Before the Tournament:

It was a chilly day in San Jose, and to my surprise, I found out we were playing outside.  Just great, we were going to play outside in the cold, low 60-degree weather.  I met up with fellow Kaiba Corporation members, infinitekhaos (the Pojo reviewer) and darkjx.  I got my Waboku back from khaos, and sidedecked it.  Then I went in to pay the entrance fee for the tournament.

Feeling lucky, I paid the $10 fee, getting a tournament pack.  In my last tournament pack, I managed to get a Morphing Jar.  Today was no different than the other, as I pulled another one!  Khaos wanted to use it, so I lent it to him, taking his Kuriboh as collateral.  As I scanned the duelists playing pre-tournament games, I noticed an alarming amount were playing Scientist decks, including fellow Kaiba Corp. member, darkjx.  Too bad I hadn’t got my Mask of Restricts yet….

Round 1:

To pair up people in the tournament, we drew random cards from a stack.  If two people drew a matching pair, those people would be paired up for that round.  I drew an “Amazoness Spellcaster,” which Jojo (a duelist I had known before the tournament) also drew.  I really didn’t feel like playing him, and I guess he didn’t either, so he switched his card for a different one.  To his surprise, he ended up playing infinitekhaos!

I was paired up against Matthew, a teenager.  He played a random beatdown deck, with Gagagigos, multiple D.D. Crazy Beasts, and some Summoned Skulls.  First round, I disrupted his hand with Delinquent Duo, and Yata-locked him quick.

Second game, I got my own D.D. Crazy Beast out, removing his Witch of the Black Forest.  Getting out Jinzo, I quickly reduced his life-points to zero.

Infinitekhaos swept Jojo, who was playing his 2 Vampire Lord deck, and darkjx, playing his Magical Scientist deck, swept some unknown kid (poor kid, didn’t know what hit him).

AMW wins 2-0

infinitekhaos wins 2-0

Darkjx wins 2-0

Round 2:

Random pairings again, in addition to some late entrants, and this time I pull [GASP] another little kid.  This kid was a little better than the last.  Playing some kind of Necrofear deck, with Luster Dragons for some reason, he started out with just one facedown card.  I use Dark Hole, and manage to Yata-lock him even though he had five cards in his hand.  He had Cylinders face down (he dropped it on the ground), but for some reason he never activated it.  I finally drew an MST, and it was game.

Second game, he managed to get Necrofear out, removing his Giant Orc, La Jinn, and Opticlops.  By that time, he was at 800 life points.  I drew Swords of Revealing light, luckily, and stalled for two turns.  He didn’t run any M/T removal, so I was able to stall enough to draw a Fiber Jar and reset.  I drew a Witch, and attacked for the game.

Infinitekhaos played Brian, who was playing Scientist, and won 2-1.  In the third game, using Mirage of Nightmare, he gained huge card advantage.  Snatch Steal, Jinzo, and Vampire Lord ended the game, giving khaos the win.  Darkjx got knocked out second round, losing to a hardcore beatdown deck with Spears, Goblins, and Lusters.  His opponent managed to get Delinquent Duo every single opening hand, leaving him with few options every game.

AMW wins 2-0

infinitekhaos wins 2-1

Darkjx loses 2-1

Round 3:

Things started to slow down now, and Round 3 took a while to start up.  I played my first decent opponent for the tournament, Anthony.  We go to the same school, so I knew what deck he playing (Last Turn).  In between rounds, I had managed to get 3 Seven Tools of the Bandit just for Last Turn decks, but, officially, they were not in my sideboard to begin with, so I could not put them in.  I sideboarded in my Ceasefire and Cannon Soldier to try and counter Last Turn.

First duel, through some Solemn Judgements, and attacking, Anthony managed to lower himself to 1400.  He used MST on my facedown Ceasefire, and stupidly, I activated it to lower him to 900, the danger zone for Last Turn decks.  A couple turns later, he flips his Cat of Ill Omen and puts Last Turn on top of his deck.  I had to draw something good, or else it would be game.  I drew…. Snatch Steal!  Snatching his face-up Sinister, I sacrificed for Jinzo, and attacked the face-up Cat of Ill Omen for the game.

The second game is kind of a blur.  All I remember is having a face-up monster on the field, with him in the danger zone again.  He drew his last card, and shook my hand.  Obviously, it wasn’t what he needed.

Infinitekhaos wasn’t doing all so well.  His opponent, the person who knocked darkjx out last round, had again managed to draw Delinquent Duo every single game, first hand.  After some heavy sideboarding, his deck seemed to have the perfect counters to khaos’ deck.

AMW wins 2-0

infinitekhaos loses 2-1

Round 4:

The semi finals, and I get to play David, the person responsible for knocking out khaos AND darkjx.  First game, he DOES NOT draw Delinquent Duo, and sets some cards facedown.  I stall with Spirit Reaper for a couple of turns, until I draw what I need.  Then I unleash an assault, and win the game.

Second duel was definitely more intense than the last.  David, after another heavy-side deck (just what was he putting in all the time?), started off with no disruption again.  Luckily, I drew Forceful Sentry and was able to send back his Nobleman of Crossout.  After a few turns, I used Change of Heart on his facedown Fiber Jar.  Now, instead of waiting until I flip it, he chains Waboku immediately, probably fearing a Jinzo.  I decide not to flip it, wanting card advantage.  He of course, flips it, and gets a nice Delinquent Duo on me, and attacks with Injection Fairy Lily directly.  After another stall with a Spirit Reaper, I manage to get a Don Zaloog facedown, without him attacking it.  I play Swords, and he sacrifices a Sinister for Jinzo.  He was sitting high at 5500, and I had 1900 left.  I drew, and got just what I needed.  First, I used Change on Heart on Jinzo, followed by a Raigeki.  I flipped Don Zaloog up, summoned Breaker and attacked for 5700, barely enough to kill him.  He had a hard time believing at first, and I had to show him the calculations over and over again until he finally realized it was over.

AMW wins 2-0

Round 5:

In the final round, I played a guy named Colin, with a Scientist deck.  I sideboarded in Ceasefire.  First round of the first duel, he pulls off the infamous Scientist combo.  Using Graceful Charity, he discards two Catapult Turtles, plays Cannon Soldier and Last Will, bringing out Magical Scientist. He Monster Reborns his Catapult Turtle, and launched those dastardly 7 fusions at me, along with the Scientist and Turtle, for the game.

Second round was a bit longer, as he did not get a first turn kill.  I used Forceful Sentry to send back his Graceful Charity, and play it out from there.  I eventually get him on the run, with him stalling with Scapegoats and a defense mode Catapult Turtle.  After an attempted Yata-lock by myself, he managed to escape long enough to draw one card.  He set it, and ended.  I tried Yata again, only to be foiled by Scapegoats again!  Luckily, he drew nothing but Catapult Turtles in his next two draws, and I Yata-lock him for the win.

In this last game, he had Cannon Soldier in his opening hand, but only ONE Last Will.  For some reason, I was still alive after five turns, and I felt this game was in my hand.  Eventually, he had no hand, and I had a face-up Sangan with a Dark Hole in hand.  Dark Hole, search for Yata, game.  What an anti-climatic finish to a long and grueling tournament…

Conclusion:  For the fourth week in a row, Kaiba Corporation had taken the sanctioned, Saturday tournament where they played.  I get horrible stuff in my eight packs, only getting a Revival Jam and a Fire Princess.  Colin, the second prizewinner, got a Royal Command and a Riryoku.
