Sunshine Roleplayers Tournament Report Miami, Florida, USA Writer: NothingXS Deck: General Discarding Insanity (GDI) Date: Sunday, March 16, 2003 --------------------------------------------------------------------+ --------------------------------------------------------------------+ Well, welcome to my very first tournament report. Tournaments here at Sunshine Roleplayers tend to get a bit weird, but they usually come out as being very entertaining for both old and new faces alike. This particular day, we had the grand total of 3 absolutely new players show up by the names of Matt, Danny and Nick. All of them got to the place a bit early, so I ran them through the basics and helped them out a bit with their decks. I ended up giving them a couple of my spare cards, among them a couple of Whiptail Crows (decent 1650 dark monsters), Malevolent Nuzzlers, a Horn of the Unicorn and some other smaller cards that could help them a bit. Another person I'd never seen before was a newcomer by the name of Alan, who had quite a bit of skill at the game. After some more people showed up (a couple regulars, really), then the tournament was started. --------------------------------------------------------------------+ --------------------------------------------------------------------+ PLAYER RUBDOWNS Andres (me): A discarding / beatdown deck (listed at the end). Nick: Newbie who relies on spurs of luck and good ATK cards. Matt: Interesting mix of magic cards and decent creatures. George: Decided to go with a Pegasus / Joey starter "fusion". Alan: Normal beatdown with a few powerful magics and traps. Danny: A whole bunch of weak cards that didn't amount to much, sadly. Amir: Exodia/Relinquished. Took too long to beat his opponents. Cory: Speed beatdown. This bastard is INSANE. --------------------------------------------------------------------+ --------------------------------------------------------------------+ FIRST ROUND PAIRINGS (1) NICK VS MATT (2) --------------------------------------------------------------------+ Nick starts strong with a 6800-0 victory over Matt, although Matt suddenly turns the tables around in the second duel with a close win (0-3600), and then a final, devastating 0-6300. Matt managed to keep a Summoned Skull with Horn of the Unicorn and Sword of Deep-Seated out for a while, which was the amusing part of the last game. DUEL 1 - 6800 - 0 (NICK) DUEL 2 - 0 - 3600 (MATT) DUEL 3 - 0 - 6300 (MATT) (2) ANDRES VS GEORGE (0) --------------------------------------------------------------------+ The first turn had me draw 2 Robbin' Goblins and two La Jinns, with a couple of Witch's Apprentices thrown in for good measure. He managed to bring out Toon World and his Toon Mermaid and Toon Summoned Skull, but they faltered after I brought out my own Summoned Skull and then Raigeki'd my path to victory. The second duel saw him losing two of his cards early to Delinquent Duo and then some well-placed blows with my Bistro Butcher / Appropriate / 2 Goblins kept him sealed up for a while. He did, however, manage to keep a couple of his monsters out for some good time. DUEL 1 - 6600 - 0 (ANDRES) DUEL 2 - 4400 - 0 (ANDRES) (2) ALAN VS DANNY (0) --------------------------------------------------------------------+ This duel was over quick. Alan completely obliterated Danny for an easy win. DUEL 1 - 8000 - 0 (ALAN) DUEL 2 - 8000 - 0 (ALAN) Cory arrived just slightly late and got the by. Amir arrived quite late and took a loss. STANDINGS: Andres - 2 Starting strong! Alan - 2 Starting strong! Matt - 2 Starting strong! Danny - 0 Not too good... Nick - 1 Not so bad. George - 0 Not too good... Amir - 0 Early bird gets the worm, but you don't! Cory - 2 Barely made it! SUMMARY: The only person we didn't expect to start off strong was Matt, since the regulars know that George tends to perform somewhat well in these tournaments. Amir is already talking crap, and Cory is helping me out with some judging. The newbies are all nice kids willing to learn, so we're having a blast watching them trounce eachother while child-like glee. :) --------------------------------------------------------------------+ --------------------------------------------------------------------+ SECOND ROUND PAIRINGS (0) NICK VS ANDRES (2) --------------------------------------------------------------------+ One of my stranger games, I found my hand lacking of decent material to play around with through most of the two duels. The first duel was quite fast, but the second was a long, grueling process of ensuring that his hand remained locked down for me to be able to secure a win. The first game essentially consisted of me pulling Summoned Skull, Change of Heart, Robbin' Goblin, Delinquent Duo and Pot of Greed, and upon using Pot of Greed, I drew La Jinn and Witch's Apprentice. After I bring out La Jinn and he puts down his defense monster, I steal his face-down for Summoned Skull and hit him hard. The next turn I draw Raigeki, summon Witch's Apprentice, clear the field and take him out. The next duel was me getting back Delinquent Duo back a couple of times with Magician of Faith to keep his hand small while I tried to pull something off. It ended at a somewhat close shave for me when I finally pulled Summoned Skull. DUEL 1 - 0 - 4500 (ANDRES) DUEL 2 - 0 - 1700 (ANDRES) (0) MATT VS GEORGE (2) --------------------------------------------------------------------+ George redeems himself by delivering a sound thrashing to Matt. I was not paying attention to the Duel, but I did get the final scores. DUEL 1 - 0 - 6400 (GEORGE) DUEL 2 - 0 - 8000 (GEORGE) (2) CORY VS ALAN (0) --------------------------------------------------------------------+ Holy mother of... I don't think Alan knew what the hell it was that came and trounced him, but he managed to pull of a 2 - 1 loss, which will eventually give him second place. DUEL 1 - 6000 - 0 (CORY) DUEL 2 - 0 - 3200 (ALAN) DUEL 3 - 6100 - 0 (CORY) (2) AMIR VS DANNY (0) --------------------------------------------------------------------+ One word sums this duel up: BORING. Amir couldn't play an Exodia deck if his life depended on it. He was lucky that he had Gravity Bind out and Danny could do little about it. DUEL 1 - 3450 - 6150 (EXODIA) (AMIR) DUEL 2 - 6650 - 8000 (EXODIA) (AMIR) STANDINGS: Andres - 4 Dominating! Alan - 3 Doing pretty good. Matt - 2 Hang in there... Danny - 0 Ouch. Nick - 1 Hang in there... George - 2 Hang in there... Amir - 2 Hang in there... Cory - 4 Dominating! SUMMARY: One of Amir's HORRID personality faults immediately flies into the face of his opponent -- overconfident cockiness. Danny was not too amused through the entirety of the duel as Amir kept calling me on almost everything he thought he did wrong without realizing that he was a newbie. Nick was a great sport about our duel, so I took note of that for the end of the tournament, where any nice commons that I may have pulled out would likely end up in the newbies' hands... --------------------------------------------------------------------+ --------------------------------------------------------------------+ THIRD ROUND PAIRINGS (2) CORY VS ANDRES (0) --------------------------------------------------------------------+ Cory kept me completely at bay as, yawning, he pulled a very, very interesting combo: Scapegoat + Jinzo + United We Stand. I think this was the duel in which I died the fastest in my whole life. The second duel was even faster, as this time, even though I shuffled his deck thoroughly, this was his damn starting hand. The trouncings were so efficient that my hand mattered little -- he had Imperial Order out which negated a Raigeki, Monster Reborn and Pot of Greed at various points in the duel. DUEL 1 - 6200 - 0 (CORY) DUEL 2 - 8000 - 0 (CORY) (0) MATT VS ALAN (2) --------------------------------------------------------------------+ Matt's lifepoints waned slowly from 8000 to 0 in 8 attacks from Alan's superior force. The next duel was much quicker. DUEL 1 - 0 - 8000 (ALAN) DUEL 2 - 0 - 8000 (ALAN) (2) NICK VS DANNY (0) --------------------------------------------------------------------+ Newbie fiiiight! Nick managed to make it away nearly unscathed, twice making it through with 7000+ LP. DUEL 1 - 7000 - 0 (NICK) DUEL 2 - 7400 - 0 (NICK) (2) AMIR VS GEORGE (0) --------------------------------------------------------------------+ Another boring Exodia duel. This time, however, Amir finally pulled off a decent duel and locked George down and pulled Exodia fairly quick. DUEL 1 - 4600 - 8000 (EXODIA) (AMIR) DUEL 2 - 3950 - 2550 (EXODIA) (AMIR) STANDINGS: Andres - 4 Not too bad. TIED: 3RD Alan - 5 Pretty good! 2ND Matt - 2 Hang in there... TIED: 6TH Danny - 0 Ouch. LAST Nick - 3 Hang in there... 