7 Rounds Swiss Format - Advanced
74 people

Hi all,

Welcome to this week's special edition of the tournament report! Regionals were this past weekend in the sunny south and I was looking forward to finally putting the Pandas to the test in a big event. I wanted to finish the day with a winning record. That was my goal. If I got into the Final 4, that'd be great. I didn't expect to, and I had no delusional ideas that I would get there. I just wanted to have fun.

I already thought the two dominant deck types would be Warrior and Burn and I was right. Warrior decks were rampant and Burn was not far behind in the deck types there. I struggled with my side deck forever. My main deck was good to go, but I wanted to side deck a little more anti burn. I felt the main deck, as is, could handle the warrior decks, because the more monsters they have on the field, the better when I bring out a Panda. I felt it's weakness could be against a really speedy burn deck or a stall deck, so I side decked accordingly. I realized about halfway through the tournament, I am going to need to revamp the side deck again because there were only certain cards I consistantly switched during the day, the rest were useless.

We drove about 45 minutes to get there and arrived a little early. Registration started about twenty minutes late but that was ok. Overall, the tournament ran smoothly and I had no problems with the judging or anything. As far I as saw, the judging was fine.

Here's my deck as it stood this week.

ROUND 1

Panda VS Warrior/Control

GAME 1

I win the coin toss and choose to go first. I get Airknight, Ojama Trio, Enraged Battle Ox, Premature Burial and something else (I can't read my own writing! LOL!). I draw a Waboku. I set Waboku, Trio and set the Ox.

He plays PoG, sets 1 M/T and summons Mystic Swordsman LV4 and attacks my face down Ox. That was stupid on my part, eh?

I draw a Panda and Premature Burial my Ox. He activates Book of Moon on my Ox. I end my turn.

He summons a Spirit Reaper and attacks the Ox with Mystic Swordsman. I activate Waboku when he attacks with Spirit Reaper.

I activate Ojama Trio on my next turn and summon the Panda. The Panda is at 3300ATK and he has a face up Spirit Reaper on the field that I happily attack.

Next turn, he tributes the Spirit Reaper and Mystic Swordsman for DMoC. That blows. My Panda is at 2800, the same ATK as DMoC and he doesn't attack.

I attack his DMoC next turn with the Panda. I set Fiber Jar and end my turn.

He activates Change of Heart and flips my Fiber Jar. Darn. I get Waboku, Snatch, Heavy Storm, PoG and Spear Dragon after the Fiber flip. He summons Berserk Gorilla and attacks. It's 5200 to 3100, I'm winning.

I draw and Airknight. Horray. This should be good. I play PoG and get a BoM and a Panda. If I only had an Ojama Trio about now. I Heavy Storm away his Magic Cylinder, Snatch and Sac his Gorilla for my Airknight and attack, drawing a Battle Ox with Airknights effect. I set the BoM and Waboku, ending my turn.

He plays Heavy Storm! Deja Vu! I activate Waboku. He sets a monster and ends his turn.

I draw a Giant Trunade. I'm thinking his face down card is either Fiber or Cyber so, I attack with the Airknight. It's a DD Warrior Lady and he removes my Airknight from play with her effect. Crap. I draw a card but I don't remember what it was. I summon the Spear Dragon and set BoM, ending my turn.

He summons Exiled Force and I BoM it.

I summon an Ox, trample his Exiled Force with it and then attack him for 1900 with the Spear Dragon. I set Giant Trunade as a bluff and end my turn.

He summons a Skilled Dark and attacks my Spear Dragon. It's 5200 to 200.

I draw Jinzo and tribute my Ox for him and attack his Skilled Dark for the win.

GAME 2

He chose to go first. I get BoM, MST, Waboku, Ox, and a Spear Dragon.

He sets 1 M/T and summons a Gorilla.

I draw Giant Trunade and MST his BoM. I BoM his Gorilla, summon Spear Dragon and attack. I set Waboku and end my turn.

He summons Breaker and removes the token to destroy my Waboku which I activate (HA HA I love that). Then he Snatch Steal's my Spear Dragon! Curses.

I draw a Gorilla, I gain 1000LP from Snatch and set Giant Trunade and attack his Breaker. Ouch.

