me that you
can’t special summon/set Magician and then flip on the same
turn. I tried that once today and was corrected.
Seacrest out!
