Leon’s South Wall Corner Club
Constructing the Spell Canceller Deck

September 8, 2005

Hello everyone and welcome back. You know what? I’d be hard pressed to find any unifying theme between any of my past articles but they’ve been fun none-the-less. Today I wanted to (yet again) do something a little different. I was reading some of JaeLove’s older articles and liked the way he dissected and constructed several different decks. I thought I would try my hand at the same thing through a deck type I got to see first hand at an Oakland tournament. So, without further ado, we will construct the Spell Canceller deck.

Goals

The first goal of this deck is the general goal of victory through battle.
We will do this in a unique way, however, by coupling trap control with a lock down of much of the opponent’s deck. Think of it this way: Following normal ratios roughly 16 to 18 cards out of a 40 card deck are spells.
That’s roughly a little under half the deck locked down. We will keep this lock down secure by providing massive back field defense until the opponent’s resources simply dry up.

How to do this.

I did some research and found some really ingenious ways to do this - including a special tech. First thing we need to do is be sure we don’t lock ourselves down as well. Ratios will be drastically altered. We’ll keep the spell count down to the bare essentials and leave all removal and field control in the hands of trap cards and select monsters. With tremendous back field protection Spell Canceller’s weakness of such a sub par attack should be neutralized and he should be free to either attack for game or leave him in defense while other monsters do the job.

What cards to use.

Spell Canceller will be the focal point of the deck and will be the only three tribute monsters in the deck. His incredible ability as a walking Imperial Order can be detrimental to your opponents strategy.

Jetroid - This is the awesome tech I’m throwing in to the deck. His effect states that when attacked you may activate trap cards from your hand (like Makyurka). You will love this guy when you see him in action. Keep a Sakuretsu in hand and he can’t be touched - even if he’s the only thing on the field. Its like having an entire backfield of protection without leaving any of it vulnerable to destruction. His tremendous survival ability makes a great first turn drop and the perfect tribute for Canceller. We‘ll try a couple.

Wave Motion Cannon - This is one of the non-essential spells that we will be running in the deck. With Spell Canceller on the field you cannot fire it off, but it will still gain counters every standby phase. There’s nothing like a good old S/T destruction lightning rod.

We’ll go quite defensive and heavy with the traps. Sakuretsu in threes.
Bottomless Trap Hole in threes. Dust Tornado in threes. Solemn Judgment in threes. Spells will be the bare minimum.

Strengths

Spell lockdown coupled with trap heavy defense allows you to have an entire backfield of protection without running the obvious risks of doing so (Heavy Storm and whatnot). Your opponents ratios will start to work against him.
He’ll have limited himself to just the “Big 4” in traps and maybe one or two extra things. His spells will be shut down and he’ll be relying only on his monsters to get the job done. That’s where the three Solemn Judgments and crap-loads of protection come in.

Weaknesses

Spell Canceller’s pitiful attack may be your downfall. If you’re fresh out of protection a Berserk can ruin your day - since your opponent can now use that trinity they’ve been holding on to. Obvious risks in trap heavy decks also include Jinzo and Royal Decree. Three Solemn plus three Dust Tornado should take care of Decree but Jinzo could be more problematic if you don’t have a Judgment ready to go. Maybe some addition monster tech removal is the way to go.

Lets go with a first draft of the deck. Presenting Leon’s original (and slightly psychotic) Spell Canceller Trap Control.

3x Spell Canceller
2x Jetroid
2x Spirit Reaper
Tribe-Infecting Virus
Sinister Serpent
Sangan
Breaker the Magical Warrior
D.D. Warrior Lady
Exile Force

Pot of Greed
Graceful Charity
Delinquent Duo
Snatch Steal
Heavy Storm

3x Wave Motion Cannon

Ring of Destruction
Call of the Haunted
Torrential Tribute
Mirror Force
3x Sakuretsu
3x Dust Tornado
3x Solemn Judgment
3x Bottomless Trap Hole

There you have it. Something to construct over the weekend and impress your friends with. Courtesy of “muah”. What can I say? I live to serve. Until next time [insert as many cliché closing catch phrases as you can] or just go with “Peace”.
