Andrew Salazar Deck: Disruption Beatdown Wizards of the Coast Tournament Flatirons Mall Denver, Co. 10/11/03 32 Participants Well, this is my second ever Tournament Report, and I am happy to try and add the many records of Pojo.com. This was not a sanctioned tournament, and I was hoping to get some Mag. Force packs, but the store did not have them in stock. A few of my friends had Mag. Force cards, but because of some whining by other competitors, they decided to use their regular decks. Monsters(17): 1x Jinzo (A staple in any beatdown) 3x Spear Dragon ( I enjoy using Spear dragons, the damage they deal can really add up) 2x Don Zaloog (Good to control the hand and set up Yata) 2x Goblin Attack Force (Good quick hit, also keeps Gemini’s from reigning) 1x Spirit Reaper (Unbeatable defense and discard effect, what more could you want?) 1x Injection Fairy Lily (Ends game quickly, except when owned by Kuriboh) 1x Exiled Force (Pretty crucial in this deck, keeps the field open, keeps damage flowin’) 1x Gemini Elf (Just a good consistent beater) 1x Sangan (Breaks out Zaloogs, Yata, Reaper, jars, etc.) 1x Witch of the B.F. (Breaks out Zaloogs, yata, goblin, etc.) 1x Yata-Garasu (Crucial in a control deck) 1x Cyber Jar (Refills my empty hand or field) 1x Fiber Jar (Danger! Eject! Eject!) Magic(16) 2x Mystical Space Typhoon (Keeps m/t zone clear) 1x Monster Reborn(staple) 1x Raigeki(staple) 1x Pot of greed(Staple) 1x Dark Hole(staple) 1x Change of Heart(staple) 1x Swords of Revealing Light(3 Turns can really save a life) 1x Harpies Feather Duster (Duh) 1x Heavy Storm (Keep field open) 1x Premature Burial(Keep offense going) 1x Graceful Charity(One thing about this deck: CONSTANT TOPDECKING!) 1x Confiscation (Control hand, and get peek at hand) 1x Forceful Sentry (Same as above) 1x Delinquent Duo (VERY good at controlling hand) 1x Reinforcement of the Army (Pull out Zaloog, X-force, or GAF) Traps(6): 1x Mirror Force 1x Ring of Destruction 1x Imperial Order 1x Torrential Tribute 1x Call of the Haunted (None of the above really need an explanation, right?) 1x Wobaku (Simple chainable protection) As you may have noticed, their is an obvious difference in my monster/magic trap ratio. I set my deck up like this because this deck depends on keeping control of monsters of the field using magics and traps to back them up, any more monsters would just add weight to the deck. Now, to the tournament. Round 1: Andrew(me) versus Logan M. This was an interesting match, because I underestimated the young kid at first, and he surprised me the first match. Match 1 0-3400 The kid kept catching me off guard, M. Cylinder, raigeki, Harpies duster, and Monster Reborn all took care of me everytime I tried to set up some sort of offense/defense. Match 2. 5600-0 I didn’t screw around on this match. I brought a Don Zaloog to my hand with reinforcements early, and along with delinquent duo and Confiscation, managed to limit his options and finish him with a nice Spear Dragon/ Don Zaloog duo. Match 3. 8000-0 This one was a cake walk. Harpies Duster and Raigeki were in my opening hand, along with a GAF, a Jinzo, and Graceful charity. I used charity to draw monster reborn and discarded jinzo and spirit reaper, followed by the monster reborn to bring out jinzo and a GAF normal summon, both of which worked his lp down to the ground. 1st round record:2-1 Round 2: Andrew(Me) vs. David The next match was a difficult one. It was against my good friend David, who used a hand disruption deck which I built for him. Over time, he perfected the deck, and just before the tournament beat me 3 times in a row. Match one- 0-5200 I dunno how I did it, but I managed to draw 10 magics in a row. David took advantage of this by paying for Imperial order many times. He controlled my whole hand with 1 card. Jinzo and Spirit Reaper made short work of me. Match 2- 7000-0 I drew the ultimate hand. He set 2 m/t’s, and one mon, and ended his turn. I drew forceful sentry, D. Duo, Dark Hole, Yata, Harpies duster. All of those combined? Yata-lock. Match 3- 2200-0 This one was a really close one. Fiber Jar came into play many times, and he had an early 7000-3000 lp lead on me in the first few turns. I followed up with 2 don zaloogs to beat up his hand, and forced him to top deck while Don Zaloog taught him a few lessons about pain. Round 3: Andrew(me) vs. Henry Now, Henry is one of my best friends, and we basically started playing yugioh together. This was an interesting match, because we constantly are going against eachother in tourneys and are about 50-50 in terms of wins. His speed beatdown can be a very frightful thing, it is not easy watching someone choose a card out of a 10 card hand. Match one-2000-0 This one was just back and forth. At one point, I almost yata locked him, but Sinister serpent made sure that it didn’t happen. I did my