Attitude
March 29, 2006

Attitude is a concept that is a dominant factor throughout life, and in all aspects of it. Time and time again attitude has been the deciding factors of games, confrontations and even war. It has molded the way we live, and the shape of the Earth itself.

Different attitudes produce different results, for instance having a positive outlook generally produces more calm, pleasant people, and having a negative attitude produces miserable, suspicious and downright cynical individuals. Our thoughts and feelings, and the things we do, are all determined by our attitudes to particular things

Differences of attitude, or opinion often results in confrontation , which is a negative factor to bring into anything, but in games for instance, it can be beneficial.

In Yugioh, if everyone shared the same attitude then , lets face it, the game would be pretty boring. Carbon Copy decks would be used repetitively and there would be no diversity whatsoever. Fortunately, people do not share the same attitudes on this game, and as a result there are a wide variety of original and powerful decks.

Different interpretations have lead to many different types of decks, for example Control, and aggro, two completely opposite themes. And what about burn / stall? The decks in Yugioh, thanks to the diversity of the players, have developed into many different incarnations be it defensive or aggressive and with the right attitude behind a player and their deck , anything is possible.

A yugioh deck should represent the attitudes of the player using it. If you feel more comfortable stalling and waiting it out, then an aggro deck is not for you, and the same likewise. Before you construct your deck, think about how you want it to play and ensure that you CAN play it that way and that you are not influenced wrongly by others and THEIR attitudes.

The thing about attitudes is that we are not born with them. Attitudes develop over time from what we see and learn from. Our piers have the most influence on our outlook , and in that sense we all imprint a bit of our outlook onto them. I you sit down and think about it, no one truly has an unbiased attitude to anything, especially this game.

People learn from observation and reproduction. It’s almost the only way, and even though they most probably don’t realize it subconsciously they are constantly picking up on things and applying it to their personality. This happens every day, and yet you only notice it every so often, for instance have you ever learned a song without actually listening to it? I don’t mean having never actually heard it, that would be impossible, but think about it. Someone, at some time, has had the song on in the background, and you may not have even noticed it, or even known what the song was about, or who it was by, but have you ever suddenly started singing it ? I think everyone has. Consciously, you are not paying attention, but subconsciously you’re hearing every word. The brain’s complex that way.

Anyway, another point I’d like to address before I go into greater detail is that we learn more from people that we respect. We take what they say on board and try to follow them from what they do. We use their attitude as our own and adapt ourselves to fit that persona. As an example related to yugioh, I will use the Cotd reviewers.

When people read a Cotd , especially when they are just starting out, they learn a great deal from it. More often than not they learn more about just the one card , and develop their attitudes depending on the reviewers. Our opinions on many cards are often influenced by what others think, and even what the Cotd ers has all found is bearing in something another player has said in the past. What players look for in a card was decided in the instance the game was first played competitively. From that moment on people have formed their own opinion solely on whether or not fit’s the criteria subconsciously decided after a player had heard another’s opinion on what is needed in order to be a success. Players follow other players, and their biases become their own. What we see in a Cotd nowadays is not a players personal reflection on that card, but an echo on the Cotd reviews and opinions on what another has said on a similar card in the forgotten subconscious past.

Currently, the greatest example of this is each players definition of the term ‘Staple’ . As it stands players have deluded themselves that certain cards are ABSOLUTELY necessary in order for a deck to even win a game. Now obviously, these cards are powerful, and having them in will almost certainly improve their decks, but unfortunately,. People, myself included, cannot bear to release a card from our decks for the subconscious fear that it will ‘Break’ the deck , even if they are releasing themselves from cards that could be better replaced by a more suited card. This illusion is actually fantastic psychologically, lets think about it.

In the Yugioh Anime, Yugi , the lead character, ‘s moves are always influenced by an unseen spirit that supposedly is the king of games. I’m sure many of us would like such a helpful guy to lend a hand in a tough spot, at least I know I would. But such things are for children’s TV and crazy hocus pocus nutters right? Wrong.

As it stands, every move we make is influenced by someone else’s attitude. Every card we play is because at some point someone has told us this combo, or because in the past we have pulled similar combo’s out of our hats, which in turn have been recorded and observed by others. We constantly have a little voice in the back of our minds telling us what to do through either personal experience or what others have said or thought. When we are dueling we are all one mind in reality, dealing with the cards we are dealt. It’s actually quite frightening.

The only true way to escape others biases imprinted on our mind is to lock ourselves away from everything, especially our cards, and then think about Yugioh and what the key aspects of the game are. Then you think of cards that coincide with those aspects. Then you consider themes that have a lot of these aspects, and if you personally think it may work, by all means go onto it from there.

Last format everyone said that an original themed deck would fail, but whose exactly proved it? The negative karma that statement put on the original decks was unreal, and everyone started believing it, and the same can be said in all courses of life. If enough people say something often enough everyone believes it. I’m here to burst this bubble and say right now that last format original decks had potential, and this format is even better for then. Treeborn fog, Mirror Force and graceful coming back was a blessing in disguise. Every deck can get a boost from these which can put any deck right up there with the best. Ignore the opinions force fed subconsciously into you and develop your own attitude on what will and will not work. You’d be surprised….

As always, Toddyhole@aol.com for your thoughts and feelings, and I will reply .

Have a good one guys !!!
