July 2007
Crystal Beasts - Making Them Competitive by Derek Semeraro

Crystal Beasts are currently not competitive, according to many people. But, I believe they do have a place in the current state of Yu-Gi-Oh. When Crystal Beasts are destroyed, it's not a -1, so Sakuretsu Armor and Mirror Force do little damage to the deck. After the crystallization of several monsters, you must decide of what to do with them. No deck type is as supported as Crystal Beasts, in my opinion.

Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

How do I build up speed for the crystallization?
Crystal Beast Sapphire Pegasus is a staple and speeds the deck immensely. Crystal Beacon speeds the deck immensely, also. Especially, when the two cards are used together. Crystal Blessing can be used late game to build up the crystallization you had lost.

What do I do with the crystallization?
Use a Rare Value or two. Use two or three Crystal Abundance. Use a few Ancient Cities to control the duel.

How do you use Ancient City?
Ancient City is hard to destroy, because of it's effect. It's not the main idea of the deck either. I wouldn't recommend using three of them for speed or Terraformings. You will draw them at the right time and they will help you out if you use two.

Crystal Abundance?
That's most important card of the deck. Use two or three of them. Build up speed and burst it on the opponent. Give them no mercy!

Rank the Crystal Beasts?

Top
---------------------------------
Pegasus - So much speed.
Mammoth - Good beatstick. Helpful sometimes.
Tiger - Good beatstick.
Carbuncle - Good swarmer, but weak.
Tortoise - Okay defense.
Eagle - Situational effect ; weak.
Amthyest Cat - Don't bother
----------------------------------
Bottom

How does the Cat Engine work?
You use Rescue Cat to search out 2 Amthyest Cat. The cats get destroyed to your advantage. The problem with that is that the Amthyest Cats are not so good cards and if you draw them before Rescue Cat, it ruins the combo. It's a 50/50 risky combo and it's not worth it.

Rank the support?

Top
---------------------------------
Crystal Abundance - This is Chaos reincarnated. This wins games!
Ancient City - Helps you out in many situations. Hard to get rid of!
Rare Value - Pot of Greed for Crystal Beasts.
Crystal Beacon - Can add a lot of speed.
Crystal Blessing - Recover your losses.
Crystal Raigeki - Just use Sakuretsu Armor. Don't waste your time, here.
Crystal Promise - A good card at certain times.
Gem Flash Energy - Direct Damage, not bad. But takes up room.
Seismic Crasher/Dweller of the Deep - Dont use them. Period.
----------------------------------
Bottom

What are the weaknesses of Crystal Beasts?
Being out-swarmed monster-wise and having the magic and trap zones clogged. I would suggest not to use too many continuous magic and trap cards. Cards to protect life points from direct attacks and cards that clear the opponent's monster zones are recommended.

What do you think of the new Crystal Beast in TAEV?
It has 4000 ATK. Attack points don't matter that much in the current metagame. It requires 7 Crystal Beasts to Special Summon from field and graveyard. A bit hard to summon, especially early game. It has an effect to boost it's ATK, but ATK doesn't matter that much. It has another effect to return all cards back to the deck, but thats no good either. And you can't activate an effect the turn you summon this. This is a mediocre card and I warn you to use this with caution.

How are they against Gadgets?
Magical. I love when Green Gadget runs into Mammoth or Turtle. I love when their monster destruction doesn't even faze me. But, watch out for their face downs, though.

How are they against Monarchs?
Fine. Just pray that they don't have Mobius. Side 3 Pulling the Rugs if you must.

Build the deck?

Lustrous Lamentations (40)

Monster (18)
2 Cyber Dragon
3 Sapphire Pegasus
3 Topaz Tiger
3 Amber Mammoth
2 Emerald Tortoise
1 Ruby Carbuncle
1 Morphing Jar
1 Spirit Reaper
1 Sangan
1 D.D. Warrior Lady

Magic (16)
2 Ancient City
3 Crystal Abundance
2 Rare Value
2 Smashing Ground
1 Crystal Blessing
1 Crystal Beacon
1 Snatch Steal
1 Mystical Space Typhoon
1 Scapegoat
1 Nobleman of Crossout
1 Lightning Vortex

Trap (6)
1 Ring of Destruction
1 Torrential Tribute
1 Call of the Haunted
3 Waboku

Side (15)
3 Des Wombat
3 Pulling the Rug
3 Dust Tornado
3 Cursed Seal of the Forbidden Spell
2 Mobius the Frost Monarch
1 Emergency Provisions

Waboku protects your life points and helps a lot. The Crystal Beast cards, you should know how they work. Lightning Vortex is to clear swarming. Morphing Jar is to add speed and draw power. And the rest explains itself.

The side deck is great. Des Wombat is to negate Direct Damage. Pulling the Rug is to stop Manju, Gadgets, and Monarchs. Dust Tornadoes and Mobiuses can add the magic and trap destruction this deck lacks. Cursed Seal of the Forbidden Spell is good against Demise Decks, Field Spell Decks, Final Countdown, ect. Emergency Provisions turns the Crystal Beasts into healing machines.

This shouldn't do too bad in a tournament.
