Subject: Eliminator, Stormwatch, Ottawa, ONT, July 21st
I just played at a Tournament today at Wizard's Tower.  Its my fifth one there.  IT was supposed to be Sanctioned, but the place didn't get the Tournament Kit, which it should have 3 weeks ago to start holding sanctioned tournaments.  The place holds tournaments every Sunday.

Anyways, my deck
Eliminator Deck (Hey, I didn't name it, but it is fast and fun)
Creatures = 24
2 Summoned Skull
3 La Jinn
3 7 Coloured Fish
3 Man-Eater Bug
3 Masked Sorcerer
3 Jirai Gumo
1 Dark Elf
2 Magicians of Faith
2 Sangans
2 Witch of the Black Forest

Magic/Traps =
Magic =
1 Pot of Greed
1 Raigkei
1 Dark Hole
1 Change of Heart
1 Monster Reborn
3 Fissures
1 Tribute to the Doomed
1 Swords of Revealing Light
1 Heavy Storm
2 Shield & Sword

Traps =
1 Mirror Force
2 Trap Holes
1 Acid Trap Hole
1 Solemn Judgment

Okay, this use to be more speed based, but it has some controlling aspects to it.  If you want to copy it, beware, I have my opwn sadistic style.

Now, the tournament
44 People
No Japanese Cards allowed
Restrictions in Effect.

Now, keep to keep in mind, I am working on 8 hours of sleep.  Normally, this sould make me be really awake, but the four nights before it has been 3-4 hours sleep a night.  So, I am still tired as I write this report.  Now some matches I will forget a lot of whats happened, yet some, I will remember key moments and stuff.  And I have the life points for most of them.

Anyways.  How it works is that there is three preliminary rounds and then the top 8 duke it out for supremacy.

First Opponent. Tran
Okay, after a mix up and the wrong person being registered, I got this li'l guy.  Now I think his age was 8, and he had probably a 100 card deck, but, he wasn't that bad at all.  He needs experience, and to make his deck work for him, and not him working for his deck.  My deck performed its speed, and I killed him twice in a row.
2-0
Life points
First Game
Tran - 8000 - 7900 - 5200 - 700 - 0
Jacob (Stormwatch) - 8000 - 7400 - 3700 - 3450
Now, I can't remember if I Jirai Gumoed or Solemn Judged, but some way I lost half points, and I did it to myself.

Second Game
Tran - 8000 - 5500 - 3700 - 0
Jacob (SW) - 8000 - 7500
Okay, now I remember how this duel went.  (hey, I just remembered, thats good.  See what saving the scores can do)
Okay, he went first.  He put a creature in Defense position.
My turn, I change of hearted it, and put down a Summoned Skull.
He Activated his Just Desserts and I took 500.
He then layed down a creature in defense position.
I played a La Jinn or 7-C Fish(it don't matter which) and hit his life points while Skull killed Creature.
Then I killed him on my next turn.
so 1-0 for me.  (you go by matches and not individual duels, also, if you face a tougher opponent, your ranking will go up.)

Anyways, I will also tell of the company I keep here.  I come with two friends.  Cole Shaver and Chris Fortin.  I don't think they would post their reports, but oh well.
And if I can, I will find the site where you can look at everyone's scores.  It gets updated once a week, at sometime.  But don't expect it to be soon.

Anyways, back to the Preliminaries
Round TWO
This Guy Nicholas.  I have seen him before, but never faced him.  He says he will loose against me, as it is his curse for the second Round, he always faces someone tough.  He got to face me, and I think I have a reputation now, but didn't notice it, oh well, all will be made clear at the end of the report.
So, the match.
Game one
Nicholas - 8000 - 7100 - 4400 - 0
Jacob (SW)- 8000 - 4000 - 2700
OKay, well, I know I used Jirai here.  It obviously was one of the ones to kill him.  This is a guy who doesn't have all the good cards, but is just in it too have fun.  He plays casually with Sothy and Daniel, more on them later.

Game Two
Nicholas - 8000 - 7100 - 5300 - 2900 - 2650
Jacob (SW) - 8000 - 7250
YEah, this one went by really fast.  I remember winning two Gumo tosses.  This whole tournament, they were pretty lucky.  Not much damage as usual.

So, not much commentary there.  Just of how it happened and the life points.

Now, is round three of the preliminaries.
Match Three, Chris Wright
Okay, I have battled this guy twice before.  Personally, I don't care for him too much, he jipped a li'l girl in TWO trades.  And he did the life points so I don't have the track record of it.  But I remember some of the things that happened.  He plays an Exodia Deck again this week.  He played it last week, and a li'l Girl name Jason (somewhat inexperienced but a Very good head on her shoulders) kick his behind.

first game.  He won with a Skull that my deck refused to stop, this after I card destructed two parts of Exodia.

