"Quack Experimental Deck Yu-Gi-Oh Saga" by Tripping Billies (Curtis Schultz) 1st tournament report: December 8th, 2002 Dave's Card Shop Phoenix, AZ 24th and Osborne 16-player tournament I wanted to start by saying to the people I played against: If I screwed up and didn't get the match progression quite right, it is my own stupid fault. Everyone must realize how forgetful I am. On Saturdays I am only a judge. On Sundays I get to play, but I assist as a judge to help things move along smoothly and to help the newer players. I look at Sunday as my chance to really play and try to earn points in the league. (Aiming for that store champion goal.) This was my first tournament using Pharaoh's Servant cards. My deck was experimental and I was not positive it would meld right. I was the only person who could assist Dave at the store, so I couldn't play any practice duels before hand to test it. It would all rely on the work I had put into it before hand and how well I knew it. Trust in the "Heart of the Cards," as it were. A hot pocket to anyone who can get the reference in my Deck's name. ---------Deck Contents----------- ---Monsters (23) Barrel Dragon X 1 Beautiful Headhuntress X 1 (My lady) Cannon Soldier X 2 Cyber Jar X 1 The Fiend Megacyber X 1 Giant Soldier of Stone X 1 Goblin Attack Force X 1 Jinzo X 1 (Always and forever the "Android Psycho Shocker") Magician of Faith X 2 Maha Vailo X 2 Man-Eater Bug X 1 Mechanicalchaser X 3 (Yep.. that's right) Morphing Jar X 1 UFO Turtle X 2 Wall Illusion X 2 Witch of the Black Forest X 1 (Misses her sister) --Magic (12) Axe of Despair X 2 Change of Heart X 1 Heavy Storm X 1 Limiter Removal X 1 Megamorph X 1 Monster Reborn X 1 Nobleman of Crossout X 1 Pot of Greed X 1 Premature Burial X 1 Raigeki X 1 Swords of Revealing Light X 1 --Traps (11) Call of the Haunted X 1 Ceasefire X 1 DNA Surgery X 1 Imperial Order X 1 Magic Drain X 1 Magic Jammer X 1 Michizure X 1 Mirror Force X 1 Seven Tools of the Bandit X 2 Solemn Judgement X 1 --Sidedeck Buster Blader X 1 Morphing Jar #2 X 2 Card Destruction X 1 Delinquint Duo X 1 Fissure X 1 The Forceful Sentry X 1 Mystical Space Typhoon X 2 Snatch Steal X 1 Dragon Capture Jar X 2 Dust Tornado X 1 Graverobber X 1 Lightforce Sword X 1 --1st Round-- Tripping Billies Vs. Michael Rodriguez Micheal was a new duelist. First time in an official tournament. He had the same problem you see often with first time tournament players: a light knowledge of the rules. I took time with him to teach him how to play the game. His deck had way too many tribute monsters and this didn't help him any. He found himself without monsters several times. He had arrived planning on not having to tribute. He soon learned how it works in the official rules. I went slow and held myself back quite a bit to allow him time to digest the game, but that said the matches were pretty one-sided. When it was over I gave him advice on how to change his deck so he wouldn't have these problems anymore. Hopefully next time I see him he will made some changes and his deck will fair better. I don't think he stayed to watch the other duels, which he should do next time. Learn all you can, when you can. Winner: Tripping Billies --2nd Round-- Tripping Billies Vs. Luke Regan It is always interesting playing against Luke's Burner deck. You never know what he will get in his opening hand, but you know it will result in at least a 1000 LP direct damage. Possibly even more. If you aren't careful he will nail you with his traps. He had also implimented Pharaoh's Servant's burner aids, like the "Type-Zero Magic Crusher" and "Gravity Bind." As soon as we sat down together I went into my side deck to make some changes. Took the "Beautiful Headhuntress," a "Cannon Soldier," and the "Giant Soldier of Stone" out. Replaced them with 2 "Morphing Jar #2s" and a "Fissure." -1st round- This one went to Luke. My monsters were loaded with Equip cards to take him out next turn, but he managed to get two "Princess of Tsurugis." The direct damage that resulted caused a total of 5000 LP. I had a feeling the second one was coming, but there wasn't anything I could do to stop it. Either way, it would flipped. -2nd Round- The next match I came back strong. I used "Nobleman of Crossout" and eliminatated his face-down monsters. With that I used my "Limiter Removal" to take down his LP in one shot. -3rd Round- He got me for a 1000 in the early portion of the match, but my hand helped me to overwhelm him. I think his opening draw worked against him. He just couldn't overcome my offense. Winnder: Tripping Billies --3rd Round-- Tripping Billies Vs. Counterfushion24 This one worried me. Reynaldo and I play often at the tournaments and more so at the post-tournament Mc.Donalds duels. He keeps saying I have some advantage in tournament play, but I honestly don't understand why he says that. He said our matches would be quick, no matter who won. That turned out to be the case. I know how good he is and respect his power. Those who don't who learn a hard lesson. He was using a 1-round kill deck. Also using "Limiter Removal" and "Jinzo," like myself. -1st Round- He nailed me pretty bad this round. He had opened with a "Goblin Attack Force" in attack mode. Perhaps as intimidation. He had laid a trap down, but I decided to take the risk and brought out my "Maha Vailo" and gave it an "Axe of Despair." I successfully did both, but I had some concerns about "Mirror Force." Decided to go for it anyways, and took out the monster. Next turn he plays "Snatch Steal" on my "Maha Vailo," dishing out a massive 5050 LP direct. No coming back from that one. -2nd Round- I had to keep myself alive to try and win this thing. I can't remember each move of this one but it came down to who drew what. I managed to get my shots in this time. My "Magician of Faith" earned me my "Pot