January 2015 Forbidden/Limited List Review
December 18, 2014

Time sure does fly with these three-month formats; it seems like just a few days ago that I reviewed the October Forbidden/Limited List. The past three months started off with Shaddoll and Burning Abyss fighting for the top spot, with Qliphort later joining the fray and Shaddoll falling down. So, does the January 2015 Forbidden/Limited List change this? Well…

NEWLY FORBIDDEN:

Super Polymerization: The one card to be Forbidden this time around is certainly an interesting hit, but it isn’t unwarranted. Super Poly was by far the most unfair card in Shaddoll due to its ability to not only take opposing monsters as Material, but also because responding to it was impossible. Limiting it in October stopped it from becoming a major problem, but it could steal games whenever it was played. Overall, this hit was not entirely necessary, but it was neither unwarranted nor was it unwelcome.

NEWLY LIMITED:

Artifact Moralltach: This change was actually adopted in the OCG back in July. The Artifact engine has had a large impact on the game since its release, first appearing in H.A.T., and then in Shaddoll and Satellarknight. The splashability of the engine and its ability to disrupt the opponent while also putting a threat on the board is a powerful one… but it was never seen as particularly gamebreaking. Additionally, the engine suffered from consistency issues, as drawing Moralltach was bad. Overall I don’t think this hit was very necessary.

Dark Strike Fighter: This change was expected. Dark Strike Fighter’s errata in Legendary Collection 5D’s, restricting its ability to only once per turn during Main Phase 1, made it so that the card wasn’t just no longer broken; it’s honestly pretty bad now. This change will have almost zero impact on the game, much like it has had no impact on the OCG (where the card is currently at 3).

Snatch Steal: This is the elephant in the room; whereas most people probably expected the return of Dark Strike Fighter, I feel like I can safely say that very few people, if any, expected Snatch Steal to come back. There are a lot of things I can say about this change, but overall I don’t think it was a good move. This card can heavily shift momentum in favor of the user, as can any other card that allows you to take control of a monster. Admittedly, Snatch Steal is weakened by the existence of three MST, as well as prolonged use of it giving your opponent free LP, meaning it can’t entirely mount a comeback on its own. However, the card provides nothing healthy to the game and didn’t need to return. It’s a little strange that they would wipe out Super Poly but replace it with a card like Snatch Steal.

NEWLY SEMI-LIMITED:

Honest: Another change that was adopted in the OCG quite a while ago, the last time Honest was a major threat was several years ago. However, the card is extremely unhealthy and can shift the game heavily in the favor of the user. This is a boost to LIGHT-heavy Decks such as Bujin, Satellarknight, and Constellar, but it’s not a healthy boost.

Goyo Guardian: This is going to have no impact. Goyo Guardian is well past its prime, and Decks that run Level 6 Synchros at all generally only run 1 copy anyway, and it’s not likely they’ll make room for a second.

Dark Hole: This is the second most surprising change, behind Snatch Steal. Dark Hole has been going in and out of use recently, but hasn’t actually been a staple in over a year. Currently the card is not relevant at all. Right now, this change will likely have little impact, but if the format changes to be less reliant on floaters and blowout OTKs, I can see this change becoming a problem as Dark Hole would see a rise in use, and the card is a lot more prominent in multiple copies.

NEWLY UNLIMITED:

Blackwing - Gale the Whirlwind: With this, Blackwing is at full power (minus one Allure of Darkness, though I don’t really count that). And they’re still not going to be relevant. Power creep at its finest.

Mermail Abyssgunde: This is similar to how Wolfbark went from 1 to 3 on the last list. Frankly, I believe this is the best boost that Mermail could have received besides Dragoons. This allows Mermail to create pressure more easily by getting more threats onto the board. Given how the game has evolved this probably won’t be enough to make them a major threat again, but perhaps we’ll see some showings at regionals.

Reborn Tengu: The game has sped up to the point that Tengu will not be a problem. With this change, the only card Plant Synchro is missing is Trishula. Maybe someday we’ll get her back too.

The Transmigration Prophecy: Finally.

WHAT’S MISSING:

I think a major problem with this list was its blatant disregard of most of the metagame. Why did Burning Abyss, by far the most dominant Deck of the format, get away without a single hit? Likewise, Qliphort got away too. Not even an obscure hit like Tour Guide or Skill Drain occurred for either. And what about Vanity’s Emptiness? That card was the MVP of the early format and still remained relevant post-NECH. The only major Deck to get hit was Shaddoll, with two indirect hits through Super Poly and Moralltach. But Shaddoll was straggling by the end of the format, so why did it alone get hit? I guess money goes a long way.

CONCLUSION:

Overall this was a disappointing banlist. The hits it made were significant but unnecessary, and at the same time no changes were made to Decks that actually needed to get hit. Unlike previous lists, a lot of the cards that moved up on the list were questionable changes. Overall this list made more steps in the wrong direction than the right. We’re looking at another format dominated by Burning Abyss, with Qliphort and Shaddoll following behind it. And in February we will likely see the rise of Nekroz as well.
