DM7FGD's Look Into the Future

Article #20 - Malik’s Monstrosities

Alright, it’s time for my 20th article here on the site. Since its my 20th, I decided to do today’s article based on some of the cards used in the show / Manga by my personal favorite character; Malik Ishtahl. (Marik Ishtar in English)

First off, notice my change of e-mail address at the bottom of this article. This is the new e-mail address that, if you want to get in contact with me, you should be sending your e-mails to, and not to my e-mail address that used to be posted in my other articles. Thank you.

Now, onto today’s article. All cards reviewed in today’s article are used by Malik. We begin with a look at Monster Relief.

Monster Relief
Normal Trap
Effect: Activate this card when an opponent’s Monster attacks. Return one of your Monsters on the Field to your hand, then Special Summon one Level 4 Monster from your hand.

*This card was released in the Japanese Limited Edition 4 Malik Promo Pack. No telling when its English release will be.*

Monster Relief could be a pretty handy Trap card for quite a few different types of Decks. If you have a rather weak Monster out on the Field that’s getting ready to be severely attacked by one of your opponent’s stronger Monsters, you could activate your Monster Relief and Summon a different, perhaps stronger Level 4 Monster (Must be Level 4) from your hand for your opponent to have to rush into by its attack.

It could be useful to use with such Monsters as Black Forest Witch or the Mystic Tomato, or any powerful Level 4 Monster, such as Gemini Elf, Berserk Gorilla, or Genocide King Demon, for example.

One card that Monster Relief could work pretty well with is Reflect Bounder. If you’re unfamiliar with Reflect Bounder, just go check out my Mechanized Monsters of Mayhem article. If you bring out Reflect Bounder, your opponent will surely think twice about attacking.

Yes, Monster Relief would trigger a replay. Why? Well, the original target for the attack by your opponent’s Monster would no longer be on the Field, therefore when you bring out a different Monster, your opponent would get to replay, and choose whether or not to attack the Monster you brought out.

Overall, Monster Relief is a pretty average card. It’s not too good, but it’s not bad. I’d give it an overall rating of 6.5/10.

Moving on to card #2 of today’s article, we have Gil Gars.

Gil Gars
Dark/Demon - Level 4 - 1800/1200
Normal Monster

*Also released in the Japanese Limited Edition 4 Malik Promo Pack.*

Well, as is obvious by looking at it, Gil Gars doesn’t have much going for it besides being a Dark/Demon-type Monster used by Malik. 1800 ATK isn’t all that bad, and it of course has the ability to be Searched by the Witch. It also has the ability to be used with Monster Relief, and Ambush, as you’ll see reviewed later in this article.

There’s not too much else to say about Gil Gars, so I’ll just state the obvious. It of course can be made into a pretty powerful Monster by equipments such as Big Bang Shot. Gil Gars doesn’t fit too well, compared to other cards in many Deck-Types at all, except for Malik Character Decks.

Sorry there’s not much to say about Gil Gars. It’s just another basic attacker of 1800 ATK strength. I’d rate Gil Gars an overall 5.8/10.

For the third card of today’s article, we’ll take a look at the third card from the Limited Edition 4 Malik Pack; Ambush

Ambush
Normal Trap
Effect: Activate this card when your opponent Summons or Reverse Summons a Monster. Special Summon one Level 4 or less Dark-Type Monster from your hand.

Now, Ambush is perhaps the most useful of the Limited Edition 4 Malik Cards. Dark-Type Monsters are some of the most versatile Level 4’s in the game, and Ambush works great with most of them.

Ambush can be great with Genocide King Demon, the Searchers, Dark Jeroid, Drillago, etc. Any Dark-Type Monster of Level 4 or under can work well with Ambush, really, making Ambush great for Dark-Type Decks, and of course Malik-themed Decks.

At any time you may be in trouble due to an opponent’s barrage of one or more Monsters, Ambush could be a great card to have ready to activate. You could have a clear field of Monsters, during which your opponent would think they’ll have a clear shot at your LP. Then, when they Summon or Flip-Summon a Monster, you activated your Ambush and bring out a terrifying Monster of your own. Ambush’s Effect could prove to be useful in many a situation.

Ambush is a pretty effective card, and it’s very fun to use. Overall, I’d rate Ambush a good 7/10.

For the fourth (Malik) card of today’s article, let’s take a look at Rekunga.

Rekunga

Water/Plant - Level 4 - 1700/500

Effect: You may choose to remove 2 Water Main-Type Monsters in your Graveyard from the game. If you do so, you may Special Summon 1 [Rekunga Token] (Water/Plant - Level 2 - 700/700) to the Field in ATK mode.

*Rekunga was a Rare from the Japanese 306 set. It will be released in English in the set after Dark Crisis.*

Rekunga’s quite an interesting Monster indeed. With 1700 ATK, and the ability to be searched by the Witch, it makes it a bit more of a powerful card. Its Effect is not something that would prove to be useful in many situations in anything other than Water-based Decks, but it could end up being pretty Effective once in a while.

Its Effect could set you up for some Tribute-bait for your High Level Monsters, or just provide more of an agonizing wall for your opponent to have to get by. Sometimes it’ll end up benefiting you, and other times its Effect may not help you at all.

