Tourney Report

March 20, 2003

The Toy Chest, Cary NC

Entry Fee: 5 bucks

Prize: 2 Booster Packs of Choice (but everyone gets 1 Pack just for registering, sweet!)

Last week I did pretty OK, but definitely left with some disappointment in my heart! I got sacked by the Judge and saw that while I liked the theme of my deck, I needed to trim it down a bit to be competitive with the big leaguers. So with help from a fellow Yu-Ghett-Oh! Mate John, I did a little tweaking, and while still larger than most, I saw some improvement in my matches on Wednesday. Now time to take it to the next level!

Ghetto Kaiba Vs. Kien

This was like his first tournament duel and he was brand new to the game. I beat him in like 3 rounds, not knowing that he had a handful of sacrifice monsters like Launcher Spider and the like and no 4 star-or less cards in his deck. So, I just took some time to hook him up with a few cards namely some good Beatdown 4 stars like 7Fish and Harpy’s Bro. and he thought I was the coolest! We played another match and while I beat him, we just went over the basics of dueling slowly and he asked questions on his cards, which I politely answered. I’d rather play with these duelists that just want to play and have fun rather than some of the more cutthroat variety children that it has been my displeasure to run across from time to time. But good going Kien, you’ll get better soon!

Ghetto Kaiba Vs Jacob

If you read last week’s tourney report at all, then you know that Jacob is I think 12 years old, but he is our resident Judge and Trainer, not to mention brutal Yu-Gi-Oh! Player. Last week, he got by me and went on to win the tourney afterwards. I wouldn’t beat myself like I did last week and now with a new vigor, I decided it was time to get it on!

Rd 1

I got a good draw on him this time, but he had that same deck I figured, as he didn’t want me to see his improvements from last week. He plays this card first round called Destiny Board. I had it but evidently I can’t read cuz’ the effect on it is hot. Basically, If you get this card out, each turn afterwards you can search for the other 4 letters, spelling out the word Final, and that is the end of the game, a la Exodia, and with no search monsters to rely on either! I was shook as I tried to get something to get rid of it. I was doing pretty good removing his monsters, but I wasn’t touching his LPs at all. He already had 3 letters out, then he played Messenger of Peace. I think he ran out of monsters to throw at me and this deck specializes in just getting a huge hit in. So I was spared a round enough to sacrifice a WOBForest for my savior, Jinzo! That at least halted the Destiny Board and allowed me time to build up my monsters and eventually win this first ma! tch. I still am in awe of this Destiny board. And knowing Jacob, who is our resident Trainer and Judge, he’s got some more tricks up his sleeve!

Round 2

Almost identical to the first round except I do get the privilege of Change of Hearting a frickin’ Morphing Jar (Tourney edition!) and Sacrificing a choice card for my Jinzo this time. But, he Snatch Steals it from me and Sacs if for his own Summoned Skull. I hold him down with my girl, Maha Valio with an Axe, but he gets that Destiny Board up again, this time with a clear M/T zone to run it through. I get in a few licks, but man it’s too fast for me. Basically you have 4 rounds to beat it or you’re toast. He got the whole thing out and that was round 2.

Final Round, Fight!

I find out the hard way that Jacob has an Exodia/Destiny/Beatdown deck this time. He plays a Gemini Elf up front and goes for my LPs. I get out a Cyber Jar and get one of his Exodia Pieces out on the field. That’s a partial relief as I send it to the Graveyard and get rid of it with Kycoo! But, Jacob has a good defense up again with Messenger of Peace as he waits out and gets yet again Destiny Board! I cannot believe it! So now I have 4 rounds to get him! I have out a Maha Valio with Axe and Kycoo, but can’t attack because of the Messenger of Peace. To do? I manage another Maha onto my field as he gets another piece. I draw a Heavy Storm and save it for a last resort. I don’t want his board going off, but if I Storm him, then I lose my axe and his monsters would simply beat me down to my end. So he has 4 down and doesn’t pay for Messenger. Didn’t know you can do that, but he is the Judge, so cool. I see that if even if I attack, I won’t have enough to kill hi! m. Heart of the Cards baby…..oh my frickin’ grandma’s panties…Raigeki! That is all I needed to see! I get his field clear and then Monster Reborn one of his Summoned Skulls and equip my 2nd Maha with an Axe I was holding for just a play. Can you say 9100 damage in 1 turn! That is straight Heart of the Cards, ladies and gentlemen. Jacob can’t believe it. One more round and he had me for sure! He follows me around the store telling everyone about that play. That was simply awesome!

Ghetto Kaiba Vs Kai think (that’s right)

This is one of the 2 dudes I think is nationally ranked. He and this other cat always win, but they come like once a month and of course, I just got through with the Judge, now I have to play the guy the Judge goes to for help. Ouch! He says he’s sick so I might win. That wasn’t a misprint. This guy so good I can only beat him due to medical reasons. Now if that ain’t bold/cocky/arrogant/truthful all in one statement, what is? It would be bad normally but its probably more fact than fiction. Here is another guy that has new cards I ain’t seen before and I see that I have to invest heavily into the LONightmare series to compete with these guys and their new cards.

