Dragon’s Decree

The Gathering Place

Casselbury, Florida (about 15 minutes north of Orlando)

Date: December 17th

Time: 2:30 PM

Attendees: Only 10 (Huge Magic PTQ Event taking place)

Fee: $5.00

Prizes: All entrants will receive a pack of their choice, top 4 (typically a top 8) receive two packs of choice, and the winner walks away with 10, while 2nd place gets 5.

Greetings to all! This is my first submission, hopefully the first one of many. Many thanks to some of the other older tourney submitter’s who now lend their expertise to others (yes, RegR8, I am talking about you). Well, in a nutshell, I find that I had some available time, and was going to meet up with a friend of mine, when my daughter and girlfriend agreed to come with me to watch me in a tournament. So off we went, signed up and waited for the tourney to begin.

Today the Gathering Place was packed as I have ever seen it (including the Yugioh Regional Tourney from last week). This was due to the Magic the Gathering PTQ that was being held, with the winner of the PTQ getting an all expense paid trip to Hawaii! That made me want to enter, and I don’t even know how to play Magic. When will Yugioh have nice trips like this??? Oh well, we held our tourney in the backroom, and all ten were ready to go. On to the deck:

Round 1: Me vs Jorge (Zombies)

Jorge is a nice kid, but apparently can be annoying. Since he works at the store, he was using the store’s deck, which I guess is supposed to scare people into saying “ZOMG, the STORE’s DECK???” I lose the roll (a 2?). He does the traditional one and one. I draw and get Sangan with my opening LV6, Messenger, D.D. Survivor, MST and Rush Recklessly. I summon Sangan and attack into Pyramid Turtle (ha, ok) so I set MST and end. (me 7600, him 8000) He tributes Turtle for VLord and attacks Sangan and calls traps. I search my deck for D.D. Warrior Lady and Torrential Tribute, add the lady to my hand and drop TT to the grave (me 6400 – him 8000). I MST’d his fresh set at the end and then drew Snatch Steal for my turn. At that point I was a little miffed. I summoned DD Survivor and then Snatched his VLord. Attacked for 3800 and called trap, then set Rush Recklessly. (me 6400 – 4200) He drew and MST’d snatch, summoned Reaper and attacked VLord into Survivor. I then went into my favorite phrase, “Ok the attack is legal and proceeds, as we enter damage calculation, I activate Rush Recklessly targeting my D.D. Survivor, increasing his attack by 700 to 2500 points”. His VLord dies and his ATK position reaper looks quite yummy. He sets two and ends. (me 6400 – 4700) I draw Decree and attack with DD Survivor (I smell a Torrential). I set Call and Decree and end.(6400 – 3200) He draws and moves his Reaper to defense and sets a creature. I draw smashing ground and summon D.D Warrior Lady. He Torrentials and I chain Royal Decree as he was trying to be quick and move Reaper into the grave, then I chained Call to get back Sangan. DDWL takes care of the Reaper, and Sangan and DD Survivor munch on goats. My plan is next turn I’ll tribute Sangan for LV6, and clear out his goats. If he leaves a set creature, I’ll have Messenger to keep him from ramming into my LV6, and if not, then I will level up and that will be game. Problem with plans is they fall through. He draws and flips dark hole (crap) and then summons a Turtle to poke at me for 1200. (5200-3200) Now I need a creature because I overextended and now am at a disadvantage because my in hand defense card will not stop the turtle, even though my opponent is topdecking. I draw . . . LV 4? That will work. Summon LV4, attack the turtle, let my opponent search for Ryu Kokki, and then drop MoP in MP2. Special summon LV6 from the deck (leaving the one in my hand) at end phase. (5200-2800) He draws and says go. I draw Magician of Faith, pay for MoP, set Faith and say GO. 5100 – 2800 He draws, sets a creature and plays swords and says go (I get back MST) with magician flip. I draw Reinforcement, pay for MoP, activate Reinforcement and get Exiled, summon exiled with priority to kill Ryu Kokki and attack his facedown Sangan? Not what I was expecting . . . He gets reaper, and I level up. He draws and sets a creature. I draw NoC and show it. On to game 2

He sides and I don’t, there was a lot to this duel that I don’t remember, but this part I could not forget if I tried. I brought out my Level 6 again with Royal Decree backing me up (I had blocked a Sakuretsu this time). My opponent draws and then asks me how does the effect of LV6 work. I explain that LV6 is completely unaffected by spell cards. He says “What about cards that target the field?” I explain that LV6 would be unaffected, and then explain for example if I have Dark Hole with LV6 out, all creatures except him would be destroyed and go to the graveyard, because he is not AFFECTED by the spell. He calls “Judge” and the Tourney Organizer (a friend of mine I might add) comes over, and rules that LV6 cannot be TARGETTED, so cards that affect the field would affect him. I politely disagree, so he says he will ask an official LV 1 judge (another person that I know, however I know him to be in the MIDDLE of that Magic Regional PTQ. The TO comes back and actually says that Horus LV6 CAN be destroyed by Dark Hole/Lightning Vortex, etc. Flabbergasted, I abide by the ruling and send my LV6 to the grave. Fuming, and with Kycoo in hand, I draw Premature, bring him back, summon Kycoo, and attack for 4100. He draws and attempts to activate Book of Life, which I remind him he cannot because of Kycoo. He then offers the handshake, and I move to get my ruling fixed.

Between matches I introduce the T.O. to Netrep, and ask him if he could activate Smashing Ground on Legendary Fisherman with UMI in play. He investigates and we move to round 2.

Record: 1-0

Round 2: Me vs 12-year old with no sleeves and about 85 cards in his deck.

