I SUMMON A MONSTER… NO YOU DON’T

I DRAW A CARD…. NO YOU DON’T

I PLAY A SPELL CARD… NO YOU DON’T

In a meta dominated by DaD and soon to be challenged by another quick deck type in the Lightsworn series of monsters duellists are struggling to find another deck type that can challenge the decks that can consistently win within the first 5 turns of a duel.  Control orientated duellists and deck builders have been striving for a way of hindering the speed of such decks so that their control strategies can take over and gain advantage over their opponent.  Nothing has appeared capable enough of puncturing the bubble that these super-aggro/OTK decks have created.  Until possibly now.  The ultimate control deck in the game of Yu-Gi-Oh! is none other than Counter Fairies.

Counter Fairies have always been an interesting concept to me.  I always liked the idea of countering every possible move my opponent could make, whilst gaining card advantage at the same time.  However when Counter Fairies first became possible I never considered building a deck because of what I saw as its major weakness at the time, being able to build enough ATK power on the field to win a duel.

It was a major weakness of the deck, I had visions of this huge card advantage I had over my opponent and not being able to ATK over the GK Spy they had in defence mode and never being able to win the game, yeah my opponent couldn’t win, but neither could I.

How things change.  I believe quite strongly that Counter Fairies are about to reach their pinnacle and become a top tier competitive deck.  The LODT Sneak Peak promo card ‘Guardian of Order’ will push this deck that extra step, as now Counter Fairies have access to a special summon monster that can take out Jinzo.  Coupled with Van’Dalgon the Dark Dragon Lord and possibly Sky Scourge Invincil, Counter Fairies now have access to cards with the raw ATK power to win duels.  Many will disagree, generally blinded by their lack of creativity beyond teching out their DaD decks.  Counter Fairies have all the elements capable of shutting down any deck including DaD, Lightsworns, Gladiator Beasts, Six Samurai, Zombies, everything.  How can I say that with such conviction?  Because Counter Fairies don’t counter specific decks, they counter basic gameplay actions, i.e. the summoning (normal or special) of a monster, the activation of a spell or trap card, the attack of a monster, the drawing of a card.  It therefore matters little what monster is summoned, what spell is played, or when a card is drawn, Counter Fairies will stop it from happening and then gain card advantage from doing so.

‘So why Mofox have all the top duellists in the world not jumped on the back of this “amazing” deck type?’

Quite simple it takes a lot of practise to master this deck.  It arguably requires the greatest of skills to perfect the Counter Fairy deck.  Why?  Because you do not have a limitless supply of counters to any specific gameplay action, in fact your supply is, indeed, limited.  This means the selection of when to play your counters requires the greatest amount of skill, a lot more so than deciding to play Trade-In, followed by Destiny Draw, followed by Allure of Darkness, followed by another Destiny Draw followed by a Monster Reborn of Disk Commander, followed by another Trade-in………………………

Anyone skilled or skill-less can play an endless list of drawing cards until they reach the requisite cards of what is essentially a remove from game OTK combo.  Counter Fairies requires dedication and a stupendous amount of play testing to perfect the correct timing to play your counter traps.  It will take a truly dedicated individual and a skilled player to capture a SJC title (or similar) with this deck, this being the main reason why this deck has not appeared at the top tables of tournaments around the world.  In today’s super competitive tournament environment, who is willing to put the effort into perfecting such a deck type when they can spend their time net-decking and perfecting methods to cheat their opponent instead.

I currently only understand the basics of this deck type, but want to learn more about it and create a deck myself.  This first article is basically an introduction to Counter Fairies and how I believe they have the potential to dominate this game.  This will be a series of articles dedicated solely to this deck type.  If your bored already then you won’t read any of the rest of this series of articles, my opinion is it’s your loss.  Those Counter Fairy fans out there that have been waiting for someone to push this deck type into the spotlight (beyond Jerome McHale’s spurious references in his restrictive agenda of articles on Metagame.com).  I hope I can do justice to the deck type in my subsequent analysis of its strengths, weaknesses, variances in builds and ultimately how it should be played.

Anyone wishing to email me on the subject I actively encourage it, I’m currently on an information gathering mission of epic proportions to try and understand Counter Fairies and request that anyone with an opinion, thought, analysis, experience of this deck type to email me at Mofox_@hotmail.co.uk.  Put “Counter Fairy” in the subject of your email otherwise I won’t read it.