The Tokens aren’t too powerful, but they shouldn’t be expected to be, really. 700/700 for a Token isn’t all too bad, and it could provide you with a nice DEF if you have all the Water-Type Monsters to use them with.

Rekunga’s also a Plant-Type; A type that really doesn‘t get too much attention. So in a way, Rekunga could have brought some benefits to any Plant-users out there.

Rekunga can be a pretty nice Monster, but it’s not anything too good. I’d give it an overall rating of 6.3/10.

For the fifth (Malik) card of this article, we’ll be taking a look at Guranadora.

Guranadora
Water/Reptile -Level 4 - 1900/700
Effect: When this Monster is Summoned, Reverse (Flip)-Summoned, or Special Summoned, you gain 1000 LP. If this Monster is Destroyed from the Field and sent to the Graveyard, you lose 2000 LP.

Guranadora.. Yet another 1900 Attacker, only this one has a very intriguing Effect. It was a Common from the Japanese 306 set, so expect it in English along with Rekunga in the set after Dark Crisis.

The first thing you notice about Guranadora is it possibly being better than any other Level 4 1900 Attacker due to the 1000 LP gain that it gives you. Well, then you see the rest of its Effects and notice the what-could-be pretty big drawback of losing 2000 LP when it’s Destroyed. Well, key word there is “Destroyed.” Guranadora can be a great Monster for Tribute-bait. Being a 1900 Attacker out onto the Field, gain 1000 LP, then later Sacrifice it for a high-Level Monster. “Sacrificing” (“Tributing”) is not considered “Destroying,” therefore you would have gotten the 1000 LP boost from Guranadora, but not lost the extra 2000, as it wasn’t actually “Destroyed.”

That’s the thing you need to watch out for, though, when using Guranadora. Opponent’s Monster removal such as Thunderbolt, T-I Virus, E-Force, etc. Cards like Black Core or the Dimensional Warriors removing Guranadora wouldn’t cause you to lose the 2000 LP, either, as Guranadora never actually hit the Graveyard.

Guranadora can be great to use early-on in a Duel, and even then, the 2000 loss, if it were to happen, wouldn’t hurt you too much, really, after gaining 1000 LP. If in late-game, though, you’ll certainly want to try to have some protection for your Guranadora if you choose to use it.

Guranadora can be a very Effective and fun-to-play Monster Card. Overall, I’d give it a rating of 7.3/10.

And for the 6th and final (Malik) card of today’s article, let’s take a look at Iron Demon - Viser Death.

Iron Demon - Viser Death
Dark/Demon - Level 4 - 500/1200
Effect: When this Monster is Normal Summoned, choose one of your opponent’s Monsters. During your third Standby Phase after activating this Effect, the chosen Monster is Destroyed. Until this card’s Effect ends, this Monster can not be Destroyed in Battle. Damage is done as normal.

*This Monster Card was released as a Book Promo Card, then released with new art in the Japanese DM7 game. No telling when its English release may be.*

Iron Demon - Viser Death is a pretty interesting Monster that can be greatly used for stalling, and for getting rid of an opponent’s Monster, if no Monster removal gets in your way, that is, or as long as your opponent doesn‘t Tribute the chosen Monster. (As if they were to do that, Iron Demon’s Effect would then render useless.)

Its Effect is pretty simple to understand. You Normal Summon it, then choose an opponent’s Monster, obviously being whichever one you‘d most want to get out of your way. 3 of your own Standby Phases later, that chosen Monster will be Destroyed. No, Iron Demon will not be Destroyed with it, and yes, Iron Demon stays on your side of the Field while its Effect is active. It does not matter what position Iron Demon is in, it just must be face-up on the Field.

The second part of its Effect is also pretty easy to understand. It’s sort of like Spirit Reaper. While Iron Demon’s Effect is active, counting down the Standby Phases, it can not be Destroyed in Battle, although any battle damage would still go through.

Stats of 500/1200 aren’t exactly all that, but that gives it the ability to be searched out by Witch or Critter, giving it a bit more speed in any Deck it‘s in.

It can be good in any Dark or Demon Decks that would want to try it out for fun, but especially in Malik Character decks, as it’s somewhat of a key card in a Malik Deck.

Iron Demon can work well in combination with something like Swords of Revealing Light + Sacrifice-Sealing Mask, as well. Opponent can’t attack, and can’t Tribute the chosen Monster. Even the Mask alone could work well with the Iron Demon. Fun card to use.

Overall, I’d rate Iron Demon - Viser Death a 6.2/10. Yet another not bad yet not too good Monster Card.

Now, here’s an example of a Malik Character Deck. This is actually a version of my own personal (Competitive) Malik Deck that I frequently use myself.

If you’d like to see an example of a full-on Malik Character Deck (Non-Competitive), you can check out Edo’s Yu-Gi-Oh Page, and take a look at his Malik Ishtahl Deck at the following link.

Here’s a picture of the 6 cards of today’s article. Just so the picture wouldn’t be too big, I just scanned my cards and edited it so only the card pictures are shown, in order (Left to right).

And that’ll do it for my 20th Article here at Pojo’s. You can e-mail me with any questions and/or comments at my new e-mail address: dm7fgd32@hotmail.com

Until Next Time..
