COMBOS!!
November 7, 2007

Today’s piece of crap I’m going to call an article is a simple piece about combos.

I love combos, so much so that if a combo was found in a female form, posters of her would be on my wall, I would have her calendar above my desk in work and magazines of her would be in my toilet!!

So for the uneducated who may be asking:

“Mofox, what is a combo?”

Well my young naïve reader, combo is short for combination, which means the uniting of individual pieces to create a new product.

“Alright smart-a**e, so you’ve read a dictionary but what does it mean in a way I can understand?”

Well my slightly irritating reader who asks too many questions, it generally means using 2 or more cards with each other to produce something better than using those cards individually.  How would an example suit you?

“Yes please Mr Featured Writer”

Example 1 – Mofox’s Favourite 2 card Combo of all time!!

Gyaku-Gire Panda (GGP) & Ojama Trio (OT)

GGP is a level 3 800ATK beast with an effect that increases its attack by 500 for every monster on your opponent’s field and has the trample ability.

OT is a trap card that puts 3 Ojama tokens on your opponent’s field in defence position (0ATK 1000DEF) that cannot be tributed and when removed from the field cause 300LP damage to your opponent per token.

Now these cards are, on their own, nice cards but play them together and you clog the opponent’s field with useless tokens, with a small defence value, and get to summon a level 3 beastie with 2300ATK with trample…. Nice! Add to that 1 of your opponent’s own monsters and you have a 2800ATK monster with trample.  See little reader combos are GOOD!

Want to read some more combos… ok

Example 2 – Damn that Sprite is Raging I wish she would go away!

Raging Flame Sprite & Mist Body

Raging Flame Sprite is a tiny little fire monster with 100ATK that can attack your opponent directly.  Whenever she successfully attacks directly her attack increases by 1000.

Mist Body is an equip spell card that prevents the attached monster from being destroyed in battle (damage calculation is still applied)

Again great cards on their own but put them together and you have a Raging Sprite of destruction that after 4 turns will have wiped your opponent out unless they get rid of her with spells or traps.

Example 3 – Dude that Cyber Dragon just grew an extra head!!

Cyber Dragon & Light Hex Sealed Fusion (& Cyber Twin Dragon I suppose so technically a 3 card combo)

We all know about Mr Cyber Dragon a level 5 light type dragon monster with 2100ATK that can be special summoned to the field if your opponent has 1 or more monsters and you have none.

Light Hex Sealed Fusion allows you to summon a light attribute fusion monster by using this as a substitute for one of the pieces and a substitute for polymerisation as long as the other fusion material monsters are the correct ones.  Good times!!

Again on their own very good cards (Cyber Dragon is meta defining and pretty much made Vampire Lord and Berserk Gorilla non-playable).  But put them together and you can special summon Cyber Dragon, normal summon Light Hex Sealed Fusion and then summon CYBER TWIN DRAGON a 2800ATK double attacking fusion monster.  Excellent (rubs hands together)!!

Example 4 – Discard, Attack and Burn

Thestalos the Firestorm Monarch & Spiritual Fire Art

Thestalos is a single tribute 2400ATK monster who when successfully tribute summoned discards a card from the opponents hand and reduces the opponent’s life points by 100 x the level of the card discarded

Spiritual Fire Art is a trap card that allows you to discard a fire type monster and reduce your opponent’s life points by the same amount as the ATK value of the monster discarded (its like Ring of Destruction but without hitting your own lifepoints!).

Good cards on their own but play them together and you can summon Thestalos, discard a card from your opponent’s hand, possibly burn him a little, then attack and then tribute for another 2400 burn damage (that’s 30% of your opponent’s life points) if you managed to get a direct hit then you’ve wiped 60% of your opponent’s life points with just 2 cards now that is super special awesome!

These are just 4 examples of 2 card combos that aren’t necessarily the best combos out there but they give you an idea of card interactions.  Combos can increase in the number of cards used too, you can also have 3 card combos.  Generally at this point the best combos that involve 3 cards normally get termed as OTKs (one turn kills).  However most of these combos cannot be reproduced in the advanced format (because certain cards involved in the combo are banned) or are incredibly difficult to do so (again because certain cards in the combo are restricted to 1 copy).  However other kinds of 3 card combos are available to us that are just as fun to play.  Want another example?

Example 5 – Thank god that Panda has finished attacking, that hurt… oh wait he’s back for more!!!!

Gyaku-Gire Panda, Ojama Trio & Beast Soul Swap (my favourite 3 card combo of all time)

As above except now you have Beast Soul Swap a trap card that lets you return to your hand, from the field, a beast type monster and allow you to summon another level 4 or lower beast type monster from your hand.  Want to see how this works.

Opponent has Spirit Reaper in face up defence position, you have Beast Soul Swap & Ojama Trio set.  Your turn you summon GGP and activate OT.  Your 2800ATK panda then attacks Reaper then after the attack has resolved, in your battle phase still, you activate Beast Soul Swap and put GGP back in your hand and then re-summon him.  Yes he can attack again! So go after that Reaper again and hit home for a total of 5200LP.  Nice!

During my time as “serious” writer I created some articles that invited audience participation.  They were generally well received and lots of people loved getting involved.  In fact I solely blame these articles for crashing my email account!!  By not learning from my mistakes I am therefore gonna invite some more audience participation with this article…. yay good times!!

So I want people to submit to me their favourite combos.  Try and keep them to 2 or 3 cards and I will post some of the most unique and interesting ones up on the main site in a couple of weeks.

Would just like to add that my son has been getting into watching the anime so I put some GX episodes on for him on the laptop from youtube.com.  Well after the little tyke went to bed I noticed a video called Yu-Gi-Oh! The Abridged Movie.  I watched it and wet myself 6 times!!! It was THE funniest thing I have ever seen.  The person who created it is an absolute genius.  Pegasus asking Kaiba for sweet monkey sex cracked me up for at least 10 minutes.  To all readers YOU HAVE TO WATCH THIS!
