Belgium Interview – Wim Eliano

By Ally

Pojo Screen Name: Pojo.com Forums - View Profile: TheRealSuicidal

Ally: First I like to thank you for taking some time out of your fun fill life to do this interview with me. It's always a pleasure to interview someone that doesn't live in the USA. Hopefully some of our readers get a bit of insight about the metas that are not just in the USA.

Wim: You’re welcome x].

Ally: Alright, for my first question what is your full name?

Wim: Wim Eliano.

Ally: How old are you?

Wim: I will be 21 years old on December 3rd.

Ally: Awww birthday coming up soon. Happy early birthday to you :].

Wim: Thank you ^_^.

Ally: Can you tell the readers a little about yourself?

Wim: I’m made of awesomeness and win, been playing Yu-Gi-Oh! for three years now, I work full time as an industrial cleaner/asbestos remover, like to go out with my friends, playing sports, sleeping, and God knows I love sleeping.

Ally: I couldn't tell that you love sleeping hehe. You said you been playing for three years now? What was your first Yu-Gi-Oh! experience like?

Wim: I lost to Blue-Eyes White Dragon ;_;.

Wim: Which was an awesome monster in those days.

Wim: But I didn't get into the game until later on, mind you I was a student in those days, and students like to spend cash on different things.

Wim: I really got into Yu-Gi-Oh! when I pulled a tournament pack four (tp4) Royal Decree on the first day of tp4's release and gave the Royal Decree to a friend who collects rather then selling it for 300 + on ebay.

Wim: Since that day I play with his cards.

Ally: Poor you! Oh well it happens. Even though in those days make you sound old when you're the same age as me :P (well about to be). What was the first deck you ever built?

Wim: Exodia lol; my locals didn't know about the forbidden list and the only sets were LOB - MRL – MRD.

Wim: So yeah three Sangans and three Witche of the Black Forest was pretty hot.

Ally: Sangan and Witch were at three at that time? Wow, brokenness I'll say lol. Do you still go to the same locals as you do now? What's your locals meta like if so?

Wim: My local meta consists of four players whom I destroy on occasionally.

Wim: Meta in Belgium is pretty much the same as the US meta which is lots of monarchs and zombies.

Ally: Do you think that Light and Darkness Dragon will completely destroy Zombies and Monarch decks? A lot of people been saying that Light and Darkness Dragon is hard to get out but what is your thoughts on that?

Wim: Light and Darkness hype is totally misplaced.

Wim: It's a pretty inconsistent deck, and lacks speed over samurais and zombies.

Ally: You know people are still going to try and build Light And Darkness Dragon decks. Got any advice to those who do want to try and build it?

Wim: Yes I do.

Wim: Don’t build it and don’t sack me with a crappy dragon please XD.

Wim: No in all seriousness it can be good.

Wim: But it isn’t the best deck in the format.

Wim: The tip I can give the deck builders do not stare blind at the Japanese builds.

Wim: The Japanese meta is way different then ours.

Ally: Do you think this is why a lot of people fail at deck building, because he or she thinks "The Japanese know what their talking about since they own every card in the game, so I'm going to net deck them!"

Wim: No the point they fail is the fact they blindly netdeck SJC top lists, don't learn how to play with them, and think “Oh? This won it must be autopilot.”

Wim: Don't get me wrong.

Wim: I don't care if you netdeck.

Wim: But if you do it please learn to play the deck inside-out first.

Ally: Hopefully people do take that advice. What is your view on Enishi? You mentioned earlier about Six Samurais, so you think the card gave the deck a big boost or you think it will stay below top 16 range of a SJ?

Wim: Enishi is not the new moneymaker of samurai.

Wim: Spirit of the Six Samurai and Cunning however are.

Wim: Those cards are ridiculous.

Wim: Abuse Grandmaster more plz.

Ally: Do you think Cunning and Spirit might get a limitation then since they make the Six Samurai deck powerful?

Wim: Nope, because they’re fairly balance.

