I got to the store about half an hour before the tournament started at 4:00. this was my first official Upper Deck tournament, so I was nervous and confused. Then my friend Aiden shows up-well, I wasn’t too surprised because I was the one that told him about it. We had a practice match and he beat the crud out of me. So I was feeling kinda bad about my chances as I went to the first round.
Round 1: Me vs. some little kid who was obviously just getting started
Duel 1: This duel was one of the simplest I have played in a while. I ended up with an archfiend force of terrorking, two infernalqueens, and an archfiend soldier against his wide open field only a couple turns in. I attacked him with everything, he had 300 left, he set a def mon, I attacked it with terrorking-it was something like battle ox-and hammered him with the rest.
Duel 2: Almost a repeat of Duel 1-I hit him hard and fast. He was down and out pretty soon.
So that was how my first official round went. I went to see how Aiden was doing and saw he was up against the store champ. Simply put, Aiden was down and out.
Round 2: Me vs. some kid who kept staring off into space.
Duel 1: I got like the worst opening hand imaginable. I had nothing. Zilch. Zero. Nada. He beat me down pretty fast, and I’m thinking “crap, I’m done.”
Duel 2: Here’s my opening hand: three pandemoniums and two terrorkings. CRUD!! THIS BITES!! I drew, and was fortunate enough to get Swords. I played it, stalling him, and put out one pandemonium. He puts out a monster and ends. I draw, set cyber jar. He summons another monster. I draw and flip cyber jar, and got good stuff!! Yay!! I raigeki’d what he got and hit him with like three archfiend. His turn, he sets 2 s/t’s and ends. I tribute a shadowknight for jinzo and kill him.
Duel 3: Finally! I got a reasonably good hand! And he fell apart against it. It was straight beatdown, and I took him out pretty quick.
Round 3: Me vs. a kid that was eating buffalo wings and bragging about how he could handle spicy food and paid no attention whatsoever to the match.
Duel 1: It took him like 5 minutes just to play his opening move because he was busy yapping his head off about some other game. I was like, “just play!!” finally I got him to actually put cards out. I then realized why he talks so much-it’s his only good strategy, because as a duelist, he suks. He kept doing really stupid things. At one point he had a monster attack me, and it went through. Then he was like, “o wait! Before I attack, I do this!” He started to flip a set s/t over, and I was like, “kid, you’re stupid. The play is over”. That’s just one minor example of how annoying and dumb this kid was. I beat him pretty quick.
Duel 2: just read duel 1 again. It was the same thing.
Now there’s only three duelists left. The computer is randomly selecting who gets a bye. Since one kid already got one, it’s either me or the store champ that gets a free ticket to the finals. I was like, “please be me, please be me, please be me!” but the champ got it, and I had to play the kid that had the last round bye.
Round 4( semi-finals): Me vs. the kid who had the bye.
Duel 1: I had him in the straight archfiend beatdown that I love, and it only took about 7 or 8 turns to blast him.
Duel 2: Again, the archfiends come at him, but this time he wiggles out of it. We end up in a s/t contest, with neither of us having an attacker. Finally I use desrook with megamorph to attack, but he reflects it with magic cylinder and I lose.
Duel 3: This was one heck of a duel. He had 8000 LP to my 1000 at one point. I managed to come back and even up the score. We ended up in the same situation as before, each of us scrambling for an attacker. He had two facedowns when I summoned archfiend soldier and attacked one. It was penguin soldier. Then he plays forceful sentry and sends my archfiend soldier back to my hand. On my turn, it’s 500 LP(me) to 300 LP(him). I play snatch steal to take penguin soldier, change of heart his facedown man eater bug, flip it to destroy itself, and penguin soldier attacks for the win.
Round 5(Finals): me vs. the unbeaten store champ
Duel 1: I had no monsters, just a large array of spell and trap cards. He summoned V-Lord, and we had a little scramble. Every time V-Lord hit the field, I would use a trap and destroy it again. I managed to hold out for a while, but in the end he finally got V-Lord back for good and destroyed me.
Duel 2: I thought I was doing pretty good for a while. Then he summons jinzo, I can’t beat it or destroy it, and I wind up in yata-lock and he wins.
I was so happy- I got 2nd out of 20 in my first tournament! For packs, since you were only allowed one TP4 pack, I got one TP4 and 2 Dark Crisis. I just got useless rares. O well, that’s what they have ebay for.
