Keith Rogers Mechanical Beatdown Anime Central Club, Kansas City November 16, 2002 30+ Entries I'm away visiting my brother at college in Lawrence, and KC isn't that far away so we took a short trip there for a weekend. While driving around with my friend, I randomly ran into a Yu-Gi-Oh tournament! What luck! The place wasn't a card store, it wasn't even a store (well, it's kind of an impromptu store). It was a building a local anime/gaming club uses to hold/run/operate tournaments every week. Anyone is welcome. Japanese cards are legal. Pharoahs Servant is legal. "Bandit" Keith's Mechanical Beatdown 1x Barrel Dragon (2600, Kills monsters) 1x Jinzo (2400, Negates traps) 1x Summoned Skull (2500) 1x Machine King (2200, Gains 100 attack for every machine monster on the field, Japanese) 1x Guardian of the Throne Room (1650), later replaced by Vorse Raider (1900, Japanese) 3x Mechanical Chaser (1850) 2x La Jinn (1800) 2x 7 Colored Fish (1800) 2x Harpie's Brother (1800) 1x Goblin Attack Force (2300!, Switches to defense mode after attacking) 1x Magician of Faith (Reborns magic cards) 1x Man Eater Bug (Kills monsters) 2x Witch of the Black Forest (Search for better monsters) 1x Sangan (Search for better monsters) 1x Cyber Jar (Very good) 1x Raigeki 1x Dark Hole 1x Monster Reborn 1x Premature Burial (Pay 800 lifepoints, reborn a monster) 1x Change of Heart 1x Heavy Storm 1x Mystical Space Typhoon 1x Card Destruction, later replaced by Pot of Greed 1x Graceful Charity (Draw 3 cards, discard 2, Japanese) 1x Stop Defense 1x Fissure 1x Tribute to the Doomed 2x Axe of Despair 1x Limiter Removal (Doubles the attack of all machines, destroys them at the end of the turn) 1x Magic Jammer 1x 7 Tools of the Bandit 1x Waboku 2x Trap Hole (LATER) 1x Trap Hole (took one out, for Call of the Haunted) 1x Call of the Haunted (Reborn a monster, if this card dies the monster dies) Round One - Keith vs. Matt (Varied Deck) My first matchup. He told me this was his first tournament, and we wished each other luck. His deck was a mixed beatdown/dragon, I could tell was made by combining a Yugi and Kaiba Starter deck, plus a few random cards from some booster sets. 1st Duel: I went first, and got 2 Mechanical Chasers, and Jinzo, and Magic Jammer. I played my trusty Mech. Chaser, Magic Jammer face down, and ended. He put down some m/t cards, and a monster face down. I Raigekied it, then tributed for... JINZO! He tried to Waboku my attack, so I had to explain Jinzo to him. Without his traps, his lifepoints were quickly depleted by my machine army, led by Jinzo. VICTORY 2nd Duel: I went first again, but this time the only monster I had was Sangan. After he kills my Sangan, I play the monster I fetched: Cyber Jar. He attacked Cyber Jar, and I got a bunch of cards, among them, Jinzo. My turn, and I play Jinzo to destroy his La Jinn. On his turn, he tributes his remaining 2 monsters for Blue Eyes! I trap hole... er, never mind. Jinzo is gone and he gains control of the field. I remember for the next few turns he couldn't get any other monsters, and I got nothing that can kill that Blue Eyes. So I kept throwing monsters in defense, until he pulls a Lord of D. and summons a Blue Eyes and Curse of Dragon! I lose a whooping 7200 LP to his dragons. I draw my next card... GRACEFUL CHARITY! It's a Japanese card I snagged in a trade before the duels started. For an instant I forgot what it did (like Tea in her duel with Mai?). I use it to draw 3 cards: Barrel Dragon, Raigeki, and something else. I discard Barrel Dragon and the other card, then blow away his dragons with Raigeki! He summons Man Eater Bug and attacks me with it. I think it was the only monster he had in his hand, but I'm almost dead anyway. It's "heart of the cards" time, and I pull... Monster Reborn! I get back Barrel Dragon, and start to turn this duel around! Now it's his turn to be on the defensive. But unlike him, I can use the Barrel Dragon's effect to blast away his defenders to get to his lifepoints. I get him down to 2000 points, when he draws Monster Reborn and revives his Blue Eyes. Unfortunately, I had Limiter Removal, so he attacked his way into a point 5200 