Article 10: Turn by Turn Duel
May 3, 2006

Duel 8 took me away from my Ojama Trio/Gyaku-Gire Panda deck and I turned my attention towards another deck that worked well with Ojama Trio.  It utilised an old combo that allowed for some nice trample.

 Ilya says:

drw 6

Ilya says:

I set 1 mon and 1 s/t  and end my turn.

It will be interesting to see how common this first turn play will be when I get around to dueling Ilya in the new advanced format.  The addition of an extra Nobleman of Crossout might make people less weary to set a monster on the first turn.

Paul says:

ok I drw

Paul says:

I set 1 s/t and summon DD Survivor and atk your FD

Ilya says:

activate FD trap

Ilya says:

Negate Attack

Paul says:

I end my turn

Talk about an old school trap.

Ilya says:

drw

Paul says:

I activate Ojama trio, chain?

Here are some interesting thoughts about Ojama Trio and its uses.  During this duel its aim is not to boost Gyaku-Gire Panda but to clog the field and give a viable attack target for Airknight Parshath.  Hence why I was activating it so early in the turn.  However a tip that someone gave to me when using it with Gyaku-Gire Panda is to put the Panda on the field without the tokens and then bait the opponent into attacking your weak monster then during the battle phase activate Ojama Trio and boost the attack of Gyaku-Gire and give your opponent some Life Point damage and destroy their monster.  Also Ojama Trio is a great way to waste an opponent’s resource.  Chaining it to the activation of a card designed to destroy it such as Mystical Space Typhoon, is also a very useful way of using the card.

Ilya says:

no

Ilya says:

activate Reinforcements of the army

Ilya says:

to search from deck and add to my hand my D.D. Survivor

Ilya says:

normal summon D.D. Survivor

Ilya says:

Response?

Paul says:

nope

Ilya says:

have the 2 D.D. Survivors cancel each other out.

Ilya says:

then I flip summon Getsu Fuhma

Ilya says:

set 1 s/t and end my turn

Paul says:

ok I drw

Paul says:

I summon breaker and use is effect on your s/t, chain?

Ilya says:

destroying my reinforcement of the army

Breaker blows through Ilya’s bluff set.

Paul says:

I then set 1 s/t and end turn

Breaker was now at a lower atk than Getsu Fuhma so it was necessary to lay down some protection for him.

Ilya says:

drw

Ilya says:

activate heavy storm

Paul says:

destroying my sak armour

Ilya says:

anything on your field besides breaker?

Paul says:

nope

Ilya says:

normal summon Kycoo the Ghost Destroyer

Ilya says:

have Getsu kill breaker (-100 LP for you)

Ilya says:

then have Kycoo attack you directly (-1800 LP for you)

Ilya says:

and remove from your graveyard from play the Breaker and DD Survivor

Ilya says:

8000-6100

Ilya says:

end turn

Nice move from Ilya, Heavy Storm was a 1for 1 but it paved the way for a successful attack.  I lost almost 25% of my Life Points and lost 2 monsters out of my graveyard.  I had a question about DD Survivor.

Paul says:

DDS come back to my field in your end phase, correct?

Ilya says:

no

Ilya says:

he must leave the field to comeback to field

Ilya says:

he left graveyard

Paul says:

ah I see

Paul says:

thanx for clearing that one up for me

Here is where DD Survivor and DD Scout Plane are different.  If DD Survivor is sent from the field to the remove from game (RFG) pile, then it comes back to the field.  If DD Scout Plane exists in the remove from game pile then it is summoned back to the field.  So you can see that it doesn’t matter how DD Scout Plane gets to the RFG pile once it is there its effect activates.  DD Survivor must be sent there from the field to activate its effect.

Paul says:

I drw

Paul says:

I set 1 mon fd and activate snatch steal taking your Kycoo and atk your Getsu

Ilya says:

7900-6100

Ilya says:

(my dd survivor is out of play)

Ilya says:

Getsu Fuhma can't go because she gets there after Kycoo’s effect resolves

Ilya says:

so she is in the gy

Ilya says:

I have 3 tokens in DEF left

Paul says:

I end my turn

Snatch Steal is another powerful card, Ilya had managed to clear my field on the previous turn and with this one card I had wiped out his field advantage.  I had his Kycoo and had destroyed his other monster, plus removed his DD Survivor from play.  All because of one card.

