DeathJester's Dojo
DeathJester’s Orlando 10-07-2006 Regional Report !

by Bryan Camareno a.k.a. DeathJester
October - Friday the 13th, 2006

Hey everyone! Welcome back to DeathJester’s Dojo. This week I have a Tournament Report for you of my most recent Regional Qualifier performance.

The night before the event I was prepping everything. I made sure I did this early because I absolutely hate being rushed in the morning before a Regional. I packed my deck, 2 copies of my deck list, extra copies of the cards in my Main-Deck (theft DOES happen), and other essentials.

So I wake up at 7 in the morning and leave 8:15. I had to pick up my friend Alex Faraldo at his house in Orlando (I live in Sanford, 20 minutes north) on the way to the event. After getting there I immediately head to the registration table. I came an hour or so early for the purpose of warming up before the event.

I find my teammate Andre Correa; he was the Head Judge of that Regional. I also saw the NeXus front-runners: Frank Debrito, John Jensen, Jason Zigander, Paul Lyn, etc. Debrito and Jensen decided to Judge that day. I also saw Joe Fitzgerald and Jeff Piroozshad. I also met up with my friends from Jacksonville: Elmo Gonzales and Jonathan Barber.

After greeting everyone I walk a little further down the aisle and find two more friends of mine from the Central Florida area: C.J and Rudy Plourde. Rudy had just won the Regional in Jacksonville the week before and I went over to congratulate him. I decided to take the time to get his take on the format and luckily I brought print-outs of the latest Regional Top 8s.

I decided that we should get a couple games in. I was eager to get warmed up with my deck before the tournament. Luckily I did. I got about 5 games in before the tournament started against 2 Monarch Control decks. I beat C.J. 2-1 and I was tied 1-1 with Rudy before they announced Player Seatings. They told me I had a great deck and that I would do well. I thanked them for the compliment and went on my way.

And now…the Judge Announcements

I’ll be the first to admit, Judge Announcements are boring. I am a Judge too! Sorry Andre…he had the toughest time getting across to all 204 players. He didn’t have the PA system setup yet. Instead, he opted to use a chair in the center of the hall. That’s Andre for you.

The Swiss Rounds

Round 1

Bryan Camareno (Zombie) vs. Jose (Chimeratech OTK)

This match was a good one. I won the die roll and opted to go first. It was pretty hard for him to deal damage to me in the first game. I had removed all of his Cyber Dragons from play so there was no hope of an Overload Fusion or Future Fusion. That one ended quickly.

The next game was MUCH closer. He had seemed to be drawing nothing all game, but I started catching on and knew he was waiting for a Cyber Dragon to hit the Graveyard to play a good Overload Fusion for the win. Turns out, I couldn’t push through enough damage without putting myself at serious risk of losing. I didn’t want to give him any openings. However, he did get a hold of his Giant Trunade and cleared the board against my 3 Scapegoat Tokens and lone Ryu Kokki. He Fusion Summoned Chimeratech with Overload Fusion + 5 Machines and then played Limiter Removal to boost him up (8000 ATK versus my 2400 ATK Kokki). I was at 4300; ouch.

I decided to Side-Deck in my 2 copies of Waboku since the first game didn’t really tell me about the capabilities of his deck. The third game turned out to be heavily in my favor when I chained Waboku in response to his Heavy Storm. I was able to finish him very quickly with an early Ryu Kokki and a Creature Swap play.

Score:

Game 1:

Me: 8000-7000

Jose: 8000-7700-5700-3700-1700-0

Game 2:

Me: 8000-6400-5700-5000-4300-0

Jose: 8000-6400-6100-4500-4200-3400

Game 3:

Me: 8000-7400

Jose: 8000-5600-4100-2400-0

Record: 1-0

Round 2

Bryan Camareno (Zombie) vs. Zac Pelo (Toolbox/Monarch)

I didn’t know Zac very well, but I heard he was a friend of Johnny Bidelspach. The first game started off very close. Each of us exchanged hits, blocked attacks. During the mid-game I took the lead in Life Points with a Creature Swap combo. He countered 2 turns later with a devastating Zaborg setup and won the first one.

