August 16 and 17th Nathan Jochum Hand Control/lockdown HobbyTown Usa (East Park Plaza and Southpoint Mall) Lincoln, NE Entrys: about 40 in each tourny Hey. This is really two tournament reports. There are two stores that hold tournaments near where I live. They are actually both the same stores, just different locations. The first tourny is on Saturday at the SouthPoint, the second on Sunday at East Park. About half the kids at them go to both, the other half you only see at one store. Well, out of curiousity I made a control deck. Added a few of my own ideas, left out some traditional control cards. Actually, I showed up for the first tournament about an hour early, because there were a few key cards I still needed, namely two time seals and a Forceful Sentry. I was able to get the time seals (common), but wasn't able to trade for a forceful until Sunday. For a little background, I don't often get to go to the tournys, because I lead an eventful life, including the shooting sports, trips to various national tournaments in North Carolina, and college getting ready to start. The judges and most players at these tournys know me, because whenever I do play I always have a good showing. Alrighty, on to my deck. Monsters -- 17 Tribute Monsters -- 2 Airknight Parshath x 2 Nontribute Monsters -- 15 Spear Dragon x 2 Goblin Attack Force x 2 Maurading Captain x 2 Witch of the Black Forest Sangan Yata-garasu Spirit Reaper (for stalling in case I don't draw my discard cards) Exiled Force Fiber Jar Mystic Tomato (thinking about taking out. Comments?) Sinister Serpant (thinking about exchanging to second Spirit. ????) Injection Fairy Lily (see sinister serpant) Magic -- 13 Graceful Charity x 2 Mystic Space Typhoon x 2 Harpies Feather Duster Change of Heart Monster Reborn Dark Hole Raikegi Premature Burial Pot of Greed Delinquent Duo The Forceful Sentry (confiscation in first tourny) Trap -- 13 Time Seal x 3 Drop Off x 3 Mirror Force Solemn Judgement Ring of Destruction Imperial Order Call of the Haunted Torrential Tribute (in side deck for first tourny) Magic Cylinder Side Deck Electric Snake x 3 King Tiger Wanghu x 3 \ Infinite Dismissal x 2 / I hate scapegoat decks Barrel Behind the Door Cyber Jar Exchange Snatch Steal United We Stand (was in deck for first tourny) Heavy Storm Mystical Space Typhoon Total Cards -- 43 + 15 = 58 Ok then. As you can see, my goal is to keep him from drawing while using my Airknights to draw extra. Generally, I accomplished my goal exceedingly well. On to the tournament. As I said before, I showed up very early Saturday, which meant I was on the first bracket page, and so had a fairly reasonable seed. Usually the Second bracket is the hardest, and the third generally the easiest. I don't know why this is, but it always seems to be. After trading and dueling for fun for a long hour, the Tournament STARTED!!! First Round -- Nathan vs. Dustin (age 15) Dustin has a lot of good cards, but never seems to be able to put the right ones in his deck. Has a 4 pages full of Ultra Rares in his binder (rich kid) but stinks majorly. Anyway, on to the game. First Duel LP: Me -- 8000, 7000, 4300 LP: Him -- 8000, 6100, 4100, 0 Well, I drew a good hand, and set time seal, drop off, and Imperial Order. Put a Spear Dragon face up and ended turn. I activated Drop Off, and he discarded: Raigeki. Oy, was he mad. He set 1 trap, one monster and ended turn. I drew delinquent duo, played it , activated Time Seal, and played my goblin. I attacked with Goblin straight into a magic cylinder, then attacked with spear. I ended my turn, he did nothing and ended his, I drew. I got United (it was in at that time), put it on Spear Dragon, and he conceded. Second Duel Basically a repeat of first duel. Kept Dropping and Sealing him, until I presented Yata and got him good. Second Round -- Nathan vs. Ty (age 14) Ty came with a lot of hype. He was currently the leader in points at our store, and acted like it. Nobody much liked him, so I had a nice cheering section. First Duel LP: Me -- 8000, 5800 LP: Him -- 8000, 5800, 1800, 0 I couldn't believe that he was the leader. He ran a beatdown, pure and simple. Well, I managed to get both my Maurding Captains out first turn, and for fun equipped one with United we Stand. He used heavy storm, for I had a few traps down (I activated time seal), then change of heart, then played Jirai Gumo. He went Maurading vs. Maurading, then hit with Jirai and managed to call it right. I drew exiled force, played raigeki, then set drop off and hit him for 2200. Well, he couldn't draw, then couldn't again next turn, so it was in the bag. Second Duel LP: Me -- 8000, 7500, 5500 LP: Him -- 8000, 7900, 5000, 3600 Well, he went first and played Kycoo, and only Kycoo. I drew, set drop off and time seal, then played Spear and got 100 damage (YES!!!!). He drew and destroyed my Spear, but for the life of me I can't remember with what. From there, he couldn't draw, and I kept hitting him, with mystic tomato at one point. I got a large rousing cheer for beating him, which kinda upset me, cause he didn't look happy at all, and I hate seeing that. Well, from here on it all pretty much went the same, including Sundays tournament, No one could touch my deck, and I won, undefeated, both days. Felt good. A few interesting things: The kid I played in the Finals both days was the same kid, Austin. He had an anger management problem. Both times I played him, after I beat him he threw his deck across the table, stormed off, and tore up lots of his commons and rares, Another funny thing, everybody knows that the third page is the easiest, so some people hold off entering until the last moment. Well, the judges realized one kid, TY, was doing this so they held him a spot on the first page the second day. And guess who that spot was? ME! So I got the pleasure of getting him out both days. Well, that's about it. Props: HobbyTown for having two stores and holding a tourny in each. Judges for realizing what TY was doing Me for winning both days. Pulling Yata-garasu (makes three) and M.K.O. Jackal from prize packs Slops: Austin (Take an anger management course) Email me at ozmethod_n@hotmail,com with your view on pulling the cards I mentioned, or any cards you feel I should add, or if you want to talk to me in general.