ATK... and loses. VICTORY That was a pretty intense first round! I was sure I was going to lose that second duel when he had his dragons out. He was a great sport about being eliminated in the first round. Better luck next time. We shook hands, he wished me luck in my next rounds, and I wished him luck in his future tournaments. This guy was a true duelist. Round Two - Keith vs. Cole (Newbie/Cheater Deck) Here we go, round 2. My second opponent was a 11 or so year old kid. Unfortunately, he was arrogant and annoyinng, always talking about how good his deck is, how he has so many rare cards, and how good his friends were. I got a look at his deck, and I have no idea how he made it past the first round. Simply put, his deck is terrible. He's got 50-60 some cards in there, and all sorts of crappy cards. The worst thing is, THIS WAS AN EXODIA DECK! 1st Duel: He won the toss, and plays Card Destruction. (Who puts Card Destruction in with Exodia?) I caught him trying to draw an extra card, and called a judge over. The idiot got a warning, and he had to discard that extra card. He tries to play a Gaia without tributing, and after some arguing the judge comes over again. He argues with the judge until he's a word short of being DQ'ed, then finally concedes. He plays Silver Fang in attack. (WTF?) I blow away his weak monsters... I see his deck is filled with useless cards, and high level monsters that need sacrifice. He didn't have a chance. VICTORY 2nd Duel: I go first this time, and I place La Jinn in attack mode, a Waboku and some other cards facedown. I planned to use Waboku (if necessary) to save La Jinn to tribute him for the Jinzo in my hand. Now it's his turn. He fumbles with his cards for a while, then declares himself the winner. He shows me the 5 parts of Exodia in his hand. OBVIOUSLY, he's a total cheat. How dumb of me to try to peek at other duels around us while he was so-called "thinking". If I had watched him carefully the whole time, I bet I'd have seen him fix his cards. Given his history, I could've called the judge over and had him searched. But I was mad, and I wanted to take him down at his own game. I give him the victory. Now we're both tied. It's time to duel. DEFEAT 3rd Duel: This time I'm watching him like a hawk, and I let him know it. He's nervous, twitchy, fidgeting in his seat. I give him a glare each time he reaches under the table. He doesn't dare get caught cheating. He forfeits once I get my Barrel Dragon and Jinzo on the field. VICTORY I'm glad I beat this guy. This was too easy. I wish Matt from round 1 could have played this guy instead of me, he didn't deserve to be in the tournament, much less round 2. BREAK Woo hoo! A much needed break. We get 20 minutes to buy, trade, get a drink, and go to the bathroom. I just went before the tournament started, and I had a bottle of water with me, so what left to do but chill, wander around, and improve my deck? I paid a $1 for a Mystery Pack, got a Japanese Magician of Faith and a LOB Pot of Greed. I traded the MoF for a Vorse Raider, a kickass level 4 with 1900 ATK and no drawbacks. Then I went into a group of duelists to talk about stuff, mostly deck strategy, who's good, and who cheats. I found out Cole, the guy from Round 2, tried to make up BS effects for Japanese cards in his first duel, and the judge had to come over and set him straight with a translation book. During the chatting... some of my cards were stolen! Mostly extra cards not being used in my deck, but they got my Axe of Despair! They also got my Relinquished and Blue Eyes Toon Dragon! I looked over and saw Cole, his brother, and his brother's friend David all laughing. I'm sure they did it, but I can't prove it. When I approach them, David shows me a Axe of Despair and Relinquished (I could tell were mine cause they were in my card sleeves), but puts them away quickly. We get into a pretty big argument, and Cole and his brother almost get thrown out. The judges come and break it up. Cole was searched cause a judge saw him steal cards from a kid. But they have nothing on David, so they can't touch him. For now. I swear revenge. Guess I have to make do