Deck: Bruticus

I’ve gotten some new cards and replaced a few favs with their newer LON counterparts, namely the power-ups United We Stand and Mage Power over Megamorph. Both awesome cards! I may be about 50/50 Monster/M&T, but as a calculated beatdown deck, I do want a few more Beatdowners to make the cut. Well, of course my goal is 40-45 cards and feel like I still can have what I want in the deck. This one is doing pretty good around the house with the boys, but can it stand up to the rigors of the Toy Chest Tournament?

Tourney Report

March 26, 2003

The Toy Chest, Cary NC 6-8pm

Entry Fee: 5 bucks

Prize: 2 Booster Packs of Choice (but everyone gets 1 Pack just for registering, sweet!)

I get there first as usual and invest in a hearty pregame meal of Laffy Taffy and Mountain Dew. Ah, sweet! So I am going through my deck to mix it up and make sure I didn’t forget anything this time. Looks to be in order, so I await my first opponent. A cool new rule is if you duel before 6, you get a full duel, those late only get 1 match. Finally, some order around here! I feel like that will help me in the future as normally I get here in plenty of time to get it on! I go ahead and sign up and buy a pack before the duel, Spiritualism, like my 7th one! Joy, no Gemini Elf to quickly add in, so that will be that.

Match 1 Ghetto Kaiba vs Sam (Gainer/Burner Deck)

This guy, Sam, Had some good ideas, but didn’t want to run Gravity Bind or Messenger of Peace. So, needless to say, the first match ran about 5 turns. When I played Mirror Force on him, he said "Wow!" and wanted to stop the game and look at the card. Needless to say, the second round was the same as we had a great conversation about building a stall/burner deck kinda like what he had envisioned. He really was creative and it was cool to hear some new ideas for a change. We traded cards and I went around talking to a few others while I waited for the first round to finish.

Match 2 Me vs John (Stall Deck)

He had about every card in a suitcase, kinda like Kaiba (wink), but I had seen him duel a match before and I thought this would be a good matchup. He asked me what kind of deck I had and of course, like a lot of people here, I replied "Good ol’ fashioned Beatdown". His reply was "Great, I have just the deck for that, STASIS!" Great, I thought, another weird deck for me to worry about! I do believe in this deck and I think has the potential to be my best yet. Let's find out!

Round 1

I am in love with Penguin Soldier! This card has worked out much better than Man-Eater Bug for me. It just sweeps things right out of the way so I can get my monsters to roll in for the kill. Thank you Joey Deck! I abuse the Killer Penguin to keep his cards in his hand, which turn out to be Man-Bugs and the like, ugly flip stuff that would kill me. He doesn’t get too many monsters the first match and while I do get Mirror Forced with 2 Summoned Skulls poised for the kill (ouch!), I still end up coming through with my friend Kycoo steadily robbing his MOFaiths of his good cards (Raigeki and Change of Heart). So I pull out the first match.

Round 2

I remember that I have a hard time getting Jinzo out here. Not that I can’t search for him with Witch, but I just never draw any good Tribute monsters here. Alas, this guy says he is anti-Jinzo, so I feel like what few traps I have will be safe, though I’ve yet to hit him or anyone with any good ones. He goes Def again and it’s almost a rerun card-for-card of the last match until he starts playing Embyko Dramond on my cards, holding me up for a while. Each of my Heavy Storms gets Magic Jammed or Magic Drained and then my monsters start to fade away. To do? I know a lot of people give me flak for having Exchange in my deck, but you don’t know how cool this card can be if played right. Example, I have Barrel Dragon and Exchange plus a few power ups in my hand. I can’t get past his Def. without fear of my good power-ups getting destroyed. As I have Solemn Judgemented this game, my LPs are down my ½. So I put down all of my M/T cards and play Exchange. I get to see his ha! nd, which had 2 sucky cards and what….Jinzo! I gladly take him on my team and give him my cherished Barrel Dragon, knowing he probably won’t sac his Def. Monsters for a direct Atk. beast like him. So I get Jinzo on the field, eq. Him with Mage power and it’s on! That play changed the game. Though I eventually lost it a few rounds later, I still managed to mount enough force to come back and win it. Thankfully, a Change of Heart on his last Man-Eater Bug proved to be sufficient. A great match, though lengthy. We are haggling with my friend the Curly-Haired Dude as for a good trade for his Morphing Jar. It ends up being a full set of Exodia, which I’m so close to finishing off my 2nd. A steep price, but I know that only 4 have been pulled at our Tourney and I’m blessed to have got a sweet trade for 1.

