Deck Analysis 5:
Looking at the Toon Deck

By ~ShineSoldier~

Hey, everyone.
I’m back with a new Deck Analysis Article.
I’m glad that so many people like these articles, since I got a lot of positive feedback.
It really motivates me. Thank you all for that.

Today’s deck is the Toon Deck.
A Deck that has been introduced in Spell/Magic Ruler and in the Pegasus Starter Deck. However, it almost vanished out of all player’s minds immediately. They were considered as bad cards that needed too much support cards to work well.
This is half true. They do need a lot of support, but they defenitely don’t need TOO much support. A deck never needs to much support to work. It depends most of all on the kind of support you’re giving it and how many cards you want to run. Toon Decks can afford to run more than 40 cards, since they have some speed cards.

Let’s start with the Toon Cards.

Blue-Eyes Toon Dragon
Light / Dragon
Toon
8*

“This card cannot be summoned unless "Toon World" is on the field. This card cannot attack in the same turn that it is summoned. Pay 500 Life Points each time this monster attacks. When "Toon World" is destroyed, this card is also destroyed. If your opponent doesn't control a Toon monster on the field, this card may inflict Direct Damage to your opponent's Life Points. If a Toon monster is on your opponent's side of the field, your attacks must target the Toon monster.”

ATK 3000 / DEF 2500

Manga Ryu-Ran
Fire / Dragon
Toon
7*

“This card cannot be summoned unless "Toon World" is on the field. This card cannot attack in the same turn that it is summoned. Pay 500 life points each time this monster attacks. When "Toon World" is destroyed, this card is destroyed. If your opponent doesn't control a Toon monster on the field, this card may inflict Direct Damage to your opponent's Life Points. If a Toon Monster is on your opponent's side of the field, your attacks must target the Toon Monster.”

ATK 2200 / DEF 2600

Toon Summoned Skull
Dark / Fiend
Toon

“This card cannot be summoned unless "Toon World" is on the field. This card cannot attack in the same turn that it is summoned. Pay 500 Life Points each time this monster attacks. When "Toon World" is destroyed, this card is also destroyed. If your opponent doesn't control a Toon monster on the field, this card may inflict Direct Damage to your opponent's Life Points. If a Toon monster is on your opponent's side of the field, your attacks must target the Toon monster.”

ATK 2500 / DEF 1200

Toon Mermaid
Water / Aqua
Toon

If a Toon monster is on your opponent's side of the field, your attacks must target the Toon monster.”

ATK 1400 / DEF 1500

Toon Gemini Elf
Earth / Spellcaster
Toon
4*

“This card cannot attack during the turn that it is Normal Summoned, Flip Summoned, or Special Summoned. When "Toon World" on the field is destroyed, this card is also destroyed. If "Toon World" is on your side of the field and your opponent does not control a Toon Monster, this card can attack your opponent's Life Points directly. When this card inflicts Battle Damage to your opponent's Life Points, your opponent discards 1 card randomly from his/her hand.”

ATK 1900 / DEF 900

Toon Goblin Attack Force
Earth / Warrior
Toon

If this card attacks, it is changed to Defense Position at the end of the Battle Phase, and you cannot change this Battle Position until the end of your next turn.”

ATK 2300 / DEF 0

Toon Masked Sorcerer
Dark / Spellcaster
Toon

If this card inflicts battle damage to your opponent’s Life Points, draw one card from your deck.”

ATK 900 / DEF 1400

Toon Cannon Soldier
Dark / Machine
Toon

Offer one monster on your side of the field as a tribute to inflict 500 points of direct damage to your opponent’s Life Points.”

ATK 1400 / DEF 1300

Toon World
Spell / Continous

“You must pay 1000 Life Points to activate this card.”

Toon Table of Contents
Spell / Normal

“Search your deck for a card that includes ‘Toon’ in its name or is named Mange Ryu-Ran and add that card to your hand.”

Toon Defense
Trap / Continous

“Whenever a Toon Monster whose total Level Stars equal 4 or less is attacked, that Toon's controller may choose to receive the attack directly instead.”

Wow!
That’s a very, very long list.
Enough support if you ask me.
First, let’s divide them in to groups: Playable and Not-Playable

Playable
Blue-Eyes Toon Dragon: This card isn’t that good, but it still could see play in a Toon Deck.
Toon Summoned Skull: Nice addition for Toon Decks
Toon Mermaid: Provides field presense (can be Special Summoned) and tribute bait.
Toon Gemini Elf: A beaststick for Toons, exactly what they need.
Toon Goblin Attack Force: Another nice beaststick card
Toon Masked Sorcerer: Provides speed, which a Toon Deck needs very badly
Toon World: DUH!
Toon Table of Contents: Searches every single Toon Card!
Toon Defense: Provides a little defense

Not-Playable
Manga Ryu-Ran: Two tributes for 2200 attack? No way.
Toon Cannon Soldier: Toons need field presence. This card ruins it.