Ilya says:

drw

Ilya says:

set 1 monster and end turn

Ilya says:

I gain 1000 LP for snatch steal

Ilya says:

    8900-6100

Paul says:

ok I drw

Paul says:

Kycoo atks your fd

Ilya says:

destroys my Newdoria (Newdoria effect kills him)

Ilya says:

both to my GY

Paul says:

ok I set 1 s/t and end

Ilya says:

drw

Ilya says:

normal summon Kycoo the Ghost Destroyer (my 2nd copy)

Ilya says:

response?

Paul says:

no

Ilya says:

have Kycoo attack your fd

Paul says:

sangan

Ilya says:

what do you get with Sangan’s effect?

Paul says:

DDWL

Ilya says:

end turn

A useful thing to remember about Sangan is that your opponent sees the card you pull with its effect.  Now you can use this to your advantage like I did.  By selecting DD Warrior Lady as my search I was essentially saying to Ilya if I set a monster next turn then it will be this one and if you try and attack it with a larger monster I will just remove both from play.

Paul says:

I drw

Paul says:

I set 1 mon and end turn

There is the set.

Ilya says:

drw

Ilya says:

end turn

and Ilya had obviously anticipated that it might be DD Warrior Lady.  Now the advantage for me now was that I had stalled for another turn.  This gave me another draw to pull a card and give me more options.  It also helped get me some field presence.  The other thing is that it left me some tribute fodder…

Paul says:

I drw

Paul says:

your field?

Ilya says:

Kycoo (ATK 1800) + 3 Ojama Tokens (DEF 1000 each)

Paul says:

any s/t?

Ilya says:

nope

Paul says:

ok lets have some fun

Paul says:

I equip your Kycoo with big bang shot

Paul says:

and then play giant trunade

Ilya says:

so Kycoo is out of play

Paul says:

and my set s/t goes back to my hand as well

Paul says:

I trib my fd to summon Airknight

Ilya says:

what was the set mon?

Paul says:

DDWL

Ilya says:

I thought that

Now I could’ve potentially set another card other than DDWL and tried to bluff Ilya.  It would’ve been a clever move as when I revealed that the set wasn’t DDWL Ilya would know it was still in my hand and that any set in the future could potentially be this card, or that I would have the option of suiciding it into one of his monsters on a future turn.  Unfortunately when I searched it, it was the only monster card in my hand that I could summon without tribute.

Paul says:

I atk an Ojama token

Paul says:

7700-6100

Paul says:

plus I drw a card

One thing I’ve learnt during duels is that you can never underestimate the power of drawing in a game.  In my eyes at the moment it is the single most crucial element to this game.  Without drawing you can’t get a bigger hand.  With a big hand you have more options in which to attack or defend.  Eliminating someone’s power to draw is game breaking hence part of the reason for banning cards like Yata Garusu, Time Seal and the restriction of Drop Off.  Also due to lack of draw power in today’s game (no pot of greed) people become very focused on conserving the hand they already have as they know it is difficult to replenish it once used.  That’s why many players today spend a lot of time talking about card advantage and designing their decks on maintaining their hand.  In my opinion the powers that be should have left Graceful Charity and brought back Pot of Greed instead.  It isn’t a broken card for this one simple reason.  The draws you get from Pot of Greed will depend entirely on the build of your deck.  A poorly built deck will get bad draws from Pot of Greed and well-built decks will get good draws.  Pot of Greed rewards players who build good, well thought out decks.  Anyway enough of that back to the duel.

Ilya says:

7700-6100 agreed

Paul says:

I set 1 s/t and end turn

Ilya says:

drw

Ilya says:

set 1 s/t and summon Mystic Tomato in ATK mode

Ilya says:

end turn

Paul says:

ok I drw

Paul says:

I activate reinforcements of the army and bring DD survivor to my hand

Reinforcements of the Army is another great card.  It allows you pull an option from your deck depending on the situation.  If you have the right cards in your deck of course.  Got a FD monster bothering you then search for MSLV2, got an open field and want to hit your opponents hand, then search for Don Zaloog.  In a warrior central deck then in my opinion you should put as many of this card in as possible.

Paul says:

I activate my fd s/t MST, chain?

Ilya says:

no

Ilya says:

you destroyed my torrential tribute

Paul says:

I summon DD survivor and equip with Big Bang Shot

Paul says:

and I atk the two remaining Ojama tokens with DDS and Airknight

Ilya says:

2700 total damage

See how the damage increases due to Ojama Trio’s burn effect.  900 trample from Airknight + 1200 trample from DDS equipped with BBS + 600 burn damage from Ojama Tokens = 2700 which is over 1/3 of Ilya’s Life Points.