Inbetween 1 and 2 he sides out 5 pieces of Exodia for something.

Second Game, I won.  I thought it was the third game though, for some odd reason.   beware, this is when me sleep deprivation kicks in.  Although, I saw he used a Kuriboh in this game.  He is one of two to use it, the other being my best friend Cole, who has three.

Third Game, okay, this was a rollar Coaster.  Well, Throughout the match, I had used my one Heavy Storm to pretty good avail, and he showed that he could use Heavy storm as well.
The Creatures were dieing very quickly.  Normally a match can't go over 45 minutes.  This WHOLE match went 40 minutes.  This Duel was the longest.  Sothy and Daniel both watched as well from the sidelines.

Crunch time.  This is the time where it just gets Very good, and no matter how sleep deprived I was, I was alert.
Current lifepoints.
Chris - 900 (I had just taken him down but he removed my Jirai.)
me, Jacob (SW) - 350 (lost the Jirai flip and also recently used a Solemn Judgment)

Now, he has three cards in his hand, none on the field.
I got one magic on the field, to try and bluff that it is a trap.
I pick up a Witch.  (and I regularly attack with her believe it or not, its kinda a Jacob strategy that I am somewhat famous for there.  Attack with anything and everything.  IF they try to go after them, even a witch, their are traps and Mirror Force and Swords of Revealing Light or a close match and many creatures already wasted.)

Now, this is where it gets interesting.  Cause I saw, in Chris's indecision, that he could have attacked when I was at 350, but didn't have enough to kill me or feared a trap Hole.  Not sure which.

But I played my Witch, and still in the First main Phase, I used my Card Destruction and Nailed TWO kuribohs that would have clinched him the match.  And he couldn't stop my Witch.

Here is where both Players having one heavy storm just gets you into the habit of holding onto cards even more.  But I play with Two Card Destructions, and if there is any card I really know how to use, its that.  I use it in so many situations, and it was the killer here.

Now, this was the last in the set of preliminaries, and I am 3-0, so I am Guaranteed into the Quarter finals.  But now I will go on to how my deck operates.

Now the additions that where made where, one Time Wizard gone, traded.  Two Masked Sorcerers in, two shield and swords. And One Acid Trap Hole put in replace of a normal Trap Hole.

And you know what.  The Cards that help this deck out so much are the more controlling aspects.
Change of Heart, Raigeki, Dark Hole, HEAVY STORM, and my Favorite, Card Destruction.  I must have two Card Destructions in my deck, they are great, and even better, I know how to use them, whether for myself or to hinder my opponent.  I can pick the best time to use it, and when to hold off.  Some games I have judged that it is not good to use it.  Other times, like with Chris, I can cripple the opponent at a decisive junction.

Mirror Force is a dangerous card, and Change of Heart is tricky.  Pot of Greed is fun, but we all know that, and the MAgicians of Faith bring back stuff.  Although I hate when people bring back a Sword of revealing Light.  It can hurt my deck at times, but then there is Heavy Storm, which is great.  I have two, but let my best friend use one of mine during the tournaments.

So, anyways, back to the tournament.  I had 5 minutes to collect my thoughts, so I stepped outside.

When I came back in, Dave (the owner and who runs the tournaments, a REALLY nice Guy) was picking up the last matches and declaring matches as ended.

So, finally, the top eight are posted.  And it goes by first place battling 8th place, then second battling seventh, and so on.

Quarterfinals
1. Jacob Woloshin (me, Stormwatch)
2. Cole Shaver
3. Chris Fortin
4. Sothy Phan (I told you about this guy somewhat)
5. Daniel Ly
6. A guy who I know but can't remember the name of.  an okay deck, but I would love to start taking out all those sac-4 creatures and use some better ones.  He lost to Chris the match before.  Chris Fortin.
7. some guy who didn't show for the Quarters and thought he didn't make it.
8. Chris Wright.

So, the pairings
1. Jacob Woloshin
8. Chris Wright

4. Sothy
5. Daniel

3. Chris Fortin
6. The neat guy

2. Cole gets a freakin' bye in the Quarterfinals, how weird is that.  So he goes to watch the Sothy/Daniel match, which I am playing right beside so.

Now, the info on people.
Jacob Woloshin, ME, you don't need the info on me, you can just ask, or it gets written here.

So Cole Shaver, my best friend here.  He has won, in the past five weeks, two tournaments, and gotten in second place once.  I have faced him twice.  He is the only one to beat me in a MATCH.  That is my only Second place.  Otherwise I have first place in the other three I went too.  I missed one Tournament that Cole won.  Okay, Cole likes pure defensive decks.  He plays with Mystical Elves and Kuribohs and many stuff that puts a stop to an attack.  He likes waiting like a Tiger in the Grass.

