Match #3: Rhymus Lizo Tangles with Mister Adame!

Rhymus Lizo needs no introduction. A top eighter at Nationals, with a Shonen Jump Championship top eight as well, he is unquestionably one of the best players in the nation and a member of Team Overdose. He was playing the deck posted on Metagame, basically, with Dekoichis leading into Pot of Avarice advantage.

Hugo Adame, on the other hand, has already been introduced. Almost everyone involved was getting sick of seeing his beautiful face, so he seemed ripe for a defeat. I’m running out of things to say about him, but say hello to him the next time you see him at an event!

Hugo won the dice roll and elected to go first.

Hugo Turn One: Hugo opens with a set monster.

Rhymus Turn Two: Rhymus summons a Cyber Dragon, which hits the f/d Spirit Reaper. He sets a monster and a s/t.

H3: Hugo sets another monster.

R4: Rhymus flips Dekoichi. He plays Smashing Ground on the Reaper, Cyber Dragon destroys the set GK Spy, which brings out another. Rhymus then summons a Tsukuyomi. This type of advantage is incredibly difficult to deal with, especially after Rhymus sets a second s/t.

H5: Hugo plays Snatch Steal on Cyber Dragon. Rhymus books it. Hugo summons Breaker, which tries to attack the Cyber Dragon. It runs into a Sakuretsu Armor, and the game is basically over.

R6: Rhymus flips Dekoichi and Cyber Dragon. Cyber hits the Spy, then the Train hits for 1400. He sets a s/t and passes.                        8000 6600

H7: Hugo plays Smashing Ground, destroying Cyber Dragon, then sets a monster.

R8: Rhymus flips Dekoichi, summons Sangan. Dekoichi hits the f/d Sangan, then Sangan hits for 1000. Hugo grabs Twin Headed Behemoth. Rhymus plays Confiscation, hitting Avarice out of Premature, Mobius, and the Behemoth. He then sets a second s/t.

                                                                        5600 7000

H9: Hugo summons Twin, which hits into a Bottomless.

R10: Rhymus summons Tsuku, flips Dekoichi down then up. He then attacks with all three monsters for 3500 damage and passes. 2100 7000

H11: Hugo sets one of each.

R12: Rhymus summons Breaker, which hits the face-down Heavy Storm. He then flips Swords and switches Dekoichi/Sangan to defense upon seeing the face-down Spirit Reaper.

H13: Hugo Prematures Sangan, sacrificing for Mobius to take down SORl and the f/d Sakuretsu Armor. He finally breaks through the Dekoichi lock. Sangan digs Spirit Reaper. Mobius hits the Breaker for 800. Hugo then sets a s/t and passes.

                                                                        1300 6200

R14: Rhymus summons Tsuku to turn Mobius down. Dekoichi hits Mobius. He then sets a s/t.

H15: Hugo uses Dust Tornado at the end phase, hitting Trap Hole. He sets a monster.

R16: Rhymus uses Tsuku on Dekoichi again, then plays Crossout on the face-down Reaper. He sets a s/t and passes, unable to get through the Reaper.

H17: Hugo sets a s/t, Rhymus sets a monster, and Hugo sets a monster. This game will basically end when Rhymus can draw a Smashing Ground.

R20: Rhymus flips Magician, using Crossout on Hugo’s Dekoichi. He then Tsukus his own Dekoichi and passes.

H21: Hugo sets a monster.

R22: Rhymus finally draws his Smashing Ground. He uses Tsuku to turn MoF down and up for Crossout. Then he Smashes Reaper, and attacks for game.

The game was absolutely brutal. With an early Tsukuyomi lock with Dekoichi, Hugo loses huge advantage and suffers a defeat. He opts to open game two.

Hugo Turn One: Hugo sets a s/t and passes. Rhymus does the same. The two duelists pass the next two turns, adapting to each other’s styles and conserving resources.

H5: Hugo spaces Rhymus’s Bottomless. He summons Reaper, which hits for 300 and a Mobius. He sets a second s/t.                                      8000 7700

R6: Rhymus smashes Reaper, Hugo chains Book. Rhymus sets one of each. When Hugo uses Dust Tornado at the end phase on Widespread, signaling another Reaper hit, this game is basically over as well.

H7: Hugo uses Reinforcement for D.D Assailant. He summons it, hitting Magician which retrieves Smashing Ground. Reaper digs for another 300, discarding Smashing Ground. Hugo sets a second s/t and passes.                          8000 7400.

R8: Rhymus plays Dark Hole, destroying both monsters. He sets a monster.

H9: Hugo summons Blade Knight, which hits a Spirit Reaper. He is up five cards to three. He uses Enemy Controller to destroy Reaper, and passes with one s/t down.