Between games I decided to side in some Cyber Dragons and Gorillas since I knew he would Side-Deck some Banishers. We get started with the second game. I set 1 in each zone. Lo and behold! He plays MST on my face-down Bottomless, then drops a Banisher of the Radiance and knocks out my Giant Rat. Next turn I drop Breaker the Magical Warrior, break his face-down Mirror Force and destroy his Banisher via kamikaze. Threat averted.

After that I took quite a few LP of damage just to solidify my board position via recruiters. After taking control of the game, I eventually won it.

The third game proved to be extremely tough as well. This guy’s deck has a defense as tough as a brick wall. The game eventually stalled out with Scapegoats. Neither of us could really get control of the game which caused us to top-deck for about 6 turns straight. Time was called with me sitting at 3200 and him at 4600. I couldn’t deal any damage so I ended up losing. I was packing my stuff while he was making his moves because I knew he had won on the last turn. I thought he was being rude by playing it out, but it turns out that he didn’t know what the turn-count was! Lol.

Score:

Game 1:

Me: 8000-6600-6500-5500-5200-4200-3200-1800-0

Game 2:

Me: 8000-6500-5500-5200-4800

Zac: 8000-7000-6700-5700-5400-3400-3300-2900-1300-0

Game 3:

Me: 8000-7400-6100-4300-4200-3200-Time

Zac: 8000-7200-6900-6500-6200-5900-5000-4600

Record: 1-1

Round 3

Bryan Camareno (Zombie) vs. Paul Lyn (Cyber-Stein OTK)

I was so excited to play Paul. Playing him is always fun. He always has the most innovative decks and an in-game dialogue that prevents me from keeping a straight face. He did teach me a real nifty technique to catch cheaters who draw extra cards.

Game 1 started off pretty well, but went down hill for him pretty fast after about turn 5 when he dropped Stein. I BTHed his Cyber Twin or Cyber End (I forget which one). I Creature Swapped a Pyramid Turtle over for some major damage and he couldn’t draw his way out of it.

Game 2 I sided in Cyber Dragons and a Waboku. Again, it starts out even and I quickly end up at 4000 LP. His board position starts to slip after a couple turns, but managed to bring it back a little with Nimble Momonga. I didn’t seem like it was a good day for him. He kept drawing horribly and couldn’t keep a good defense up against me. So I ended up winning with enough pressure on the board. After the match he told me had sided into Monarch Control (I didn’t even see a single Monarch, but he showed me the Monarchs afterward).

Score:

Game 1:

Me: 8000-7000-4900-4000

Paul: 8000-7700-2700-2400-0

Game 2:

Me: 8000-5600-4000

Paul: 8000-7700-5100-4800-5800-6800-6000-4400-3400-0

Record: 2-1

Round 4

Bryan Camareno (Zombie) vs. Josh (Warrior Toolbox)

This match was pretty interesting. Josh was running a deck that packed Magic Cylinder and I think Ceasefire as well. Game 1 was extremely close. We stayed toe-to-toe in the match with neither one of us wanting to let up. I barely won this match with only 1500 LP.

Game 2 was another close game and he managed to slap down a well placed Zaborg for a crushing finish. Game 3 was yet another crazy game that went to end of match procedure. I won the match on the first turn.

Score:

Game 1:

Me: 8000-6400-5500-1500

Josh: 8000-6400-5600-600-0

Game 2:

Me: 8000-5900-5500-4000-1900-0

Josh: 8000-6600-5600-3500

Game 3:

Me: 8000-7600-7300-6200-4600-3600

Josh: 8000-6400-2800-0

Record: 3-1

Round 5

Bryan Camareno (Zombie) vs. Kevin (Monarch Control)

If I recall correctly, Kevin is from Team Untouchables. He’s a very cool guy and has a good attitude about the game.

We started Game 1 pretty quickly. He knocked me down to 5600 LP very quickly and I had to take the risk and ram my recruiters into his larger monsters to take control of the game with Ryu Kokki and Vampire Lord. He had me on the ropes because he starting make a comeback in this game.