Match 3: Ghetto Kaiba vs Curly-Haired Dude

Oh well, this was a repeat of the Finals match of last week! At least I have a full duel with him this time. Not sure if he’s still running Necrofear at this point. I find out quickly as he slaps down a Destiny board. Not again! He says he has 4 sets of it already, so I figure at least 2 are in here. I let him get a few more down before I figure he doesn’t have anything to block a Magic Card (the reason I don’t like Destiny Board) so of course, here comes the Heavy Storm! I basically wait for that and then Penguin Soldier shows me the way to his Life Points. While a couple of rounds he holds out with well placed Man-Eater Bugs, I eventually get him. Yes! I finally won a round against him! But not a match…

Round 2

Ok, this one took a lot longer as well. I was doing fine and once again eliminated his Destiny Board, when, all of a sudden, Scapegoat! He abused that card on me a couple of times. I was thinking of putting it in my deck and probably will next week, but he got a few good uses out of it. Namely breaking out the dirty goats, then equipping a Sangan with United We stand. I was thinking of the exact same combo! A Sangan was killing my monsters. But wisely, I had put all my monsters to defense so that he couldn’t search with his Sangan cuz’ I knew he had Exodia in there somewhere and he was holding a full hand the whole match. So Eventually I put my Penguin Soldier to work and then Raigeki’d the goats away. But this time, I had my own United We Stand out to end it, which he Magic Jammed and I Solemn Judgemented, and I had finally beat him! Thinking back, this was the first dude I dueled all those weeks ago when I was a doe-eyed rookie, it was awesome to finally get past hi! m. Now there is only 1 other awesome guy here I haven’t beat, there is this guy in a wheelchair who I think must be the Pharoah or something cuz he beats everyone everytime. I think his name is Chris, but I can’t remember, but he’s cool to talk to, though he and I think the other dude, Kai, roll together. Hopefully one day, I will get a chance to cross his path again!

Match 4 (Final Four) Ghetto Kaiba vs John’s Friend (Beatdown)

A buddy of John’s that played a similar deck to mine. I didn’t get a monster to play in my first turn, so I took a hit from his LaJinn. I ended up killing his with my own and the exact same thing happened again with 7Fish. So im down by ½ already. But I do get some good equips, so I start to attack, but end up getting Mirror Forced. This is going downhill fast, so I put up a Wall of Illusion, and though we had a disagreement about how a card was played. It was Wabuko, I said it stopped all monster attacks as everyone here played it, he had played differently and seeing how I was already behind, I let him have it, I ended up losing the first match.

Round 2

We were both in Def. Mode, evenly matched when the Owner came over to check on us and gave us both 2 moves each. Dag! I always falter under these circumstances. I think I attacked him, for 1800, got Fissured and he hit me back for 1800. I made a play for him again, but got Mirror Forced. He attacked me again, and I played Magic Cylinder, but he 7Tooled me. We only had 2 rounds to play, so instead of insisting on another draw, I conceded and shook his hand. As always, Ghetto Kaiba’s greatest enemy is the Tourney Clock. That’s 0-5 for me in matches decided by time here. Oh well, I stand and talk with Steve-O as we try and make this huge trade involving 2 Magic Cylinders and 3/5 of Exodia, but it doesn’t pan out. I did trade for a Left Leg, however! So at least I can still get my trade on here some days. Now, onto the Props and Slops!

Props

Still no Gemini Elf in my binder! The shame!!

Scared to trade my spare Cylinder for some Exodia parts (but I felt good when I got home!)

Getting the shaft as the Final Match now gets 15 minutes to play through, a week late I might add!