He sets a monster and ends his turn.

I draw a Panda. I gain another 1000LP from Snatch Steal. I'm kind of liking this. I summon Ox and attack his set Cyber Jar. I get an Airknight, Giant Trunade, PoG, BoM and NoE. Pure JUNK! He gets TiV on the field and Jinzo in his hand. I play PoG and get Fiber Jar and SoRL. I activate Swords and set BoM.

He activates Premature Burial, gets Cyber and the sacs it for Jinzo. Uh oh. He plays Heavy Storm, I chain the BoM to his Jinzo. Whew. He attacks me with TIV. He sets 1 M/T and ends his turn.

I NoE his Compulsory Evacuation Device and he doesn't chain it. I set Fiber Jar becasue that's all I have except an Airknight, I was hoping to draw a Panda to hit his face down Jinzo, but I didn't. I set Giant Trunade and end my turn.

He flips up his Jinzo and then activates SoRL which immediatly flips my Fiber Jar up! Wow! That's not good. Or is it? I get Jinzo, Premature Burial, Ojama Trio and something else I can't decipher LOL. He summons Don Zaloog and attacks, taking my Premature Burial from my hand. Oh well.

I summon a Gorilla and attack his Don. I set BoM and Ojama Trio.

He summons a Shining Angel and I BoM it.

I draw another BoM. I activate Ojama Trio and attack a token with the Gorilla, I wasn't about to send the Shining Angel to the graveyard. I set the BoM.

He summons Magical Scientist and I BoM it, too. Haha.

I draw a Panda and summon it at 2800 Attack. I hit his Scientist for the win.

RECORD 1-0

ROUND 2

Pandas VS Burn/Life Gain/Gravity Bind/Control thing. It was kind of cool.

GAME 1

He chose to go first. I draw Call of the Haunted, 2 Ojama Trio, Heavy Storm, and Waboku. He activates Wave Motion Cannon, sets one other M/T card and sets a monster.

I draw some magic or trap card. I have NO monsters in my hand. I Heavy Storm his Wave Motion Cannon and his other card, set Waboku and Ojama Trio and have to end my turn. This is crap.

He sets another monster and ends his turn.

I draw Cyber Jar. Horray, at least it's something! I set it and BoM and end my turn.

He activates Solemn Wishes and plays Confiscation, getting rid of my Fiber Jar. My Cyber Jar gets flipped and I get stuff and he gets stuff. I go ahead and activate Ojama Trio. He Forceful Sentry's my Jinzo, sets 4 magic and traps, sets a monster and ends his turn.

I summon an Ox and attack, he activates Gravity Bind. I activate SoRL and it flips up his Cyber Jar! Crap. I get a BoM in the Cyber flip along with some other pretty useless crap and I don't even remember what he got.

On his turn he activates The Shallow Grave and I get Fiber Jar and he tributes my Fiber and Ox for Lava Golem and I immediately BoM the Lava Golem. Ha. That's funny. He can't get rid of it to attack. He ends his turn.

He Drop's Off my Airknight and then next turn he Drop's Off my Spear Dragon. All this time, I'm sitting with a face down Lava Golem on my side of the field and he keeps gaining 500LP with Solemn Wishes. This is slow and painful. Then he hits me with a Cemetary Bomb for 1200LP damage. Urgh. This is killing me slowly.

I finally summon a Panda and he RoD's it, the I Call of the Haunted it back and he Torrentials! This is frustrating me now!

He starts nickle and dimeing me to death with an Inaba White Rabbit and he keeps gaining life with the Solemn Wishes again. Mercifully he finally Changed of Heart my Spear Dragon and killed me. He was at like 7700LP when it was over. Dang that was painful. This first duel took over 20 minutes.

GAME 2

I went to my side deck. I took out the Berserk Gorillas and the 2 Final Attack Orders and put in 3 Sonic Duck and 2 NoC.

My side deck comes through for me. I NoE his Cemetary Bomb. I had nothing in my graveyard so he could not activate it. Then I NoC his Spirit Reaper, all in my first turn. I hit him pretty good with a couple of Sonic Ducks and an Airknight early and had the upperhand in a hurry. He did get End of Anubis on the field but I managed to protect myself with Waboku and then Cyber Jar'd him away. He hit me with a Spirit Reaper one time and that was all the damage he did to me. 7700 - 0LP. Good win.