Wim: Spirit isn’t even run able in twos in my opinion.

Wim: ^^

Ally: Oh I see. Do you think Grandmaster needs to be limited or semi-limited? If so why?

Wim: Hell No.

Wim: I bought a playset for $120 US dollars XD.

Wim: Because some regions in the world did not get a sneak preview grandmaster promo >_<.

Wim: But I don't feel it should be limited to one; semi-limited is a possibility though. UDE will probably just sit back and see what's gonna happen ;p.

Wim: Fact is if the six sam player gets a good hand with a grandmaster in hand; it's very hard for the opponent to make a fist.

Wim: You can't destroy it without losing advantage of some sort.

Ally: Alright, moving on, what are some of your credentials?

Wim: I won the 2006 Belgian Nats, won the Summer Cup 2006, placed 5th in the 2007 Belgian nationals (losing in quarters to eventual winner meh), and fresh of a Pharaoh Tour Stop win. I also top regularly.

Ally: What was wining Belgian Nats '06 like for you? What deck did you run?

Wim: It was kinda cool ;p. I ran a deck which me and my Dutch friends made.

Wim: Emon was fresh off some Shonen Jump win with his chaos return the day before nats.

Wim: So we decided to counter that strategy which had three maindecked Dusts, Cyberstien, and Last Will.

Wim: I went 10-0 with that deck baby.

Wim: We kept the deck a secret though and a week later my friend got second at his nats a month later he won Euros.

Ally: Impressive. How much of a shock was it when you won Belgium Nationals '06?

Wim: It wasn't really a shock, everyone good scrubbed out except for Sebastian Gonzalez and Thibault Coppens.

Wim: Seb lost in quarters to Thibault, and I had the better match up in the finals vs Thibault.

Wim: So it was the logical outcome, but still it's ygoz.

Wim: We celebrated ;p.

Ally: Was your matchup with Thibault difficult for you or an easy victory?

Wim: I drew good he drew not so good :p.

Wim: He played a machine chaos build.

Wim: I had answers to whatever he did so it was a relative easy match up.

Ally: How was Belgium Nats '07 for you?

Wim: A nightmare >_<. I played an OD burn deck and in round three I go against a noob with Demise!

Wim: He gets off his combo twice despite my 70000000 counters in the deck, so I’m like great I’m done for XD.

Wim: I win out in seeds and 3rd in tops!

Wim: I play this monarch dude. Game 1 he wins, because I open with triple Stealth Birds, Scapegoat, and wave wave in hand.

Wim: Game 2 I win.

Wim: Game 3 I have game set up he tops PoA into Mobuis, so I have to make a draw with the untargeted Ring of Destruction. He killed Force and Cylinder.

Wim: Game 4 he opens with Confiscation with every card he needed. So yeah YGO!

Ally: Wow I'm sorry that happened to you. Well, how was Euros for you both years?

Wim: Year one ( 2006 ) was a blowout, I overslept because the hotel didn't give me a wake-up call, I got just in time for the 1st round (about 10 minutes spare) without a deck but yeah that’s ygo, so I assemble some crap and scrub to a 3-4 d1.

Wim: Year 2, I start out day one with a pretty sexy 6-1 record.

Wim: And day 2 was a letdown once again.

Wim: Couldn't draw decent all day 2 and slumped to 7-5.

Ally: What were you running at both Euro Nats?

Wim: Euros 2006: decree chaos.

Wim: Euros 2007: Theerasak.dek.

Ally: How was your Summer Cup experience? What is a Summer Cup?

Wim: A summer cup is hard to explain. The Summer Cup people take ten stores all over Belgium who hold qualifiers, six qualifiers per a store final. Each winner qualifies to the store final.

Wim: The winners of those had to duke it at a round robin tournament. Each store champion gets a nice lil trophy with a shiny card. The national winner ( me LOL ) XD got a Chimeratech ultimate rare in a trophy of plexi glass.