Paul says:

5000-6100

Paul says:

and I drw from Airknight

Paul says:

I set 1 s/t and end turn

Ilya says:

drw

Paul says:

I activate Ojama trio

More targets for me to hit, without a decent backfield defense Ilya would be looking at 2700 damage next turn and probably the turn after he would lose when my 2 monsters attacked again.  He needed to do something to try and turn the duel around.  Seeing beyond the current turn is a skill that most experienced players have.  In fact I’d argue that the more experienced the player the further into the future of the duel they can see plus they can foresee the different potential paths for the duel.  This kind of skill can only be gained through experience and more than likely is gained after losing a duel to a move that you didn’t see coming.  It’s a worthwhile skill to focus on.

Ilya says:

activate premature burial

Ilya says:

pay 800 lp

Ilya says:

4200-6100

Ilya says:

to special summon Newdoria

Ilya says:

Newdoria rams itself into Airknight and destroys him with its effect (- 700 LP to me) [you draw a card]

Ilya says:

3500-6100

Ilya says:

Mystic Tomato attacks your DD Survivor (- 800 points)

Ilya says:

2700-6100

Ilya says:

special summoning

Ilya says:

Newdoria

Ilya says:

Newdoria rams itself into DD Survivor (- 1000)

Ilya says:

1700-6100

Ilya says:

destroying DD Survivor

Ilya says:

main phase 2

Ilya says:

normal summon Cannon Soldier

Ilya says:

Offer as tribute 3x Ojama tokens and my cannon soldier to inflict 2000 LP damage to you and 900 to me

Ilya says:

800-4100

Ilya says:

end turn

I think Ilya must have known he was about to lose but still decided to go out with a bang.  I admire him for that, not giving up and giving it his all till the bitter end.  Although the move hit his life points hard you can see some intuitive moves in there.  Suiciding Mystic Tomato is sometimes a useful move.  Although it loses you points you could potentially search for a card that can help you out in the duel.  It also shows how Cannon Soldier is a useful counter to Ojama Trio.  Now you may not come up against many burn decks but if you do consider Cannon Soldier for your side deck.  Apart from it usefulness in countering Ojama Trio it also can be used in combination with cards like Snatch Steal, Brain Control, Enemy Controller and Scapegoat.  Now consider that all these cards are spell cards and Magician of Faith is now semi-restricted… hmm I see potential for a useful deck!!

Paul says:

so you have a clear field now

Ilya says:

yes

Paul says:

I drw

Paul says:

I summon mystic tom in atk mode

Ilya says:

for game?

Paul says:

yeah

So there we have it a break down of another of my duels against Ilya.  Now before I get a load of emails claiming how I made this stupid mistake and that stupid mistake.  Please take into context where I am coming from.  This was my 8th ever duel, and at the present I only have 30+ duels worth of experience to be able to analyse this duel.  I will no doubt have made some mistakes which is fine, and I do want to know what they are so that I can improve my only request is no bashing and no flaming.  I want your help but I won’t tolerate abuse.

So hopefully now, you newbies can see more of my thought processes and hopefully they will help you in your own duelling decisions.  I won the duel again this time, using a different deck to my beast deck.  I hope the deck highlights the benefits of trample cards.  When I had this duel it was still in the last format and players tended to set cards a lot.  Trample is great in this scenario and even if it doesn’t give too much damage it certainly puts the pressure on your opponent to stop setting monster cards.  Now in a matchup against flip-flop control decks you can sometimes have some difficulties from the effects you will keep activating, so a useful card is Light of Intervention.  It prevents players from setting monsters face down and they must be set in face up position.  This stops your opponent from getting all those flip effects.

You noticed that I had a little speech on draw power.  My one disappointment with the new list was they didn’t release Pot of Greed from the Banned List.  In my opinion it only rewards players with well-built decks.  Draws are still random elements to the game.  The only thing you can do to improve your draw is to increase the probability of getting the cards you want or need this can only be done through well thought deck building.

My final bit of advice from this duel is that recording your online duels is very useful for us new players.  Looking back upon your duel and seeing where you made mistakes and also made good moves will help you build that duelling foresight.  Especially important is to note the times when your opponent managed to counter your moves.  This will help you prepare in the future.  Remember what your opponent did and if you find yourself in the same situation again then you can consider what your opponent could potentially do to counter your move and you can then decide accordingly and even prepare your own counter to your opponents counter.  This duelling foresight though only comes from experience.  So the more you duel the more you will have.

My email address is mofox9@hotmail.co.uk email me for any help or advice or even your opinions on my articles.  I would love to hear your opinions and if you have any suggestions to improve them then let me know.  I will reply to all emails that are sent to me.  Remember newbies no question is a stupid question.

Until next time fellow duellists!