of Greed" several times, slowly building my hand to perform one decisive strike. -3rd Round- Same deal as last match. It was constant turn around, and it all came down to who drew what. I managed to get my "Limiter Removal" off. Narrow as it was. Looking forward to next time we play. It's almost always a close one with us. Win never guaranteed. The kids at the tournament should be watching him and learning. Winner: Tripping Billies (barely) --Final Round-- Tripping Billies Vs. Victor Teagle Victor is another of the store champions and never an easy opponent. He was using fushion monsters, so I was interested to know what I was in for. Not that I would ask what is in my opponent's deck. Wouldn't be right. Needless to say, this was another match where I knew I had to do my best. Turned out he was using a "Relinquished" & "Thousand-Eyes Restrict" deck. This ment I would need to be tactful if I wanted to win. -1st Round- Game of back and forth. I had a feeling that would happen. This match had the most interesting finish I had ever had. He brought out Relinquished and had it absorb my "Barrel Dragon." The direct shot at my LP brought us both down low. As low are our LP were (I was around 1350 and he was around 1900) I knew I had to be careful. I had no monsters on the field, and no traps. I did have one of my "Mechanicalchasers," my "Limiter Removal," and my "Megamorph." I knew if I attacked "Relinquished" with only one of the two I would also receive the damage done and next turn my monster would get absorbed anyways, so I decided to force a draw. I hooked the "Mechanicalchaser" with "Megamorph" and activated "Limiter Removal." The resulting attack reduced both of our LP to 0. -2nd Round- Now we had a strange situation. If we each won a match from here, we would have to play a sudden death to determine who wins. I went into this looking at each match counting as if it were my only chance. This one went on for some time, draining my deck down to almost nothing. I managed to get in the shots I needed. For a while I was faced with the knowledge Victor had "Mirror Force" in play, as I had seen it be sent to the graveyard and then reclaimed by the "Mask of Darkness." I couldn't just attack whenever I wanted. I had to get "Jinzo." I almost lost my advantage, were it not for my 2 "Seven Tools of the Bandit" which I had set and ready to use. I played "Monster Reborn," which led to a long string of counters that resulted in my opponent using a "Solemn Judgement" and a "Seven Tools." The loss of LP put Victor to low to come back from my attacks. -3rd Round- I knew I could lose this one and still have a chance to win in the end. But I didn't want to go that far. I set my opponent up by intentionally baiting his traps to activate. Most notibly his "Imperial Order" which was preventing me from using my "Pot of Greed," "Raigeki," and "Premature Burial." I decided to take a risk. I set these on the M/T zone along side my "Call of the Haunted" and "Solemn Judgement." I then set my "Morphing Jar" and waited to see what would happen. Victor attempted to soften my M/T zone with a "Heavy Storm,' but I took the hard knock and used my "Solemn Judgement." In the next turn I was going against his monsters with no traps to contend with. I flipped my "Morphing Jar" and obtained everything I need to go after him. I then played the "Call of the Haunted" to get one of my "UFO Turles." The other was already on the field as a result of the effect of the other which had been sent to the graveyard in the previous turn. I then played "Raigeki" which had also been set. With no monsters in my way I summoned a "Mechanicalchaser" I had pulled from the "Morphing Jar's" effect. I gave an "Axe of Despair" to it and one to a "UFO Turtle." The resulting damage was enough to bring him down to 350. Like an idiot, I hadn't left myself room to activate "Limiter Removal," which could have won me the match right then and there. I knew if I ended up losing I would have earned the loss. Next up was a mighty "Dark Hole." No way to stop that. Knew it would happen, since I had been so careless. I got lucky and my opponent set a monster. Next turn I had no monsters, but I did have a "Ceasefire," which I set. I had "Premature Burial" still, but I wanted to wait on using it. Victor drew. I decided to take the risk and activate my "Ceasefire." He couldn't stop it. His monster turned out to be an effect monster, which won me the duel due to "Ceasefire's" effect.. Winner: Tripping Billies Counterfushion said I was gutsy using Morphing Jar #2. It helped me quite a bit in the matches against Victor, so I have to say it isn't a bad thing to me. So long as it is not used at the wrong time. (Such as when I have more than one monster on my side of the field.) Tournament Pack: "Dharma Cannon," "Sky Dragon," and "Spirit of the Books." I ended up trading them for other tournament pack commons, the "Dancing Elf" and "Turu Purin." I never pull rares in the tourney packs at Dave's, but with my Chasers and "Morphing Jar" I have no right to complain. Shout Outs--- To all the players. We couldn't hold tournaments without you. Life isn't the same without ya. Always good to have you all around. Reynaldo for helping to get all the decks checked and handle rulings when I was watching other matches. And for being the all around cool guy and supreme duelist he is. Dave for hosting the tournaments and getting it organized. Upperdeck for getting Pharaoh's Servant legal in time for the weekend. And for the excellent work on the rulings for Pharaoh's Servant. (Getting Konami to take it seriously this time.) To Mr. Submarine for my large Dr. Slice that gives me sugar fuel and for not knowing what their pickles were (again). --Feel free to send all cheers, jears, and Menchi recipes to: Curtis757@hotmail.com-- Today's Experiment...