GAME 3

This was even faster than the second game. I hit his face up Spirit Reaper with a Panda at 3300 attack and a Battle Ox for 1700. Next turn, he leaves his Spirit Reaper in attack position and sets some M/T cards. I draw Giant Trunade and there's nothing he can do to stop it so, I hit his Spirit Reaper again for 3300 for the win.

Side decks are CRUCIAL, not like some others would have you believe. It really was the deciding factor in the previous duel, so I feel pretty confident at least a few cards are worthy of being in the side deck. My side deck also was extremely important all throughout the day.

RECORD 2-0

LUNCH BREAK! MmmmmMcDonald's within walking distance.

ROUND 3

Panda VS Gravity Bind/Control thing. 2nd wierd deck of the day.

GAME 1

I chose to go first and draw Waboku, Giant Trunade, Call of the Haunted, PoG and BoM. I get a Battle Ox and play PoG. I get a Spear and another Giant Trunade with PoG.  I summon Spear, set BoM and end my turn.

He sets one F/D monster and a couple of M/T cards and ends his turn.

I activate Giant Trunade and he chains with Waboku. I summon an Ox and end my turn.

He draws and summons Injection and I BoM her. Ha. My Book of Moon's are coming through for me today!

I attack Lily with a Spear Dragon and then hit the Spirit Reaper with my Battle Ox. He was Enraged. LOL.

He sacs Reaper for Vampire Lord and attacks my defense position Spear Dragon.

I draw Premature Burial and turn my Battle Ox to defense position.

He summons another Spirit Reaper and attacks with V Lord. I activate Waboku. Sweet Waboku protection.

I draw a Berserk Gorilla, turn my Ox to attack position, suicide my Gorilla with V Lord (he's not coming back) and hit his attack position Spirit Reaper with the Ox. I set Ojama Trio.

He sets one monster, one M/T, turns the Reaper to defense position and ends his turn.

I attack his Reaper with Ox and he activates Waboku.

He flips up his Morphing Jar, we both get 5 cards and tributes it for Frost Monarch destroying my Ojama Trio which I chain.

I summon a Panda next turn at 2800ATk and hit his Frost Monarch for the win.

GAME 2

He chooses to go first and I draw Snatch Steal, Change of Heart, Ojama Trio, Spear Dragon and BoM. He sets a monster and 1 M/T and ends his turn.

I draw Giant Trunade, activate it, Change of Heart his Nimble Momonga, summon Spear Dragon and attack with both for 2900 damage. Pretty good first turn hit.

He summons a Gorilla and hits my Spear with Nimble and attacks with Gorilla for 2000 damage.

I Snatch his Gorilla and attack, he actives Gravity Bind and I make the first mistake of the day when I BoM the Gorilla and set a Waboku. I'm an idiot. I did something similar at last years regional. DOH!

He attacks with a Nimble and I activate Waboku, the dumb Gorilla flips up and is destroyed anyway. Yes, I am that stupid. He sets a monster and ends his turn.

I draw PoG and get nothing.

He flips up Morphing Jar and I get a Panda, Ox, Call of the Haunted and an Airknight. He summons Exiled, sets a bunch of M/T cards and equips the Nimble with Mage Power! Yowza! He has a Nimble Momonga at 3500ATK!

I summon a Panda and attack his Exiled for 800LP. It's too little too late and I can't recover and he wins. I compliment him on the Nimble/Mage Power combo. I have to admit, it was pretty funny.

GAME 3

I go to my side deck and put in 2 NoC, a NoE and take out the 3 Gorilla's for 3 Sonic Ducks. I'm hoping to get under his Gravity Bind and hurt him with the Sonic Ducks.

He RoD's my Spear Dragon and hits me with a Nimble.

I Change of Heart his Nimble and tribute it for my Airknight and attack. I set Ojama Trio.

He summons Breaker and suicides with my Airknight.

I draw a Panda, activate Ojama Trio and hit a token.

He summons Injection and pays for her to get rid of my Panda. He's at 1500LP and can't pay for Lily again. I set Fiber Jar.