Okay, so almost all cards that I mentioned above are worth playing.
Now, let’s see what a Toon Deck is good at.
Mmmh, they do have 1 special ability: All monsters can attack directly.
That’s pretty good, so let’s see if we can get the best out of it.

If all of your monsters can attack directly, it’s a smart thing to include cards of which their effects will be triggered when you inflict battle damage.

Robbin Goblin
Trap / Continous

“Whenever one of your monsters inflicts damage to your opponent’s Life Points, discard one card from your opponent’s hand at random.”

Robbin Zombie
Trap / Continous

“Whenever one of your monsters inflicts damage to your opponent’s Life Points, send the top card of your opponent’s deck to the Graveyard.”

Both work well in a Toon Deck. However, my own favorite is Robbin Goblin.
Toon Decks suffer from disadvantages quite often, and this card can give you some advantage. I don’t know yet if one of these cards will be in the final deck, because I may need to exclude them to add extra protection.

The worst thing that could happen to a Toon Deck, is that Toon World would be destroyed while you have a lot of Toon Monsters on the field. That’s why a Toon Deck needs a lot of S/T protection. Magic Drain and Curse of Royal could be added for this.

Magic Drain
Trap / Counter

“You can activate this card when your opponent activates a Spell Card. If your opponent cannot immediately discard a Spell Card from his/her hand, negate the activation of the Spell Card and destroy it.”

Curse of Royal
Trap / Counter

“Negate the activation of a card that includes the effect of destroying 1 Spell or Trap card and destroy it.”

Even though these cards provide nice protection, they will strenthen one of the other weaknesses of the Toon Decks: Bad topdecks.
Getting rid of this weakness is a bit hard.
Adding 3 Spirit Reapers might cure this problem a bit, since they can stall your opponent for a while so that you can draw more cards.

Spirit Reaper
Dark / Zombie
Effect
3*

“This monster is not destroyed as a result of battle at any time, although damage calculation is applied normally. When this card is specifically designated as a target of the effect of a Magic, Trap, or Effect Monster Card, this card is immediately destroyed. When this card attacks your opponent's Life Points directly, 1 card is randomly selected from your opponent's hand and discarded to the Graveyard.”

ATK 300 / DEF 200

As you can see, it cannot be destroyed as a result of battle. That means it can stall for quite a while and with protection like Magic Drain, you can even let is stall for a longer time. An excellent card in this deck.

Now, let’s get to the protection step.
We’ve already added Magic Drain/Curse of Royal to protect Toon World. Now we’ll need something to protect your Toons themselves. When you use Magic Drain instead of Curse of Royal, you already have some form of monster protection. To protect them from battle, there is a combination of two cards.

Astral Barrier
Trap / Continous

“If your opponent's monster attacks a monster on your side of the field, you can make the attack a direct attack to your Life Points.”

Spirit Barrier
Trap / Continous

“As long as a monster(s) remain(s) on your side of the field battle damage to the controller of this card becomes 0.”

Astral Barrier makes all your opponent’s attacks direct attacks and Spirit Barrier makes all direct attacks nothing. That sounds pretty nice. Some people prefer to use Toon Defense instead of Astral Barrier.
That’s a choice you’ve got to make. Remember that Toon Defense only works on your Level 4 Toon Monsters. However, in a typical Toon Deck, I think Toon Defense is a better choice. IF you’re using Astral Barrier, then you could include a Des Lacooda too, since you can make the attacks that target him useless too.

Des Lacooda
Earth / Zombie
Effect
3*

“You can flip this card into face-down Defense Position once per turn during your Main Phase. When this card is Flip Summoned, you draw 1 card from your Deck.”

ATK 500 / DEF 600

Because the combination mentioned above makes all opposing attacks useless, you might be able to gain huge advantages through this card.

The last part of this deck’s construction lies in the Life Points Gain.
Attacking with Toon Summoned Skull and playing Toon World will both cost Life Points with this deck, so we’ll need to recover it a bit.
Let’s use Draining Shield for this. It forms some protection too.

Draining Shield
Trap / Normal

“Negate the attack of 1 of your opponent's monsters and increase your Life Points by an amount equal to the attacking monster's ATK.”

A very nice addition in a Toon Deck.

Here’s what we’ve got until now.