with a Malevolent Nuzzler instead. Round Three - Keith vs. Rei (Impossibly Broken Deck from HELL) He's the guy I traded the Magician of Faith with. I had a hunch this guy might be good before I faced him, but I never knew how good. I have no idea what kind of deck he uses, so I call it an Impossible Deck from Hell. Does that mean Japan is Hell? (J/K!) I swear, I've never seen so many shiny foilies and impossibly high numbers in one place. Over half his cards I've never even heard of, but the judges and their translation books assure me they're indeed real. 1st Duel: He goes first, and lays a monster face down, and a m/t card. I Stop Defense his monster, and it's a Sangan! I summon my ever-faithful Mech. Chaser to tear that little critter to pieces. I play Waboku face down. It's his turn - and he summons face down creature. My turn... and so far so good! I tribute Mech. Chaser for Jinzo, and blow away his... Cyber Jar! I get an army of monsters 4-star creatures. All 5 of my monster zones are loaded with attackers. All he has is a face down Magician of Faith. But on a strong hunch, I hold off attacking, and end my battle phase. I use Heavy Storm, and sure enough, his face down card was Mirror Force! Ha! I'm doing great! I confidently end my turn. I don't exactly remember what happens here. He summoned THREE fusion monsters: a Black Skull Dragon, a Dragon Master Knight (like on the show, yep, the one with 5000 ATK points), and some wierd Dark Magician thingy with 2900 ATK points. He also tributed the Magician of Faith (the one he used to get back a Polymerization) for a Jinzo of his own. The Dragon Master Knight gains 500 ATK points from the Black Skull Dragon. The wierd Dark Magician gains 1000 points from the BSD and DMK. After a Raigeki AND Harpy's Feather Duster my LP is wide open for an attack by 3 of the toughest monsters I've ever seen, and I'm dead, dead, dead. DEFEAT 2nd Duel: Okay, I did NOT see that coming. The really scary thing is that fact that he DID see it coming. Looking back, I realize the whole time I thought I was doing great, he was sitting there just as confident as I was. The only difference was, he really WAS doing great. But a duelist never gives up just because an opponent is tough. He goes first, and gets that darn Dark Magician fusion out again. Now I find out it has the ability to negate magic cards, just like a built-in Magic Jammer. A wasted Dark Hole! I play a Man Eater Bug and Waboku face down and end my turn. He plays Vorse Raider and attacks my MEB, and say adios to the Dark Magician! I let his Vorse Raider attack my LP, saving Waboku to protect a monster so I can tribute it. My turn, and I use Fissure on his Vorse Raider, than play Magician of Faith face down. Next, he summons a strange Blue Eyes with 1900 ATK that instantly destroys all face down monsters, ignoring damage and effects. Noooo!! I draw a Cyber Jar, but can't play him in defense, not now! I place La Jinn in defense and end. He summons another 1900 attacker, and attacks my defender with the Blue Eyes. I use Waboku... unfortunatly he's destroyed anyway! Waboku protects from battle damage, but that darn Blue Eyes destroys a creature before the damage step. He told me all that before, but I realize the implications of it, until now! He attacks for another 1900 damage. My turn, and I draw Raigeki! He counters it with Imperial Order. I counter with Mystical Space Typhoon. Then I set Cyber Jar. He puts a face down monster and ends. I flip up Cyber Jar... and BAM! 4 new attackers for me. He got only 1 monster, a Vorse Raider. I tribute 2 monsters for Barrel Dragon, and blast away his monster with its cannons. I attack him for 7250 damage! The score is now 750 to 4200. But is this a bad sign? He's staring at me as confidently as ever! In yet another great Yu-Gi-Oh moment, he closes his eyes and (melo)dramatically draws a card. Without even looking at it (as far as I could tell), he places it back on the top of his deck and surrenders. He forfeits both this duel and the next, giving me 2 wins and the advance. He reveals his next card, Doubling Magic or something like that, which would have let him use