As soon as this kid sees me, he is like ZOMG I am going to lose (that should have been a hint for me, but I am like whatever) I shake his hand and say anything can happen. I win the dice roll and tell him to go first. He sets a creature and 4 spell/traps. I draw LV6, LV6, Royal, Royal, Sakuretsu, and Smashing Ground??? My deck obviously is upset I did not try hard enough to change the ruling. Needless to say I actually overcame this horrendous hand (I drew LV8 next turn) and won in two attacks after a Cyber Jar flip saved me with four creatures and Heavy, but I did take damage.

Game two Much better hand, another Cyber Jar flip brings out the LV4’s to munch on some sleeveless cards. The other thing to note was that he flipped Wall of Revealing Light and paid 3000 with LV6 out. I chained Royal Decree (I felt bad too, but at the same time I would be doing him a disservice if I did not play to TEACH him the game) Interesting banter as well, as he asks me how old I was. I pointed to the cute little girl at the end of the table with the burn deck and said, “That is my daughter, to give you an idea of my age!” Everyone at the table enjoyed that one. Onto Round 3 . . .

Record: 2-0

Round 3: Me Vs Dre (my teammate and friend)

Now I get my friend who at the time was 0-2 and I am wondering about this swiss schedule. I figured I’d duel the other guy with the regional mat who was also 2-0 (he beat my friend) I think in my head well I am 2-0, I’ll scoop to him to see if I can get him into the top 4. So I do that. I also seek out a LV1 judge to fix this ruling for me.

Record: 2-1

Round 4: Me vs Weird Deck

So now the T.O. comes to me and announces to all that LV6 is COMPLETELY unaffected by Spell cards (the correct ruling) and apologizes to me. I told him not to worry, as I had still won that match. On to the duel . . .

I cannot figure it out, is it burn, bounce, what is it? He ran a Sasuke Samurai #4, then Nimble, Exiled Force, then Spirit Reaper, and when I cleared all of those, he sets a creature and ends. I have Decree and Book of Moon set, a D.D. Survivor in ATK and LV6, NoC, and Reinforcement of the Army. I draw Sangan and play Reinforcement (looking for Exiled), and he chains Magic Drain! I love it when my gut is right! I let it be negated and then play Nobleman of Crossout, and I hit Morphing Jar #2? What fantastic tech, as I though if this was against a Cyber Dragon swarm type player, they could go into half their deck! My NoC crossed out ALL THREE! From there, I summon Sangan and attack with DD who gets hit with Offerings to the Doomed? This deck has more TECH then you can shake a stick at (but he only had 1 card in hand) so he takes 1000. After that, I was able to build my hand advantage up so I ended up with more answers and he couldn’t recover.

I side in Mystic Swordsman, Wave-Motion Cannon, the 2nd Nobleman of Extermination, and Solemn Judgment. Second duel, I flipped his morphing jar #2 this time with one creature out, and lost Premature, Sakuretsu, and Messenger before getting Sangan. This time it is Wave, Sakuretsu, and go. Wave gets up to 5000 while he stalls all of my attacks (I know, I got greedy) and of course, he drew MST. I finally draw LV4 and attack his Sasuke, and he loses the coin flip! What fun! LV6 comes out and I crossout his set Morphing Jar #2 and attack with LV6 and Assailant for the win.

Record: 3-1

Finals Round 1 Top 4: Me vs. Eugene (Phoenix/Beatdown Hybrid)

Eugene is a stellar player. He is 9, maybe 10, but he plays like Bobby Fischer (the preteen chess prodigy, it’s a movie; look it up). He is a great kid, but it sucks to play him because he is so methodical, every move is precise. Don’t make a mistake, and he might win. Make a mistake and he will.

I drew LV4, Sangan, D.D. Survivor, Reinforcement, Sak, and TT. I summon Sangan and attack (what? Mistake number 1) into Apprentice Magician. Searches Magician of Faith. I set TT and end. He draws, MST’s my TT. Flips Magician and gets back MST, Snatches Sangan, summons Hand, and POOF there is the bird. I get DDWL with Sangan’s effect and take 2700 to the face (8000 – 5300) I draw MST and hit his Armor, summon DDWL and attack into the Bird, taking 900 and removing. (8000 – 4400) I set Sak and Reinforcement as a bluff and end. He MST’s the bluff (whew). Summons Berserk Gorilla who hits the armor, moves Faith to def. I draw NoE and play it. It removes TT. Wow, I summon LV4 and kill Faith, level up to 6. He sets and ends. I draw Royal, set and end. He passes, I draw, kill a facedown Berserk Gorilla and level up to 8 with NO defenses. He summons DDA and I watch as he takes 1300 to the face to remove LV8. (6700 – 4400) Now this match comes down to his support for his deck versus my support, as both of our deck centerpieces are RFG. It goes back and forth, but I go down in flames. Mobius kept killing my backfield.

I side in the one Bottomless, one SJ to stop the Hand. He didn’t need the Hand, the Finger, or the Bird, as he never pulled it out. DD Capsule brought out Mobius, and as I was struggling to gain control, I for some reason did not play the Nobleman in my hand with his facedown creature, only to watch him flip the Faith, and tribute for Mobius and hit me for 2100 and the win. This duel was WAYY more instructional then me teaching that kid with no sleeves. So I missed out on 6 packs! But got two IOC’s and pulled a Getsu Fuhma. The Regionals guy (he had a mat) was running a regular CAW deck (Cyber Dragon, DD Assailant, and Warriors) and he split with Eugene, and since it was 15 packs, they each got seven and dueled for the 8th pack.

Kudos:

- To my 6 year old daughter for playing in a tag-team duel with my friend Dre and almost winning.

- To the TO for correcting his ruling error

- To Eugene for a great duel

Until next time! Feel free to hit me up with questions or comments!
