TOURNAMENT REPORT

This was the first tournament for which I wrote a report, as well as the first time I’ve ever used this deck.  Tournaments where I play are single elimination, each round is played in 2-out-of-3 Matches, prizes are 3 boosters for the winner (Pharaonic Guardian), 2 for the other finalist, and 1 for everyone else.  Entry is $6.30, and Non-Upper Deck cards (Japanese, God Cards, etc.) are not allowed.  Now, onto the Report:

ROUND 1:

Andy (Me) v. Greg

Game 1:

ANDY: 8000

GREG: 8000-7000-2000-1500-1000-800-0

Winner: Me

As you can see, the first game was a shutout in my favor.  This guy was alright- he ran a Beatdown, except he had a lot of counters (Magic Jammer and Seven Tools of the Bandit), and these slowed him down more than they did me.  Anyway, I tried doing My Graverobber-Barrel combo, but he played STOB on Graverobber, bringing him down to 7000.  I played Toll, and for sake of keeping his life points, he refused to attack, building up a few monsters in the meantime.  This gave me all the time I needed to pull my wonderfully executed (If I do say so, myself) Ring-Barrel combo, killing his Summoned Skull while flinging 5000 points of direct damage at him and nothing at me.  I flipped my Poison Mummy to bring him down to 1500, used Book of Moon to put it back face-down, used it again, then did 200 overhead when he used his White Magical Hat to attack one of my Cobra Tokens (He didn’t realize it had 1200 DEF).  Then, I summoned Cannon Soldier and fired off both it and the token for the win.

Game 2:

ANDY: 8000-6500

GREG: 8000-6000-4600-0

Winner: Me

Greg actually hit me for some damage this time, using a Princess of Tsurugi while I had 3 Magic/Trap on the field.  But, that was later in the game.  I started off by pulling off my Graverobber-Barrel Combo 2nd Turn: I took a Graceful Charity from his Graveyard, played it, and barreled him the 2000 I would have taken.  I also played Toll and set one of my trusty Poison Mummy’s.  On his turn, he tried attacking it with the Princess of Tsurugi he flipped up to deal me that 1500 I mentioned earlier.  He had to pay 500 to attack, and then took 900 more from the point disadvantage.  I set two traps face-down on my turn (you’ll find out what they were in just a second), but he used Dark Hole, summoned Bazoo the Soul Eater, and removed 3 cards.  Then, he attacked, and I activated my 2 face-down cards in response.  What were they?  None other than Ring and Barrel!  He took 5000 damage (“Look familiar?” I asked him.), costing him the game.

Now I was on to Round 2, and little did I know, I was in for one of the most challenging Matches I’ve ever played.

ROUND 2:

Andy v. Matt

Game 1:

ANDY: 8000-5700-6700-6300-7300-8300-9300-7000

MATT: 8000-7000-6200-3900-1600-0

Winner: Me

Now, Matt was good.  He ran what I will definitely dub the best Warrior Deck I’ve ever seen.  First turn he played Confiscation or Delinquent Duo (I forget which), and played Reinforcement of the Army, allowing him to lay down 2 Marauding Captain first turn.  He then played Charity and ditched a Goblin Attack Force and something else, Monster Reborn-ed the Goblin Attack Force, and ended his turn, leaving a nearly invincible strike team for me to deal with.  I set Serpentine princess, Book of Moon, and Ring of Destruction on my turn.  He attacked the Princess with a Marauding Captain and took 800 overhead, then attacked with Goblin, on which I played Book of moon to negate the attack, forcing him to end his turn.  I didn’t do much on my next turn- Sinister Serpent in defense, that was it.  He played Nobleman of Crossout on it (ouch…).  He flipped his Goblin back face-up, and attacked with it, at which point I used Ring of Destruction to negate the attack and kill the goblin.  We both took 2300.  On my next turn, I set Gravity Bind and also played Raigeki to wipe out his Marauding Captains.  Anyway, on his turn, he used Snatch Steal to take my Serpentine Princess.  I used Gravity Bind then, just to be safe.  He got a facial expression that clearly portrayed I had him locked, at least for the time being.  He summoned Injection Fairy Lily, and attacked me directly WITHOUT pumping it up.  He then ended his turn, and I gained 1000 from snatch steal.  I set Imperial order and ended my turn.  The next few turns were pretty boring- I used imperial order once, negating the 1000 life points I would have gained that turn, but refused to pay Imperial Order’s upkeep the first chance I got.  That turn, I set my second Ring.  On his turn, He summoned another Goblin Attack force, and I saw the perfect opportunity to use Ring.  He had 1600 left at this point, while I had 7000.  On my turn, I drew the card I needed to win.  I set 2 traps face-down (sound familiar?), and ended my turn.  Again, he could do nothing, and on My turn, I activated Graverobber, stole a Pot of Greed he had played, used it myself, and Barreled him the damage in order to win the game.