a magic card from my graveyard (Raigeki). He had the cards to fuse Dragon Master Knight in his hand. (In other words, a ticket to clear my field and 5000 direct damage.) VICTORY 3rd Duel: Opponent Forfeits VICTORY Wow, I can't believe it. I look around, and 2 other duels are still going on. It turns out, one of them is Rei's brother Van. He's playing some guy I don't know. In another duel, a girl is playing against a friend of mine. And the 3rd duel, that concluded before ours, David beat a kid I was talking to during the break. Whoever won our duel would've faced him (David) in the next round! Damn! My opponent was somehow keeping track of all the duels surrounding us WHILE playing? Impossible? But he did know about my cards getting stolen, and let me win so I could face the thief. I go up to David, and challenge him in front of everybody. If I win, I get all my cards back plus one card of my choice from his deck, and he'll publically admit to the truth in front of everyone. If he wins, he can choose any one card from my deck, and I'll "admit" to cheating to get this far in the tournament. Round Four Semifinals - Keith vs. David the Cheat (Beatdown Deck) So it begins... 1st Duel: For all his bragging, he can't get any monsters out, at ALL. I win easily. VICTORY 2nd Duel: Now things heat up. He plays Dark Elf in attack and ends. I play Harpie's Bro in attack, and Limiter Removal and Mystical Space Typhoon face down. He summons Goblin Attack Force, and equips it with Megamorph. He attacks with Dark Elf (lowering his lifepoints), then attacks me with GAF for 4600 damage! Are you sure? Nope! I used MST on his Megamorph, so I only get hurt 2300 (+200 from his Dark Elf), but that's still a lot. I draw, and play Dark Hole. I attack with Vorse Raider, and play 7 Tools face down. He plays 3 face down cards, and GAF in attack, then ends. I tribute Vorse Raider for Summoned Skull, and he uses Solemn Judgement. Now he attacks with GAF, taking me to 3200 LP, and he's at 2550. I draw Pot of Greed, which leads to Change of Heart and Monster Reborn! I revive Harpie's Bro and Change of Heart his GAF, to sacrifice them both for Barrel Dragon! I attack, but Waboku saves him. It's his turn. He plays his 3rd GAF, and Megamorphs it to 4600 ATK. He attacks me with it, and I flip up Limiter Removal. He counters with Magic Jammer, and I counter with 7 Tools! The end result? Limiter Removal doubles my Barrel Dragon's attack to 5200, and 7 Tools lowered my life points below his, cutting his GAF by half! His now puny 1150 Goblins run smack into my 5200 wall o' doom... GAME OVER. SWEET SWEET VICTORY There's no way he can welch on our bet. Everyone saw us make the bet. He was about to accept anyway, when Rei comes by and shows David his cell phone (one of those that can take pictures... I want one!), with some pretty incriminating pictures. This is just fuel on the fire, and David publically confesses to stealing, from 2 other people as well. I get all my cards back, and as part of our deal I kindly relieve him of his... Call of the Haunted! Serves the cheating thief right. I've defeated my arch-nemesis. Now it's time for the finals. Round Five FINALS - Keith vs. Van (Warrior/Discard Deck) This is it, the final battle. It's a good thing I put all that crap with cheaters to rest. Now it's just a good old fashioned honorable duel. But that doesn't mean I can let myself relax. I may have defeated my arch-rival, but this one's for the tournament. I've come this far, beating cheaters and experts alike... and it all comes down to this. It's time to duel! 1st Duel: All I remember about this duel is that I won the coin toss. We trade blows, back and forth, and in the end we're both down to below 1000 lifepoints. For several turns neither of us can get any monsters, but he draws a Cyber Jar first and attack me for the win. DEFEAT 2nd Duel: Now he goes first, and plays an Axe Raider, and 2 cards face down. I try to attack with Mech. Chaser, but he has Negate Attack. I put down Waboku and end my turn. He tributes his Raider for a General Freed and attacks... my Waboku. Change of Heart won't work on his General, so I'll save it