R10: Rhymus plays Swords and passes with 2 cards in hand. Hugo passes, Rhymus passes, Hugo passes, and Rhymus sets a s/t and passes. Letting SORL run out is usually a good idea.

H15: Hugo plays Heavy Storm, hitting his own Widespread and clearing Rhymus’s Saku and Swords. He hits for 2300 with a Spirit Reaper and Blade Knight. Reaper hits a Widespread from hand.                        8000 5100

R16: Rhymus sets two more s/ts.

H17: Hugo attacks with Reaper and Blade Knight for 1900 total. The Reaper discards a Mobius, and Rhymus is down to just two s/ts set.                        8000 3200

R18: Rhymus draws a third s/t, and sets it. Hugo simply hits for another 1900 with Reaper and Blade Knight.                                        8000 1300

R20: Rhymus plays Smashing Ground on Blade Knight from the field, signaling no other play. He then sets a monster.

H21: Hugo summons Gravekeeper’s Spy. Rhymus responds with Torrential Tribute, which hits his own Dekoichi, Gravekeeper’s Spy, and Spirit Reaper. When Hugo uses Call of the Haunted to bring out Spy, Rhymus chains with Mystical Space Typhoon.

R22: Rhymus draws and passes.

H23: Hugo summons Twin Headed for game!

Hugo Adame seizes game two, evening the score 1-1.

His usual joking manner gone, Rhymus studies hard and concentrates on his sidedeck choices. Realizing that the East would be put in an insurmountable hole if he loses, he must come through in the clutch against Hugo for the team to have a chance.

Rhymus opens the pivotal game three: He sets a monster.

H2: Acting on the earlier Dekoichi reads, he summons Blade Knight and attacks into a face-down Mystic Tomato! The Tomato digs a Sangan. Hugo sets a s/t and passes.

R3: Rhymus moves Sangan to defense and sets another monster. He seems to be begging for the face-down to be attacked.

H4: Hugo attacks the face-down Tomato, which brings out a Spirit Reaper. Hugo then sets another s/t.

R5: Rhymus sacrifices the Sangan for Mobius the Frost Monarch, getting a two for one minimum when it hits Nobleman of Extermination and Scapegoat. The Sangan digs a Tsukuyomi. Mobius kills the Blade Knight. He then sets a s/t. Hugo is in a huge hole because of his earlier Extermination bluff, and the Tomatos have done a great job of misdirection.                              8000 7200, Rhymus.

H6: Hugo sets one of each and passes.

R7: Rhymus continues the assault, summoning a Breaker which hits the f/d Sakuretsu. Mobius hits the f/d Reaper, and Breaker and Reaper hit two Scapegoat tokens. Rhymus Smashes the Reaper and passes.

H8: Hugo sets a monster and passes.

R9: Rhymus attacks the f/d Spy with Mobius. Breaker hits a goat, and Reaper moves to defense. Rhymus then sets a monster.

H10: Hugo crosses out the f/d MoF, but he has very few cards versus Rhymus’s overwhelming board. He is forced to set another monster.

R11: Mobius and Breaker clear the face-down Magician and Spy. Then, Reaper hits, discarding a Spirit Reaper. Magician digs Scapegoats.           8000 6900

H12: Hugo plays the Scapegoat from hand, sets a monster, and passes.

R13: Rhymus attacks the face-down Behemoth. Then, his other monsters clear three other goats. He sets a monster.

H14: About out of options, Hugo plays Brain Control on Mobius. Twin Headed attacks the Reaper for 700, Mobius hits the Breaker, then Mobius is sacrificed to hit Rhymus’s f/d Pot of Avarice and MST. Even this huge swing can’t save the game for Hugo.

6500 6100

R15: Rhymus flips Dekoichi. Tsukuyomi turns down Mobius, then Dekoichi hits Twin, Reaper hits the last goat, and Tsukuyomi hits the Mobius. He then sets 2 s/ts.

H16: Hugo summons Blade Knight; it is trap holed.

R17: Rhymus flips Dekoichi down and up with Tsuku, then attacks for 2800 damage.

3700 6100

H18: Hugo sets a s/t and passes with zero cards in hand.

R19: Rhymus plays a Heavy Storm on his own BTH and Sakuretsu, hitting Hugo’s EC. The Controller destroys Reaper, but even this four for one trade is irrelevant, with all of the cards in Rhymus’s hand. He attacks for 2500 with a Tsukuyomi Dekoichi flip-flop. He then sets a s/t.                             1200 6100

H20: Hugo concedes upon seeing his draw.

Rhymus Lizo squeezes out a muscular victory over the Team Savage champion!
