Deck Name: Chain Burn My Name: Raymond Babbitt Location: Past Time, Orem, Utah This is my first attempt at a tournament report so don’t be surprised if it’s a little thin on details. :) Well, here goes! First, my deck: Critters --------- Morphing Jar (anti-Exodia / thin deck) Jinzo (beatdown even with Gravity Bind out) Sinister Serpent (ongoing block and discard for Magic Jammer and Tribute to the Doomed) Cyber Jar (defense / thin deck) 3x Nimble Momunga (Killer Squirrels! / thin deck / early Jinzo) 2x Goblin Attack Force (mix up the strategy a little / works well with side deck) 2x Jinzo #7 (direct damage / use with United We Stand and Mage Power) 2x Amazon Archer (use with Scapegoats for the big hurt) Magic Cards --------------- 3x Chain Energy (great first turn burner / great meta game card) 3x Scapegoats (defense / burn with Amazon Archer) 2x Giant Trunade (eliminate traps for a turn / use with Chain Energy and Swords) Heavy Storm Harpies Feather Duster United We Stand (great with Scapegoats) Mage Power 2x Graceful Charity (thin deck) Pot of Greed (thin deck) Dark Hole Raigeki Swords of Revealing Light Change of Heart Trap Cards -------------- 2x Magic Jammer (protect all of my permanent magic/trap cards) Imperial Order (ditto) 3x Gravity Bind Mirror Force Skull Lair (great stall card) Magic Cylinder Total: 41 cards Side Deck ------------ 2x 7 Colored Fish 3x Kycoo the Ghost Destroyer 3x Bazoo the Soul Eater 2x Tribute to the Doomed 2x Nobleman of Crossout 2x 7 Tools of the Bandit Giant Trunade The basic strategy is burn, burn and burn. I have a sideboard that transforms the deck into a beatdown for use against people who know my deck as well as I (and the regulars all do) as an element of surprise, which works fairly well, but I didn’t use it today. The tournament was at Past Times in Orem, Utah. The format is best 2-out-of-3 matches per round. Cost is $4 and every player gets a pack that they pick up after losing. The first and second place players get three packs each. Ok, now for the report: Round #1 – Me vs. Jason Jason is a really nice kid who was playing a standard beatdown deck. However, my deck does well against beatdown and he had insufficient magic/trap removal. I started off with a Heavy Storm followed by Dark Hole and attacking with my Amazon Archer. I then set a Gravity Bind to hold off the 1800 ATK monster he played on his turn. Jinzo then made an appearance and I laid down the smack for another 600 damage. Jinzo kept the field cleared while I eliminated the rest of his life points will smaller monsters. First Match: 1-0 Me: 8000 Him: 8000 – 6600 – 6000 – 4400 – 1800 – 0 The second match I got out an early Gravity Bind for protection and then I whacked him with a Scapegoat sporting a United We Stand while my Goblin Attack Force cleared the way. I played Chain Energy and he lost another 1000 points setting his defenses, but I managed to squish his defenses and cleared him out a couple of turns later. Second Match: 2-0 Me: 8000 – 7500 Him: 8000 – 4000 – 3000 – 200 – 0 Round #2 – Me vs. Julio Julio was also playing a beatdown, so this round worked similar to the last. I started out playing a Chain Energy and setting a Killer Squirrel. He took 500 just getting down a monster and then he decided to run down the squirrels. He took a total of 1500 damage before he managed to get rid of the Chain Energy, but he was playing with too many tribute monsters which caused him hand jam after I cleared out his defenses (I actually hit him for a couple of turns with a Morphing Jar and Jinzo #7 before he could defend himself again). I’m uncertain how I damaged him next, but I got out another Chain Energy and he burned himself to death on it. The only damage I took this match was from my own Chain Energy. First Match: 1-0 Me: 8000 – 9000 – 8000 – 9000 – 10000 – 9500 – 9000 – 8500 – 8000 – 7500 – 7000 – 6500 Him: 8000 – 7500 – 6500 – 5300 – 4100 – 1700 – 700 – 200 – 0 The second match I got out two Chain Energy on the first turn, so everything we played after that cost 1000 life points per card. He pretty much burned himself to death while I defended with Gravity Bind. He took 5000 damage just playing cards before I played Amazon Archer and fired some Scapegoats at him. The following turn I played another monster and fired it and the archer at him to finish the game. He actually whacked me once with a Witch of the Dark Forest, but all the other damage I did to myself through the Chain Energy. Second Match: 2-0 Me: 8000 – 7000 – 6000 – 4900 – 3900 – 2900 – 1900 Him: 8000 – 7000 – 5000 – 4000 – 3000 – 600 – 0 Round #3 – Me vs. Randy Randy is a regular and has won a number of tournaments here with a Beatdown/Exodia deck. He’s changed his deck recently to an Air Knight of Parshnath (sp?) and Spear Dragon variation that gave me fits. The first match I got out a first round Chain Energy, but he destroyed my defenses and whacked me with a Spear Dragon. I didn’t draw a