for later. I tribute Mech. Chaser for Summoned Skull, and he has a facedown Kunai with Chain! He plays a card with 1600 ATK, that acts kind of like a Lord of D. for warriors, and uses a perm. magic card that raises his warrior's ATK by 200 for every warrior on the field. He has 2 warriors, so they both gain 400 points! He kills my Summoned Skull, and attacks with General Freed for 3200. I draw Call of the Haunted, but first I use Heavy Storm to clear his away his magic cards, then revive my Summoned Skull to destroy his 1600 ATK monster. He uses General Freed's effect to seach his deck for a warrior monster instead of drawing, and plays Confiscation on me, to get rid of my Change of Heart. He plays another Axe Raider, and kills my Summoned Skull with General Freed and attacks my lifepoints with Axe Raider. I'm down to 3000 points, while he's sitting high with a full 8000. I draw Cyber Jar, and play it face down. He attacks it, and we both get a bunch of monsters down, but I also get Raigeki! I tribute a La Jinn for Machine King... with a Mech. Chaser also on the field, his ATK is 2400. I clear his field with Raigeki, and now the score is a little more even at 3000 to 3750. He draws, then combines 3 little robots, Alpha, Beta, and Gamma to make the ultimate robot warrior Magnet Valkyrion! He also plays a monster in defense. He easily destroys Machine King, bringing my life points down to 1900. Then he splits up his robot into the 3 little magnets (in defense), since he knows I have a Fissure in my hand. On my turn, I play Fissure to get rid of one of his robots, then play Premature Burial to get back my Summoned Skull. I kill the rest of his magnets, leaving him with only 1 face down card. His turn, and he tributes his card for another facedown card. I attack, and it's a General of Impenetrable Defense. He draws, equips Axe of Despair on his General, and destroys my Mech. Chaser, taking me down to 400! My next card is... miracle! Pot of Greed! I get the 2 cards I need most: Limiter Removal and Monster Reborn. I reborn whatever monster and tribute it and the Summoned Skull for Barrel Dragon! The effect works, taking out his Defense General and leaving his lifepoints open for my Limiter Removal-ed Barrel Dragon! VICTORY 3rd Duel: Now the pressure's on! It all comes down to this. He wins the coin toss, and plays a monster face down, and 2 m/t cards face down. I try to attack with 7 Colored Fish, but he blocks it with Negate Attack, and play a 7 Tools and Trap Hole face down. On his turn, he flips up Cyber Jar! I get a whopping 5 monsters, 2 of them are Mech. Chaser! He gets 5 monsters, also. He plays Heavy Storm, then a magic card to search his deck for a Buster Blader, then tributes 2 of his monsters to summon it. Now he flips up his other face down card, DNA Surgery, to change all monsters on the field to dragons. He equips his Buster Blader with Power of Teamwork and Megamorph. He attacks my Mech. Chaser with Axe Raider, lowering his LP and activating Megamorph. His Buster Blader is over 10000+ ATK now, and ONE attack at my 7 Colored Fish wipes out my entire 8000 life points. BITTER DEFEAT So that's it, I lose. But hey, I did come in 2nd place. RESULTS 1st Place - Van, choice of 15 boosters 2nd Place - Me, choice of 10 boosters 3rd Place - Lauren (David left, so she automatically wins 3rd), choice of 5 boosters. I got Swords of Revealing Light, 3 Pieces of Exodia (!), Kuriboh, and Delinquent Duo. What luck! Even though I didn't win 1st, this was one of the funnest tourney's I've ever went to. Props: Me, for winning 2nd (and for beating David) Matt, for being a good sport and true duelist Rei, for letting me win so I could take on David (And for eliminating Cole's cheater brother in round 1) Van, for winning 1st Place instead of me! The boosters I won, for being so great! Slops: Cole, his brother, and David for cheating, lying, and stealing Rei, for schooling me so bad it made me look like a newb, even if he did eventually let me win Van, for busting out the Buster Blader with rediculously high ATK (and making me look like a newb, again) My friend Jake, for losing to a girl, how could you!
