Pojo's Yu-Gi-Oh Card of the Day

Enraged Battle Ox
Rare

Beast-Warrior / Effect Monster
As long as this card remains face-up on your side of the field, when Beast, Beast-Warrior and Winged Beast-Type monsters on your side of the field attack with an ATK that is higher than the DEF of your opponent's Defense Position monster, inflict the difference as Battle Damage to your opponent's Life Points.

Type - Earth / 4 / 1700 / 1000
Card Number
- IOC-070

Ratings are based on a 1 to 5 scale 1 being
the worst.  3 ... average.  5 is the highest rating

Date Reviewed - 5.25.04

dawnyoshi Enraged Battle Ox is a great trample effect/Mad Sword Beast effect monster. 1700 ATK isn't bad, as it overpowers Tribe-Infecting Virus and Breaker, and this beast gives your Manticore of Darkness and Berserk Gorilla (possibly Sacred Crane) the Mad Sword Beast effect. Not bad at all.

Constructed: 4/5

Limited: 3/5

Useful tool in limited, though it will be hard to draft this along with some strong beasts.
ExMinion OfDarkness Tuesday:
Enraged Battle Ox

This thing is like Spear Dragon on crack.

1700/1000...Witchable, stronger than the Mad Sword Beast others wouldn't run because it's too weak, and it doesn't shift. But -- what's this? -- it gives trample to THREE TYPES! On its own, this card's pretty good...but when you consider this thing gives Berserk Gorill and tomorrow's CotD trample (if you're following the theme you probably know what it is), that's pretty good.

I've been seeing a small surge of Beastdown decks (This, Berserk Gorilla, tomorrow's CotD, Manticore of Darkness...with Manticores, it has the swarming ability that is usually associated with Warriors, the Trampling usually given credit to Spear Dragon for, and is still able to manage its resources effectively.) You might seriously want to look around some sigs on the message boards and the deck forum for one of these to copy...or at the VERY LEAST, familiarize yourself with this thing. You may be going up against it at a tournament soon.

3/5
4.5/5 in Beast

Stats: Enraged battle Ox is a Level 4 with no Special Summoning restrictions or requirements, so it can be dropped into play with ease.  An Earth monster, it has some good Beatdown support, like yesterdays card.  Beast-Warriors of note include Manticore of Darkness and Mystical Knight of Jackal, so this type has some solid representatives.

Enraged battle Ox has a respectable ATK of 1700.  On its own, this would not cut it, but as we will see, this creature has a beneficial effect.  The Def of 1000 is fine, though again, I would prefer 1500, since it would be better but still a legal target for Witch of the Black Forest to search out.

Effect(s): This cards grants Trample to all Beast, Beast Warrior, and Winged Beast type monsters.  This is fantastic.  Even if it was just applied to itself, it would be a candidate for best Trampler (most others have draw backs, lower stats, or require tribute).  Applying to others, even of limited Types, is wonderful.

Uses/Combinations: If you use Beast, Beast Warriors, or Winged Beast, you should almost certainly run this, unless they never attack.  Even if it is in a Gravity Bind deck and Enraged Battle Ox itself can’t attack.  It’s quite simple.  Less obvious is that it’s one of the best Tramplers anyway, so if you lack it in a deck, you should consider running this unless the deck matches up better with say Airknight or Spear Dragon.

Ratings

Casual: 4.75/5-And I almost gave it a five, since any better, and I fear it would be broken.  This card is one of the two that have made various Beast-types into a formidable deck.  I think only Manticore of Darkness has done more to help.

Tournament: 4.25/5-Same as above, but competition from Control and Chaos decks takes it down a peg.

Limited: 5/5-Top pick.  There are a lot of the assorted Beast-Type monsters in this set, and this gives them Trample, so an opponent that gets down will probably fail to get back up-can’t hid behind setting chump blockers.  Even if you have no other Beast-types, take it.

Summary

Almost too good.  Trample is something never to underestimate.  That Fiber Jar that would have saved your opponent, maybe given them the win?  Doesn’t matter-you just took out the rest of their LP anyway.

Tranorix Tuesday: Enraged Battle Ox

This is what some consider to be the best trampler (monster that does LP damage even when attacking DEF monsters) in the game, mainly because 1) he has relatively solid ATK, 2) he's Level 4, and 3) he can give trample to more of your monsters, creating a very deadly attack force.

1700 isn't wonderful, but it is enough. When attacking DEF monsters, he'll more often than not be doing a nice of damage (Cyber Jar = 800; Sangan = 1100; Sinister Serpent = 1450; Spear Dragon = 1700). Get him on the field with Berserk Gorilla and he gives the monkey trample as well. Get him with Mystical Knight of Jackal and your opponent is in for a LOT of trouble...

There isn't too much more to say about Enraged Battle Ox; just know that he works relatively well in most offensive decks, and he's obviously a must for Beast decks.

Typical tournament deck: 3/5
Beast deck: 4/5
OVERALL RATING: 3.5/5