Gravity Bind and he was able to cruise over my defenses with his knight, dragon and Ha Des, so the Chain Energy actually hurt more than it helped (notice how I did about 2000 damage to myself from the Chain Energy toward the end). I actually played a Change of Heart on his Ha Des and smacked him once, but toward the end he beat me by flipping his own Fiber Jar and smacking me with a Cyber Jar that he affixed a Mage Power to after setting the other cards from his hand. First Match: 0-1 Me: 8000 – 6100 – 5600 – 3700 – 3200 – 2700 – 2200 – 1700 – 0 Him: 8000 – 7500 – 7000 – 6500 – 6000 – 5500 – 4450 – 3950 – 2950 – 2450 – 1950 – 1450 The second match went much better for me. I got out an Imperial Order which stopped his Heavy Storm and blocked his attacks for a couple of turns before popping a Cyber Jar and playing a couple of Chain Energy. He pounded me pretty sever for a turn with a souped up Air Knight, but I managed to get through with a couple of smaller hits before finishing him with the archer/goats. Second Match: 1-1 Me: 8000 – 7300 – 4400 Him: 8000 – 7000 – 5000 – 4200 – 2900 – 2100 – 0 The final match Randy burned himself pretty harsh on my Chain Energy as I was able to protect it with my Imperial Order. He did get out Ha Des who whacked my Jinzo, and toward the end he cleared away my defenses and laid down some smack until I got out a Gravity Bind and hit him for a couple of turns with a Jinzo #7 powered with Mage Power. Third Match: 2-1 Me: 8000 – 7500 – 7450 – 5050 – 7450 – 6950 – 6950 – 5050 – 3450 Him: 8000 – 7500 – 7000 – 6500 – 6000 – 5000 – 4500 – 3500 – 1500 – 0 Round #4 – Me vs. Hector This round brought us to the Final Four, so I was pretty happy. Whoever won this would be guaranteed first or second play and three boosters. Hector has a Beatdown/Exodia deck with Kycoos, Bazoos, Spear Dragons and Yata Garasu. I didn’t know Exodia was in there until the second match, however. First match he ran over my squirrel, giving me 1000 life. I then got out Jinzo, smacked his Kycoo and played Chain Energy. He burned for a couple of turns before he could get rid of it, but he played an Imperial Order and burned on it for several turns before he couldn’t pay for it any longer. I played a Chain Energy while he had the Order going, so he burned to death on the chain and my Jinzo #7. First Match: 1-0 Me: 8000 – 9000 – 8500 – 8000 – 7500 – 7000 – 6500 Him: 8000 – 7400 – 6900 – 6400 – 5900 – 5400 – 4900 – 4400 – 3700 – 2600 – 1900 – 1400 – 700 – 200 – 0 I thought I had him in the second match, but I didn’t count on Exodia. He managed to clear my creatures out and left me with only Chain Energy on the field and three cards in my hand (a Giant Trunade, Harpies Feather Duster and something else). He played Yata Garasu and kept me in the lock for several turns, but every turn he had to pay 500 life points to get the Yata down and I only took 200 in damage. He did this for several turns and managed to do this for several turns before he played Premature Burial to get out a Goblin Attack Force and Yata at the same time. I used Harpies on his Premature Burial, but he got a Kycoo out putting him at 200 life points and smacked me down to 800 life points. My next draw (I had drawn all of maybe five cards by this time) was a Gravity Bind, so I played Giant Trunade (costing me 500 to the Chain Energy), set the Gravity Bind, and replayed Chain Energy. I had no monsters and I knew if I didn’t put out Chain Energy again that he’d kill me with Yata Garasu. He had drawn a lot of cards by this time, so I thought I would win through deck elimination. Unfortunately, I didn’t know he had Exodia in there, so we kept drawing and discarding until he drew Exodia and won. Second Match: 1-1 Me: 8000 – 7500 – 7300 – 7100 – 6900 – 6700 – 4200 – 4000 – 3500 – 3300 – 800 – 300 Him: 8000 – 7500 – 7000 – 6500 – 6000 – 5500 – 5000 – 4500 – 4000 – 3500 – 2200 – 1700 – 1200 – 700 – 200 Final match, so the heat was on. My initial draw was a lot of magic/trap cards and my first draw didn’t help. I got a first turn Chain Energy and set a Scapegoats, but he played a Spear Dragon on his first turn and laid down the smack. He cleared my field and managed to get out five creatures through various means (Cyber Jar + Premature Burial for his Jinzo + Monster Reborn for my Jinzo). I kept him at bay with some Scapegoats as blocks, and then I stole my Jinzo back with Change of Heart and did a suicide run his Jinzo. I made a good showing, but he overwhelmed me with one last big smack. Final Match: 1-2 Me: 8000 – 6100 – 4900 – 4700 – 4400 – 4200 – 4000 – 0 Him: 8000 – 7500 – 7000 – 6500 – 5700 – 4400 – 2900 – 2400 So, I got third place (the guy Hector played for the final had a bye while we played) and one booster. C’est la vie. It was fun and third is respectable. I can’t say as how I have any “props/slops.” Ian has a great store and runs a great tournament. All of the entrants were good sports and it was fun.
