Weej's Different Perspective
Perspectives that are Different:
Better Late than Never: My 2 cents on the Ban List
Article #1 | 08/04/05

Today we’re going to open up one of the other sections on my page. We have “Concepts to Duel By”, “Deck Builder’s Guide” and “Different Perspectives”. Before my computer went out, I was planning on writing my own bit on what I think needs to be banned, should stay banned, and should be un banned. Unfortunately, my computer got messed up and that was the reason that I couldn’t write articles until two weeks later.

While we still have a good two or so months before October 1st, I felt it necessary to write my own opinions on the list for the site after seeing all of the other writers write them. Personally, I don’t really agree with some of the things that the other writers have been saying about the list, especially Dark Paladin’s list. (Uh-oh, I don’t think I was supposed to blurt that out.. oh well.) xD

The first thing is this: this list is more luck-oriented than any other list thus far. It’s obvious, but it must be mentioned. The second thing is, that it doesn’t detract anything or hold the game or the environment back one bit: the game has always been based on whoever is the luckiest. Skill can help a player survive, if the opponent draws what they need, then victory is most surely theirs.

Anyway, here’s what I think the next Ban List will look like – I’ll give a little insight into why said cards are on the list, of course. (Remember, this is just MY opinion on the list, it is not the actual list.)

You cannot use the following cards in your Deck or Side Deck:

Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning
Catapult Turtle
Chaos Emperor Dragon – Envoy of the End
Change of Heart
Harpie’s Feather Duster
Delinquent Duo
Imperial Order
Mirage of Nightmare
Pot of Greed
The Forceful Sentry
Confiscation
Raigeki
Yata-Garasu
Witch of the Black Forest
Premature Burial
Call of the Haunted

What goes on: Delinquent Duo, Pot of Greed, Premature Burial, Call of the Haunted, Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning, Catapult Turtle

What comes off: Painful Choice, Dark Hole, Monster Reborn, Magical Scientist, Fiber Jar, Makyura the Destructor, Butterfly Dagger – Elma,

Here’s what I think should be added to the restricted list:
Magician of Faith

Scapegoat

You might be thinking this list is crazy, and rightfully so. I’ll break it down for you.

Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning finally bows out and retires. The menacing Delinquent Duo, which, in my opinion is nowhere near as bad as Confiscation and The Forceful Sentry, joins its brothers. Catapult Turtle is banned to stop the Magical Scientist FTK, which is the only reason that Magical Scientist is banned in the first place – the Scientist returns in all his Swiss-army knife glory, to the digress of many players. Pot of Greed gets banned because first of all, it isn’t in the upcoming Legend of Warrior Structure Deck – all cards that have been placed in the Structures have matched the ban list in which they were released. Pot of Greed, Premature Burial, and Call of the Haunted are not in the deck, so they are banned. Secondly, Pot of Greed isn’t that bad on it’s own, but when used multiple times with Magician of Faith, it becomes nasty, the Saint Magician also gets restricted to one. To compensate for the lack of monster recursion, Monster Reborn comes back in full force, with Painful Choice to aid it since both the Envoys will be banned. Fiber Jar comes back to reset the game once more, and to help take it out, none other than the all-powerful Dark Hole!

Some people might say that following the Structure Deck lists is a dumb idea, but each of the lists tailored for the format they were being released in. There were no cards in the decks that would have been banned at the time at which the decks were released. Look closely at the Legend of Warrior deck list. There is no Pot of Greed, there is no Premature Burial, and there is no Call of the Haunted. All of them are going to be banned next format. Konami tried to make it look less obvious by having nice cards put in there like two Reinforcement of the Army and Royal Decree. They are nice cards, but be warned, there will be a huge lack of recursion in the next environment, and Dark Hole + Heavy Storm will easily be the most powerful move a duelist can throw at an opponent.

Scapegoat, which honestly I have doubts as to being restricted, where be better if it were. It would stop the abuse, and allow Metamorphosis to keep it’s own archetype. Magician of Faith will probably be Restricted, but don’t be surprised if it isn’t if Dark Hole is coming back after all.

Honestly, I think the next list, if it is anything like this, is going to be great. With both Envoy’s banned, Warrior decks will rule, but with their trump card gone, they will finally give other deck types a chance to keep up with them.

Then again, if Black Luster Soldier isn’t banned, or if Chaos Emperor Dragon replaces it, then sweet hell will break lose. Who’s the say one or the another won’t happen? While scary, we don’t have a definite answer, and we all know how unpredictable Konami can really be.

So what’s really going to be on the next ban list? No one knows for sure, and only time will tell.. October 1st, here we come!