Chris Fortin, now, he is a friend, and he has been through many decks.  And last week, he placed 4th, losing to Sothy and Daniel.  Now, when I first played in a tournament with him, he had the Lord of D. Dragon combo deck, but also somewhat more faster than some of them.  He placed third in my first week, which was the highest he ever has gotten.
Then he made a Harpy lady deck, which seemed to do quite well for him until he got to the Quarter or semi finals.
Last week he used a variant of Cole's deck.  He didn't like that, its too slow for his tastes.  He is somewhat impatient.  So, he wanted to copy my deck.  I don't like deck copiers, and I also know that I use my deck in unexpected and weird ways.  I mean, its more my style, and it has conformed to me.  So he used my deck as the basis, and through in some Stim Packs.  But, his Magic and Traps where lacking somewhat, he had the assentials, but not so much to boost it up and keep his deck with an edge, like mine.  He had Unbridled speed, with a La Jinn capable of taking out a Skull.

Sothy, I have faced him Thrice before, and he is best friends with Daniel.  So like me and Cole know eachotehrs decks off by heart, so do these two know eachothers.  Now Sothy I think is a lot like me.  Doesn't have as many good cards, yet continually beats odds.  He has proven to be a very tough opponent.  And he is someone that has always been a tough match for me.  I was hoping him to win just so I can face him.  I didn't so much care if I won or lost at this point.  But I wanted to face him.  He has speed, but also Masks of darkness and a Magic Jammer and Robbin Goblin and some stuff like that, his deck is very similiar to Daniels.

Daniel, okay, before I came on the scene, he had won the previous 5 out of 6 tournaments.  And I had to go through him my first time.  I also did last week.  He is a tough opponent.  But the first time I beat him in the second duel, I used a Bug to do it, and that was the start of that li'l rep for me.

The guy who I forget his name, he had Pumpking and Suigens and stuff like that.  He is cool, and he will learn what to use with his deck, and what to take out over time.

Chris Wright, using an Exodia Deck.  He is an odder player, who likes trying to do something, yet which I do not know.  He has never pulled Exodia on me,but on another person once the week before.  I have faced him twice before, in the same day, except last time it was third preliminaries and then Semi-Finals.

Now, my first match.  I was right between Chris vs. cool guy and Sothy vs. Daniel.  Man was I havong a good seat for the action, plus my own opponent, Chris Wright.

Duel One,
Okay, as I again don't have this match written down, I will briefly provide some stuff.
I one 2-0
Chris didn't sideboard anything when he KNows I play with Card Destructions.  He plays with Exodia, but I think he figured that since he lost TWICE to me after sideboarding, he will give the Exodia deck another chance against me.   I carded four pieces in one shot.
Not sure how the rest of the match went.  I won, and I was watching mainly the Sothy and Daniel game.

Which, I have the score sheet for their round, so, I will put it here.  It was close both times, but in the end, Daniel one them both.

Game one
Sothy  - 8000 - 7550 - 5850 - 5350 - 2350 - 1450 - 550 - 0
Daniel - 8000 - 7050 - 6050 - 5650 - 4650 - 2150 - 850

Game Two
Sothy - 8000 - 7000 - 6400 - 5050 - 2150 - 0
Daniel - 8000 - 7700 - 6500 - 5750 - 4750 - 3700 - 2550 - 1500 - 700

Now, I had to face Daniel next, while Chris and Cole had to face eachother, again.
Semi Finals
Jacob vs. Daniel
Cole ve. Chris

Match
Duel One
Well, hmm, I remember I countered something good with Solemn Judgment, and we both attacked with Masked sorcerer right off the bat, it seem to be a trend in our fights.
Daniel - 8000 - 7100 - 4300 - 3700 - 0
Jacob (me) - 8000 - 7100 - 3550

Duel Two, he one shis one.  I couldn't find away to deal with either it was his Blue-Eyes or his skull.  I think it was his Skull cause his Blue-Eyes came out first turn.  I think, this is where my memory is kinda hazy.  But I had a Gumo out and Two Shield and swords, but no other time did they show in the tournament.  I remember the combo coming out, and I know I killed it, but not sure how.
Daniel - 8000 - 7100 - 5300 - 4600
Jacob - 8000 - 7100 - 4200 - 600

Duel Three,
Daniel - 8000 - 6200 - 4400 - 3400 - 1200 - 0
Jacob - 8000 - 7100 - 7050 - 5250 - 4350 - 3450

Well now, hmmm, I won this one, pretty basic.  I removed his Wall of Illusion Twice.  (he monster repborned it once.  He also attacked me with a Witch and a Sorcerer.  While I attack with a La Jinn Twice.  A Sangan the next.  Then a Jirai Gumo two more turns, which I won both flips in.