5TH George - 2 Hang in there... TIED: 6TH Amir - 4 Not too bad. TIED: 3RD Cory - 6 Dominating! 1ST SUMMARY: George has to suffer through Amir's merciless, endless taunting while Cory obliterates me, although we just snicker about it after the duel and comment on combos. Alan secures a win fast with Matt and almost immediately proceeds to teach him some tricks of the trade for him to use later in the tournament. --------------------------------------------------------------------+ --------------------------------------------------------------------+ FINAL ROUND PAIRINGS (2) ALAN VS ANDRES (1) --------------------------------------------------------------------+ Only one word can explain this match: AWESOME. The first duel was a very quick win on Alan's part, since for some reason I got absolutely NO usable cards in my first hand (Mystical Space Typhoon, Summoned Skull, Cosmo Queen, Malevolent Nuzzler, Witch's Apprentice). The next duel, however, I entirely pulled out of somewhere deep between my buttocks -- I waited his 4 monsters and SorL out with only a Bistro Butcher and Summoned Skull out on the field. As soon as I notice him switch ALL his monsters to defense before ending his turn, I move my Summoned Skull and set my recently drawn monster out -- Cyber Jar! As he apparently decides against using Curse of Fiend, he leaves his own monsters in defense and I flip Cyber Jar. Lucky me! I draw a whole slew of level-4 attack cards, Giant Trunade, Monster Reborn and my favorite -- Raigeki!! I blow up his cards, make his Mirror Force go away and attack in a final outburst of insanity to reduce him to 0. We laughed after this, played again and I got severely trounced again in little to no time. I still that if he hadn't kept his Imperial Order out on the field in the second duel for so long, he might have won the match 2-0, but I'm thankful for that not happening. DUEL 1 - 8000 - 0 (ALAN) DUEL 2 - 0 - 1450 (ANDRES) DUEL 3 - 7300 - 0 (ALAN) (2) CORY VS AMIR (0) --------------------------------------------------------------------+ All Amir needed to shut the hell up and stop bragging was a complete and utterly severe trouncing from Cory. The second game seemed very close, but in reality it was simply Cory commiting suicide time and time again to try and get some better cards. DUEL 1 - 5900 - 0 (CORY) DUEL 2 - 1450 - 0 (CORY) (2) MATT VS DANNY (0) --------------------------------------------------------------------+ Matt has a very, very close duel with Danny in the first game, and wins, and then severely trounces Danny in the next duel. I feel a bit disappointed, since Danny didn't win at all, but encouraging words do cheer him up a bit. He seems determined to get more cards so that I can build him a bit more competitive sort of deck for the next game. DUEL 1 - 1750 - 0 (MATT) DUEL 2 - 8000 - 0 (MATT) (0) NICK VS GEORGE (2) --------------------------------------------------------------------+ George and Nick keep slapping each other around here and there for a hell of a lot of small damage, but in the end, George seems a hell of a lot better at keeping up at the slapping game. DUEL 1 - 0 - 6400 (GEORGE) DUEL 2 - 0 - 6100 (GEORGE) STANDINGS: Andres - 5 Finished 3RD! Alan - 7 Finished 2ND! Matt - 4 TIED: 4TH Danny - 0 Finished 8TH. Nick - 3 Finished 7TH. George - 4 TIED: 4TH Amir - 4 TIED: 4TH Cory - 6 Finished 1ST! --------------------------------------------------------------------+ --------------------------------------------------------------------+ AFTERMATH Apparently, Joe seems to have scored the game in a somewhat different way than I had, and so me, Amir, Matt and George were considered to be tied for 4TH and since some people already had to leave, a tie breaking single-elimination round was out of the