RegnR8's Anti-Meta Monarchs
Tournament Report for 7/9/05

Hi all,

Welcome to today's edition of the tournament report! I hope this writing finds you well and winning!

Last week, my report generated a lot of discussion. A comment was made that a certain card I chose to use was "horrible". Another comment stated the deck wasn't even "close to decent". Some comments were helpful but, a few were critical of the way the deck is constructed. Well, everyone is entitled to their opinion, of course, but from comments I saw, some people simply do not realize what I am attempting to accomplish and do not understand I do not want to delve too far into the "cookie cutter" decks of late. I will have to admit though, my side deck, which is geared to bring the deck to a more consistant performer, was more effective than the main deck, and I am probably going to switch the deck up to reflect that. I consistantly went for 13 cards from my side deck between duels, and they are what really helped out today.

I didn't change the deck any from last week, even though it did not perform as well as I had hoped.

About 20 people today, a decent crowd. A few more kids than usual but, a lot of better players, too. I did NOT get paired up with a kid except in the semi-finals.

The tournament was moved from 11AM to 2PM today to accomodate a signing by an Atlanta Braves baseball player coming in for a autograph session. I half expected no one to show up but, when I arrived about 15 minutes late, there was still a good crowd.

ROUND 1
MONARCHS VS BEATDOWN WITH A LITTLE HAND CONTROL

This deck is pretty standard beatdown material. Nothing too different or unexpected.

GAME 1

Well, not much to report on this first duel. I pretty much get wiped out. He plays Heavy Storm on 3 of my set cards and uses Drop Off on me. I summon a Kycoo but it gets Trap Hole'd. Lightning Vortex wipes out my field and I have pretty much no hand and I lose badly. 8000 - 0. Not a good start.

GAME 2

I side deck out all the Tigers, Light of Intervention and the Oxs and some other stuff to put in the Nimbles, Jinzo, Scapegoat, Metamorphosis and bunch of other things (even the Torrential Tribute, which I normally do not use).

Thousand Eyes Restrict totally locks up the field and I tribute one for Mobius and Snatch Steal his Vampire Lord and that was pretty much all she wrote. GG.

GAME 3

This time, he side decks and I do not. Drop Off's, TiV and Vortex waste his cards and hand. He summons a Cyber Jar in attack position and attacks me and this immediately tells me he has no monsters. Why did he summon it? I do not know, go ask your dad. (A little Dr. Seuss reference). I play conservatively, saving my resources. I take a few feeble attacks, but when the time is right, I unleash my fury. Soon, he is topdecking and a lone Kycoo attacks him a few times and I even get in a couple of whacks with Sinister Serpent for laughs.

ROUND 2
MONARCHS VS EARTH BEATDOWN

I watched the tail end of a duel between this deck and another player. I noticed Gaia Power on the field and Goblin, Ancient Gear Beast and Injection, along with Berserk, Gigantes and other big Earth types, even a Ancient Gear Golem made it to the field one time.

GAME 1

A win the die roll and open up with Graceful and Delinquent. I fill my hand while emptying his. He Snatch's my Gorilla, but I Bottomless the Gear Beast he tributes it for. Light of Intervention forces him to play his Nimble face up so, I Snatch it and tribute it for Mobius. A couple of turns later, I have Mobius and a Call of the Haunted Kycoo on the field and he can't recover.

GAME 2

A long duel forces us both into top decking. I have attacked all his Nimbles so, he's at 10,300LP and I'm pretty low. Well, in a duel similar to one I had last week, but this time the shoe is on the other foot, he gets Injection out with 10,300LP and I get hammered like a nail! OUCH. GG.

GAME 3

I go to my side deck and switch out 13 cards. On his first turn, he Snatch's my Gorilla and tributes it for a Machine King. I am able to stall with Swords and manage to tribute a set Kycoo for Jinzo. I saw Limiter Removal in an earlier duel and he had two S/T cards set. I was afraid of him having a set Limiter so, I Vortex his King instead of attacking it and get in a clear shot with my Jinzo.

He Premature's his Machine King and suicides with my Jinzo, so I guess he didn't have the Limiter set after all.

I Premature my Jinzo and he's holding a bunch of S/T cards and can't get rid of it. I attack him with out reprisal.

ROUND 3
MONARCHS VS WARRIOR BEATDOWN

This is a pure warrior deck. Command Knight, Blade Knight, Marauding Captain, RotA, etc., etc.

GAME 1

I win the die roll and summon a Gorilla and set Ring.

He opens up with Graceful Charity and then Pot of Greed. Crap. This doesn't look good. He activates RotA and gets a Chaosrider Gustaph. Yeah, whatever. He sets one face down and two S/T.

I NoC his Cyber (thankfully) and tribute my Gorilla for Mobius destoying his set MST and Call of the Haunted. He chains his MST to my Ring. I do not activate it and attack for 2400. I set the Ceasefire.