He tributes Lily for V. Lord and attacks my Fiber Jar.

I get Ojama Trio, Airknight, Panda, Ox and Premature Burial. He sets every card he got with Fiber in his M/T zone.

I get a great top deck when I draw Giant Trunade. I activate it, he chains with Magic Drain and I discard my Premature Burial for Magic Drain. All cards go back to our hands and I summon an Ox to attack for the win.

RECORD 3 - 0

Hey, I'm doing pretty well. I didn't expect to be 3 - 0 so, this is a pleasant surprise.

ROUND 4

Pandas VS Warrior/Control

GAME 1

This turns out to be the round where I make a couple of costly mistakes. Oh well, I've always said there's a difference betwen good players and great players and mistakes can really hurt.

The first mistake I made was choosing to go second. I don't know why I did it, I just had the feeling I would get a good opening hand or something. I don't know what possessed me! I did get a pretty good hand on my first draw. PoG, Gorilla, Cyber, SoRL and Ojama Trio. He activates Confiscation and gets rid of my PoG. So much for going second.

He Change of Hearts my Cyber Jar, flips it and gets Scientist and pays 1000 to get Sanwich, tributes it for Frost Monarch, destroys my M/T cards, removes a light and a dark, summons BLS and I am dead from that point on.

GAME 2

I chose to go first and get Snatch Steal, Jinzo, Ojama Trio, Airknight, and SoRL. I get Heavy Storm for my first draw. I set Ojama Trio and SoRL.

He summons a Mystic Tomato and I Snatch Steal it, tribute it for Airknight, activate Ojama Trio and attack a token.

Then he summons a DD Warrior Lady, sends it to the graveyard and removes a light and a dark for BLS on his second turn!! NO!!!!!!!!!!!!

I should've saved the Snatch Steal. I lose.

RECORD 3 - 1

ROUND 5

Pandas VS Machine

GAME 1

OK, I lost a match. No big deal. I'm still in it. I win the coin toss and chose to go first. I am not going to make the same mistake twice. I get Airknight, Premature Burial, Spear Dragon, Ox and Ojama Trio and draw Change of Heart. Not a bad opening draw. I set the Ojama Trio, summon Spear Dragon and end my turn.

He summons X-Head Cannon and I immediately realize he's running a machine deck based on all the fusion materials for XZ-Tank Cannon. He sets 1 M/T and ends his turn.

I Change of Heart his X-Head and attack with it and Spear Dragon, then tribute his X-Head for my Airknight. That was mean. I like to attack people with their own monsters, it's sort of demoralizing. Then when you can tribute their monster after attacking them with it, that's just adding insult to injury. I set a BoM and end my turn.

He starts looking through his fusion deck and I suspect he has Magical Scientist in his hand. He uses Call of the Haunted to get his X-Head back and then activates Giant Trunade. I chain the BoM to his X-Head and then chain Ojama Trio. He seems to think my chaining the BoM to the Giant Trunade was a mistake because he asks me if I realize what I just did. I told him I knew what I was doing and knew exactly what I did. He summons a Shining Angel and attacks my Airknight. I draw a card and he protests, but I tell him my Airknight did battle damage to him and I get his effect. He gets Z Metal Tank with Shining Angel's effect, tributes both Tank and Cannon for XZ Tank cannon. He sets a M/T card and ends his turn.

I draw a Panda. Great top decking there! I activate Giant Trunade and he chains his Call of the Haunted for some reason beyond me to get a Shining Angel which immediatly goes to his graveyard. Huh? I summon a Panda and attack his XZ Tank Cannon. He gets sort of ticked off at that and can't recover. I win.

GAME 2

He decides to go to his side deck. He looks at his cards for a few minutes, fiddles around with them and then decides not to make any changes after all. He says if he can't win with his deck the way it is, then he can't win. OK with me.

He sets 3 M/T, summons X-Head and plays PoG. That was a little wierd. I wondered why he played PoG after he set and summoned?