Wim: It's actually a misprint Chimera.

Ally: How was it misprinted?

Wim: It’s missing parts of the name.

Ally: What did you run for the Summer Cup? How was the Pharaoh Tour for you?

Wim: I ran monarchs with a side into full stein.

Wim: I dropped after losing to Megarock Dragon.

Wim: Tough Beats.

Ally: Alright, what was your first regional experience like?

Wim: Wow that's a hella long time ago lol.

Wim: I lost in the finals with a burn deck.

Wim: It was when no stall except gravity bind existed.

Wim: So I locked them with DNA Surgery and dragon capture jar.

Wim: Epic times those were.

Ally: No insect barrier?

Wim: Nah dragon capture jar was pro.

Wim: Also I had no insect barriers lol.

Ally: Aw I see. What decks do you like to build for fun?

Wim: I can build pretty much anything I want, I switch decktypes every tournament to keep it fun.

Wim: But at the moment I like six samurais.

Ally: How does your six samurai build look?

Wim: Pretty standardized pre - glas samurais =p.

Wim: However I’m quite impressed with the deck Adrian Madaj delivered at pharaoh tour Hamburg.

Ally: What type of build was that?

Wim: It was samurais, no reasoning, no rota's , tech backs to the wall, tech united we stand, three maindeck cyber phoenix, and a sidedeck to gadgets.

Wim: Took everyone by surprise.

Ally:
Got any new decks planned for the future besides Samurais?

Wim: Yes but itz a secret.

Wim: You guys will find out in time.

Wim: It's that big of a secret that I don't know what it is either.

Wim: some well known North American metagame player is hooking me up with something rather seksi so I heard.

Ally: What's the next event you’re going to? Are you bringing your secret deck to it or your Six Samurai deck?

Wim: Next event is the pharaoh tour finals 2007.

Wim: Winner takes home a Sarcophagus.

Wim: And it'll be the secret deck ;p.

Ally: How well does your secret deck test?

Wim: I have no idea as it’s not mine.

Wim: And I haven’t seen it yet.

Wim: But the player who has it is not a small fish in the pond ;x.

Ally: You really excited about going to the Pharaohs tour final?

Wim: Been there twice, so I know what to expect; we'll see on the day itself on how it goes.

Ally: What do you think the most dominant deck type will be at the finals?

Wim: Monarch.

Wim: It’s all the people here know xD.

Ally: Oh I see. Onto a different topic, what are your thoughts about the forbidden list?

Wim: It's decent at the moment.

Wim: Nothing is unbalanced IMO.

Wim: I'd love to see them bring back imperial order though

Wim: Seeing as how I have 40 of them XD.

Ally: If you had to make changes what would they be?

Wim: That's a hard one.

Wim: Feels to me that gadgets need to be put back to three, doesn't matter at two or three.

Wim: We really need the goat lists back though :p.

Wim: three goat, three meta, three tsuk.

Wim: <3

Wim: three ter of course.

Ally: You're crazy!

Wim: Maybe I am.

Ally: I don't mind goat format back, but Tsuki can stay away ^_^.

Ally: You’re for more of a diverse list then?

Wim: I like a list where basically any deck is playable.

Wim: And I feel with this list everything is playable.

Wim: But like three lists ago the only playable deck was chaos.

Wim: That's no fun =)

Ally: Do you think Raiza should be limited?

Wim: Nope

Wim: He's not broken at all

Wim: If you are to limit monarchs then you are definitely doing it wrong

Ally: How do you think people should do it if you want to kill monarchs?

Wim: leave it alone =p.

Wim: It’s not overly broken decktype.

Ally:
Oh I see. Interview is almost over L. Do you have any advice to give out to the new players that just started the game?

Wim: Yeah go to a local store and have yourself taught by the best player you can find there, invest in a deck, and make a profit.

Ally: That's some good advice. Thank you for the interview Wim. Would you like to make a closing statement?

Wim: Yugioh! is serious business!
