This week was rather interesting. Only 7 people showed up and the tournament only lasted about an hour and 40 minutes. There were two kids there, I assume this was their first tournament ever, and they both played with those big duel-disk-thingies. I didn't make too many changes to my deck other than putting in a few of the cards I got last time: Guardna and Bottomless. I also wanted to try out the Drop Offs, didn't think my deck really had enough hand control in it.

Well for some reason, my parents decided that we could start going to more tournaments. Vintage Stock is about 40 minutes away, so we normally don't get to go very often. We didn't go last week because I refuse to play Traditional and they switch off every week.

Duel 1: Me vs. Jordan (Pretty young, used duel disk)

I was kinda happy that I got to play a younger person again for my first round, good warm up for me. Also, it's probably good I played him over someone else because there would've been a lot of arguments over rules, and I'm just not the type of guy to start correcting every move he makes. I figured, this is probably this kid's first tournament and I know I'm going to beat him very easily, with or without him playing right, no point in making a big deal about it. These were fairly short matches that were drug on because of his messing with the duel disk. I lost some lifepoints when he Changed of Hearted my Tomato, pumped it up with a couple cards, then attacked my Reaper. My Tomato did most of the damage to him. He would've been done a turn or two sooner, but he was keeping his lifepoints on his duel disk and his numbers kept coming out differently from mine somehow…oh well, like I said, no point in making a big deal about it.

            Me: 8000-6200

            Him: 8000-6000-4600-3200-1800-1100-0

Second round I beat him pretty easily, with my Berserk Gorilla doing most of the damage. A couple times he activated traps from his hand, I just ignored it and went along with it. Then at one point, I had used Call of the Haunted on Apprentice and I was going to Swap for his Mobius, but I got distracted somehow and he went ahead and started his turn and attacked Apprentice for 2000. Well I just let him go and beat him anyways. I think if it weren't taking so long because of the duel disk, I might have let him win a round.

            Me: 8000-7600-5600

            Him: 8000-9000-9900-7500-5500-3500-1500-0

And of course, like when I play anyone, I ask if I can look at the cards to trade. He shows me his deck and I see nothing I really want. So I look at him and he's going through my deck, and of course, he picks out good stuff like Call of the Haunted and Drop Off…well…I certainly wasn't going to trade him, so I gave him the: "Sorry, I can't trade from my deck during the tournament…" line. Then I wanted to trade for the Versago he got from his TP5, but he could find nothing he wanted out of my whole book of rares somehow.

Then I went to see how my sister's duel was going. Her opponent (the same kid I beat for first last time) had won the first round with 4800 lifepoints left, they tied the second round, and then she won the third round with 5400 left. Now we all knew what to do…the person who had more lifepoints in the round they won is supposed to win in the case of a tie…She knew she won, I knew she won, her opponent knew she won, some people watching knew she won…however, when he went up to report his loss…they said that there can't be 1-1-1 tie, that they would have to play another round. Now I don't know about you, but that's a whole lotta crap. We all knew he lost, even he did, but they made them play another round. And of course she ended up losing.

Duel 2: Me vs. Nate, he got the bye first round.

This whole duel lasted maybe 5 minutes. That's right. Round 1 + Round 2 < 5 minutes. I was actually surprised at this, he had given me more trouble last time. This week he came into the store talking about how great his hand control deck was going to do…I hate it when people use the word "owned," but that's exactly what I did. Took out his whole hand and kept card advantage the whole time. Each round ended in a matter of turns. But one thing happened that I really didn't understand…I played Painful Choice, offering him: Mefist, Jinzo, Sinister, Book of Moon, and I think Drop Off…and he gave me Mefist. He did the same thing to me last time and both times It's come back to hurt him.

            Me: 8000

            Him: 8000-7000-5600-2400-0

This round went by in the exact same way. I was able to take card advantage and had an answer for just about everything. Another thing I found weird about him, when he won the coin toss, and now after I beat him, he would always choose to go second. Most people I play always choose first, oh well.

            Me: 8000-5600-5400-5000-4500-3700-3100-0

            Him: 8000-7700-7400-7300-7100-6300-4700-3100-0

We played a third round because the first two went by so fast. This again was an easy win. His deck used Secret Pass to the Treasure + a bunch of different cards, such as Hayabusa Knight. I think his biggest problem was that he had probably not playtested his deck enough ahead of time. Good ideas and combos, but I don't think I even discarded one card because of him.

            Me: 8000-7000-6000-5000

            Him: 8000-6600-4800-3200-2700-1400-800-0

Duel 3: Me vs Kid that my sister beat but got screwed over on the store not knowing the rules. (Sorry, still don't know his name)

Round one was fairly close, this kid is a lot better than most of the other people there, but still not that great. This is the second time in a row I've had to play him in the finals, so I knew I could beat him again. Before we started, he tried to tell me that we should play whoever wins gives second place a pack since they don't give away second place prizes. So apparently, he knew it too. I kept hand control most of the round so it wasn't too hard. Afterwards I forgot to sidedeck in my Kinetic Soldiers and Kycoo since he was using Warrior-Chaos.

            Me: 8000-4900-3900-2400

            Him: 8000-5600-4800-4700-4300-2900-1500-0

I really should've won Round 2 in my opinion. I had massive field and hand advantage the whole time. He had a Mirage of Nightmare on the field, but wasn't drawing the cards to destroy it. On one turn, he had to discard 3 of his 4 cards, and just happened to get Scientist, and I just happened to have an attack position Spirit Reaper, and I just happened to have nothing to protect myself…

            Me: 8000-6000-5000-0

            Him: 8000-6000-5700-1700

Round 3 was a whole lot better for me. I was able to take field and hand advantage and stop just about everything he could throw at me. I sidedecked in the Kycoo and Kinetics. I drew a Kinetic in my opening hand, but didn't end up using it, my other cards were able to get the job done. He used Snatch Steal on my Don but nothing ever came out of it except a whole lot of life points for me, I had my scapegoats there to protect me.

            Me: 8000-6600-7600-8600-6600-5200

            Him: 8000-7200-6800-4800-3400-1900-0

And with that, I won my second advanced format tournament in a row at Vintage Stock. 2 for 2 isn't too bad of a record I guess, but I hope I can continue going and making it better. Another thing I don't like about this place is their prizes, instead of just giving away store credit, you get 3 packs of your choice, which is about a $15 value. So why shouldn't they let me get one of the new decks (a $11 value) instead? I mean, I'd be the one losing out on it. Oh well, I ended up getting 3 Dark Beginning packs, this time I pulled slightly better than last time. I got a super rare Relinquished and a Limiter Removal out of one pack, and a Magic Drain and Morphing Jar #2 out of another. I also got 3 helpful tip cards, now no one can stop me with my new knowledge. Out of my TP5 pack, I got Tornado Bird, Curse of Royal, and another Versago.

Pros:

            -     Winning

            -     Advanced Format allowing people with skill, but not all the good cards, to have a chance to win.

-         My parents actually driving us out there.

-         Mefist the Infernal General being an overlooked card.

-         Advanced Format allowing people to use originality in building a competitive deck.

-     Not having as many ruling arguments this week.

-     Pulling better stuff from my prize packs this time.

-     Getting a bunch of those little UDE pens.

Cons:

-         Low attendance at an Advanced Format tourney.

-         The store not knowing what to do in case of a tie.

-         The same kid trying to pull that: "I can change a Goats position the same turn I summon it" crap
