Got Mage Power? Ace WOTC Bremerton, WA March 22, 2003 Participants 40+ Prizes: accordance to the number of attendance (5-7 PSV packs for first place) Hey all, its me the “got relinquished” and “got jinzo” guy from before. It took me a while to find a comfortable deck (and thanks to you all who sent me recommendations /tips/emails), but I finally found one thanks to SomeGuy. Yes yes I know impersonation is the greatest form of flattery, but of course I added my own little spin to it to make it somewhat my own. I’m actually proud to say that I’ve used it in three tournaments so far and have won all three while this report is about my fourth one in detail. As it stands, this is my deck thus far (including LON with japanese restrictions in effect): Monsters: 2 Hayabusa Knights (you gotta love these guys) 2 White Magical Hats (Fun card, especially against exodia) 2 Sangan (hmm...I’ll take out my....cyber jar!) 3 Dream Clowns (very reliable with lockdown) 3 Nimble Momonga (great wall) 2 Magician of Faith (change of heart....no wait change of heart again!) 1 Mask of Darkness (Solemn Judgement re-user!) 1 Penguin Soldier (return my magician and mask back to my hand? thanks!) 1 Cyber Jar (nuff said) Magic: 1 Messenger of the Peace (swords wasn’t doing it for me) 1 Raigeki (....) 1 Change of Heart (...) 1 Snatch Steal ( I’ll take that jinzo if you don’t mind) 1 Dark Hole(...) 1 Mage Power (my new favorite card with hayabusa) 2 Axe of Despair ( will take one out once I get a united we stand) 2 Nobleman of Crossout (goodbye man-eater bugs) 1 Heavy Storm (useful in first hand draw) 1 Pot of Greed (...) 1 Monster Reborn (zombie knights!) 1 Premature Burial ( umm...zombie knights?) 1 Scape Goat (pennies make the best scapegoats) Magic: 3 Gravity Binds (best lockdown card) 2 Solemn Judgement (no jinzo for you!) 1 Mirror Force (mwahaha!) 1 Magic cylinder (traded a buttload for this card!) 1 Imperial Order (raigeki?...umm...no!) 1 Call of the Haunted (zombie...oh well you already know) 1 Magic Jammer (ummm....just incase) Well there’s my deck. I don’t depend on clowns as much as I thought I would, but instead have relied heavily on my white magical hats and hayabusa knights and Mage Power! Those monsters alone with MP have been able to dominate any opponent I have out there, especially my knights. Imagine this: I raigeki/ heavy storm the field, summon a hayabusa knight with mage power and an axe with two other m/t’s on the field. GAME OVER! Solemn Judgement is there just for Jinzo. umm...what else....Oh yeah I opted out my SORL for a messenger cause I found myself scrounging for lockdown cards when I really needed them and SORL kept on running out before I could do anything about it. Since most all my monsters fall under the 1500 mark, it was a very good swap out decision. Anyways on to my tourney report. BEFORE THE TOURNEY: Quite by accident, WOTC managers let in way too many players and had their play room filled to the brim with duelists. While waiting in line for the store to open, I tried to find someone who would be willing to trade for a United We Stand or a Mage Power. Luckily there was one person who owned a UWS and one person who owned a mage power. I couldn’t get a hold of the UWS, but did trade my axe of despair for the mage power....why the guy did it I have no idea, but he was happy about the trade nonetheless. I quickly put it into my deck ASAP. The doors finally swung open (figuratively speaking) and sign up was on in progress. Sitting quietly, I viewed the competition, only noticing the handful ‘lite duelists I knew I eventually had to face before the first round came underway. First Round: Ace vs. Dave Surprisingly he wasn’t playing beatdown like he normally would and opted out for his superspeed exodia deck, utilizing three jars of greed, two graceful charities, upstart gobling and one pot of greed as accordance with the japanese restricted list. I’ll admit I was pretty intimidated of his deck (intimidated of exodia in general), but I knew I had my white magical hats to help with the match: 1st Duel: It started off pretty well, imperial ordering a raigeki and call of the haunted a dream clown back into the game with one already out to initiate the lock, but luckily for me, he used gravity bind in his deck making for an easier lockdown in general. Anyways, I initiated it, but unfortunately for me, everytime I destroyed the face down monster, it turned out to be a witch or a sangan and eventually he ended up with all five pieces in under ten turns. 