Game 2 was another close one. He won that one.

Game 3 was pretty intense. We both start off relatively conservative with our plays. I try to get through his Scapegoat tokens with Twin-Headed Behemoth on my side. Next turn he slaps down a Cyber-Stein and pays 5000LP for a Cyber End on my Sheep Tokens. I take 4000 and pays for Premature Burial.

Next turn, I get rid of his Cyber End and I hit him for 1500 LP. He’s at 700. All I had to do was draw some creatures bit enough to get through his defense and he was through. This was an excellent game.

Score:

Game 1:

Me: 8000-6600-5800-5600-3500-1400

Kevin: 8000-7300-2900-2400-1600-600-0

Game 2:

Me: 8000-6500-5700-5400-3000-600-0

Kevin: 8000-5600-3800-2700-1900

Game 3:

Me: 8000-4000

Kevin: 8000-3000-2200-700-0

Record: 4-1

Round 6

Bryan Camareno (Zombie) vs. Rudy Pluorde (Monarch Control)

This match was a major surprise. We were both very anxious to play each other. We played earlier and we knew each other’s decks so it all came down to the execution of strategy.

Game 1 was extremely close. I had a tough time dealing with his Spies and he was rocking me a bit with his Granmarg. I eventually won with a Ryu Kokki.

Game 2 was a heartbreaker for Rudy. I started off with a turn 2 or 3 Deck Devastation Virus on my Ryu Kokki. I knocked out 2 monsters from his hand and 2 monsters on the next two draws. I dominated the field trying to get it in as much damage as possible (You can tell from the score). He dropped a Zaborg a few turns later, I counter with Creature Swap.

He was able to draw into Spy, and other creatures to keep him alive. He wanted to play another Zaborg in a few turns but I was ready for him. I had already side-decked a My Body as a Shield and I had a Bottomless Trap Hole face-down as well. He couldn’t comeback.

This match was awesome. Rudy is a great player and can really give you a run for your money.

Score:

Game 1:

Me: 8000-7000-4900-4100-3800-3300-2700

Rudy: 8000-6600-5800-3800-3100-2300-0

Game 2:

Me: 8000-7200-6800-5450-3850-2850-2650-2050-1850-1450

Rudy: 8000-6650-6050-4350-4150-3150-2350-0

Record: 5-1

Round 7

Bryan Camareno (Zombie) vs. Barry Nibert (Monarch Control)

Barry Nobert is a member of Team Paradise. Their team is based out of Mount Dora, not TOO far from where I live. I know a lot of people on this team and they are all great guys. Barry was one of the more serious ones. He didn’t talk very much. He was very focused on the upcoming match.

Game 1 I opened Twin-Headed Behemoth and a set Ring of Destruction. He sets one to each zone. The following turn I declare an attack with Twin-Headed, he uses Ring. The following turn he flips his set Tomato and attacks, I activate Ring of Destruction. We’re both now at 4100. He set a monster. I summon Breaker, break then, hit his set monster; it was Dekoichi I think. Next turn he drops Cyber Dragon and hit my counterless Breaker. He has no backfield. I have Turtle and Creature Swap in my hand. I draw Book of Life on this turn. I had a Pyramid Turtle in the Graveyard from my Graceful Charity early on. I summon Turtle play Book of Life, get another Turtle and play Swap. I rush with two Ryu Kokki.

Game 2 he opens strongly with Confiscation. I am able to get a foothold on the game a few turns later with Ryu Kokki and a set Deck Devastation. He tries to destroy my Ryu and I chain Deck Devastation. The nets me about 4 monsters in total from his hand & deck. This was my chance to strike back and I did.

About 2 turns later he attempts a comeback with Zaborg and I chain My Body as a Shield! The turn after that I tribute for Ryu Kokki, then Book of Life a Vampire Lord and strike at him with the rest of my monsters.

