Fun Format: 2002 Old School Deck - Baneful
May 2014

I've created my own fun format for more old school oriented players.  The core game rules and mechanics are the same, but there is a restriction on the cards you can use.

1. Only cards from 2002 are allowed: SDY, SDK, LOB, MRD, MRL/SRL, and PSV.

2. The current Banned/Restriction List applies – not the ones from 2002.

2002 Old School Deck

Monsters - 18

1 Summoned Skull

1 Jinzo

3 La Jinn, tMGotL

3 7 Colored Fish

3 Wall of Illusion

3 Man-Eater Bug

1 Magician of Faith

1 Mask of Darkness

1 White Magical Hat

1 Masked Sorcerer

Notes: Ample amount of quality monsters from that era.  Only monster from PSV is Jinzo, yet it is the strongest monster in the deck.  I could have used Harpie's Brother as an 1800 beater, but I'm nostalgic toward Fish and La Jinn.  All in all, very good control options been Wall of Illusion for defense/stall, Faith/Mask for retrieval, and Hat/Sorcerer for hand control.

Spell - 12

3 Mystical Space Typhoon

3 Fissure

1 Dark Hole

2 Nobleman of Crossout

1 Swords of Revealing Light

1 Axe of Despair

1 Rush Recklessly

Notes: Most of the strong spell cards of this era (bar Dark Hole) were banned, which requires us to be a bit more creative, though it is slightly redeemed with MST at 3.  One thing I had to think about with my Spell line-up is how to defeat Jinzo, so Axe, Rush Recklessly and a playset of Fissures come in handy.

Traps - 10

3 Trap Hole

2 Mirror Force

3 Call of the Haunted

1 Seven Tools of the Bandit

1 Mirror Wall

Notes: With Mirror Force laxed at 2 and Call of the Haunted boosted to 3, the trap line-up is much stronger than it was in 2002.  I planned on using Waboku and Michizscure as well, but lack of room.  With a total lack of inherent Special Summoning in 2002, Call of the Haunted is a major player.

For Purists

I would consider using the 2002 list for an old school format a bit hectic, but for those who want to abide by the 2002 ban list, here are the revisions I would make.

Banned cards I would have added (14 total): Monster Reborn, Pot of Greed, Raigeki, Heavy Storm, Witch of the Black Forest, Change of Heart, Giant Trunade, Confiscation, The Forceful Sentry, Snatch Steal, Delinquent Duo, Painful Choice, Imperial Order, and Time Seal

Cards to take out: 1 Mirror Force, 2 Mystical Space Typhoon, and 2 Call of the Haunted (5 total).  Mirror Wall, Seven Tools, 2 Fissure, 1 Wall of Illusion, 1 Man-Eater Bug, 1 Rush Recklessly, Axe of Despair, and White Magical Hat/Magic Sorcerer (9 total).