Round 1

Sorry, but my notes are kinda scrappy again. When I play good people, I tend to write a whole lot less! He has a Beatdown deck I think, so I go in Def. with good ol’ Cyber Jar up front. He hits it and I get like 3 lvl 4 monsters, a Summoned Skull and Raigeki. Needless to say, next round, I clobbered him! This deck is showing off today! He laughs and now a few other kids are looking at us duel. I think since I beat Jacob, that might have gotten me over the hump as far as cred here goes, but I haven’t beat the pro guys. Kai is one and the other dude, I played in the Finals once, but it was a 1-match duel and I lost. So this guy, there is another kid with curly hair that is awesome and John are the only ones bigwigs I haven’t beat yet. So I have to get this one.

Round 2

So he let me go first again! Sweet and I get a good draw. I like this deck, but since John helped me carve it down 10 cards, I can definitely see a difference. I got a good draw again and long story short, I beat him down with a Jinzo and a Megamorphed Maha Valio after enduring a wailing from his Bazoo’s. This is another card I must possess. It is a Lvl 4 monster with 1600 atk, but you can discard 3 cards from your graveyard and then wham-o! it’s a 2500 no tribute Summoned Skull. He kept beating me down with it until he ran out of cards to pay for its upkeep of strength. I wisely searched my deck for my Kycoo (this is like my favorite card from LON so far, it has saved me a lot recently!) with a sacrificed WOBForest and cleaned out his graveyard so he couldn’t amp them up any more. That cleared the way for a Jinzo sacrifice and ended it with Maha Valio. He showed me some of his cards and they were plain awesome. One I saw was Torrential Tribute and I’ve seen it w! reck shop on fools here today. So I get another notch in my belt and we converse a minute. Like I said, I only have a handful of LON from trades and, like my Destiny Board set, I haven’t really looked at what they do. Please believe that will change tonight when I get home!

Round 3

Ghetto Kaiba Vs Steve-O!

Cool, Steve-O was telling me he had some new cards and he was blasting kids all week with it. Evidently so, cause he had a Gemini Elf in his trading folder! I wipe away the drool and we proceed to battle.

Round 1

As you may know, Steve-O and I played last week and I came out the victor, barely! We get into an old-fashioned grudge match and we are going back and forth with hits, he too holding me back with Bazoo’s. It ends after a few rounds when I play my ultra-sweet Magical Cylinder on one of his Bazoo’s that s juked to 2500, then next round Change of Heart it to hit him along with my girl, Maha Valio! He is in love with that card evidently and we discuss a trade with his Gemini Elf for a sec, but time is winding down and we go ahead and get the 2nd match underway.

Round 2

Again the notes are sketchy, and he starts off with a Mask of Restrict. This baby says "No Tributes" and means it! So I am kinda held off until I can get a Heavy Storm out to clear his backfield and come chugging through with my beasts! So now I am in the finals after 3 very challenging foes. Remember me saying something about the curly-haired dude that was good and how I hated 1-match finals? Well guess what?

Final Match

1 Round-match against Curly-Haired Dude!

The gods must be crazy! I know this was how my good luck would be repaid! Well, its all good as now the whole store is crowding us. He plays this Dark Necrofear deck and I’ve heard of the card, but have no idea what it does. Still the pressure is on and this deck has been good me so far! Let’s get it on!

Final Round, Fight!

Well, I got some awesome equip cards, but nothing to equip them to. Dag! I have a Magician of Faith I could waste, but that would be useless, so I just take a hit my first round. He played a Gemini Elf so it was pretty much a free hit. But as my master plan unfolded, I figured to get in a big hit of my own. I had Maha Valio and a Wall of Illusion now with my MOFaith , Change of Heart, Barrel Dragon and Exchange. So what I did was, play my Wall of Illusion in def. and waited it out. As I hoped, his Gemini Elf attacked my Wall of Illusion, destroying it, but getting sent back into his hand. Sweet, check this out. I played my MoFaith in Defense mode, Change of Hearted a facedown MEBug on his side to destroy itself, put down the magic card I just drew and played Exchange. I then took the sweet Gemini Elf from his hand and he took Maha Valio from me, now realizing that he was defenseless against my next master stroke! He drew a card, and obviously it wasn’t what he ! wanted to get, so he had to put Maha down in Def. Mode. I was counting on that. See, I wanted to COH my Maha back, cuz the magic card I put down was an Axe of Despair, that, with Gemini Elf and another 1800 monster would have been almost game. And I had a MSTyphoon to put down to dispel the axe once he got it back. But as I flipped my Magician to get back my COHeart, he played Magic Jammer, dag! I played Solemn Judgement on that and he then 7Tooled me! So he didn’t have any def. trap cards, just a bunch of disruption! Oh well, that screwed that plan as Gemini did rid the game of my Maha Valio, but as MOFaith was wide open now. I had just reduced my LPs by ½, so I was easy pickings for him to hit me with I think was yet another Bazoo juked up to 2500 after eating cards. He quickly shook my hand and said "You’re good!" and that was enough for the kid! I was glad to get to the finals again, but upset it was a one-rounder! I hope we get the time constraint! s back in line! This is the 2nd time I got screwed in a 1-match final! Oh well, that’s cool, I enjoy the good competition with these guys (and girls!) Plus, I see there are some awesome cards to be had in Labyrinth of Nightmare. I learned a lot and will be back in the lab again, as my Bruticus Deck evolves into a winner! Keep up with me on my site Dual Monsters in Da Hood! and I’ll get back with you and special thanks to everyone that has visited and showed love so far.

Till next week, peace from Ghetto Kaiba!
