The doors opened at 8am, and I was there at 6:30ish, me and about 6 other guys. We had a good time standing outside freezing until security felt sorry for us and let us inside. We had a few good laughs and a few games in good fun before the doors opened (I won one and lost another) and we watched as more and more people filtered in. Registration/Sign-in went over fine. And so we began the 1st Round. ROUND 1: Gregory Chin -- Exodia Duel 1: He wins. I didn't realize he had Exodia until he had 3 of the five pieces. Too much drawing power and recursions on Witch and Sangan. Duel 2: Side-decked in Card Destruction and Exchange and started the next duel. Got Black Luster Soldier and removed all his monsters. Then attacked with Mystical sheep. 4th turn win. Duel 3: Pretty much the same. I Card Destructioned one of his pieces early while dropping a Light and Dark from my hand at the same time. BLS, lather, rinse and repeat. Match Record 1-0 Okay so the next round took hours to get ready. There were computers problems which ended up losing all of the round 1 information. I wouldn't find out until later that the problem almost cost me a win when they recorded that my opponent won instead of me. 2 hours wait later Round 2 starts. ROUND 2: Anthony Iunni -- Kaiba Structure Deck Duel 1: Okay, so maybe he wan't playing with the strcuture deck excly, but it was pretty close. Nothing really close to a problem. A Luster Dragon #2 and a powered up Spirit Ryu were the best offense he managed. I wiped him out with Buster Blader. Duel 2: He did a lot better this game. He pulled a Lord of D. and Flute combo in his opening hand and got out Ryu Ran and Blue Eyes White Dragon. He wiped out my defense and hit me for 2200 with Ryu Ran. I Ring'd his Lord of D. then he tried to summon a Witch and I Torrential Tributed. I drew a few MSTs to wipe out his face down cards and killed him in a few turns. Match Record: 2-0 ROUND 3: Nigel Williams -- Chaos Control Duel 1: This was it. I knew that this would be the deck that pretty much everyone was running. It's not a hard deck to run, and it's stupid powerful while the restriction list is un-updated. Anyway, I got rolled up and tossed in the trash on the second turn, he got out Jinzo, Don Zaloog and Chaos Emperor Dragon and attacked me directly for 7800. Then he blew up CED for the win. Duel 2: He got out Vampire Lord early and got a stupid amount of Hand Disruption. I had cards to get rid of V-Lord but nothing that would keep it from coming back, (Tribe & Freed). Yata Lock on fourth turn. Match Record: 2-1 ROUND 4: Jonathon Mills -- Eqipped Beatdown Duel 1: So I went from super hard, to super easy. Nothing special here. He spent the whole duel in defense mode, searching for Bubonic Vermin after Bubonic Vermin. I just needed a few monsters out to beat him. Duel 2: He did much better this game. He tributed a Zombyra for a Great Maju Garzett and then Reborned my Dark Magician. If he hadn't summoned Giant Orc before attacking and hitting my Mirror Force he might have had a chance to hold on, but in stead I wiped out all the monsters he had in his hand (and all but one other card too) so he had nothing to protect himself with. Match Record: 3-1 ROUND 5: Alexandre Keamittion -- Control Duel 1: Only having Sinister Serpent as my only monster for the first few turns allowed him to gain advantage quickly with Jinzo. He dropped off a Raigeki and a Riryouk on turns 1 and 2. Both of which would have been peachy. Fortunately he used and Exiled Force to kill Sinister at one point and the next turn I was able to Monster Reborn Exiled Force and unlock my traps. That let me use the Waboku, Ring and Imperial Order. Imperial Order stayed on the field for quite a few turns since I didn't have any really good magic cards to play, so he was stuck with his monsters. Duel 2: Pretty even from the start from the duel. He had Jinzo again, but didn't get the drop offs to help him out this time. I get 5 monsters with a Cyber Jar and he Raigeki'd all of them. Since he dumped Dark and Light mosnters with his Raigeki I got oput Black Lsuter Soldier and hit him directly dropping him to 2300 LP. Next turn he Snatched BLS but I had Cylinder waiting. Match Record: 4-1 ROUND 6: Mike Giamou -- Necrofear I can't even keep track of this match. There were Rings flying all over the place. I blinked and the first duel is over. One second it looked like he was running Yata-Lock, then it was Necrofear. With a few thousand Life Points left he tried to Kamikaze with Archfiend Soldier into Skilled Dark Magician, but I activated Waboku and his feild was cleared. Last game I was down to just BLS and Harpies, he had just pulled Yata but couldn't summon it that turn. I managed to draw Skilled Dark Magician, only the second non-BLS monster I had pulled all game. I attacked with it, then next turn he destroyed it. Fortunately the other mosnter I had gotten earlier was a Light Type. I Harpie'd his Torrential then summoned BLS and hit him for the win. Match Record: 5-1 ROUND 7: Matt Bishop -- Beatdown Control Matt and I had met and hung out for a few hours earlier in the day before everything got started, and we had even dueled too (I had won). He was playing a mix of beatdown and control, focusing on clearing teh feild of monsters with strong ones while disrupting my hand. I'm sure he had a Yata but I never saw it. We traded the first two duels of the match between us. The third was very close, but in the end the match victory went to me. The specifics are a little hazy to me right now. Match Record: 6-1 When the day was over I was quite happy with myself. A 6-1 record at my first regional showing was fantastic, especially since the restrictions weren't updated and I was expecting 239 competitors with 239 Chaos Control decks. Then of course we get all the tie-breaker scores. Nigel (the only one that beat me) ended up going only 5-2 so I didn't get as many points b/c I did better than he did. Then of course there were a few of my opponenents that I know didn't have good records so that didn't help me win any extra tie-breaker points either. Overall final standing: 13th out of 240. As I said, quite happy with myself. A few more tie-breaker points and I would have been in the final eight though. So close and yet so far. And now the token Pros and Cons: PRO 13th place. Woo! Picking up the fusion Sub I needed for my deck. Meeting a lot of really cool people. Placing better than all of the other people that I came from home with. CON The horrbile wait between 1st and 2nd round. The horrible wait almost costing me a win. Stupid computers. The horrible tea that I got at one point from the food court. The horrible fact that 7 out of the final 8 were all running Chaos Control. (Each deck within 5 cards of each other I bet.) Credendo Vides!