I get NoE, Heavy Storm, 2 Spear Dragon, Call of the Haunted and BoM in my first draws. I play Heavy Storm and he gets really irate.
He activates RoD in a chain to my Heavy Storm on his X-Head. I begin to subtract the LP from both of us and he says, "Wait a minute. I'm not finished." I say OK and he chains 2 Limiter Removal, whacking us both for 7200LP damage. I'm thinking this guy's crazy. I summon a Spear Dragon and attack him for the win. It's an OTK for me! WOOT!

I don't know what this guy's deal was. I got the impression he thought his deck was all that and I pretty much shut him down and he didn't like it. He wasn't mean or anything, he just seemed a little cocky. I like defeating cocky people. Keeps them humble. Like me. Ha, ha.

RECORD 4 - 1

ROUND 6

Panda VS Warrior

Well, I come to round 6 with only one loss. Things are looking pretty good! I come to the table and we introduce ourselves and it turns out it's Andrew, aladude85. We chat for a while and count out our side decks and yadda, yadda. Very pleasant, unlike my previous opponent.

He wins the die roll and chooses to go first.

I draw 2 Pandas, Spear Dragon, NoE and Waboku.

He plays Painful Choice. I hate that on the first turn. He offers me Raigeki, Breaker, Magic Drain, DD Warrior Lady and NoC. I think I gave him the Magic Drain. I don't remember. I think that was it. He sets 2 M/T and a monster and ends his turn.

I draw an Ox. I NoE his Magic Drain, summon the Ox and attack his face down Marauding Captain.

He sets another M/T and another monster.

I draw Heavy Storm, activate it and get rid of his Royal Decree (yipes) and an MST. I summon Spear Dragon and attack his face down Mataza the Zapper, then attack directly with the Ox. I'm feeling pretty good now. I've done some damage and he's not really playing very aggressively.

He Premature Burial's his DD Warrior Lady and attacks my defense position Spear Dragon.

I attack his DD Warrior Lady with the OX and he removes them both from play. I set Waboku and a face down Panda.

He NoC's my Panda. Crap. I'm lucky he doesn't have a monster.

I MST his Call of the Haunted and set my Panda.

He plays Heavy Storm and I chain Waboku. He sets a monster and ends his turn.

I think we are both top decking at this point. I don't exactly remember. I draw Giant Trunade and flip up my Panda to attack his face down card. It's a Command Knight with 1900DEF. Ouch. I set Trunade as a bluff and end my turn.

He hits my Panda with his Command Knight.

I draw Ojama Trio!!!!! Man! If I had only draw that card a turn earlier!! I set the Ojama Trio and end my turn.

He draws Reinforcements of the Army and gets another Command Knight and summons her and attacks with both. Suddenly, the tide has turned and I am getting hammered. I'm loosing LP fast and if I don't get something to attack with in my next draw, I'm dead.

I draw and get a monster I can attack with, but not now. It's Jinzo and I lose.

GAME 2

I chose to go first and draw Snatch Steal, Waboku, Ojama Trio, Spear Dragon, NoE and then get another Spear Dragon. I summon the Spear Dragon, set Waboku and the Trio and end my turn.

He plays Heavy Storm and I chain Waboku and the Ojama Trio. He sets a M/T card and ends his turn.

I draw MST and NoE his BoM which he chains to my Spear Dragon. I MST his Call of the Haunted. I attack a token with another Spear Dragon and end my turn.

He activates Painful Choice and I cringe. Here we go. He offers me Compulsory Evacuation Device, Jinzo, BoM, DD Warrior Lady and Magician of Faith. I give him Jinzo because I do not want him to have a light and a dark in his graveyard. We go back and forth, trading LP damage. I keep hitting tokens, he keeps hitting me with stuff and soon we're top decking again. I get an Airknight out and he top decks Exiled Force. He has a Breaker at 1600ATK and I summon an Ox and he Torrential's, Then he top decks a Blade Knight and attacks for the win. Darn that was so close.

RECORD 4 - 2

ROUND 7

Panda VS Warrior (AGAIN)

This is a must win situation for me if I want to stand a chance of finishing in the top 12. It's highly unlikely I'll finish in the top 4, but I am currently ranked 15th and have a good chance of getting into the top 12, maybe even the top 8.

GAME 1

Once again, I sit down to face my 4th Warrior deck of the day. Yawn. I expected this though.