Game 2:

ANDY: 8000-7000-2600-0

MATT: 8000-7000-5000-4200

Winner: Matt

Matt got a better draw than I did, apparently, and he beat me without much “barrel peril.”  He played Delinquent Duo first turn and summoned Goblin Attack Force.  On my turn, I set Graverobber and Barrel, as well as a monster (I forget what).  He killed it off on his turn, playing no other monsters.  On my turn, I played my Graverobber, taking his Delinquent Duo (for lack of anything else), and played it, barreling him the damage, as usual.  However, the cost brought me down to 7000.  I discarded his Summoned Skull, and he discarded a Raigeki.  On his turn, he Monster Reborn-ed the Summoned Skull.  Somehow, I don’t remember exactly, he managed to hit me for damage enough to bring me down to 2600.  I played a Serpentine Princess in defense, which a marauding Captain probably ran into, ‘cause he took 800.  Then, though, he attacked with some other stuff for the win.  We were tied now- one win each- and had to play a third game.

Game 3:

ANDY: 8000

MATT: 8000-3400-2900-0

Winner: Me

This game was a shutout, but one that isn’t as clear in my memory as I’d like.  I chose to go first, and first turn, I set my Ring of Destruction, Barrel Behind the Door, and a monster.  On his turn, he played a Goblin Attack Force, but I pulled my Ring-Barrel Combo to send 4600 damage his way.  On my turn, I summoned Cannon Soldier and fired off the monster I had played the turn before.  On his turn, he could only come up with a trap- no monsters.  So, on my turn I played the Harpie’s Featherduster I had been saving, getting rid of his Magic Cylinder.  I played Monster Reborn, got his Goblin Attack Force, and attacked him with both for the win.

I had won the second round, and due to the smaller-than-normal turnout, I was on to the Quarterfinals!

ROUND 3:

Andy v. Adam

Game 1:

ANDY: 8000-6400-4400-3900-3800-2200-1700-0

ADAM: 8000-6000-5500-5000-3600

Winner: Adam

Adam had a great Beatdown deck, to be honest, and I would have won, were it not for his surprise Cannon Soldier.  Anyway, first turn he played Spear Dragon, and on my turn, I set Cobra Jar and my old favorite combo: Ring of Destruction and Barrel Behind the Door.  One problem: he played Mystical Space Typhoon on Ring as soon as I set it, leaving me only with my feeble Cobra Jar (300 DEF) and my now-useless Barrel…well, that was until I set Graverobber, which I had planned to use in combination with my NEXT Barrel, not this one.  Anyway, he set one trap, attacked my Cobra Jar with his Spear Dragon and dealt me 1600.  On my turn, I played Toll and used my Graverobber-Barrel Combo, using his MST on his sole face-down card.  It turned out to be Imperial order, and he activated it, but he still took the 2000 damage and I had no other magic cards (except for Toll), so it didn’t much matter.  I fired off the snake token for cannon soldier to bring him down to 5500, then I set Poison mummy in defense.  He attacked it with spear on his turn, and I took 100, he took 500, then managed to hit me for 1600 more.  I got in a direct hit with cannon soldier, but then he pummeled me with various other stuff for the win.

Game 2:

ANDY: 8000-5700-1100-600-0

ADAM: 8000-7200

Winner: Adam

The game would have been a shutout in Adam’s favor, were it not for the sole Premature Burial he played that brought him down to 7200.  Basically, He got out a Goblin Attack Force, hit me with it in my state of having no monsters, and pounded the rest into me over the next few turns in order to win.

I wasn’t mad at him for beating me, because he said I had a really good deck and that my idea for it was very original.  Not to mention the fact that I didn’t think that this deck would get me as far as it did.  Anyway, I got my PGD pack, and I got my THIRD Winged Sage Falcos (“Piece of Crap!” I remarked).  Anyway, I also made some great trades- I traded off a Harpie’s Featherduster (I had 3, so it wasn’t a big deal) for Exodia the Forbidden One, Gaia the Dragon Champion, and Raigeki (pretty good, I thought).  I also traded my Injection Fairy Lily (which I got from some little kid, meaning the condition was not its best, to say the least) for a mint Don Zaloog.  Now, for the “Props and Slops”

Props:

-My Deck for having 2 Ring of Destruction and getting to the Quarterfinals

-My friend David’s dad for giving me a ride to the tournament

-My friend David’s mom for giving me a ride home

-Matt for posing an interesting challenge and calling me “the best person he’s ever played”

-Adam for complimenting me on my deck and its originality and for being a sportsmanly player (not rubbing in my loss)

-The judges for convincing countless skeptics (who weren’t even involved with the duels) that my Graverobber-Barrel Combo DOES, in fact, work

-Dream Wizards for being the only tournament location in my area

-Me for doing well, building “Barrel Burn” and, making those trades I did

Slops:

-The people who didn’t think my combo worked and should have been minding their own business

-The entrance fee for the tournament being $6.30

-Upper Deck for killing Trees in order to print Winged Sage Falcos and put 3 in the PGD packs I’ve bought

Well, that’s all, folks!  Again, my name is Andy and my e-mail address is duelistemporerandy@hotmail.com.  Thanks for reading, and any reason-backed response is always appreciated.