2nd Duel: I was utterly pissed he pulled that crap on me so I went for the gusto. Third turn into the duel, I pulled my favorite combo of heavy storm/raigeki, hayabusa knight with one axe, a mage power and two m/t cards to end it right there 3rd Duel: Since I didn’t reach for my side deck, he didn’t reach for his, so we just started the final duel right after the last (if you must know, I hate side decks, just for the sole reason that they mess up the tempo and chemistry of the cards you have already in there. I side deck only if I really need to). Things started off the same way as the first with a messenger of the peace out and a white magical hat with two dream clowns. I pulled an imperial order on the third turn and then paid for it when I realized it negated my messenger of peace, but that he had a gravity bind out on his side of the field (lucky!). Anyways, I kept switching the clowns and attacked with the magical hats to discard two pieces of exodia into the graveyard, but then he pulled back up soldier! I thought he had won right there, but he said he didn’t and then realized he had a face up WOTBF. I knew he was going to use that to potentially find the last piece of exodia so I didn’t pay for my imperial order, snatch stole his witch set down a hayabusa knight, switched my clowns to destroy his face down magician and then attacked with all. He tried to use a mirror force, but I just ended up solemn judgementing it for the win! Winner: Ace 2-1 I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, I hate exodia! No disrespect to actual players of exodia, but I don’t have a fancy to play it myself is all. I have a full set of my own, but doubt will ever play it. I don’t mind playing against it, but in general, I just don’t like it for the sole fact that the first person to play exodia in my area made me hate it cause he was able to pull it second/ third turn most of the time, and they were all legitimate moves! Luckily he doesn’t play it anymore due to trading. Well I won the match luckily and knew I didn’t have to face anymore more exodia’s in the tournament so it definitely relieved me. All I had to do was get through my friend jonathan and the tourney was mine. When I had to face him was a different matter though. During this time, I traded my extra thousand eyes restrict for another raigeki. I didn’t really need it, but my friend who was way behind in cards did. Next round. 2nd Round: Me vs. this one guy with a hat....I guess. 1st Duel: this guy didn’t use sleeves on his cards so I didn’t really expect much out of him from the get go. Of course, like every other teen newbie I face, he gives me the same speech of “damn I’m awesome, I totally owned my last match. I think I’ll place really high this tournament. What you don’t play beatdown? I think I’ll win this match.” Yup, he gave me the usual egotistical talk I’ve heard at least once every tournament I’ve been in. And props to the younger duelists just for the sole fact that they know when and when not to brag! Anyways, the duel started off and he set one monster in face down position. My turn I used my pot of greed, got a change of heart, used it and it turned out to be a magician of faith! I used its ability to draw two more cards with pot of greed and what did I draw? My ever faithful hayabusa knight and mage power! I ended the game first turn when I summoned my hayabusa knight with two axes, a mage power and two other m/t cards on the field. 2nd Duel: By the time he realized he lost on the first turn and picked his jaw up off the ground he asked me, “what do you usually place in the tourneys?” i told him I usually win these things and after that he then humbled up and basically admitted that he would lose this match already. Despite my hatred for his ego talk earlier, I told him not to give up until the last card is drawn. With that pep talk we headed into the second duel. Too bad it ended up the same way as the first duel, but only on the fourth turn, tossing in a dark hole for good measure to clear the field. Game over. Winner: Ace 4-1 yeah I laugh at anyone who will quite literally brag into my face that they will win and then I demolish them. Yeah, I know its cruel, but you gotta teach them a lesson to deflate some of their ego’s. That’s the sole reason I usually like dueling/training little kids just for the sole fact they learn from their mistakes, I give them a lot of pointers, and they act respectful and appreciative after the duel, knowing they can take what they learn and become better duelists. Definitely a lot better than bragging. During this break I managed to get my second last warrior from another planet! woot! New deck here I come! 3rd Round: Ace vs. Jonathan 1st Duel: As the WOTC manager would put it, this was the battle of the titans! She says that everytime, and all that ends up doing is attracting many spectators to our table to watch us duel. Anyways, I didn’t remember too much of this first duel due to major hunger pains of not eating since the previous day (stupid cereal diet). All I know is that gravity bind kept him in check until he brought out Jinzo. Luckily messenger of peace locked jinzo down until I could get two clowns out and a white magical hat to do their damage. 