He Heavy's and I activate the Ceasefire. He follows that up with Vortex and can't do anything else.

I Premature Mobius, summon DDWL and he never recovers. I pretty much run over him.

GAME 2

I have the upperhand the entire duel. Desperate, he empties his hand, summoning a Blade Knight with UWS and an A Forces. He does get in one good hit on me, but I Snatch Steal his Blade Knight next turn, summon Breaker and attack for the win.

SEMI-FINALS

Well, here I am in the semi-finals. Not bad for a deck that uses sucky and horrible cards.

MONARCHS VS CHAOS BEATDOWN

I haven't played this young man in several months. He hasn't been coming lately, but he knows his stuff. I think he's about 14 or 15 years old, but that really has no bearing on the fact that he's in the semi-finals. He may have had a pretty easy road up to the semi's because of his lack of points, but I am not taking this duel lightly.

GAME 1

I lose the die roll, but get a fairly decent opening hand. Pot, Light of Intervention, King Tiger, Kycoo and Bottomless. He sets one face down and one S/T. I draw Enraged Battle Ox and summon it and it gets Ringed. Ouch.

He doesn't summon anything next turn. I activate Light of Intervention and summon a Tiger. This totally screws him over. He keeps dropping out Magician of Faith and Night Assailant and they're both destroyed and I know he's doing it on purpose to get Light and Darks in the graveyard. Sure enough, he special summons Chaos Sorceror. I Bottomless it, he uses priority, but I have three monsters on the field and he has nothing left. I use a Bait Doll to get rid of his Magic Cylinder. Yeah, that card is horrible (sarcasm).

GAME 2

I get murdered. His Cyber Jar kills me, giving him everything and giving me nothing. I stall for a while, but he just got all he needed in the Cyber flip to totally cream me in a hurry.

GAME 3

I side deck in the 13 cards again. This was a very close duel. He stalls with Scapegoat and so do I. He quickly summons an Asura Priest and cockily declares, "I attack all of them!" I tell him to hang on a minute and activate Ring of Destruction.. LoL.

We both stall a good while, but I top deck Jinzo when I have Swords out and a set Nimble. He has a Gorilla out and I tribute my Nimble for Jinzo and attack his Gorilla for the win.

FINALS
MONARCHS VS BEATDOWN

This deck is a severe walloping beatdown deck and totally wiped me out a couple of weeks ago. Goblin after Goblin kept coming out and I pretty much got slaughtered in a hurry. I knew I would probably lose the first duel because my monsters were just too weak. If I got a bunch of Tigers and Oxs, I knew I couldn't compete with his Goblins and such.

GAME 1

We go back and forth for a while. I hold out longer than expected, but he counters everything I try to do and I lose. His Cyber Jar gave us a lot of resources but, I used mine up before he used his. I didn't lose quite as bad as I suspected, but I did lose nonetheless.

GAME 2

I side deck in 13 cards. What a great duel. We counter everything each of us does for a long while because he fliped his Cyber Jar and we both get a hand full of cards. This time, I knew he had BLS in is hand and could summon him, but a timely Delinquent Duo luckily plucked it from his hand and sent it to the graveyard where he happily slept the remainder of the duel. Later, I tribute a Gorilla for Mobius but he chains his Book of Moon to it. When he tries to attack it with his Gorilla, Mirror Force takes care of that ape and I attack him with Mobius next turn for the win.

GAME 3

Another great duel. I attack him pretty good early on and know he gets Cyber Jar with Sangan but he doesn't set it for a while. When he does set it, I draw Pot of Greed and hope I draw Nobleman of Crossout but do not. I have a Bottomless set and take a chance and do NOT attack his Cyber. He flips his Cyber Jar and gets a few monsters that I Bottomless. Gotta love it! Cyber Jar AGAIN fills our hands with cards, so we play carefully from that point on. The Cyber flip gives him a BLS and I have to be very careful now. Soon, he does bring him out, but in defense position, and removes my set Nimble, attack with a GAF and setting a face down monster.

I draw Nobleman this time and take out his set monster, summon Tribe and call warrior, getting rid of his GAF and BLS. Haha! I was at 500LP but managed to mount a comeback with Tribe because he had no hand left!

HEY! I win. It's amazing how you can go from total loser to total winner in a week. It does have a lot to do with luck but, today I had a lot of duels that were actually won on skill and thought. BLS came out once and I took him out. Yes, it is easy to get rid of IF (and that is a big IF) you have the right cards at the right time.

Not bad, I get my packs for winning and get a Lightning Vortex (yeah), a Dark Mirror Force (meh) and a Brain Jacker (double meh).

Well, that's all for today. Not bad if I do say so myself.

Until next time, happy dueling!