Monsters: 15x
Toon Summoned Skull
Toon Goblin Attack Force
Toon Goblin Attack Force
Toon Goblin Attack Force
Toon Gemini Elf
Toon Gemini Elf
Toon Gemini Elf
Toon Masked Sorcerer
Toon Masker Sorcerer
Magician of Faith
Breaker the Magical Warrior
Morphing Jar
Spirit Reaper
Spirit Reaper
Spirit Reaper

The big problem with constructing a Toon Deck is determing how many copies of which cards you should use. I decided to use no Blue-Eyes Toon Dragons and only one Toon Summoned Skull. Why? Because they require Toon World to be out to be summoned. The newer Toons (Toon GAF, Toon Gemini Elf, Toon Masked Sorcerer) can be Summoned even without Toon World out. Since we’re using not so much Toon Monsters from ‘Spell Ruler’, we will use a lot of Dark Beginning 2, since it won’t be a Toon Deck if we only used 2 Toons or something. I think adding 3 Toon Goblin Attack Force and 3 Toon Gemini Elf is a nice addition. Also, we can add 2 Toon Masked Sorcerer to give you some advantage. Another staple in Toon Decks is Magician of Faith, since it can bring back a lost Toon World or another Toon Table of Contents. Just amazing. Morphing Jar forms great advantages in this deck, so he will be in here too. Breaker is just stapled, so no question about him. With 3 Spirit Reapers, we have built the basic Toon Monster Setup. It contains 15 monsters, which isn’t very much. Let’s add three Nimble Momonga’s for Life Points Gain and Field Presence.

Nimble Momonga
Earth / Beast
Effect
2*

“When this card is sent to the Graveyard as a result of battle, increase your Life Points by 1000. You can also take cards of the same name from your Deck and Special Summon them to the field in face-down Defense Position. The Deck is then shuffled.”

ATK 1000 / DEF 100

Perfect in this deck. With three of them, you’ll be at 11000 Life Points in no time, which gives you enough extra Life Points to play all your three Toon Worlds...Just perfect.

Let’s take a look at the spells for now.

Spells: 6x
Toon World
Toon World
Toon World
Toon Table of Contents
Toon Table of Contents
Toon Table of Contents

Three Toon Worlds is absolutely neccesary in this deck. It’s the main card of the Toon Deck and you’ve gotta get it out as quick as possible. Toon Table of Contents is a true staple in this deck. Some even say it’s better than Toon World. He might be. He can search out ALL Toon Cards in your deck, including Toon World and itself. Just perfect in this deck.
With these 2 Spells, we’re at 6 Spells total. Now what can we add more?
First we’ll add two ‘Vengeful Bog Spirit’.
Since your Toons can’t attack in the turn their Summoned anyway, you won’t have a hard time dealing with this. Your opponent however, will have to adjust his whole playstyle.

Vengeful Bog Spirit
Spell / Continous

“All monsters on the field cannot attack in the same turn that they are summoned (includes Flip Summon and Special Summon).”

This sure is a nice addition to this deck.
Next, we’ll add some of the so-called staple cards:
- Scapegoat
- Mystical Space Typhoon
- Heavy Storm
- Smashing Ground
- Nobleman of Crossout
- Dark Hole

This brings us at a total of 14 Spell Cards.
I excluded Premature Burial on purpose, since he’s too slow in this deck. With Call of the Haunted, you can Special Summon a Toon monster in your opponent’s End Phase, so that you can attack with it on your own turn. Premature can’t do that. I also left out Snatch Steal, since you’ll need to get your opponent’s Life Points down to 0 as fast as possible. Snatch Steal only increases their Life Points.

Well, the Traps are up now.
Until now, we’ve got this:

Traps: 8x
Draining Shield
Draining Shield
Magic Drain
Magic Drain
Toon Defense
Toon Defense
Spirit Barrier
Spirit Barrier

With 8 Traps, we’re at 40 cards total, so we haven’t got a lot of space to add new cards. I think we’re going to add two at max.
Well, the two cards to add are pretty obvious cards:
- Torrential Tribute
- Call of the Haunted

This gives us 10 Traps and a total amount of 42 cards.
Still, I want to make some final adjustments.
These adjustment may not be liked by you, so if you don’t like them, just don’t use them.
I’m taking out the two Magic Drains for 2 Solemn Judgments.
I know this might be a bad thing, but with 2 Draining Shields and 3 Nimbles, your Life Points will be very high most of the time.
But again, if you don’t like this, just don’t do it.

It’s time to write down the final deck.
Here it is:

Monsters: 18x
Toon Summoned Skull
Toon Goblin Attack Force
Toon Goblin Attack Force

Total Cards: 42 cards.

Some final notes: I did my best to make some sort of a competive Toon Deck, but bear in mind that Toon Decks are most of all for those people who like to play for fun. Don’t expect to win Nationals with this deck, but feel free to use it at local tourneys. It would be real fun to win with a deck like this, since there is almost nobody that runs a Toon Deck nowadays.

I exluded Robbin Goblin / Zombie, since Toon Gemini Elf and Toon Masked Sorcerer will take care of the advantages now.

If you’ve got any comments, ideas or if you want to say something else, feel free to mail me at slam25@hetnet.nl

That’s it for this article.
Have fun with this deck!

‘Til next time.