best to keep offense against him, but he just wouldn’t let me. Eventually, I well placed Spear dragon-Ring of destruction combo managed to finish off the game. Match two-2300-0 I thought I had this one in the bag, with a big lead in the beginning, but he managed to gain a little lp by protecting himself from a snatch-stolen monster. I sacrificed his monster for jinzo, but he x forced it. Eventually, He had only one card facedown, and I had a lily on the field, and I manged to draw....Reinforcement of the army! I quickly grabbed ex. force and let lily rip him apart. Round 4- Me vs. Eric Match 1: 5600-0 Eric was a nice guy. I really didnt want to have to beat him the way I did. But I did anyways. He managed to graceful charity + monster reborn jinzo his first turn, and ended his turn. I pulled a snatch steal and Don Zaloog, so I caught him really good with those 2. He set a monster in facedown defense, I summoned Spear Dragon to destroy what turned out to be a sangan, and finished his lp off. Match 2: 3600-0 Remember, I really didn’t want to have to beat him that way. and I did again, but I really didn’t want to beat him so badly. Really. He started off with a good harpies duster-fairy lil combo to hit me for some lp, but snatch steal, monster reborn (I discarded spear dragon with graceful charity) and a sangan from my hand ended it 2nd turn. After this, the judge decided to stop the swiss rounds and start the top 8 single elimination rounds. I made it to the top 8 as number 1, and was happy to do so. As he announced the pairings, I realized I was to go up against my last friend there, Ryan. Quarterfinals Me vs. Ryan Now, Ryan runs quite a fearsome machine deck, and I knew that he had snuck in some XYZ pieces in there. But I knew ryan’s style, and knew that the right strategy could beat him every time. Match 1: 4500-0 Spear Dragon, Spear Dragon, Spear Dragon. As I brought out this terrible trio, he tried to kill them with mech chaser and cannon soldier, but mirror force kept his monsters gone and harpies duster took out the rest. Match 2: 500-0 Now THIS one was some major luck. He managed to double limiter removal his cannon soldier, and managed to get Jinzo out on me for some major pickin’s. He had only his jinzo on the field, I had nothing, and I topdecked a pot of greed. What else but Dark Hole and Yata? With nothing in his hand, and nothing in his field, the raven made sure he drew....nevermore. Semifinals What the heck! There were 3 other competitors left in the tournament, and everyone of them I had beaten in the swiss rounds! I cracked a joke about how I should be automatically declared 1st, but the judge disagreed, and the semifinals begun, right once again against the young kid who gave me the first loss of the day. Me vs. Logan M. Match 1: 7000-0 This was probably my most strategic match of the day. He brought out a kycoo and set one m/t, I started off with a confiscation. I looked at his hand: Monster Reborn, Hayabusa Knight, 2 axe of despairs. I discarded his hayabusa, and he smiled, thinking I made a mistake. I followed up by snatch stealing his kycoo, and typhooning his facedown (cylinder). I removed his Hayabusa and his cylinder, and used that kycoo combined with Don Zaloog to keep his hand monster-free. Match 2: 8000-0 What a cake walk! Using a forceful sentry, I took out his only non-tribute monster from his hand, and decimated his hand/lp with 2 don zaloogs and a Spirit reaper! He constantly topdecked, and drew nothing to help him. this game ended fast. Finals: Me vs. David I guess it was only fitting that my last 2 matches of the day be against the only people who were able to deal me some losses. Me and David cracked a few jokes, and got started. Now, I would like to give details on how the matches went, but I was so focused on the matches, that I can’t even remember. All I remember is attacking his fiber jar 8 times, and that Spear Dragon’s and GAF’s kept his field clear. When it was all over, I was on top, and managed to win...6 packs plus one super rare from their case. Not too shabby. In my packs, I managed to pull a magic cylinder! The only decent super rare they had was twin headed behemoth, but I’m not greedy, so I took what I could. woohoo, it’s been a while since I won a tournament! Props: For WINNING! Pulling a Magic Cylinder My friends David and Henry getting 2nd and 3rd My friend Ryan pulling a ring of destruction in his pack Getting 2 Duelist League Buster Bladers for a Red Jap Dark magician I paid 1.50 for For the judge actually having the first ever powerful weenie burn deck I’d ever seen Slops: For those dumb kids talking trash because we had mag. force, and then leaving because they got scared To my friend David for only pulling a Ryu senshi To the little kids who forced this tournament into a 5 hour one because they couldn’t keep track of lp.
