Duel Monsters 7 – Duel City Legend!
March
22, 2006

Awhile back I did an article showcasing the promo cards that were released in the Japanese Yu-Gi-Oh! game for Gameboy Advanced, Duel Monsters 6 Expert 2. Today I have a similar article in store as I look into the promo cards that came packaged in the next game in the Duel Monsters series, Yu-Gi-Oh! DM7 – Duel City Legend! (Released in the U.S. under the name “The Sacred Cards” with different promos included, of course.) DM7 was the first of a two part series of Yu-Gi-Oh! dueling R.P.G.s (role playing games). DM7’s main focus is to let the player duel alongside (and against) Yugi , Jounouchi, and other famous characters from the Yu-Gi-Oh! universe as a friend and fellow Battle City duelist!

This game is mainly focused on playing through the events of the Battle City story arc of the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime and manga. This games duels are played with slightly different rules than that of the real CCG, but it’s a fun and compelling game that fans of the CCG and series can really get into! I actually played this game for about eight hours straight the day I purchased it, finally defeating Yami Malik at about 5 in the morning, which was definitely a challenge.

Now onto the promotional cards!

GB7-001
F-G-D ("FIVE GOD DRAGON")
Fusion Monster
Dark/Dragon/Level 12/ATK 5000/ DEF 5000
This Monster can only be Special Summoned by a Fusion Summon.
This card is Fusion Summoned by fusing 5 Dragon Sub-Type
Monsters. This card doesn't receive Battle Damage from Earth,
Water, Fire, Air or Dark Main-Type Monsters.

The first card I’ll be looking at today is F-G-D, or the Five God Dragon! FGD is a famous card among fans of the anime and is one of the two highest attack monsters in the game! (the other being Dragon Master Knight, which I am also reviewing in this article.) The only problem is getting this giant dragon to the field takes a lot of work, since it can only be fused by five dragon sub-type monsters. There are some easy ways to achieve this though. A favorite of mine would be to use a card like DNA Operation to change every monster on the field into a dragon, then play cards that can easily create tokens like Scapegoat and Dandylion.

Dragon’s Mirror can be a godsend in a dragon deck that utilizes FGD because it’s far easier to just dump a bunch of weaker dragons into the cemetery and then remove them all to special summon this card. Cards like Troop Dragon, Masked Dragon, and any other Dragon type searcher comes in handy in a strict Dragon’s Mirror FGD build. FGD itself is more of a gargantuan beatstick then a true effect monster. Its effect protects it from getting destroyed in battle with a monster of any element except Light and Dark, but with 5000 attack and defense points there is no other monster that can really compete with it anyway!

GB7-002
IRON DEMON VISER DEATH
Dark/Demon/Level 4/ATK 500/DEF 1200
When this card is successfully Normal Summoned, 1 selected
Monster of your opponent is destroyed during your third Standby
Phase. Until the end of the effect, this card can't be destroyed
as a result of Battle. (Damage Calculation is done as normal.)

Viser Death is one of Yami Maliks torture cards from both the Duel City Legend game and the later manga chapters of the Battle City story arc. For those of you who have only seen the anime version of Battle City you may not remember this card because it was replaced with that of Maliks Plasma Eel. This was only because Viser Death was released to the CCG as this card with a changed effect. In the manga it would equip on a monster and lower its attack by 500 each turn, now it has a kind of destruction effect. Just so the players would not be confused on two different occasions new cards were created in the anime to fill the place where Malik would use Viser Death, this resulted in the creation of Holding Arms and Plasma Eel.

After our little history of Viser Death there’s not much more to say about this card. It has a weak destruction effect that can only be used when Viser Death is normal summoned (no flip or special summon this time). To pull off this effect Viser must survive on the field for at least three turns! Not being able to be destroyed in battle helps a little bit, but with so much easy monster removal going around, Viser seems a bit out of date (even though it was still a bad card back in the day). I would still play three in a Malik themed torture deck though, it really fits his theme and is one of the more iconic cards he played in the manga.

GB7-003
MASTER OF DRAGON KNIGHT
Fusion Monster
Light/Dragon/Level 12/ATK 5000/DEF 5000
[Chaos Soldier] + [Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon]
This Monster can only be Special Summoned by a Fusion Summon.
Increase this card's attack strength by 500 for each Dragon
Sub-Type Monster on your Field, excluding this one.

Besides FGD, this is the strongest monster (attack and defense wise) in the game. It can actually become stronger than FGD if situation allows it. The only problem with this card is it is far harder to summon then FGD, because it is a very specific fusion related card that costs two costly monsters to be summoned. First you need to get your Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon on the field, whether by Fusing or Devil Franken (Cyber Stein) getting on the field will be tough. Next we have Chaos Soldier, who is a costly ritual monster and really cannot play well in a deck involving its fellow fusion material monster. This is already a huge hindrance that makes this card very unplayable. Luckily we have fusions substitutes like Marsh Battle King (King of the Swamp) that can make fusing this card easier, but even then it’s a stretch.

When you actually get Dragon Master Knight on the field it can gain a 500 point boost for each Dragon on the field, but after summoning this card you have most likely wasted every single card you hold. It’s almost as if this card was made just to combat FGD. Both are huge Fusion monsters with equal attacks at 5000, but Dragon Master Knight was given the boost and perfect attribute to take down its Dragon nemesis.

GB7-004
MAGIC EFFECT ARROW
Instant Magic
Destroy all face-up Magic cards on the Field controlled by your
opponent. Do 500 points of damage to your opponent for each
Magic card destroyed in this way.

The final card of the day steps into the very early manga chapters with Magic Effect Arrow a.k.a. The Living Arrow, a card that Yami Yugi played several times in the story arc to save himself. The problem with Living Arrow is that it was basically used as a kind of Deus Ex Machina and was given multiple effects to fit whatever situation it was needed. First we saw it fuse Mammoth Ghost (Mammoth Graveyard) with Kaiba’s Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon slowly destroying it from within, next its second effect was revealed, when it fused Pegasus’s Magic Neutralizing Force (an unreleased card at the time) with his own Toon World destroying it.

Konami leaned more towards the effect that destroyed Toon World and decided to give Reflect Arrow the ability to destroy your opponents face up magic cards. This will stop any Continuous Magic card in its tracks taking down your opponents Level Limit, Ectoplasmer, and even cards like there face up Sealing Swords of Light (Swords of Revealing Light) or Nightmarish Imprisonment (Nightmares Steel Cage). As an added bonus you will be giving your opponent an additional 500 damage for each magic card you destroy essential burning back at burn/stall decks. This card is also an instant magic (quick-play), making it versatile and a great sideboard choice as well.