I draw 2 Berserk Gorilla, Snatch Steal, Airknight, Final Attack Orders and then Heavy Storm. I set the Ojama Trio, summon Gorilla and attack his face down card. I forgot what it was.

He draws and plays PoG. He sets 2 M/T cards and a monster.

I draw Premature Burial and activate Heavy Storm, he chains with a Magic Jammer. I tribute the Gorilla for Airknight and he activates Bottomless Trap Hole. That wasn't too good.

He tributes his face down card for Jinzo, removes a light and a dark for BLS and attacks. Oh this sucks so bad. Why didn't they ban BLS when they banned CED? I'm already down to 2600 and he's still at 8000LP. Man, I am tired of this.

I Snatch Steal his BLS and attack Jinzo.

He summons Injection!! MAN! What is up with this!?! He attacks his BLS and boosts Lily, killing his own BLS.

I draw Call of the Haunted and set Cyber Jar and Waboku.

He summons a Blade Knight and attacks my Cyber Jar. I get a Panda and an Ox with Cyber Jar. He gets nothing.

Then I attack and he Call of the Haunted his Jinzo. That's smegging crap. I Premature Burial my Ox, Heart his Jinzo but it's too little too late and he wins.

GAME 2

I go to my side deck and drop in 3 Secret Barrels for the heck of it. Maybe I can catch him with a lot of cards in his hand and do some good burn damage.

I draw Ojama Trio, Cyber Jar, BoM, Heavy Storm, Premature Burial and a Secret Barrel. Well, that's not the best opening hand. I set the Cyber, Trio and Secret Barrel.

He plays PoG and MST's my Secret Barrel which I chain for 1200LP damage. He summons Breaker and attacks my Cyber Jar. I get an Airknight, 2 Waboku, Secret Barrel and a Berserk Gorilla. He gets DD Warrior Lady and doesn't attack.

I set the Secret Barrel, activate the Ojama Trio and attack his DD and he doesn't remove her from play. He wants that light type in the graveyard. He summons TIV and discards, getting rid of the tokens and my Gorilla. The Secret Barrels work really well and I get him down slowly. We Snatch Steal and Call of the Haunted a lot of stuff and trade LP damage for a long time. We were tied at 4100LP for a long time until I managed to get a Panda up to 3300ATK with tokens on the field and got him dowm to 1400LP when I was at 2700. This game is looking pretty good. Then it's not looking too good. He manages to flip his Fiber Jar. I get Ojama Trio, Panda, Ox, Giant Trunade and Premature Burial. He summons Don Zaloog and attacks, taking me down to 1300LP and taking my Giant Trunade out of my hand. Not too bad. I can hang on. I have Ojama Trio and a Panda, so I'm looking pretty good.

I summon the Panda and set the Ojama Trio. Hopefully, I can activate the Ojama Trio and have a 3300ATK monster if he summons another warrior.

Well, he top decks Snatch Steal and it's over. Dang.

FINAL RECORD 4 - 3

Oh well, the day is done and I end up ranked 21 out of 74. That's still in the upper third and I know other duelists who didn't win any games and dropped after the 4th round and some dropped even sooner. A friend of mine goes on and makes it to the top 8 but doesn't go any further.

I learned that my side deck was strong in some areas and weak in others. I also learned that my side deck saved my butt on more than one occasion today and proved that side decks are INVALUABLE IF it is built corectly.

I met a few folks I'd only talked with on line and seen on posts, so that's always cool. We didn't hang out to see who won because we needed to get on home. It was a long day, but fun. Turns out, aladude85, whom I dueled in the 6th round won the event.

As predicted, the top 8 decks were mostly Warrior and Burn with only a zombie deck and my friends wierd whatever deck it is being the unique ones.

TnT will be putting on a few more Regional Events as the year goes on and I will surely be there again. Will the Pandas join me? Only time and the next couple of sets of Yugioh cards will tell. I've been messing around with a Horus deck and a deck based around the Monarchs, so who knows?

Well, that's it for my regional tournament report. Thanks to all who have read this far and thanks for all your emails and PM's and communication!

I tested out a Horus deck using the Traditional Format the following day at our local tournament. See how it faired in my next Tournament Report - Horrible Horus.

Until then, keep dueling and keep winning!!