Score:

Game 1:

Me: 8000-6500-4100-3600

Barry: 8000-6500-4100-2400-0

Game 2:

Me: 8000-5900-4100-3600-2100

Barry: 8000-7000-6500-5700-4900-2500-0

Record: 6-1

Round 8

Bryan Camareno (Zombie) vs. Paul (Zombie)

This match was awesome. The LAST thing I expected to see at Table 6 in Round 8 of a Regional Qualifier in Orlando. I did not expect a mirror match. I thought I was the only one with a Zombie deck!

I won the die roll in Game 1 and I opened with Confiscation. I IMMEDIATELY saw what he was playing. I said to myself “No freaking way…I got this”. I say this because I am EXTREMELY confident that no one can play Zombies like I do. It’s not an arrogant statement, it’s a fact. No one can play your deck like you play it right? That makes you UNIQUE. Ask anyone. Have you ever seen anyone play Zombies like me? Nope; you never will.

Back on topic, the Confiscation play pretty much gave me the information I needed to cripple him for a few turns. If I remember correctly, his hand was Cyber, Breaker, Ryu Kokki, Nobleman, Creature Swap. I chose Breaker, then I summoned Turtle and set BTH. He summons Cyber Dragon, I respond with my BTH. He stays at bay for a good 4 turns.

Later into the game I still have control of the game staving off his Kokkis and pull off the win with Creature Swap/Pyramid Turtle.

Game 2 was pretty close and I admit I was getting anxious. I think I was a bit careless with my LP, but that anxiousness kept me very focused for the win.

Score:

Game 1:

Me: 8000-7000-5800-5000

Paul: 8000-7800-5400-4400-2000-400-0

Game 2:

Me: 8000-6600-5200-1800

Paul: 8000-7000-5900-3900-1500

Record: 7-1

I made the Top 8!

With a 7-1 record I finish 5th place in the Swiss. I was given lots of props and I was very proud of my performance. Even Donald Kiss told me I was one of his predictions to make Top 8.

In the Top 8 I was paired up against Jason Zigander, the famous deck-builder of Team NeXus. He was running a Monarch Control deck with Warriors and a teched Apprentice Magician search engine. Very good deck and he whipped me pretty badly with it. Here are the scores.

Game 1:

Me: 8000-7500-7100-4700-2300-0

Jason: 8000

Game 2:

Me: 8000-7100-6100-4700-2400-1000-0

Jason: 8000-7000-3200-1500

Game 2 was very favorable for me. He opened very strongly in both games. I almost made a comeback in the second game. I won’t make any excuses, he whipped me and I’m 110% determined to make Top 4 at the Fort Lauderdale Regional.

Props:

  • Everyone rooting for me and pushing me to play at my full potential.
  • Making Top 8
  • The fantastic Judging by Andre Correa, Franklin Debrito, John Jensen, and Joshua Zawada.
  • My opponents for being great sportsmen and solid opponents.
  • My Body as a Shield for scoring me some wins.

Slops:

ˇ        Not eating for 6 hours…I had NO break until Round 7 after I played Barry Nibert.

ˇ        Me not siding Drillroid for the event.

ˇ        Never having to side Chiron the Mage.

Final Thoughts…

Thank you everyone for reading my first Tournament Reports ever posted on Pojo.com. It was written and published in true Pojo.com style. You can expect many more Tournament Reports from the major events I attend in the upcoming season. I’m making this a habit. If you have any questions or comments, please email me at: deathjester86@gmail.com.

I STILL have that mail bag idea going, but I need more questions to answer. I very rarely do deck fixes since they take so much time for me to do. If my advice and articles have helped you become a better player, don’t be shy and let me know. I’ll post those testimonials up on my Blog: TheBestYugiohBlog.blogspot.com. Go there and post your comments. I’ve designed it so that anyone can post. You do not have to sign up for Blogger.com.

If you would like to link my Blog to your website, please email me first for my permission. If you would like to network your Blog with mine, email me at: deathjester86@gmail.com. I’m also very interested in RSS feeds. I’m working on getting this Blog to make RSS and XML feeds available to you so you have constant updates about what I am up to.

Thanks again for reading everyone! Until next time remember to play hard, think about your moves, and most importantly…have fun!