question, and we instead did percentages. Since I beat Alan once, I made away with 3rd place. Matt had to play Alan and George, both who performed quite well, so he took fourth home. George both 5th, with Amir taking 6th for poor sportsmanship, which mattered little since neither were getting boosters anyways. Amir whined ENDLESSLY about not getting 3rd place when he believe to have performed MUCH better than the other better-placing people, but Joe made it quite clear to him (and his annoying-as-hell father) that he had not made it as far because, not only did he arrive late, but the only people he beat were the newbies. His dad claims they won't come back. Amen to that -- please stay away! And so it ends up like this: --------------------------------------------------------------------+ Cory - 1ST - 7 PACKS Alan - 2ND - 5 PACKS Andres - 3RD - 2 PACKS Matt - 4TH - 2 PACKS George - 5TH - 0 PACKS Amir - 6TH - 0 PACKS Nick - 7TH - 0 PACKS Danny - 8TH - 0 PACKS --------------------------------------------------------------------+ Cory pulled Gemini Elf in one of his LoN packs, as well as a couple of Ultra Rares. Alan pulled an Ultra Rare, Kycoo and another one of the Spirit Message cards, now he has 3 of the letters. I pulled a super rare, De-Fusion, which served as trading bait with George to get me a Graceful Charity. Matt pulled out Magic Cylinder and another nice super rare. And on to the classic props and slops... Props: --------------------------------------------------------------------+ - To Matt for doing so damn well in his first tournament. - To all the newbies for being good sports. - To Cory for helping out and pulling Gemini Elf. - To Matt for pulling Magic Cylinder. - To good ol' Joe for telling Amir's damned dad to STFU. - To good ol' Joe for telling ME to STFU. ;) - To me for getting good trading bait. *pats his Graceful Charity* - To George for trading me that Graceful Charity. - To everyone that showed up for their support. - To my aunt Raquel and uncle Dan for taking me to the tournament. - To my uncle Gus for picking me up. Slops: --------------------------------------------------------------------+ - To Amir and his father for being sore losers. - To Danny not being able to pull off a win... Wish you better luck for next time! - To me for not winning first - To whoever stole Danny's Change of Heart. Thanks for reading through! The deck is at the end of the whole file because it gets boring to read through the deck at the beginning, sometimes. It could use mass-magic removal, but I'm somewhat on a budget. I just hope I can get Harpie's Feather Duster soon... It also has a The Bistro Butcher / Appropriate combo that seems to keep helping me out. Pair that with Robbin' Goblins and I can force my opponent's deck into the grave! --------------------------------------------------------------------+ NORMAL MONSTERS (3) La Jinn the Mystical Genie of the Lamp (x3) (4/Dark/Fiend/1800/1000) (SDK) EFFECT MONSTERS (13) The Bistro Butcher (x3) (4/Effect/Dark/Fiend/1800/1000) (MRD) Witch's Apprentice (x3) (2/Effect/Dark/Spellcaster/550/500) (MRD) Trap Master (x3) (3/Effect/Earth/Warrior/500/1100) (SDK) Magician of Faith (x2) (2/Effect/Light/Spellcaster/300/400) (MRD) Man-Eater Bug (x2) (2/Effect/Earth/Insect/450/600) (SDY) Cyber Jar (3/Effect/Dark/Rock/900/900) (MRL) TRIBUTE MONSTERS (4) Summoned Skull (x3) (6/Dark/Fiend/2500/1200) (SDY) Cosmo Queen (8/Dark/Spellcaster/2900/2450) (MP1) MAGIC (14) Malevolent Nuzzler (x2) (Equip Magic) (MRL) Mystic Plasma Zone (x2) (Field Magic) (MRL) Raigeki (Magic) (LOB) Dark Hole (Magic) (SDK) Card Destruction (Magic) (SDY) Giant Trunade (Magic) (MRL) Soul Exchange (Magic) (SDY) Monster Reborn (Magic) (SDK) Delinquent Duo (Magic) (MRL) Confiscation (Magic) (MRL) Pot of Greed (Magic) (LOB) Change of Heart (Magic) (SDK) TRAP (7) Robbin' Goblin (x3) (Continuous Trap) (MRD) Trap Hole (x2) (Trap) (SDK) Appropriate (x2) (Continuous Trap) (PSV) --------------------------------------------------------------------+ After the game I simply added Graceful Charity without removing any of the cards, simply because it wouldn't be necessary with how good Graceful Charity is.
