A Dragon's Den
October 4, 2007

A Dragon's Den

My last article got me slammed with people wanting to use Rainbow Dragon (RD).  I have also received numerous articles asking me what changes needed to be made to my last Crystal Beast (CB) deck.  I started to answer them each individually, but decided that it was in my interest to answer everyone with an article.

As some of you may remember, www.metagame.com had a deck fix involving RD upon its release.  The issue I had with the deck was that it sucked.  I've played aggressive CB and I simply just do not like them.  Unlike other beatdown variants they need to run theme specific support.  Thus bad draws and unusable cards distract the player from the mission of beating down.  The concept of running Magical Merchant and Card Trooper to support one RD distracts from accomplishing such a goal when your RD hits the graveyard.  Let us not forget that in order to summon this glinting beauty we need to have access to all 7 CB.  As much as the metagame writer emphasized how great his deck fix was, Amethyst Cat and Cobalt Eagle do relatively nothing in aiding the beatdown mentality.  Having recently acquired a RD through online trading, I decided to pick it up and give it a try.  Thus the following deck is one I've used in many duels.  I still have yet to play it in a tournament (the result of trying other things and time constraints) but I have tested it against multiple players from regionals to locals.  The end result is something that I believe is very consistent as well as explosive.

As I look at this deck I can't believe how many games I have won with RD.  Some games I have dropped him on turn 2.  Most of the time I draw him and actually hold out his summon for a flashy finish.  In retrospect he is not that hard to utilize efficiently.  Between Sapphire Pegasus and Crystal Beacon getting the summoning requirements, thinning the deck, and drawing into usable cards is relatively easy.  I believe one of the reasons I have yet to use this deck involves how hard of a time it has against zombies.  I've played against three zombie decks using this exact build.  I loss to one player pretty straight out.  I beat another by turn 3 and I loss to an aqantance using his second placing regional zombie build.  Against him in particular I could of won game 1 if I was playing smart.  But I played him multiple times and realized that a combination of Dust Tornado and triple Card of Safe Return hurt pretty bad.  Thus I strongly recommend Royal Oppression for the side deck.

One of the few things I'd love to change with this deck would be the addition of Green Baboon.  The only reason he is not in this deck is due to not having him (stupid SJmagazine is still shipping it too me as a result of their mistake.  Thus if anyone wants to trade me please email ASAP!).  Proper side decking should help the CB player to deal with most threats.  The major issue concerning this theme is that the first hand is so crucial.  Snipe Hunter, Card Destruction, and Morphing Jar should aid developing playable hands.  The only real complaint I have when using this deck is drawing Amethyst Cat in my opening hand.  I really hate that card.  It has horrible stats, a dumb picture, a horrendously poor effect, and makes me think of lonely people.  Other than that the card is tolerable:)

As far as playing the deck is concerned it runs just like a normal Rainbow Ruins variant with the exception of RD.  The ideal opening involves a Terraforming, sapphire Pegasus, crystal beacon, and anything other than amethyst cat or Ruby Carbuncle.  This is the case because it is pretty easy to summon Pegasus, search for a CB, use Terraforming to search for Rainbow Ruins, allow Pegasus to die, beacon carbuncle for two Pegasus and two back row.  Activate ruins and wait out an aggressive opponent.  This should not be hard to accomplish considering the fact your running 2x Terraforming and 3x Ruins along with three of each of the other cards.  In the case you fail to draw such an impressive hand Card Destruction and Morphing Jar open you up for an explosive finale.

As always, I can be contacted at Tebezu@gmail.com

If anyone wants to trade (still looking for many things, I'd love to get the cards needed for a venom deck, common charity among other normal monster support, etc.) do not hesitate in contacting me.  Right now my biggest wants are gellenduo and the new promos from yugioh gx 2.  If anyone has any of these cards hit me up ASAP.  The faster I get the gx2 promos the faster I can test new decks, new theories, etc.