OKay, so, I won, and Chris one.  So Me again in the finals (its where I have been every time, and with only 1 second place finish out of 4 tournaments, well)

And so Cole lost, and he had to face Daniel for Third spot.
Game One
Chris - 8000 - 7100 - 6100 - 5100 - 2900 - 0
Jacob - 8000 - 7300 - 5100
Man I didn't take much.  But I love attacking with Sangans and Sorcerers.  THats all I can recall from Game one, but I might have used a Jirai Gumo.  an Even draw on both accounts though.

Game Two
Chris - 8000 - 6200 - 4200
Jacob  - 8000 - 7700 - 5900 - 4900 - 3900 - 2200 - 0
Man, I remember my deck just stalled.  It just died right here, which isn't good.

Game Three
Chris - 8000 - 3700 - 1500 - 0
Jacob - 8000 - 4000 - 2000
I love Jirai Gumo.  It is tough to kill, and when I went down to 2000, that is when Chris died.

So, I am the Champion, again, but now lets look at the deck, again.
And here is the website which shows the preliminaries and the participants of everyone who has entered.
http://www.wizardtower.com/wizardstower/events.asp
Go to the Yu-Go Oh tournaments place.  And you can look up the names of people who played.  Hence why I don't think its a problem using some of these names, especially since Whenever the comic shoppe gets the Tournament Kit, it will be sanctioned and I Betcha that all the top players listed will be there.

Now, a deck always needs to be looked at.  Win or loose, what worked and what didn't.  Basically a more gruesome playtesting.
Creatures = 24
2 Summoned Skull
3 La Jinn
3 7 Coloured Fish
3 Man-Eater Bug
3 Masked Sorcerer
3 Jirai Gumo
1 Dark Elf
2 Magicians of Faith
2 Sangans
2 Witch of the Black Forest

Magic/Traps =
Magic =
1 Pot of Greed
1 Raigkei
1 Dark Hole
1 Change of Heart
1 Monster Reborn
3 Fissures
1 Tribute to the Doomed
1 Swords of Revealing Light
1 Heavy Storm
2 Shield & Sword

Traps =
1 Mirror Force
2 Trap Holes
1 Acid Trap Hole
1 Solemn Judgment

New Additions and Subtractions to the deck before the tournament.
- 1 Time Wizard
- 1 Trap Hole
+ 2 Masked Sorcerer
- 1 Princess of Tsurugi
+ 2 Shield and Sword

Now, Improvements.
The Shield and Sword is an interesting addition.  I need to play with it more to find out.  and the Extra Sorcerers are there for it.  A Li'l combo that I saw take out a Summoned Skull that I am trying to move to the next level.
Acid Trap Hole Worked, but not against Blue-Eyes or Barrel Dragon, which you will see those occasionally.  ATH works very good though on Defenders.
Now, this could use another Heavy Storm.  This controlling Card proved invalubale on too many decks.

Now, the decks in General.  I won't touch the Exodia.  ny Exodia players, not like I am dissing you, its just, I am not too fond of Chris's deck, and I have seen some of the cards he has in it, and I shake my head at times.

Anyways, there is Defensive Decks.  Cole Shaver, with Mystical Elves, Prevent Rats, Shield and Sword, and Counter Traps.

Ways to get around it.
well, The main Problem with Speed vs. defensive is that Speed has to get over the walls.  On a Regular basis.

Stim Packs are what Chris uses.  I use Jirai's, but there are other possible ways.  Normal and more creative ways.

What does a deck like this have to fear.  HEAVY STORM and CARD DESTRUCTION.  the only things that would stay in their hand are good and saved for later.  The only things that would go on the field are usually traps.

Now, for Exodia, Speed wins and Card Destruction wins.  A Slow Control Deck probably doesn't have Card Destructions, or has one.  the Exodia player would bide its time, assembling the pieces.  So, to beat Exodia, beat-Down and Card Destruction (man its a useful card.

For Speed Decks - Chris and older versions of my deck are the speed decks.  They will burn out, but they will put a punding on you.  Stall for a time but BURN them out.  Some direct Damage is also good cause they can drive themselves pretty low sometimes.

Now, for more all-Around decks, they all get a certain tilt to them.  Mostly they have speed or a combo or something, but can cope with more.  An All-Around deck can face easily against Exodia, Control, and Speed.  If its more of all-around speed, it can be really good against the more, full tilt steam engines of some Creature horde decks.  But likewise, they can be disrupted by thee more defensive decks easier.

anyways, that is all for this week.  I am hoping next week is sanctioned, but then again, I was hoping for it being sanctioned 2-3 weeks ago.  oh well.
