Trading Card Game Tips from fans

March 2008

QUICK THOUGHTS ON THE BAN-LIST

Hey guys, Delinquent Duo is back again for another tip for your enjoyment.  This one will be quick as I don’t have much time to write it.  Today I’m just going to briefly overview the new ban-list.  Seeing as how others have gone pretty in depth on the tips page, I figured I would just throw some opinions out there.

TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE
The title of this section pretty much sums up my overall thoughts on this ban-list.  When you look at the coverage of the Shonen Jump in Houston, the top decks that made it into the top 16 won’t be affected by the ban-list at all.  In fact, most of them will be helped with the return of Monster Reborn.  The makers of the ban-list really failed to effectively predict which cards need to become controlled when Phantom Darkness came out.  Raiza being limited to one was a great move, but that’s about the only positive of the new ban-list.  I don’t know how to classify the return of Monster Reborn.  On one hand, now both players have access to each other’s graveyards.  Yesterday, while play testing a deck with my friend, I was able to use his Chiron the Mage against him and really turn the tables.  Destiny Hero Disk Commander can suddenly be used by both players, a big change in the next format.  The downside is that its free recursion without the downside of being attached to anything.  Being a spell card, you never really know when Monster Reborn is coming so it’s tough to prepare for it.  All in all, the ban-list won’t amount to anything with this coming format because the following cards weren’t touched.

THE BAN-LIST IS FOR SQUARES…LIKE PANTS

Almost every deck in the top 16 at SJ Houston had at least 2 Dark Armed Dragons in it.  This card desperately needed to be reduced to one or two and it wasn’t, thus DAD ran absolutely rampant.  Using this card in combination with Return from the Different Dimension, Dark Magician of Chaos, and Allure of Darkness is just insane.  It’s no wonder that this deck dominated the top 16.  Raiza and Phoenix Wing Wind Blast do nothing to this card because as long as you have 3 Darks in your graveyard, DAD will be back.  Allowing you to use his effect more than once per turn is insane advantage, especially late game when you probably have a lot of Darks in your graveyard.
Allure of Darkness is another card that I can’t believe didn’t see some sort of restriction upon its release.  Every single Dark deck was running 3 and combining these with Destiny Draws and Dark decks just have more draw than they should be allowed.  When you have so many draw cards, the odds of a bad hand are pretty low.  You can dump high tributes into the graveyard or remove them, then bring them back for even more advantage.
Cyber Valley was another card that should’ve been limited because of the first-turn kill deck with Magical Explosion.  No first-turn decks should ever exist in the game of Yu-Gi-Oh! and Cyber Valley is a big reason for it.  Dark decks are much more stable than Magical Explosion FTK decks so I don’t see this deck winning a Shonen Jump, but still you want any possibility of a FTK deck to be zero.
I said in my last article that Crush Card Virus needed to be banned and in an era ruled by Dark monsters, it was left alone.  All you have to do is read the coverage on the SJ in Houston and every time a player activated Crush Card Virus, that person won.  The card is just too easy to get off and does so much devastation to your opponent.  In one of the feature matches I read, the player who had Crush Card Virus played against him lost four cards and total control of the match!  This card will support the main topic for my next article to come in the near future.

Well that’s all I have for now.  I could’ve sworn there was something else that I wanted to write about, but I just can’t remember what it was.  If anyone would like to trade me some Dark Bribes, leave me some comments or questions, deck fixes, you can e-mail me at Tinytim126@yahoo.com.  Remember: 1.) don’t ever give up and 2.) don’t ever cheat.