2nd Duel: We opted for our side deck, him for his level three monsters and me for my “jonathan only side deck (hehe I made a side deck specifically for him).” Unfortunately while searching my bag, I realized that i had left it at my friends house so I rummaged through my spare cards to look for any doubles and only found a couple.....dang it! Oh well I had to make do with what I had so we began the duel. The game ended after the second turn and here’s how. He flipped his cyber jar and we drew five cards. He drew two man eater bugs while I drew two hayabusa knights and placed them in face down defense position. He tributed one bug for jinzo, locking down my mirror force and then destroying one of my knights. He ended his turn. I took advantage of the jinzo situation and snatch stole it. then I change of hearted his man-eater bug, to destroy itself, flipped over my hayabusa knight, equipped it with a mage power with five m/t cards, and then summoned a nimble momonga, attacking with all for the win. Winner: Ace 6-1 Quite surprisingly, this match ended really quickly and without too much trouble. With my nervousness lifted, I felt relieved and strolled to my last two matches with a clear head and a thirst for another win. My friend jeremiah who lost earlier to jonathan faired better this time with a win, along with my friend adam (store manager’s son). During this time I traded my mask of the accursed for a shiny polymerization. Not a bad trade at all. I like shiny. 4th Duel: Ace vs. Ghostbuster 1st Duel: I just call him ghostbuster due to the shirt he was wearing having ghostbuster logo’s slapped across it like no tomorrow. I had seen this guy earlier in previous tourneys but I didn’t remember what he played. I lost all worry when I see him pull out his Joey starter deck (with a few mod’s of course). We shuffled, flipped and the duel was underway. I soon had two dream clowns out due to call of the haunted and premature burial while I made my nimble momonga kamikaze itself on his la jinn to bring the other two out, ending my turn after setting a solemn judgement, mirror force and imperial order. Luckily I had done so since he played raigeki next turn, I countered with imperial order, he seven tooled and I finished the chain with solemn judgement (ouch! 4000 life!). It was worth it though when all his monster ran into my mirror force. I ended up summoning a hayabusa with an axe, flipping my two nimble momonga’s and attacking with all those and my clowns for the win. 2nd Duel: I wanted to finish this fast and hard. Why I was facing this guy in the 4/5 round, I had no clue, but all it did was fustrate me since it took him so long to resolve one turn! around the fourth turn he had two face down monsters so I COH one of them and it ended up being an MOF! I took back my change of heart to take his other face down card and what do you know it was another MOF! I took back my pot of greed, played it, got out a hayabusa with two axes and a mage power to attack for the win. Nuff said. Winner: Ace 8-1 I love that hayabusa/mage power combo so much. This duel fustrated me but after a good couple of practice matches with my good buddy ben, I was back into the positive dueling spirit. I ended up helping a couple of the younger duelists with rules and strategy tips instead of training. Final Round: Ace vs. Adam 1st/2nd duel: Right when the matches were called, you could hear a big groan from the somewhere from the back, which turned out to be Adam! Hehe well just to make a long story short, I swept him. in both duels. Winner: Ace 10-1 I’ll admit straight out the Adam has become a way better duelist since I first met him and for that I gave him mad respect. He ended up getting second place so maybe next week he could gun for 1st since I won’t be there. Good luck adam! Tourney Results: Well, despite not having a spotless record this time around and pulling utter crap in my five PSV packs, it was still a great stress reliever from school that I sorely needed and for that, it was worth the entry fee. My deck ran pretty smoothly though I think it might be close to retirement once I can find three fusion gates for my last warrior deck! woot! Props: For jen putting up with 40 duelists For playing yugioh all day! for mage power! For pojo of course Slops: For my one duel loss For pulling only a best of talwar out of all my packs For giving up red meat for lent and missing out on free philly cheese steaks! boo!
